Fun trick that my grandpa taught me: Nail clippers are made of Tungsten, one of the hardest metals on the market, much harder than carbon steel. If you use the sharp side of the clippers to etch your cutline into the exhaust and simply hit it with a hammer, it will break into a very clean cut. I haven't used a saw in years, and my exhaust work takes half as long!
The problem with most of the "chain and wheel" cutters is that the wheels are often not yet through the pipe and the links or the wheel "axles' or the attachment points (fixed and slotted on the vise-grip-style cutter) often contact the pipe before the wheels have cut through. A simple solution would be to manufacture the wheels at a larger diameter. In this way, the chain-links and chain attachment areas are far away from the surface of the pipe. Also, the chain-style cutters often jam due to the fact that the handle will rock and cause the chain to pinch the pipe (as a result of the leverage exerted on the handle)--much in the same way that a chain-style oil filter remover tightens around the filter.
Yeah, I've been fighting this stupid tool all day. Not only do the axles get in the way, but the whole tool tends to fall apart. The links won't stay on the axles and all the wheels start leaning to the side and stop cutting. I should have just rented a sawzall.

I did not realize how much it wanted to role the whole pipe till i tried it in the field thankfully my friend had adjustable pliers we were abel to use to clampe the pipe down by twisting rope around the handels and we finished the job with next to 0 noise. Lesson from that is if you are gonna use roller pipe cutters you need a clamp.

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders I know this is 2yrs old but I definitely expected u to show the viewer some compassion, the poor guy just robbed for his cats, and had some expensive components hacked up! By someone using the exact tool u just showed everyone how to use! Bro as a utuber I feel like u should definitely not have responded with that generic default comment! u probably past it in tons of your responses. And I get that, but why would u even say anything? It makes it look like u could care less what he just said and just commented back not even acknowledging anything this poor prick said . I mean how hard would it have been to respond instead real quick, tell the guy "u feel his pain and that it definitely sucks having your pride and joy hacked up like that" and maybe give him some advice on what he can do to stop it from happening to him again.. u know that's how u keep ya subs cuz that Also would have been beneficial for your channel, people would think u were a decent person..

omg people are stupid great tool. One time i wanted to help a friend repair a fence he had neighbors who were assholes and were making noise complaints just to make his life difficult so i brought a pipe cutter with one blade and 2 rollers because it was super quiet .

Estimate, how long would it take to cut an exhaust pipe using this tool?
Takes about 3-5 minutes....that's if you have a lift and your working while standing....I used same tool and cut pipe in 5-7 minutes while laying on the ground😀👍
Thanks. I will be working from the ground on jack stands. I just wanted to make sure this wasn't going to be a tedious 15-20 min task. lol
+Michael Borders I tried it on my stainless steel exhaust tip, 10 minutes in and hardly made any progress
+BosnianBaller21 Are you using a used tool or brand new tool?
+Michael Borders I rented the exact same tail pipe cutter you have from Advanced Auto Parts. I'm sure it will cut through the copper part of my exhaust but it won't work on stainless steal.
Would be a lot easier with the pipe mounted so you can hold the tool with both hands
Thanks for watching & we agree. 😎👍
Handles bent before it even made a dent in the exhaust
What’s up James, thanks for watching. You must have a thick multi-layered exhaust pipe. Most would recommend sawzall.

I was gonna cut the exhaust pipe of my civic because I was pulling out the engine and someone Weld the exhaust manifold to the cathalitic converter flange.
I tried that tool and after 2 hours I decided to leave the exhaust manifold attached to the car.
Cut the rubber hangers and threw the manifold to the side so I can drop the engine.

That is a bitch and a half to use if you're doing 3-inch pipe or higherjust to let you know because I'm struggling with it right this momentall it wants to do is keep skipping over the line and cutting a new line it will not stay in position because I can't clamp it down the handles like someone else said are just too far apart. I'm trying to devise something right now like a c-clamp or something that will hold on to this son of a bitch

@@DIYwithMichaelBorders okay so actually the zip tie worked for a little bit but what I ended up doing was using a hose clamp after that that worked quite a bit longer but that still wasn't good enough I'm cutting 3-inch pipe and it's pretty thick so what I did of course I already had some heavy duty exhaust clamps because we're working on exhaust right take that clamp and put it around the handle nothing will make that slip loose.
