It's way more than a sign, it's something words can't describe. I'm old enough to remember the fights, they were always a cultural marker. The man was an icon, especially after he refused the governments offer for a trip to Vietnam, to kill or be killed in a senseless war. It gave hope to the hopeless, yes. But it he walked the talk, was a proud and beautiful black man. I'm an old white woman, and this made me cry. Mohammed Ali was the symbol of the end of US Imperialism for exploited people around the world. He was a fighter in every sense of the word. UA-cam should still have his Olympic fight up. In any case, I'm really pleased to see the care taken here. ♥

Such a different type of project. Well done, supporting your city's culture and history.
So surprised at how well this has survived the British weather.
Looking forward to the next episode and particularly the lettering and the finish.

I genuinely love the creaky floor boards in your studio. Reminds me of the old homes I used to live in as a child!

I have. Opulent of creaky floorboards upstairs. Was going to fix them but realised they were helpful .

Exterior house paint is designed to chalk-form a thin layer of loose material--in order to let the rain carry off the dirt that lands on it. So maybe that's the medium he used.

@@sciangear4782 I had my first major shock of that sort when I interned at a school for the first time, in a class of twelve-year olds learning a foreign language using the same textbook I'd used almost 20 years earlier. The kids had to say when they were born and my brain had a properly hard time computing that yes, in 2013 twelve-year olds could and would have been born in the 2000s rather than the 1980s or 90s.
Unlike one of my old teachers I didn't say anything out loud though. When we were reading about some historic sports events she asked us: "Well, in 1967, how old were you then?" and we told her "Errrm... we weren't even alive then!". Only a few minutes later she went: "But in 1976 you surely were alive, right?". Erm... no. We were all born in 1985 or late 1984. If I remember her own age correctly, she seemed to think we were her age rather than young enough to be her pupils.

It is wonderful that someone who appreciates what this sign means is given the job of restoring it. Thanks so much for sharing the history of the club and the background to its establishment. Thatcher days were bad days and what she did should never be glossed over.

I am really looking forward to seeing the second half cleaned up. Also even though I'm a patreon member I come over here and watch these on UA-cam so that you get a check from them as well and as a UA-cam premium member you get more from me. I'm saying this so that anyone else in the chat that might see my message knows that if they're supporting someone on patreon they should support them on UA-cam as well.

Maybe you end up doing this but I would paint the back with outdoor mold resistant in case the frame fails. Even in the split it looks discolored.

With some of those wood fillers you can wait till it is cream cheese consistency and then cut it back flush. That saves having to sand the excess.

I realize the need to be meticulous when cleaning historic paintings but considering the paint and materials used for this sign, it looks like it could have simply been sprayed with a mild cleaning solution and wiped off with a clean cloth without causing any damage. Are there other factors that I'm not aware of?

  • @hpdepasse5997

you have a photo of the "young" painting, but do you have the original photo of the boxer? the painter reproduced a photo, it should not be difficult to find, the original can explain some details.
the plywood has several crossed layers, you should not worry about the direction of the wood.
there is never any paint on the frame, it seems nailed over the painting, maybe it should have been removed and put behind? I think this frame was added to the assembly, when the person understood that they could not hold the painting, a screw and a screwdriver, but that they could nail a frame and drive the screws in in advance to hold only the painting and the screwdriver.

Cant see the point in hand sanding building timber just a waste of money paying someone for hours of work when it should be 10 minutes. So conserving 80s plywood and timber like its a frame from the 1600s then goes on to destroy the art by removing the vinyl letters and intends to paint his own! Is this video a joke?
