Title resembles the wording of an old Irish blessing “May your glass be ever full. May the roof over your head be always strong. And may you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead” Carter Burwell drew on Irish music for Miller's Crossing theme based on a very old Irish harp tune 'Limerick's Lamentation' after the Treaty of Limerick 1691.
After PSH's death I came here to listen to this soundtrack in particular. True case of life imitating art. Great score this one. If anyone hasn't already check out 'Love Liza' from 2002 with Hoffman, another classic.
whatshisF4C3 haha! Yes, I do have a very _faint_ idea, I must admit. But I love it! And I simply loved the film itself. Ethan Hawke & Hoffman are brilliant!
Hey man! Just to let you know.. Now 2 years ago I was searching for the song of this movie... When i have found it..And it was at you..Man..It was like:Omfg! U maked me in that day the most hapiest person from this planet!...Now..when I search for this song..with confidence..I come here to listen it...Again thanks a lot for uploading this song now long time...even if only the true ppl will in the end..Appreciate this type of music.
Kaicooper87 watch Hell or High Water and stop bitching. This only came out in 2007. Amazing movies come out every month, people just don't look for them
While you're at it.. check out some korean or Japanese movies too like Confessions 2010, 9 souls, memories of murder, the wailing, silenced or the original Old Boy. And NO movies like "before the devil knows you're dead" don't come out every fucking month but they are out there.
I love this...in the movie is also some..No! Not some....THE best trumpet playing I have ever heard (my granddaddy played that instrument)... I had no idea it could sound so good. Overall, the entire soundtrack was magnificent (I like it as much as I like "The Fifth Element's" soundtrack...yes, the genre is quite different 🙂)
What on Earth are you talking about? Where's the trumpet??? I hear piano, harp, strings and percussion. Most of these are probably MIDI, by the way -- particularly the harp sounds like it was sequenced.
I know it's apostasy even bringing up something like BATMAN V SUPERMAN here, but anyone else notice how Hans Zimmer kind of, uh, "borrowed" 0:14-0:50 for the opening titles
Floppy188. Couldn't agree more. When actors express their intimate suffering on screen, this leads to psychodrama and the risks of depression and suicide are high. Another famous psychodrama case was the part of Marilyn Monroe in " The Misfits ". Her husband who'd written the script made her act her anger and deepest fears on screen. The shooting turned out to be a disaster and Marilyn died 1 year after. When there is not enough distance between the persona and the person, it can be dangerous. I only discovered " Before the Devil " once Philip died and I was indeed very shocked by the scene during which he takes drugs because that's the way they found his corpse. Far too young to go. RIP, Philip.
I know it’s 8 years too late. But I read on Carter Burwell’s website that it was not released commercially because of the union orchestra and it would cost too much to make a soundtrack. I was so bummed to find this out.
Does anyone know why director and composer would choose a main theme so deliberately boring? If one compares this to "Presumed Innocent", which is equally obsessive music for another crime drama, we see Williams remains intriguing even with that amount of repetition. But in this film a theme that was designed to sound more mundane than a street corner is repeated in a boring, trivial way. I don't like it, to tell you the truth -- and the one thing I can say to mitigate this judgment is that the whole soundtrack was composed and produced in 3 weeks (replacing another soundtrack), which itself is a tremendous workflow error, in spite of most Hollywood composers bragging about their "heroism" in accepting such self-sabotage. The film is great in spite of the music, which helps it none.
Can't believe this score was never released on CD...absolutely haunting stuff. Outstanding movie too.
Amazing film and amazing soundtrack. R.I.P. Sidney Lumet and Philip Seymour Hoffman
R.I.P Albert Finney
I could listen to the first minute on a loop for hours. Beautiful

I thought maybe metalica - at first... its wonderful!
This song can be considered a work of art. Underrated and unbelievable to think it was never officially released...
- from Brazil.
That intro is soooo good. Strange it was never released officially.
Here’s that brilliant intro with some live drums ✌🏻🤩

@@flowerlandofjohn Interesting take on that tune lol. Should try a metal version with guitars if you are gonna add drums like that.
@@kibblz Nah, I’m not a huge metal-fan. This is more of a fusion-thing for me ✌🏻🤩
Like this (for comparison):

This music gives me a panic attack every time I hear it, yet I can't stop listening to it....
My father died one morning in front of me by a heart attack and I was just listening to that music on headphones. ..
+1
