Also, thought I'd mention, I used to dislike historical period dramas without exactly knowing why even though enjoy learning about history but now I realise it's because they were all so focused on straight storylines but history is gay too! Well done BBC and HBO

However I've always liked historical shows and films which contain violence like *Vikings,* and *Game of Thrones.* It's only in the last 18 months that I've started watching period dramas again, most of which I'd avoided, and some that I've most likely watched already but can't remember. All of the ones I've watched so far have been better than I expected, and even very good in a lot of cases, apart from *Wolf Hall* which bored me to death. I can't understand why it's so highly rated, as I'd give it a 6/10 at most. I've still got many more period drama box sets on *BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4, My5,* and *UKTV Play* to watch however, so there might be many more I find dull other than *Wolf Hall.*
@@kuivia I am aware of the consequences that would have arisen at the time if someone was openly homosexual however the proven existence of people like Anne Lister shows that tv shows like Gentleman Jack are fairly accurate. Watching Gentleman Jack ... How can I describe? This brings a version of Anne Lister inside of me SO ALIVE, I feel I can do anything, I'm capable of everything.
Suranne is so great! I never thought I’d be able to see her as a different character after watching her play Rachel in ‘Scott & Bailey’ for years. but her role in this show totally changed that such an amazing actress who portrayed Anne Lister brilliantly.
Please, please, produce another season (or more!) of Gentleman Jack! What a relief and validation. I’m spreading the word. This show is the reason I’m NOT cancelling HBO after the dismal ending of Game of Thrones.
I am completely enthralled with this series! I very much hope to see many more series to follow. The courage and bravery shown by this woman to not conform to society’s gender role is more than inspiring, especially to other lesbians, such as myself. I know that times have changed drastically, but I often wonder how much they would have changed had Anne Lister might not have been so confident in her sexuality with such a supportive family and so comfortable with herself as to not conform to the gender roles of that time periode. I know that she didn’t broadcast her sexuality, but she certainly didn’t go to tremendous lengths to hide it either. I’m just so thrilled to know that there is a true historical figure who was a lesbian and was not afraid to be completely in the closet.
I am enchanted with this show and in love with Anne Lester! Excitedly waiting for the next season! This show is beautifully done and thoroughly entertaining! Love the song too!
This series is wonderful in so many ways, especially if we look at the way Anne Lister understood gender roles and questioned why women shouldn't be capable of doing anything. And what makes it so successful, is it's talented cast and writers. Well done to all involed!

Powerful, strength of character, obviously charming, she survived her lifestyle in a ridiculously difficult period...but you overcame it. Fantastic work by all those involved! An incredible real life story that everyone should know more about!
I love this show
Happy Season 2 is happening
Good news...had not heard, many thanks.
my heart feels full and so satisfied with this show 😭❤👏
I am so grateful for this show! It is such an amazing show. I hope there will be many more seasons!
You could NOT have picked a BETTER ACTRESS for the role of Anne Lister. Watching from Australia. Loving this series.
THANK YOU BBC FOR MAKING THE BEST TV SERIES EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here a Spaniard lesbian follower! Congratulations Suranne Jones and Miss Walker (dont remember her name sorry) on their roles! Gentleman Jack is an amazing story which portrays lesbians in the 19th century! Good bless you, Anne Lister!!! BBC thanks for series like this one! 💙🇬🇧🌈
Suranne is great!!!!
Brilliant and definitely the right actress for the role, love Suranne Jones.
This show is SO BRILLIANT and the attention to detail is so AMAZING that I've been binge-watching all episodes for ONE WHOLE WEEK. It's on rinse and repeat. #OUTSTANDING
Me too...but every time I watch I find something more interesting!!! It is all perfection...the true story...the time period the incredible acting. Suranne Jones and Jemma Whelan are beyond marvelous. Fabulous theme song too.
@@chrisibitz1497 Totally agree with you Chris! I just realized, after infinite amount of re-watching, their timeline is TOO accurate. Anne Lister received the wedding invitation on 19 September and then after that Anne and Ann's first kiss at the hut is after that, and based on her diaries, the timeline is extremely accurate (I think their first kiss is 27 September?). And YAASSSS the theme! I love how they use the same opening theme but changes the tune and melody according to the feel / the scene!
Not usually fussed with period dramas, but was told this was a must watch. Watched whole series in 4 days. Brilliant
@@andrewswift2856 A TV show we didn't know we need!

Thank you BBC for an amazing series, I honestly have never seen such an enthralling story on TV. Great score, great casting, Perfect. That last episode was just so moving and uplifting.
Watching Gentleman Jack ... How can I describe?
This brings a version of Anne Lister inside of me SO ALIVE, I feel I can do anything, I'm capable of everything.
watched the whole series and fell in love with this character ...thanks Sally Wright
I love the series watched every episode. And the best thing about it no tv adds
THIS IS THE BEST SHOW EVER, THANK YOU
Soooo good. And thank you HBO for bringing GJ to the rest of the world. I’m from Brazil and GJ is one of my favorite shows right now! 💜
Suranne is so great! I never thought I’d be able to see her as a different character after watching her play Rachel in ‘Scott & Bailey’ for years. but her role in this show totally changed that such an amazing actress who portrayed Anne Lister brilliantly.
This show is awesome. Wonderful acting. Love it.
wonderful series, and I really enjoy these behind-the-scenes looks! can"t wait for season 2!
Please, please, produce another season (or more!) of Gentleman Jack! What a relief and validation. I’m spreading the word. This show is the reason I’m NOT cancelling HBO after the dismal ending of Game of Thrones.
Season 2 has already been confirmed =)
What a great series this was with some fine acting by a brilliant cast. The BBC still excel in this kind of period drama in my opinion.
This series is wonderful in so many ways, especially if we look at the way Anne Lister understood gender roles and questioned why women shouldn't be capable of doing anything. And what makes it so successful, is it's talented cast and writers. Well done to all involed!
Surranne is gorgeous and brilliant and anything she touches turns to gold. Great story..
I ❤️ you Gentleman Jack!
I love this show. A fan of the director. I just ordered the book. I await the next two episodes here in the USA. I get it on HBO. Love the show. Thank you to to all the cast and the director. Life changing movie. WOW
GENTLEMAN JACK
TOP NOTCH ACTING
10/10. Nice to see something good on TV
Suranne, what a great job you have done with Ms. Lister! THANK-YOU! Next stop USA!
That is how the 13th Doctor Who should have been like.
Well, I, for one, can wait for the 14th to be Anne!
@DW GEEK I really liked it tho...
I do love Jodie tho I think the writing was bad but she still delivered.
@DW GEEK well, almost everyone liked it, so who cares about what a few people think?
Well, if the first female Doctor had been this butch, hmmm - would have been problematic for a number of reasons - not necessarily homophobic ones... But given the writers/ing, I’m glad she isn’t.
This show is so wonderful. It combines everything I love in books, shows and movies. Powerful women, a medieval setting, an exiting plot, awesome interesting characters, based on a real story… getting all that in one show is extraordinary itself but on top of it SHE'S A LESBIAN.
Seriously great work I really don't know how I survived without Anne Lister to look up to.
Also sorry I'm so late, it only just came out in Germany.
My hat goes off to the real Anne Lister as a "sister" from the 18 hundreds. Powerful, strength of character, obviously charming, she survived her lifestyle in a ridiculously difficult period...but you overcame it. Wonderful your story should come alive today & everyone doesn't have to whisper it.
Suranne's choice to depict you was absolutely perfect. Where everyone gets to see the woman in Anne. Thank you Suranne for you memorable performance. You rocked!!!!!
Absolutely loving this show
My absolute favorite series !😍😍😍
Sophie and those sleeves. 😂
I think it’s hilarious when Mrs. Priestly walks in and Ann’s puffy sleeves are all smashed down.
I just found out Shibden Hall is being closed from the 18th of this month for filming for series 2!! Can't wait x
What a great show! I even got my mum to watch it, she's a great fan now too :)
just started watching it what an amazing production, brilliant characters, great look at how life was social political and fascinating look into Anne Lister because she kept so detailed diaries. so thankful they where not lost or destroyed. Applause to everyone involved in the project thankyou so much, would love to see a series 3 crossing my fingers
I absolutely LOVED this show!!! Sooo excited it’s coming back for S2!! Please don’t make us wait too long !
Estoy súper enganchada, y admiro el trabajo que están haciendo. Me encantó saber que está basada en un personaje real de hace 200 años. La serie es genial!
Everything about this marvellous series is perfect - can’t wait for each episode!
The opening of this series has to be one of The Best Ever …🎩 I looked forward to watching the ‘corset’ every time ! ✨🌟✨👌🏼 Greatly empowering life story, I applaud and appreciate the honest depiction of such an intriguing woman …who certainly lived life to the full. Bravo !!!
just started watching this, Up to ep 4 so far and have watched them all twice. Can't wait for ep 5.
I’ve seen the first two episodes of this and I’m so eager to watch more! I love historical dramas and it’s even cooler if it’s true!
It is a true story,..
I've downloaded and watched all 6 episodes so far, because it was annoying me listening to, and reading comments from Americans who don't have a clue what they're talking about.
Daniel Gardecki do you know when the 7th episode is coming up??
