    *Hey guys, thank you for stopping by to hear my experience, journey, and story in Audio. I would love to hear about your experiences as well in the comments. However I would like to keep the comment section a civil, safe and positive space; All snake oil comments and/or non-civil negativity will be filtered and deleted. Thank you for your understanding*
    *edit: I noticed that some are commenting that I proposed "microphonic" for a reason to use cable lifters. I apologize if the communication wasn't clear; I DO NOT know the cause for my experience and all reasoning are speculations at best based on my experience, I am merely sharing them. I am not suggesting it is microphonic or any other reasons as to why I hear a difference. It is a fact that microphonic is in consideration with many market cable lifters and thus why I decided to add sorbothane to my lifters but the primary reason for using sorbothane was for it to stop slipping around and help me better route/organize the cables.*

    Cable lifters are ridiculous if you ask me. I do believe keeping cables away from each other can cut down on magnetic interference, but decent cables should prevent that problem. And even then if it is not worth exploring or trying or you tried and didn't find much difference, etc... then you move on. I don't believe in spending silly money on such things especially when that money can be spent elsewhere in upgrading the system

    No scientific proof as do so many other things in life make a difference without scientific proof !!!!!!
    BUT science grows out of what is OBSERVATION !!!!!!!!!! ....we often do forget that and as so many still believe that .....and state that when it measures the same ........it sounds the same..............resistors, amplifiers, capacitors, integrated circuit boards, interconnects , connectors etc................We know that NO different component does sound the same as long as the electronics are capable to express these differences .............changing a transistor or a tube does indeed not make a big difference or even not at all in a highly processed circuit mass produced and with a lot of FB loops...........but that is not our way of experiencing our passion, the simpler the system , the less processing ,the more only ONE component change will make an audible difference ...... by revealing the flavour of its sonic caracter , just like the cuisine of a chef cook , all is in the synergy and the right amounts of the spices he uses and mixes.........versus the uniform and standard with the taste processed food of mass consumption fast food from MC Donald .......

    I use cable lifters, whether they make a difference is debatable. They were cheap, $135 bucks for 10 lifters, and they do make the system look better from as aesthetic point of view. If there is any difference, possibly a smoother sound with tighter imaging, the improvements are very small. But it doesn't matter, providing you don't break the bank with them, why not give them a try, it is not going to hurt!🙂

    An even quicker & cheaper way to try this is to use the cardboard tubes from toilet rolls. Just quash one end, cut a V with scissors and then restore the tube shape. I tried these for the first time when friend was visiting, and we were both amazed that we heard a clear difference. If you try it and hear the difference too then you can find a more elegant solution - but to check the concept toilet roll tubes work just fine.

      @zizendorf 2 місяці тому

      @@andrewaajohnson7584 I save money by cutting lengths of old garden hose. They insulate the signal and provide air around the cable to prevent resonance. Had I known about this sooner I would have kept my original Sounddesign stereo from the early 70's. They improve the width and depth of the soundstage, provide separation between instruments in the holographic image we're all looking for and the garden green looks great in my listening room. They look very expensive when you buff polish the cut ends. As well, I also noticed a significant improvement in the power of my amp. Previously, there must have been a huge loss of power draining into the floor.

  • @gordthor5351
    @gordthor5351 2 роки тому +6

    Come on JAY. You claim the reasoning for lifters are to stop microphonics and then you say that only some cables are affected. If a speaker cable conductor is suitable to carry an audio signal (frequencies) then it sure can carry "microphonics". All amplification in a system comes before the amps output, so how do these tiny vibrations (microphonics) possibly make any sound come out of your speakers? All of these ridiculous ideas (to rip off people for large sums of money) are based on a modicum of truth, yet not pertinent to the situation. If you have microphonic noise going into the very low level signal in your DAC, then you might have a reasonable argument, because that low level signal will be amplified hundreds of times louder.
    Do you hear a microphonic noise come out of your speakers if you stomp really hard and vibrate the floor (much stronger than a speaker would), when your amp is on (idling) or off? Of course not and it is just as ridiculous to claim that you hear amplified microphonics from a speaker cable that is connected passed all amplification stages.
    Microphonics are real, but the affect on speaker wires is silly. You keep talking about how you are very scientific minded, but how can you be with regards to electrical circuits when you clearly don't understand how an audio signal moves from the source to the speakers.
    I am not "angry" and I won't call it "snake oil", but I will always call out misinformation or disinformation (especially in this crazy age). Is it really a bad thing to want to help people not blindly believe in irrational nonsense, where shady people will take their money on useless products.
    I don't doubt that you perceived a difference between lifters and no lifters (although not consistent by your own admission), but science can explain why this happens. The science of psychology is very aware of our (humans) plethora of personal biases. The placebo effect can really fool us into believing unscientific nonsense. Especially if a person wasted $5000 on magical cables. They will really want to hear a positive difference and the placebo effect will happily oblige.
    Speakers can resonate objects (like our eardrums) through the air, so how are you going to stop microphonics from still getting on your speaker wires? If you like the looks and "feel" that you hear a positive difference, then good for you, but I am still going to call out such nonsense because I my understanding of electronics and science is clearly broader than yours. I don't get sucked into the nonsense of "skin effect" in audio band cables, because I know that skin effect is only a problem well into the megahertz range. Yet another example of how the charlatans take a tidbit of truth and use it in a nonapplicable scenario (audio bandwidth) to fool people out of their money. It's deceptive and disgusting.

    • @Jayiyagi
      @Jayiyagi  2 роки тому +7

      Hi Gord. Despite your claim, you do sound angry. Especially if you are making bunch of assumptions to reinforce your affirmation bias when you can simply try yourself and move on if it makes no difference for your system. I never claimed lifters to make a sonic difference because they stop microphonic. In fact I am unsure to what the reasoning is and hypothesized (very different from making an assertive statement) that as possibly one of the reasons as many cable lifters have that as a feature (could it be all in my head as you said? Possibly but you cannot claim that either unless you come and examine my brain activity) and even if it was all in my head… im getting more enjoyment out of it (endorphins) so who are you to sit at a high horse and look down on what I do for my happiness and enjoyment?
      Your comment is fine until you start sitting at a high horse and making assumptions as to how much better you are than me. You made a judgment based on assumptions risen from the fact that I tried and used these tweaks that are deemed unscientific. I know many engineers, professionals and PhD that subscribe to cables and lifters even if it does not make sense to them with their background. It is because they don’t try to understand everything and admit to not knowing everything. I guess the phrase “the more you know, the more you realize how little you know” is repeated by many experts for a reason.
      Thanks for the lengthy message and I appreciate your knowledge and notion of wanting to know the causations for such experiences that cannot be measured or simply explained. I have no intentions of misleading you or anyone. I have not put out information outside of my experiences. (Microphonic being a feature of many cable riser part was a fact - again, not saying that is what causes changes or a reason to use lifters) In fact, I do not try to sell anything expensive in this video at all… I humbly ask you to step down from your high horse as nobody gave you the right to sit on that throne other than your ego.

    Power cables are buried in the ground; running through studs, down the studs, across ceiling joists and god knows where else. To think that lifting them off the ground for a few feet at the end of a run just doesn't seem to make any plausible sense when you factor in the rest of the chain. The fact of the matter is the power of suggestion is very strong with humans and if you are expecting a change then you will eventually find one. Focusing on the music or whatever can easily reveal details you may never had heard before. Slight shifts in positioning while listening can change the results...
    There are just way too many variables that can easily explain any perceived difference.
    I'm not disputing you heard what you heard. I'm actually sure you did. Whether lifting the cables is what caused it is open for debate.

    You know how in school we learn of how electricity flows in wires as a hose with marbles in it or water. Apparently technically that's not true and really it's the magnetic field surrounding the wire that carries the energy. I'm not a physicist but I guess in theory a changing magnetic field like in AC can interact with dielectric materials like concrete, magnetize it and alter that signal. Like I personally don't think it makes a difference, but I'm open to the idea that at least scientifically it could.

How does it change my system? more AIR less congestion better sound stage. I also dont coil the run. You do have to experiment and my own experience if different from yours as gettingy cables off the carpert really sound better. It comes down to those who have tin ears and simply either dont hear the difference or arent skilled enough to understand what they are hearing. I have had friends over and switched components like CD players that really sounded different in a big way to my ears and had them say they couldn't hear the difference.

    Hi Jay and guys - it looks to me like the cables you're showing here are the GR Research - that's a good sign! I'm using Kimber Crystal 24 and have them lifted on home-made oak 7" or 17cm lifters and must say, I heard a big difference. Faster transients, more energy in high top end, better instrument definition ans soundstage.
    My floor is concrete with oak parquet. In the floor are water tubes for underfloor heating. Also of critical importance is isolating the speakers from the floor.
    I'm toying with the idea of getting GR Research, either as main cable or as a biwire option. For the length i need it would still be quite pricey though so i'm hanging back. I dont know what improvement if any i would see over the Kimber Crystal 24. Construction-wise I think only the cotton rope and the RAM distinguish the GRR from the Kimber. Does anyone have any experience of this comparison? All the best, Rob in Switzerland

    Interesting video Jay. They certainly improve the aesthetics. I’d consider trying this. I’d certainly not belittle your experiences as they’re yours. If you hear a difference then that’s what matters. Some cables do seem more microphonic than others and a hard floor is likely to pick up much more noise than carpeted, so there’s probably something in this.

    Its a capacitance effect between the cable and the floor. Not just the conductivity of the floor, but also whatever is the dielectric constant and other dielectric properties of the flooring material.
    Bigger diameter/surface-area-per-length cables tend to be affected more because they have greater capacitive coupling to objects in the near environment such as flooring.
    Only a relatively small increase in distance between a cable and the flooring (a few inches) drastically reduces capacitance coupling and related effects.

    If you build a few and set them up and they make a difference then you can invest in something nicer. If they don't work in your system then you aren't out anything but the 5 minutes it takes to assemble and set up. I hope this helps someone.

    I want to share my experience and I want you to just try this:
    Get a pair of 5" Tang Band or Fostex or any other good single drivers. Make a tower box and make a speaker hole near the top of the box for the single driver. Before mounting the driver put this in the speaker hole, a 5" diameter piece of tubing (poly pipe) 2" long (it's more a ring than a tube). And glue it in the speaker hole (like a short bass vent tube). Mount the single driver about 20 mm (3/4") above the speaker hole so there is an air gap between the driver and the speaker hole. Use oversize screws and use soft thin sprinkler hose for spacers (around the screws) and compress the hose a little with the screw to secure the driver. Make the acoustic gap between the driver and the box a bit smaller at the top of the driver so the driver is tipped up a little when mounted. A crossover filter is an option that I made but it's very subtle cos the acoustics does most of the EQ (but I like perfection so I have a filter). You will hear a vast difference with the semi open driver to a regular close driver mounting for sure (and in a good way, I reckon and others who heard them reckon). And you might love the difference! So please try it cos to me it's at another level! I want to share this (not repress it like innovations seem to, through copyright). I hear voices in my room that startles me cos I get tricked into thinking someone is in the room when it's in my speakers. It happened several times (lost count). I actually physically turn around when that happens. And sometimes I have to turn it down to find out if a sound is coming from outside or from the speakers. Once I heard a loud low passing jet aircraft and I looked out the window and there was no plane and I was still searching out the window while my speakers were less than a meter from me. And it took several seconds before I realised the jet was the speakers (even when they were that close to me). If this is true (and you love sound) then you would be a mug not to try it. Especially when it's about as cheap as your made cable raisers. And I get so much enjoyment and amazing emersive experience from the semi open, semi dipole speakers and I want to share this experience (not suppress it). They absolutely smoke my reference speakers (B&W 706s) with female voice, piano and brass band. I lent my speakers to an audiophile friend and I asked him 2 questions:
    Do they sound "different"?
    And he said yes.
    Did you like the difference?
    And he said yes.

      I would really like to try this. A picture would be great. You say make a 5inch hole at the top of the box. Glue in the 5inch pipe/ring and then mount the speaker 20mm above that. So the speaker does not go in ‘the speaker hole’? Sorry I may be a bit thick.

    A car analogy: cable lifters are like the faux hood scoops people used to buy at Pep Boys and stick on the hoods of their cars. Fact: they did NOT improve performance. Also fact: some people liked the way they looked. Some other people pointed fingers and poked fun, but the folks with the fake scoops didn't care; they were doing what made them happy. The fake scoop folks knew it was all just for looks; they didn't make up reasons for how the scoops magically improved engine performance. And the scoop companies didn't claim any such gains. Everyone agreed it's just for decoration, which is fine because no one was being fooled.
    But as evidenced in Jay's video and the comments here, there are all sorts of armchair theories as to how lifters offer real, audible benefits. Terms like "blind AB test" are being casually used without any real evidence for back-up. People are being misled, which is fast becoming a trend in social media and in other arenas (medicine, science, politics), and this why it's a touchy topic for some. While there's no harm in using cable lifters for decoration, pushing the idea that lifters offer actual sonic benefits is the very reason we have companies selling them for hundreds or thousands of dollars. To be clear, I'm not against cable lifters - I'm against false narratives that empower predatory markets.

    I had my son print some for me with his 3d printer but my first test was with toilet paper tubes. I can hear a difference (minor) but I can't tell you if it is better for worse... Just a little different. Results can be adjusted by how much of the cable is suspended. Also, most of your theory was around vibration but I have read it may be capacitance is the change. Some designs say you ideally need about 3" of lift. Someone should be able to measure this to validate.

    Cable lifters make a little more sense when you understand electricity flows thru magnetic fields. It could be that the cable being on the floor effects the magnetic fields, lifting the cable off the floor could make these fields more even around the diameter of the cable. This would make sense that cables with less shielding see better results with the lifters.

    Let me put a bit of science behind this. Something of a possible causal explanation. Some time ago while in audio sales I sold a line of custom cables that included cable for balanced audio use. They had the normally designed two wire with shield in a jacket. But they also had the same wires with cotton string between them in a jacket. They measured exactly the same. But especially for microphones and guitars, the bouncing of the cable on the ground was microphonic in the cable without the physical absorption from the cotton string. Demoed as simple as laying the two side by side and stomping on them through an amp. You could hear the physical vibration in the regular one. A dynamic physical change in distance between wires.
    Now exactly how much those vibrations would affect at those higher voltages at speaker level? But lower impedance. And it would be across the length of the wire. Not just the stomp point. And yes absorbed by carpet.
