People this just a rehearsal !!! Everybody is talking about 3:31 as if it was a mistake , Callas just did a high B pianissimo with fully supported that's why it sounded so that can happen. Then you hear her taking a higher note ( high C) in 3:51 more clearly because there she opened more the sound . A great singer like Callas even in rehearsal will do some economy of the sound supported with always a strong Technic she always sang with full voice ! Thank you for posting this is just wonderful !
Exactly! These haters need to get a life. Unless you can do what she could do and have done what she did they need to have several seats and be silenced by the awe this woman deserves. Period.

I saw her in the 70's in concert in Philadelphia. I had never heard her live. I had read so many negative reviews of her later performances, so I was shocked to experience a voice of unexpected warmth able to be nearly as expressive as her earlier assumptions.
I love her voice in this recording session. 3:31 sounded fine to me...and that high C and that downward plunge was VERY impressive. This was CALLAS - and we would be so lucky to have ANYONE today even HALF as good.
@Emil Poulain lol I just replied to your comment on another video also about Zinka, but there she was being Nasty towards Callas, and here you are saying she loved Callas lol And Medea was a role that fitted Callas voice perfectly to a point she had success with it even when her voice was gone in the 60's.
@Emil Poulain In any terms to be honest! I dont think these singers actually listened to Callas like we do today. Meaning we have acess to all of these pirated recordings of live performances and we can witness a level of singing that is unrepeated in history. Had they listened to Callas' Armida, Abigaile, Leonora, Medea and etc, the live recordings, not the studio ones, im sure they would be floored by it just like we are.
It wasn't a so call decline,the voice became problematic to the point that she stopped singing in public. Nobody knows the reason why exactly.....but at the end of the day it doesn't matter...she remains La Divina nearly 45 years after her passing.

Perfido!), proved the instrument was ample, so much of Voice, IS psychological, and if one’s heart is broken, the voice is. My Bel Canto teacher, in the lineage of Tetrazzini, warned me of this, and i did not listen.
That's it. After her prime, in a rehearsal, with occasional flaws, she manages to sing this aria infinitely better than all other sopranos. The pathos is simply incomparable! She's always so professorial... What a miracle she was! Beyond any explanations!

So moving interpretation,in such a healthier state than the ones that have been releashed from1969! Maria Callas even in the most difficult of her vocal days,managed to bring music to life in her own majestic way.
I think you brought up a critical point regarding the states of her voice and how people were quick to judge her as a has been. So she had good days and not so good days just like anyone else except that she was a perfectionist and for that reason she kept training but slowed down her career.
We can hear that much of the "problem" with the voice was her stage fright [not in play here as this is private rehearsal] and her always stated concern that she would not be able to please her audience, although my guess is most of us would not have cared because just seeing her perform [I saw her in Chicago on the last tour] was a greater artistic experience than hearing almost any other opera singer in his/her prime. The voice did become more difficult for her to manage [as can be heard here and could be seen in that last tour experience]. However, her absolute knowledge of singing technique and her still complete ability to "become the character" both vocally and visually [even when dressed in a plain white gown] never faded and so the artistic experience for the audience was still phenomenal.

Oh my god. Fantastic music, shes in better voice than she was 10 years earlier, but by far the best part of this is hearing maria laugh. It feels like the first time ive heard the person behind the voice, joking and being herself. Im used to only hearing her either emersed in a tragic role, or putting on a facade in front of an interviewer.

People said her voice was declining...???!!!! she's still beautiful......the public in Paris where she died in 1977 however has always been enthusiastic about her and even when she sang Norma in 1964 nobody ever had the bad idea to critize her.

What was she rehearsing for? To my knowledge she never performed or did a commercial recording in 1969. Or was it maybe a rehearsal for a recording that was never released? Either way, she sounded awesome in 69! She should have done her "comeback" then, instead of '74. Oh well. La Divina lives on in her recordings, and in our hearts and memories.

It's nice to be able to enjoy this perfomance of Callas, even with the painful 3:31 moment in this recording. Again, is truly remarcable that we all can look pass the mistakes to enjoy the beauty. Because of that, i BELIEVE we should do that with other females singers, instead of trashing them and try to discredit them. It would be so sad and painful to watch a compilation of all the Callas wobbling high notes, and mistakes, displayed online to other people for mockery.

There is something I do not understand, here. Her voice seems in very good shape, despite some inevitable flaws. How come that, at the start of the world tour with Di Stefano, a few years later, she was in such a sorry condition, at least at the beginning? Did she stop rehearsing altogether? I know that, at least in 1972, she was still practicing. Anybody?
I think it were 2 things that put her voice on or off...the 1st was her nerves and the 2nd was the practicing!!! Her steady improvement from the beggening of the tour in 1973 until her last recorded frames in 1977, proves that practicing improved her voice a lot!! Also when she felt relaxed (for example the Boston 1974 recital , where she sang alone) her voice really sounds great!! Also dont forget that women around her age (45-50) have eminopause...that s changing a lot the quality of the voice!!

I would only add that had she continued her work with de Hildago rather than move on to diversionary work after 69, she would have gotten back her voice and confidence sooner. In addition, di Stefano gave her terrible vocal advice in preparation for their tour, according to Robert Sutherland.
In 1969 she was studying with de Hidalgo, then she took technical advice from her friend Pippo (!!!). Here is the difference. Read Robert Sutherland's book: "Apri la gola ! " di Stefano would tell her always.
Looking at interviews and listening to her during her last years it is apparent to me, because of my personal experience with anxiety medication and sleeping pills, that she was under the influence, or recovering from the influence, of pills. They wreak havoc on your voice, muscles, spirit, etc,.. wWhen you’re trying to put the fire of depression/anxiety/grief out, it’s difficult to think/care about the long term effects of your “treatment”. Nothing but love and the utmost respect and awe for her vocal artistry and mastery.
Self-confidence was what Maria Callas lacked in latter half of her career. She should have been more confident and her fans should have continued to encourage her. It is a real pity that such a diva as Maria Callas died as a recluse in an apartment in Paris. At the same time, I curse Aristotle Onassis for ruining her career and her life. She should have known better.

At 3'51, it's even a C sharp, and she descends down to F sharp ( two octaves and a fifth) with a perfect chromatic scale.

There is something I do not understand, here. Her voice seems in very good shape, despite some inevitable flaws. How come that, at the start of the world tour with Di Stefano, a few years later, she was in such a sorry condition, at least at the beginning? Did she stop rehearsing altogether? I know that, at least in 1972, she was still practicing. Anybody?
I think it were 2 things that put her voice on or off...the 1st was her nerves and the 2nd was the practicing!!! Her steady improvement from the beggening of the tour in 1973 until her last recorded frames in 1977, proves that practicing improved her voice a lot!! Also when she felt relaxed (for example the Boston 1974 recital , where she sang alone) her voice really sounds great!! Also dont forget that women around her age (45-50) have eminopause...that s changing a lot the quality of the voice!!

I would only add that had she continued her work with de Hildago rather than move on to diversionary work after 69, she would have gotten back her voice and confidence sooner. In addition, di Stefano gave her terrible vocal advice in preparation for their tour, according to Robert Sutherland.
In 1969 she was studying with de Hidalgo, then she took technical advice from her friend Pippo (!!!). Here is the difference. Read Robert Sutherland's book: "Apri la gola ! " di Stefano would tell her always.
Looking at interviews and listening to her during her last years it is apparent to me, because of my personal experience with anxiety medication and sleeping pills, that she was under the influence, or recovering from the influence, of pills. They wreak havoc on your voice, muscles, spirit, etc,.. wWhen you’re trying to put the fire of depression/anxiety/grief out, it’s difficult to think/care about the long term effects of your “treatment”. Nothing but love and the utmost respect and awe for her vocal artistry and mastery.
