Dr. Norman Finkelstein Presents "What Gandhi Says about Nonviolence, Resistance and Courage"

  • As the occupy movement and protests have blossomed around the world, there has been new interest in the work of Mahatma Gandhi, who championed nonviolent resistance during the struggle for Indian Independence. But while Gandhi's name has often been invoked, from Tahrir Square to Zuccotti Park, few have actually gone back to examine what Gandhi believed about the relationship between nonviolence, resistance and courage.
Norman Finkelstein has read deeply in Gandhi's collected writings as part of his exploration of how the longstanding conflict between Israelis and Palestinians might be brought to an end. He has found that some of what we think we know about Gandhi's views is incomplete, if not incorrect. Finkelstein's new book is an attempt to clearly lay out the basic principles of Gandhi's approach. A fuller appreciation of Gandhi's message will be of interest to those concerned about the Middle East as well as the more general struggle for peace and social justice worldwide.
Norman Finkelstein received his doctorate in 1988 from the Department of Politics at Princeton University. He is the author of six books besides this one on Gandhi.

No one person can do it . Many great people fought for the independence barring the personalities like Savarkar and Jinnah who were against Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose recruiting Indians for INA . Savarkar has actively encouraged Indians to join British India army but not the INA because he feared for the unity among people and how that would derail his Hindutva ideology based on Nazi ideology. And ofcourse he pleadged his allegiance to the British government. Gandhi , Netaji,Patel,Nehru and countless others were at the forefront of our struggle. That is why Gandhi is respected widely in the western world but abused by the BJP-RSS supporters. But credit to you people for single handedly destroying the social fabric of this country.

And they don't teach you how he used to abuse his wife or do celibacy experiments by sleeping naked with his grand daughter. Idgaf about ghandi.

gandhi at the age he proposed such solution was already obtained enough experience of humanity by working for east india shipping company as an attorney in africa in younger years his old age doctrine motto was a manifestation of self criticism of his own youth in most opposite ways it was manifestation of his own self actualization (self realization may be considered still suspicious) he was a product of his own consciouss and east india shipping company acculturation curriculums but there were young hegelians in his era to standa against him regardless their linguistic relativism and bounded reality india become independent only in 1950s starting a transition period took till 70s promoted gandhi political family to a most corrupted status these kinda things can be evaluated by those who is capable to suspend their judgement and live those times first hand good luck to young and curious minds who is dealing with those over 65

@@ManishKumar-uf9tx Regarding the first point .. Gandhi did request people to join the British army. This move made a lot of people question his "Ahimsa" stance. Gandhi also called Bhagat Singh misguided nationalist, but he did write to the viceroy and ,as per Irwin, did bring it up in their meeting.

Because they're both Zionists.. they criticize Israel a lot, but in the end they're still all about keeping a state of Israel at the expense of dispossessed Palestinians.
