  • Yes, I know. 200 gallons is over 1600 pounds of water. The rear axle is rated for 24k pounds.
    Jim and I get to work on the water storage of the bus. More will come later, probably around 65 gallons, in the underbay storage Wess and I will do sometime in the future. Thanks for watching everyone!
    Here is some bonus material of Jim & I discussing the water system plan - • Talking over water tan...

    Chris, I hate to tell you this, but you're overloading your bus with all that weight! You can trust me on this, I'm a certified professional internet keyboard expert. If you and Jim have any more questions on what you're doing wrong, I'll be glad to help. You're welcome.

    I agree that the weight is fine. the problem is the location - that much weight behind the rear axles can make the bus squirmy on the road. For a directional stability you want the weight as far forward as possible (yes I am an engineer). In addition, that much water sloshing around when the tank is half full could be "interesting". How has this worked out for you?

  • @JohnS-zq8ks
    @JohnS-zq8ks 6 років тому +20

    I'm guessing with the floor piping, water heater, etc.; you got 215 gallons x 8.34 or 1,793, say 1,800 pounds of water. Hope that tank has a dam in the middle to keep the water from sloshing back and forth or corners. It's hard work Chris, but it's coming along. Good work.

    • @writertaylorleecooper9357
      @writertaylorleecooper9357 6 років тому +1

      This looks very accurate to me, and I agree: 1800 pounds is simply NOT a problem. The worst sloshing would be if and when both tanks were half empty, so you'd have 900 pounds of water trying to get your attention. The thing is, that is only possible if you can whip that bus around like a small van. You MIGHT feel it when making 90 degree turns in town, but I'm just not sure how much effect 900 pounds can have on a 15 ton vehicle.

    • @mccainjay
      @mccainjay 6 років тому +3

      The slosh is called surge when moving forward and rearward. I hope they put in a crossover to self level the water from tank to tank, and to minimize 900 pounds more on one side than the other.

    • @georgezgreek
      @georgezgreek 6 років тому +2

      Your referring to baffles, yeah I agree ! maybe have the tanks independent from one another, so if you do run into problems you can always drain one or the other, don't know I am not experienced with this kind of stuff but sound like allot of weight and my concern would be if those tanks were half full that water sloshing around can cause some serious balance and stability issues , best of luck I hope it works out, worst scenario you're removing one tank and you can use that extra space for storage .

    • @freerage
      @freerage Рік тому

      I drive a water truck for a living they won't notice 200 gallons sloshing around...

  • @ThrottleStopRacing
    @ThrottleStopRacing 6 років тому +8

    I like the idea of 200 gallon storage. Are there baffles inside the tanks. Haven driven smooth bore milk tankers, liquid sloshing around forward and backward and side to side is no joke. Only concern about weight is the concentration of the weight behind the axle. The bus certainly has the carrying capacity.

  • @tmr3513
    @tmr3513 5 років тому +2

    Think about how much the passengers weighted who sat there with the seats installed. Well over a couple of tons. My only concern is are the tanks baffled to keep the water from sloshing back and forth when moving?

    So about 1/2 of the radiant floor heating is under the water tanks and batteries and about 15 inches below the floor you'll be walking on .... not real sure you'll get much inside heating from that ! And looking for how you'll hook a water heater the flooring ?

  • @Shootgreedofirst
    @Shootgreedofirst 6 років тому +8

    Also it’s less about your axle holding 1600 lbs - that’s easy enough. But put some empty space in that tank and then jam on the brakes... When that weight has a bunch of momentum it doesn’t want to stop. Baffles in the tank help, but it’s still a scary amount of force.

    • @rockyalvarez520
      @rockyalvarez520 6 років тому +5

      If you want 200 gallons I would just mount multiple smaller tanks. Then just mergethem into main line with reserve switches this way the slosh factor jas a much smaller foot print since you will only be draininh pne small tank at a time.

  • @davidspensberger7862
    @davidspensberger7862 6 років тому +1

    don't worry about weight. only fill tanks completely when you go camp for extended times. no reason to carry excess weight around mountains and such. helps with fuel economy

  • @jos6216
    @jos6216 6 років тому +2

    I also HIGHLY suggest that you put Felt Paper on the bottom and sides where the tanks sit. That will help prevent the tanks from a hole being rubbed into a tank. You for sure want to make it where you can get the tanks out if a hole or crack does happen. Have seen it many times. Put in LOTS of Tanks. They can crack and holes come.

    Hi Chris! Love your channel! We're in the midst of building out our skoolie and have chosen to go with two 100 gallon water tanks as well. One of the the contractors helping with the build is insisting we need baffles and/or that the weight is a huge issue. While we're 90% confident it will all work out, we figured we'd ask you about it. Now that you have the tanks in and are driving around with them, have you noticed any negative side effects from the water slosh?

    Nice quantity of water, I would appreciate as much as my chassis would bear too.. 1668 pounds fresh water NICE, Just equivalent to (17) *100 pound kids on a bus built for 72 people... I'm sure your bus can handle it. Black and Grey would have to be similar volume but one should always be empty when the other is full.. Great luxury to be able to carry that much water.. Not to mention the thermal mass that you are adding to store heat or cool energy .

I know that after a couple of weeks the water in my tank get's a little stale so I drain, flush and refill my fresh tank regularly. When I am off grid I rarely run out of fresh water...my grey tank capacity is my limiting factor and in more and more places BLM is restricting dumping grey water.

    200 Gallons (be aware U$A uses a "SMALL" Gallon (Smaller than the rest of the Planet)).
    200 Gallons 757.082357 litres,
    so approx 3/4 tonne (metric ton) of water
    and plus the weight of the plastic tanks.
    200 Gallons = about 240 U$ Gallons.
    If your tanks are "un-baffeled" you may need to travel with them completely FULL (or completely EMPTY).
    estimated 800 kg (metric) = approx. 0.882 (in US "small" tons) = approx. 1764 pounds .

      Thank you. I think people forget that these are buses. They are not motor homes.

      That and also the dry weight of them are relatively light so there's plenty of capacity. I used to drive HD wreckers and towed many buses. A full size school bus weighs roughly 7~8 tons (16,000lbs) with a GVW of up to 36,200lbs, so you have approx 10tons to play with. Now I drive a gasoline tanker and that 200 gal of water, you'll never feel it. You have the worst surge when a tank is half full, so 100 gal. Your tanks shape will decrease surge as well.

    All of this wasted time, money and energy... Chris do you ever think about all of the wood being layed into G while your away playing hippy?

      All I can think about is how sad someone's life has to be to leave anonymous negative comments on UA-cam. I hope you can find some happiness.

      Also... I am pretty certain I am David Moon so hiding behind anonymity is not my thing.

      Alcohol and computer commenting are a deadly mix...
