Riding mower cranks but won't start

  • Today I am working on this YardMan ( Yard machine ) riding mower with a no start situation. A week ago, nine days ago I put this lawn tractor
    up. It was running fine. I was having trouble with the transmission but was waiting to get one of my other units running.
    This no start turned out to be an easy fix & could apply to just about any brand mower.

    From Paul. Engine will turnover, but won't start. I replaced the ignition coil, spark plug, cleaned flywheel, adjusted everything, but no fire. Starter fluid doesn't help. 11 hp Briggs 35 years old.

      Hi Paul, Have you checked the compression. If you adjusted the vales your rings or valve guides may be shot. Also more of a push mower issue but if the flywheel key is slightly off it will affect the timing. Let me know if this was of help. Joe Z

Did you check compression? Does your engine have OHVs? They may need adjustment. Next & often over looked is the woodruff key. Check to see if it is sheared. If it is you would still get spark but at the wrong time. Let me know if this was of help.

      This could be a project, 2 cases of it being "worked" on. If you can get a wiring schematic it may pay just to rewire from scratch. Also if yo disconnect the kill switch wire you can check to see if you have spark by jumping the starter then proceed from there. Let me know if I can be of help.

    • @JOEZEP54
      @JOEZEP54  Рік тому +1

      Hi Patrick, start with the basics. It is not starting with started fluid so I would next check for spark. If there is not any spark check the kill wire to the coil. Doing this you have to be very careful, disconnect the kill wire from the coil & then try to start. If it starts you will have to pull the spark plug wire to stop the engine. Use a pair of insulated pliers to pull the wire. If it does not start change the spark plug. If still no start / no spark I would next change the coil. Let me know if this was of help.

The next day it ran fine, but after a short while it really lost some get up and go by going very slowly back to the garage and now it won't start. • @JOEZEP54
      @JOEZEP54  2 роки тому +1

      poppaluv, It could be the cause hard to tell without being able to go through
      it. Check the fuel line, disconnect after the fuel filter to see if fuel runs out or just trickles out, BE CAREFUL. If the gas is running out freely your filter & line are ok. If it starts & then dies open the gas cap & put it back on loosely to see if it will run. If it does the gas cap vent is plugged. Check your spark plug. Look for oil or carbon build up or if it has a good spark. It can also be blown head gasket. If so this is not a difficult repair. You can check the compression with a pressure gauge, if you do not have one AutoZone, Advance Auto have lenders.

      I had one that had a valve stuck after sitting.
      I would first do a leak down test.
      My first thought would be the valves.
      Next it could be a shear pin
      Although you are getting gas the carburetor
      may need an adjustment.
      Do you have fresh gas? Old gas would have water in it
      & that would keep it from starting. Do not keep it going with
      the starter or it will burn the starter out.

      It could be but from what you described it sounds like a bad coil. Next time you try to start it check for spark or if it starts then stalls check for spark. Did you check to see if it has spark? You can spray a little carb cleaner into the carb & try starting. If it runs until the little carb cleaner is burnt up you have a fuel delivery issue.

    So how did you replace the kill wire?

    • @JOEZEP54
      @JOEZEP54  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Bob, Thank you for stopping by. On That mower I just followed the wire back to find the short. Did not have to replace it. There was plenty of wire so I cut where it was shorting out. Spliced it together & used heat shrink tubing then made sure it was not rubbing against anything. That kill wire goes up to the ignition switch. When you shut the mower down it shorts the coil to ground.

      What is a kill wire. Been watching about stuff to understand it.

    • @JOEZEP54
      @JOEZEP54  2 роки тому

      @@jennyandrews1671 When you turn the key to off, a wire that is connected to the coil shorts/grounds out the current. This will prevent any spark.
      A wire is also on the safety devices.
      For instance if you do not step on the brake
      you will not be able to start. In this case usually
      it prevents current going to the starter.
      On push mowers this short/grounded coil
      happens when you release the bail. Let me know if this is of help. Joe Z
