Quick Business Update: Part One

- Opening a kayak rental shop seems like an idea that is happening whether I like it or not. Don't get me wrong; I love the idea. But I have enjoyed a relatively easy life now for a couple of years. Well, easy compared to the rest of my life. Starting a business will likely bring lots of headaches and challenges and long hours. So, I'm trying to enjoy what time there is left before things really start getting under way.
The outpouring of support for this idea makes me believe this is going to be a great adventure and well worth the effort. Thanks so much to the people that have donated their time and money so far. And to companies like www.underwaterf... for the incredible distraction that lies right under my boat every night now ;^P The fish bump my boat constantly while I try to sleep. It's a glorious problem to have!

Marty, you should get a liquor license. That way your little business could turn not only into a kayak rental place, but a place for fisherman to hang out, discuss fishing, clean and cook their catch, etc. you could become not only a fishing shop, but also a fishing club. A place for fathers to take their sons, a place where young people who don't have parents that fish can find a mentor and learn how to fish. Marty, seriously, you could literally change how people fish and inspire a new generation to get out and fish, especially if in the far future you can expand. Zoffinger could become a nationwide chain of places for fisherman to come together. You're doing so awesome work, man
always funny when someone that is not starting their own new business is full of ideas how someone that is starting their own new business should do it.

He needs an old dog kennel to stake down That away he can keep them locked up tight. Kennels are cheap and pretty solid.

Marty, good to see the improvements. My ex BIL had one of those underwater lights. It turned his lake into an aquarium. We would sit out, kick back with some beer, talk and watch the fish show at night. Really nice thing.

Hey zoffinger it's great to see you get started on your kayak rental shop! :) I hope you get a bunch of kayaks and lots of visitors! I haven't fished before and somehow I came across your channel, and I'm definitely in love. Simple, pleasant life, and catching/eating only what you need, and fishing for fun and in a sustainable manner too. Your narrating voice is freaking awesome and the fact you're always so calm, and seeming to enjoy yourself is admirable and respectable. Florida is a long ways from where I am but I hope to one day drop by Florida and visit you and your shop, and maybe learn/go fishing with you.

Spray your tiki skirt with waterproof spray to prevent the fish guts from soaking in and destroying the fibers and making them smell. It will deteriorate faster if you don't. Also the kayak rack needs to have PVC or wood runners from front to back of kayaks so the grooves under the kayak can sit on the pvc pipes. This way the sun will not warp your kayaks where they sit on the small contact points of the wood you have them on. Good idea! Good luck on the biz! I'll try to visit sometime!

Wow it has been a while since I have been able to get on and check the feeds. Looks like you're getting things going. Those snook are amazing to watch. I had a pond in the back yard for a little while but now Texas is drying out so no more pond. Great work Marty keep it going.
It's lookin' like a great start! If you need an inexpensive building on-site quick; You may want to consider getting a storage shed brought out and installed. All you would need to do is make a gravel or concrete pad to sit it on and tie it down. They are robust and waterproof and you can even get one that has multiple floors and stairs. If you have a Home Depot close, they may have some you can look at to get an idea.

Been a while had to sub again. Looking good glad to see your still having fun and look at them fish. So a solar light ok that's cool. So you sink the line and the light what floats 3 ft under the water. Man that's cool to video and under the water filming that's so cool. Glad I see this vidoe in the feed of videos. I have lights to hang over board while I'm out. But don't live on the water yet to be able to hang a light year around. Well good vidoe thanks god bless

Marty, I'm not sure if you've covered this in one of your previous videos but before you get too far along into setting up your business, I'd make sure your property is zoned for what you are trying to do. Just by the looks of it it appears you are in a residential neighborhood meaning your property is zoned to be used for residential use only. As soon as you try to operate a business out of your location, one call by a disgruntled neighbor to the county zoning department would shut you down real quick. Again if you're already properly zoned that's awesome and I cant wait to see what you do with the property but if you haven't considered the zoning of your property I'd make sure to look into it before getting too far along.
RobM, agreed. That he has to mention "legal hoops to jump through" probably means the landlord doesn't care (for now) and the area is only zoned for residential. "Legal hoops" means getting it rezoned- would have better luck turning a house into a day care center- but a kayak rental...good luck!! Making construction noise, starting building, leaving muddy tracks in the street, already is not going to sit well with the neighbors who live there. Putting a parking lot next to peoples expensive homes, commercial signs, and having strangers in and out of the neighborhood....could not see the city/county approving that.

Yea, he'll have to go before the county board of commissioners to try to have it rezoned which most likely isn't going happen. Also, the meeting will be open to the general public and if any neighbors attend and voice their concerns it'll only hurt his cause.
I guess he might be in luck then!
