I love how Surannes eyes light up when she talks about her. You can tell she loves playing this character. Great series. Ann Lister was the ultimate girl power for that era.
@Legion I agree that "girl power" is a problematic expression, it undermines women and being assertive as a woman (nobody would say "boy power" lol so why is it a thing when talking about women) like you had me in the first part but then I read the second part and no. She wore a dress- a dress as masculine as it gets- but it was still a dress. Transvestite would be if she had a fully masculine style, e. g. pants instead of a skirt and maybe even short hair. I'm acutally not even sure if "transvestite" would be the correct term for that cause it's more broadly known for men who like to dress up as women so maybe "cross-dresser" would be more appropriate. Anne Lister didn't cross-dress either though (skirt, long hair done up, you name it) and I honestly have no idea why you brought up her sexual orientation there

dippster357 I understand your issue with the classism, but Anne was being realistic when it came to economical divide in those times. It was harder for women to have money unless it was through inheritance or marriage. Marrying in your class was so important then because you had to rely on you husbands income. If her sister were to marry someone below her class her lifestyle would significantly change and she’d have a harder life. If someone was to marry up in their class they may not the right etiquette, may be illiterate and will leave they’re poor family behind.

The walking style really got me. I walk like that naturally because of ten years of working with Thoroughbred horses (who walk quite fast). I've never seen another woman walk the same way as me, even the women I work with will walk normally when they're not leading a horse. But for some reason I just powerwalk everywhere, all the time, and it's really interesting seeing it put in a different context where I can watch another woman do it and see just how authoritative and businesslike I must look myself haha. It really does make Anne stand out in the series and lends a no-nonsense attitude to her character. It also offsets the more emotional scenes, even when she's not technically going anywhere, because without that purposeful stride she seems almost lost and adrift.
I walk like that due to having short legs and having to stride to keep up with my longer legged friends, but I also do it when I’m in a hurry and need to get somewhere quickly. I’ve had people commenting saying slow down why are you walking so fast?? And I’m like am I?? Hadn’t noticed
I grew up in Georgia (USA); you could say I am a Southern Lady. When I visit New York City I am a fish out of water on the sidewalk. Most women walk like Anne Lister! It's not just a matter of walking fast. I felt like I was in a herd of charging bulls attempting to go head-to-head with an enemy. Anne doesn't always appear unpleasant. More like she is just ready to meet the next "thing" head-on, whatever it is! I love the energy of this show.

Además de un gran trabajo de esta serie desde el primer momento que empecé a ver los trailers me cautivo y yo sin tener conocimiento de que se trataría la serie. FELICITACIÓNES A TODOS.
So interesting to see the process of creating the fashions and the hair/makeup for these characters to bring them to life from the outside, and how that affects the internal work of the actors.
.. oh wait. NOW I work it out, after all these comments. I am watching this on my computer and I've vaguely noticed occasionally that one of the speakers isn't as strong as the other, and COMPLETELY COINCIDENTALLY I thought that they did some bad editing where we saw some bits of interviews with actors that didn't have audio, but... right. Apparently that speaker has died. Apparently I'm only getting sound from that side of the desk so if the sound isn't mixed... um. okay. Everybody's comments about mixing make much more sense now.

The costuming in this show amazes me. The combination of male and female fashions is brilliant. I don't know how faithful this is to the real Anne Lister. I don't think her portrait is full length, so anything below the frame is a mystery. If she did indeed wear skirts she was certainly forward thinking in their design. It's like a masculine women's cycling outfit of the late Victorian era with a touch of Regency. I want it!
The so-called photo of Anne Lister in the Sunday Times magazine last Sunday just isn't. Lister died in 1840 in Russia, the year the earliest recorded portrait was taken. The photo of a standing lady in the magazine is from around 1855. Sadly, there are no photos of Lister.

The lighting, costume and set design of this show make the show look EXACTLY like those old paintings. How did they not get an award for such an accurate set design!
I love the music and the way they show her dressing little pieces its so cool
Alejandra Alvide De Ramirez
i love the way Sophie Rundle managed to look star-struck when Anne first introduces herself
Gentleman jack back then tomboy now.
I like this kind of parallelism of definitions
I can't believe I only discovered this series this year. And I can't believe there are only two seasons. That's a shame.
Ann's is an amazing 17-18th century figure and im over the moon HBO is bringing her to life.GOOD YOU HBO!!!!!!
It literally says 19th century in the title.....
So interesting to see the process of creating the fashions and the hair/makeup for these characters to bring them to life from the outside, and how that affects the internal work of the actors.
There is something almost....Doctor-like about that look....
Maybe she was the Doctor 🤔
Or Missy.
@@terry9238 very Missy
Suranne did play the TARDIS in human form…
@@Keykey74 One of my favorite episodes ever, which says something about Suranne considering I hated #11 and Amy Pond
I only had my right earbud in and was wondering where the voices were
I listened to this with only the right in ear headphone thing in my ear at first and I waited a long time for their voices to start and I really got confused 😂
Can't wait for series 3.....!!!!!!
My absolute favorite work EVER! Such wonderful writing and acting.
Great Show indeed, The Music is Fantastic, absolutely love it.
Me with this show: came for the gorgeous, intricate costume design…stayed for the wonderful acting, the killer story, and the beautiful romance 😭
Next on my list to watch!
Love a great period piece.
My favorite thing about the BBC is Period Dramas. I love period Dramas! can't wait for season 2!
"How do you dress a 19th Century lesbian?" - Flannel everything
I got hooked on this show after Game of Thrones ended. Awesome show. Fan of Victorian style shows.
Me too. History is just so cool
not to pedantic but this is more georgian than victorian- victorian era would have started in 1837, three years after Anne married Ann. :)
@@blackthornss wow you are correct. I just learned something new. Of course it makes sense that the Victorian era would be during the reign of queen Victoria. Thanks you for telling us that. Otherwise it probably wouldn't have dawned on me, and I live to learn new things
My right ear is dead.
And, yes, i agreed with you all - Peter Davison, Gemma Whelan, Timothy West
ok, UPD
The second part of vid, i tried to guess what ear or both is blessed now.
I wish the intro song was available on Spotify
The costuming in this show amazes me. The combination of male and female fashions is brilliant. I don't know how faithful this is to the real Anne Lister. I don't think her portrait is full length, so anything below the frame is a mystery. If she did indeed wear skirts she was certainly forward thinking in their design. It's like a masculine women's cycling outfit of the late Victorian era with a touch of Regency. I want it!
I love Anne's outfits and would totally wear them today 😍😍
Oooh, haven't heard of this show (American here) but DEFINITELY looking it up now!
It's good! There's also just the finale left in America. I think the UK is some episodes behind, for some reason.

HBO
Anne Lister is high key my hero and fashion goals imo
The so-called photo of Anne Lister in the Sunday Times magazine last Sunday just isn't. Lister died in 1840 in Russia, the year the earliest recorded portrait was taken. The photo of a standing lady in the magazine is from around 1855. Sadly, there are no photos of Lister.
I live in Halifax and i use to work at Shibden Hall, the place and its history is amazing, to this day i still think of Shibden as being my home haha. Right now in Halifax we are all things Anne Lister, we have a wonderful display of the costumes used in the series Gentleman Jack at Bankfield Museum, it is very interesting
Best show ever. Waiting for the next episode. Bring it on! Hurry!
FIRST TIME HEARING ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION AND I AM HYPED
I wish she had had more portraits done. I haven't seen one of Walker at all. Anyone know of one?
if you look on her wikipedia page there is one? i think that might've been painted, but just one
Dear Suranne... "they didn't try to beautify me in any way" why would they? You're simply DIVINE au naturelle!
The way she walks to make her clothing move the way it does is so fantastic. Have to laugh too, as in high school in the 70's skirts with vests and boots were kind of the thing. How far we have come!!
My left ear is enjoying this video very much. :D
I am 60 years old. I am so glad to see this change! History should be inclusive. I most recently introduced a young man to the concept of two-souls and I was so pleased that although he is younger, it was I that introduced him. He said it made him feel so good, so acceptable. No one should feel so different as to be disenfranchised from each other.
Is it me or is the audio only on the left of my speakers? ;p
thank you BBC!
My Nan bloody loves this show it’s so funny she always like you need to start watching gentleman jack 😂😂
