That was an awesome sequence at the end--whoever stitched the clips together did it flawlessly. Kudos. And I couldn't tell a difference in the sound between the vintage and the reproduction.
At first I thought the 2019 had a creamier tone, then I noticed in your opening riffs you had the 58 on the bridge position pickup and the 2019 on the middle position. In the closing riffs you had them both on the same pickup and I couldn't hear a difference. So, if you're a collector, get the 58. If you're a player, get the 2019.

These series are great comparisons and kudos to Gibson Custom. But I sure wish a Gibson USA standard would compare as well since back in the 50s there was no Custom Shop. Or do they?

It's all in your head. If you don't look at the label switching on the outro, you wouldn't even notice a difference. I once thought I heard a difference between a FAV setting on a pedal (Iridium) and the current setting, except they were the same settings. And Marty's 'magical' reference to the '58 is also in his head. My '73 custom sounds and feels 'magical' to me cuz it's older than me, but in the end it's one of so many. Does sound great though.

I like the 2019, to my ears it sounds sweeter. I own a 1994 goldtop classic, after all these years it's still my favorite guitar, 60s slim neck a joy to play.
Either are really great guitars man. I think unless you’re a curator or collector buying for an investment, I say pick the one you’ll actually play the most and enjoy making music on! ✌🏻🙂🎼
With that opening jam, the custom shop was using both pickups while the vintage was in the bridge position. The outtro jam were both in bridge, and they sounded nearly identical to my destroyed-by-Badmotorfinger-ears. Smooth jams, tho!
Marty... which one really motivates you to play. I also think these are low volume low gain demos. If you open them up there will definitely be a difference. Also, when these things are recorded like this it really doesn’t do the ‘58 justice. In the room there would be a large difference. “The Magic” referred to

I have an INSANELY radical idea. Why not just make EVERY year of equal quality? Every company does it and I get it but I just wish that companies would say "If such and such year is our landmark then that will always be the bare minimum we shoot for".
It's a redundant question. If you can afford the 58,you'd probably already have the reissue. Nobody is going to empty their bank account for a vintage guitar, but they will for a reissue. If you're in the market to buy the vintage LP, it's spare cash. The reissue, you saved for.
I think both are awesome but in my opinion if you get the chance to get a reasonable price on a 58 les Paul u take it cuz that chance doesn’t come often. You’ll be able to get a 2019 custom shop forever

@@52factorial precisely- I've played quite a few Bursts, 335s and Goldtops, and one thing is for sure...every single guitar I've played with real PAFs in it sounded different from the next one (with some obvious commonalities) some of them weren't all that great and others had that "thing" we all hear about. That being Gibson did a damn fine job in 2019 on make the right changes (luxe caps, proper pots and switchcraft jacks and switches) The new ones are pretty close, and if the difference is 200k between then new and old... I think we all can get the tone we want at the price that we can work with.

The 2019 does sound better and should since tech has come along a long way from 1958. The difference is gonna be the fit and feel. Years of playing has gotta made the guitar, especially that neck, a really nice broken in feel.
If you have played a PRS you would know what a quality sound, and feel is like compared to Gibson, but for investment only an original 59 will make you money, but a PRS will make you sound and look good.
There was no shot heard around the world because origonally nobody really liked the les paul with humbuckers and its funny that intially everyone thought pafs were very muddy sounding and the guitar was a flop but as music changed and rock get heavier severL years later in the mid 60s and people discovered that a les paul with humbuckers would drive the amp harder then the patent sticker pickups that were in current 335s and and the sg at the time. So the shot heard around the world was delayed by a few years.
I love the true twangy-ness and brightness of that 58. You can't mimic 60 years of playing and sitting. The wood is going to continue to dry out and lighten. You CANNOT replicate it. So go with your heart. But there is only 1 true goldtop.

i have a '58 custom shop VOS (LEFTY),Its a fabulous guitar, those big fat necks are without doubt the best IMO,they are so comfortable.
The 2019 sounds a bit smoother to me but I love that slight grittiness from the 58

I can’t act like the 19 isn’t overall better with the clarity, but the fuzz of the 58 is so unique and funky sounding you can’t not love it.

I picked up a Les Paul Standard 50s, heritage cherry sunburst. The gold top is amazing. I’d prefer the 2019 over the 1958.

Personally, I'd go with the 2019 Custom as far as playability goes, I like the neck profile better.

My Tokai Les Paul Custom, does the job tbh and is better than the expensive Gibson I sold, plus, if I drop it, it doesn't cost thousands.
The '58 has a more open voice. More clarity. Sounds much better than the 2019.

I've owned many Gibson Custom Shop guitars but I have to say the 2019 56 Les Paul is awesome
