SHADES OF BLUE - OH HOW HAPPY (RARE VIDEO FOOTAGE). AT LAST I'VE GOT A BETTER VIDEO OF THIS GROUP SINGING THIS :-) GROUP MEMBERS INCLUDED NICK MARINELLI, ERNIE DERNAI, LINDA ALLEN AND BOB KERR.THE SHADES OF BLUE WERE AN AMERICAN BLUE - EYED SOUL VOCAL GROUP FROM LIVONIA, MICHIGAN. A SUBURB OF DETROIT. THEIR BIGGEST HIT WAS 'OH HOW HAPPY' IN 1966, WRITTEN BY EDWIN STARR, WHICH REACHED NUMBER 12 ON THE BILLBOARD HOT 100 CHART, NUMBER 16 ON THE US BILLBOARD R&B CHART, AND THE TOP 10 IN CANADA. THAT SAME YEAR THE SONG 'LONELY SUMMER', AGAIN WRITTEN BY STARR, REACHED NUMBER 72, AND THEN 'HAPPINESS' PEAKED AT NUMBER 78 IN THE HOT 100. THE GROUPS LATER SINGLE FAILED TO CHART AND THEY DISBANDED IN 1970.
I last heard this when I was a little boy. Now almost 67, always sleeping with God on my mind, I woke up and the song entered my mind. I had to do a search and found this gem. Wow! Thanks, and God bless you! I must share with my siblings.
I remember we all thought they were a black group.. Shows you good songs and vocals can come from anywhere .. This was a gem .
I was a youngster when this came out. I'd wake to it on my tube clock radio. I always thought this was a black group! This is another example of Blue-eyed soul and im so happy I lived it when it was new. Thanks
A totally uplifting, beautifully produced song. Easily one of the best of the 60's. Love when it's played on 60's on 6!
Bob Kerr and Linda Allen are my parents! :) So proud of all their accomplishments and so happy to see this video, as they are few and far between! Art Cervi was their tour manager, so fun to see the card too! Love seeing the old footage of them performing because I was just a baby when "Oh How Happy" hit the charts and they went on tour. Thank you for sharing this, it means the world to me! (And I love reading all the wonderful comments...makes my heart happy!) I will share this with my mom as well...she will be happy to see it too....but unfortunately my dad passed away almost 9 yrs ago. I know he would've really been thrilled to know that so many people still love his music! Thank you again!
Shelly, loved this song and The Shades of Blue! How cool to be able to say your parents were in this group! Please let your Mom know that I listen to this song at least (1) once a week. It still holds up very well in today's world! (Never knew they were from Livonia!!! After all these years, who knew!! Born and raised in Detrot myself)
Shelly, I too loved this song. So did my family and everyone else in the neighborhood. I saw them perform it on American Bandstand. But my favorite song was the B-side, "Little Orphan Boy." I was born with a disability - spina bifida - and had just gotten out of the hospital after 9 months! (imagine the bill in today's dollars!). Anyway "Little Orphan Boy" basically summed up my feelings. Being african american back then did not hold much promise - especially if you couldn't walk. The neighborhood kids (all black) called me "orphan boy" because my own brothers and sisters told everyone I was just a distant cousin "visiting from Michigan." After seeing that the Shades of Blue were white, and sounding as good as they did, I felt there was - in some folks eyes - a future for me. I am sixty years old today and doing way better than anyone expected. Oh, How Happy!
Only seen your comment...Thankyou so much for the kind comment...wow your parents!! :-) sorry to hear about your dad passing...got a few videos of them singing on my channel that you may like to see?

Edward S. Moyer Thank you for the kind words and I will definitely let my mom know...she will be thrilled! :)
Crip2Go It's awesome to hear how many people around you listened to Shades of Blue...and actually, "Little Orphan Boy" was one of my favorites when I was young too! It had so much raw emotion, that it drew me in and I always thought it gave hope to people who were going through some kind of difficult life situation. I'm glad it gave you hope as well and I'm glad you are doing well and still going strong! :) Thank you for sharing that with me!
I heard this song a long time ago but didn't know who sang it. Always thought it was was Percy Sledge. Years later I heard the Edwin Starr version and although it sounded good, I knew it wasn't the version I heard years before. Now I know it's the Shades of Blue. So many thanks for posting it.
I remember riding a bus in Brooklyn with friends. We were teenagers and a young man was on the bus with one of those prehistoric boom boxes. He really was just a boy back from vietnam. Away from home for a long time. So he was playing this song like it was new and some of my friends giggled. I didn't. I sat next to him and sang along. It was this song and after all these decades I love this song and remember that young soldier who was on the bus with me that summer night..Oh how happy that has made me...
Frances Brooks Thankyou for sharing that :-)
Bensonhurst Sheepshead boy here,,:)
You made me cry, Frances Brooks
Playing it or listening to it as it played on the radio while you were
on the bus? What year was this?
@@sistervluv3556 I believe it was 1971 or 72. I was on a city bus and a young soldier was playing it on his boom box. Like many of our boys coming home he was a bit behind the times so to speak. And yes this grandma remembers it like it was yesterday.
My hubby requested this at the anniversary party our daughters planned for us. I went to pieces, and loved how he held me up throughout the dance. One of my all-time favorites. It is absolutely beautiful in its simplicity.
This song came up in my spirit and had to hear it, my dad loved this song but I absolutely had no idea the group was white until right now. Still, love it.
My husband and I chose this song as "Our Song" years ago and we still love it!
LOVED this song when I was growing up. Could not wait for it to come on the radio.
Another Masterpiece for future generations to enjoy! Thank you Shades of Blue!
One of the all time greatest songs.
Geez, Nick was such a good-looking guy with such a great sound.
It seems every blue eyed soul song will certainly make the charts!!!🎼🎹🎸🎵🎵
The good ones do, yes.
This song came to mind on this Father’s Day...Rest in Paradise, daddy🙏🏾
Greetings Shelly! I am responding to your posting very late since it first appeared; it is 2021! In 1966 I was 14 and lived at 10150 Morley, (a student at Mackenzie High!) across the street from your parents. I was the oldest with six younger brothers and your parents trusted me to babysit for you…what an honor it was to be in the company of your mother…so beautiful and kind to a very introverted wallflower of a teen! I remember an outfit the color of a brilliant blue, like the brightest ocean…with feathered decor at the end of the long sleeves…gorgeous! The neighbors next door to us, the Bouchard family, knew how much I admired your mother’s sense of style and the Christmas of 1967 gave me a pair of white Go-Go boots. I could not wear them with the same Glamour as your mother…but I could pretend! I recently went looking for “Oh How Happy…” when my favorite priest sang it at mass as a celebration of Faith and Love. That is the Legacy of your parents…with you…an Angel of a baby! I, too, am sorry for the loss of your father and hope you and your mother are still enjoying singing and dancing! Take Care…
A great rendition of a great song, and one that just sticks in your head! Another example of the wide range of terrific musical talent that came out of SE Michigan and Detroit. Outstanding lead vocal and excellent backing harmonies. ShellyBean--give greetings to Mom and Dad. When I saw Edwin Starr in concert in Muncie IN in the 1970s, he did "War" and "25 Miles", but I don't think he did "Oh How Happy", but let's be sure to give him credit. Best to you!
THIS CAME OUT IN 1966 AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I'VE EVER SEEN THEM.
Are you shocked
YEP..ME TOO..MY SISTER HAD THIS 45 SINGLE..LITTLE ORPHAN BOY..2 GREAT TUNES!❤
I sang this song to my husband on our 25th! Love it,

SWEET, ❤SWEET BLUE EYED SOUL SOUNDS OF "YESTERYEAR"
Great song! Brings me back to the 60's, thanks for posting!
great after 51 years!!!!!!
Thank you for posting. I remember this 🎤🎼🎶 & it's lyrics. It brings back so many memories as a child in the 1960s esp now that in my 60s!
So beautiful. 😏🤗😗😉😋
This record is a GEM of '60s pop music. Shades of Blue recorded the definitive version but I have also heard Edwin Starr (the songwriter) sing it with fellow Motown artist Blinky which is not as good as this version in my opinion. It is a mystery why this record was not a Billboard chart smash but it at least was a moderate, and in some areas, huge hit. It's magical in its way!
Great Song 🎵
Best dance moves on this song.
I remember seeing this on Robin Seymour’s Swingin Time.
That guy can sing.what a voice.
LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS! Great song, great group!
I've been listening to this song since I was a little girl over 55 years and never knew that this was a group of white men and women,,, with this beautiful soul sound 👏👏👏🎤💞
Written by Charles Hatcher, better known as Edwin Starr, who had hits with Twenty Five Miles and War (What is it good for).
THANKS FOR THE POST
I forget about this wonderful song and then when I hear it it makes me feel warm and nastolgic. Great, great song!
Wow exactly 50,000 views
I love this song and i love the shades of blue
I've always loved that song. I remember hearing it on the radio and people singing it. I was watching a documentary about the history of the AFL. In one of the segments I heard the song. I looked up the title of the song on google. Now I know who sung the song. It's part of my collection now.
Am wondering if anyone knows where to download the piano notes to Oh How Happy? Knockout song, and remember the English pirate ships giving it a good airing. I love these moments on You Tube where a daughter, son or relative emerges from the mist!
Nice upbeat song!
Before seeing this video I thought it was a Black singing group. I remember this song well. Fabulous.
Killer song!
One of my favorite song brings me back to the better times in life.
This song is my ringtone. And that cutie lead singer reminds me of Nicholas Cage’s character in Peggy Sue Got Married!
Always thought this was a black group. Love the choreography!
it was written by Edwin Starr, a black singer/songwriter
Fabulous song !!!! Great memories !!!!❤
I love this song brings back some good memories
this is music enough said love it
True harmony! I was 16 when this came out. Thanks for the great memories!
I love this song. But I always thought the performers were black.
MOTOR CITY 🏙️🏙️ SOUND AT IT'S BEST FROM 1966.
I remember this song, but not the group.Cant remember who else has done it.Thanks.
The Jackson 5
Nick Marinelli was like the Jimmy Beaumont of Detroit. So smooth.
Good comparison! I was thinking the same thing. Nick and Jimmy; two incredibly talented blue-eyed soul singers! Coincidentally, I'm from Pittsburgh, a big Jimmy and the Skyliners fan, and my brother Bob Babbitt (Motown Funk Bro) is playing bass on this awesome tune.
Very sorry to hear about Bob. My condolences. He meant a lot to many, many people.
I was born about 15 years after this song came out. I've heard this song on the radio over the years. It's a great feel-good tune. This might've been the very end of doo wop music, which is a shame because there were so many great melodies. At that time, mid-60s, music was becoming more edgy and this type of music was too "square."
Shades of Blue"boppin with the bird"ROBIN SEYMOUR"on CKLW ch.9 in Detroit Windsor on SWINGTIME
Remember " Merry Christmas from CKLW " Then we moved on to 101 and the Buzzard
LITTLE ORPHAN BOY ON B SIDE..2 WONDERFUL SONGS!❤
Nice!
Loved the group and the song...again, thank you for The Swingin' Time footage. Awesome!
Wow.
What the hell. He's white I didn't know that he had a very good song. It's beautiful😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
FANTASTIC
Have not heard this song in years. am I that old?
This was the first song I learned as 5 year old
Cheerful and heartwarming arrangement of a delicate little song. You’ve brought joy to my empty life…
“Deutschland Deutschland ueber Alles…”
Love it
twas very impressive
Nick doing a "Ruffin" up there, he's way ahead of the other "Shades" visually, nothing bad ,just what a lead singer/showman should do. He is very handsome and soft spoken to this day. I admire the choreography, though steadfast, much better than their competition (Mag-Men or Rationals) during that era.
Came here thru the Bob Babbitt FaceBok fan page. Bob was bassist on the song, one of over 40 top 200 tunes he played on. Bob was a Motown Funk Bro and gave it that Motown sound, as he did on several Edwin Starr hits.
Chuck Kreinar Thankyou so much for checking it out and leaving that info...always greatly appreciated.
+Chuck Kreinar - The other Motown connection is that this was written by Edwin Starr, though he technically wasn't part of Motown until 1967. I also love Ewdin Starr & Blinky's duet version from 1969.
Edwin Starr❤
FALL SOUL GOLD 🥇 from 1966.
Awesome song
Dave young Bolton palais.what a dj.were is he now.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Wow
I worked with Nick for awhile at general motors back in mid 2000's at design center.. Wonder how he's doing now.
Did the people at GM know he was once a star?
@@David_R922 I don't think they had a clue. He was an awesome guy to work with. Very humble.
I went to school with his wife, Carol, a very sweet girl.
Damn. That white boy can sing.
In addition to his duties on the show, Art Cervi was also Bozo the Clown around Detroit and Windsor!
+DaveConleyPortfolio Thankyou for that info :-)
At least he kept the BOZO tradition alive.
i recall Bozo well, was there more than one actor who performed as same?
Bozo was a franchise operation run out of Chicago by a man named Larry Harmon. He would train guys to host the kid show in a particular region, supplying them with Bozo cartoons and other materials. Supposedly he trained a couple of hundred different bozos, and he was very strict about making them all play the part as if was the same guy.
The song was written by Edwin Starr, a black singer-songwriter. According to Wikipedia, Starr sings the lead vocal on the record however no reference is given. Starr's own recording of the song can be found on youtube.
Good thing you mentioned he's 'a 'black singer-songwriter'..sheesh. Any self-respecting admirer of Rock and/or R&B music will know who Edwin Starr is. Come on, man.
Where on Wikipedia did it say he sang the lead vocal? I don’t see anything in either the song’s entry or the one for Edwin Starr. I sure don’t hear any resemblance between the voice on this version and Edwin Starr’s.
kool; thought they were black
Definately a "Gospel" feel to it.
Bobbin with Robin😊
👏👏👏👏👍
When I heard this Song working overnight in 2007 I thought Sam Cooke Was singing this song 🙂
It's a shame so many people seem concerned whether they are black or white. Why does skin color matter anymore?
I don't think any of these comments are suggesting racist overtones. Fact of the matter is when I bought this record as a little white kid in the Midwest I assumed it was another of the Detroit black groups, the label was located in Detroit, and the song was written by Edwin Starr. The lead singer does sound sweetly soulful. Those commenting are just expressing what many of us thought but in this case I don't think there is reason for any shame related to race. We have plenty enough of real hateful racism in our country; this is just white fans of the record expressing their surprise; don't over-think it.
Oh that singer is so dam hot😍😍😍
killer tune for sure
0:30 Yes!
Have been on the Hy Lit show.
:)
I thought the Jackson 5 was the originals. Opps
I always thought they were black. That's soul music.
lets dance ktf
Do roo, do roo, do roo, do roo do...
Oh how happy (you have made me)
Oh how happy (you have made me)
I have kissed your lips
A thousand times
And more times than i can count
I have called you mine
You have stood by me
In my darkest hours
Sing
Oh how happy (you have made me)
Oh how happy (you have made me)
Oh how happy (you have made me)
Oh how happy (you have made me)
In our years together
We've got stormy weathers
But our love has been so strong
For some how we carry on
Sing
Oh how happy (you have made me)
Oh how happy (you have made me), ooh, ooh
You brought joy
To my empty life, yeah
And all that was wrong
You made it right
Our love (our love)
Our love (our love)
Our love, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah...
Oh how happy (you have made me)
Oh how happy (you have made me)
Oh how happy (oh how happy)
Oh how happy (oh how happy)
Oh how happy, ooh... You...
You have made me (you have made me)
You have made me (you have made me)
You have made me (you have made me)

I THOUGHT THAT THEY WERE A BLACK GROUP 😆😆
Oh. They're white.
I did not know that.
I thought they were black.

I thought they were black
I thought they were black too ..... wow what rhythm. RMP
I remember a Cute Boy in my 8th Grade Class at Calverton Jr. High in Baltimore, Md used to sing this Song all the time. He had such a Nice Voice too! Because of him ... I Love this Song to this Day!!!
@@cyneathiajones-gray5958 haha that put a smile on my face
Edwin Starr wrote this song the Jackson 5 did it better but that was hit song in 1966
