Great lesson in history, respect, and celebrating the workers and artists of Chicago. Great story WGN team!

Lovely interview! I drove by that building for many, many years. I'm so glad they saved it & was able to repurpose this iconic building. Looking forward to getting this book!

Someone needs to come out to Valparaiso to see how Journeyman Distillery transformed the old Anco Windshield wiper plant into its newest location. Absolutely beautiful. It's great to see old buildings come back alive and keep a part of their history as well.

My dad was an “Ad Man”. He commuted daily on the train to Chicago to get to work since it was less expensive for his big family in the suburbs. He was an avid reader and used the commute to read books, Tribune and Advertising Age, the monthly trade magazine. My dad was a “creative”. He dreamed of being an architect but ended up loving his career as an “adman” as he could tap into his artistic side. He worked at Morton Salt from 1952- to 1966 as a marketing manager. He created a package design for Safe-T-Salt, the yellow and black diagonal stripes still used today. He also had the idea to put the Morton Salt name and ionic Morton Salt girl logo on the roof of the Elston salt warehouse facing the Kennedy expressway. Over the years, I could never drive past without a smile or tear. He told us how one year after he left Morton Salt, he saw they repainted the logo, which looked off. He called the corporate office and told them to fix it! I also appreciated seeing some of his magazine ads on the Mad Men (television series) set as posters in the offices. Now that the “Salt Shed” has been designated a historical property, his idea will be part of Chicago for a long time. He would have been very proud of this, as using a logo in a way to give an anchor to a community would be one achievement few “Mad Men” ever see. Thomas J. O’Dea 1926-1984.
