    I was there in 1976 - we took a very small boat across. I thought we’d arrived in paradise. The water was turquoise, fresh and clear. We hired bicycles and cycled from one end to the other. The garden was then The Horlick’s Garden and we were alone. I like the look of the new campsite. Gigha is referred to as God’s Island. What a fantastic place.

      I think in 1976 there were 12 dairy farms, with about twenty cows each, and a creamery.

    Love Gigha, I’m lucky to have family living on the island ❤ we got married on one of the wee beaches off from the north twin beach. The home bakery made our wedding cake and we always get some goodies when we visit. My mother in-law has a wee honesty box for her crochet crafts on the way up from the ferry 🖤 back on Gigha in 2 weeks 🖤

      It’s such a special place. If you ever find yourself going back have a look for my father in laws books Discover the Isle of Gigha and A portrait of Gigha by Keith Wilson. Ano I’m slightly biased but his books are great there’s also another Keith Wilson on the island who I believe has an older book with maps of Gigha through time.

    Just picked a jar of blackberries and a jar of nettle seeds two days ago (giving thanks to the plants themselves whilst doing it) they were both quite wonderful and are very healthy.
    Nettles are so underrated and misrepresented in our society look up what they do for us Ruth it's pretty amazing really. 🌿💚

    • @ruthaisling
      @ruthaisling  Рік тому +1

      I love that! I’m so interested in growing my own veg and herbs and foraging. I really wanted to do more of if this year but the van travel and creating videos has ended up being what I’ve spent a lot of time on. Definitely in the future 🙏

    • @zeropointconsciousness
      @zeropointconsciousness Рік тому

      @@ruthaisling Nettles and Blackberries are some of the easiest to forage as they're so abundant and recognisable Sis' this is only my second year gathering Nettle seeds and it's so easy I actually fill a jar of them quicker than I do the Blackberries and OMG! I flipping adore them they've had a really noticeable effect on my vitality or something and that is actually what they are known for.
      It's like they put a spring in my step...that's what it feels like.
      They taste nice too I hope you're as amazed by them as I am when you do try them.
      Don't forage anything next to any roads though because the plants just like trees are cleaning the air of car emmissions for us so they might be a wee bit toxic.
      You'll get the hang of it and all the info we need is online anyway.
      Good luck Ruth and I really love your posts too.

    In USA tablet is called fudge. I live in Tennessee near the Great Smokey Mountains. The fudge in the shops in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge is very popular and sweet as well. I will never be able to explore as you do, but I can enjoy it through you! Thanks so much for your informative and pleasant videos. You are so enjoyable to watch.

      I’m really glad you’re enjoying the videos, thank you for watching! 🙂 Actually tablet is very similar to fudge and made in a similar way, the only difference is the texture of the end result. Tablet is a lot more sugary and crumbly, rather than smooth like fudge.

Seeing these islands through your eyes has been lovely. If I have another chance to visit Scotland, this will be a definite destination! Another bonnie adventure on this beautiful Island of Gigha! The scenery & views are stunning, along with the lovely beach & the fascinating Fisherman's Cave, with all the names carved in the rocks from way back, many years ago. Also, the choice of seafood in that wee hut there was amazing & that halibut bagel you had for lunch looked delicious! Along with the cute wee Ice Cream Parlor, with the home made Ice Cream & in such unique Flavors. As well as, the wee honesty box filled with baked goods.What a treat that would be! Only in Scotland! Aye lass!
    I was also really happy to see you eating your porridge there! No doubt trying to keep up with auld John Taylor from Lead Hills Village! Well good for you! Perhaps you'll make it to 137 years yourself now lass. LOL. I'm also glad to see that there were no spiders in your porridge hiding in the blackberries though.Very tickly going down I would imagine! Let's hope old John didn't have any spiders in his either! Although, maybe that was his real secret of living such a long life! LOL
    .I also really loved the South part of the Island, especially the lovely Achamore Gardens.They are just so lush & beautiful, with such pretty flowers, exotic plants, foliage, trees, the cool bamboo maze and... lots of bumble bees. All this, along with such an interesting history as well. It looks very peaceful there & it would be such a joy to just walk around the gardens & take in the beauty all around you.Then to top it all off, there is that amazing view! Stunning! Finally, there's the Boathouse & that delicious looking Seafood Curry dinner that you had. My mouth was watering just watching you eat it. Yum! Wow! There's no doubt about it, this is a beautiful Island! The people who live & own land or homes on this lovely Island of Gigha are truly blessed! Thank you for sharing this delightful experience!

    Excellent video Ruth, I'm glad you had good weather for your trip, I've been to Gigha over a dozen times and the weather has always been good, it can be dry when the nearby mainland is wet from the rain! Your trip reminds me that I need to visit for leisure and not just for work. A tip for travellers to Gigha, on weekdays the first ferry over can be very busy with contractors, so it's best avoided. Your holiday isn't as vital to the island as someone waiting for a tradesman to call! 👍

    I’ve slowly worked my way through most of your vlogs, I’m planning my Scotland tour 2025. The usual NC500 tour just wasn’t attractive to me. There are places I’ve earmarked but your descriptions of your travels have certainly pointed me in the direction that I will be exploring. Thanks Ruth, I close my eyes and I’m nearly there.

    I lived on Islay for 12 years and the ferries from Kennacraig to Islay used to stop at Gigha. I never got to go though, shame 😢

    You made me chuckle when you said you don't like marmalade. I used to get teased mercilessly as a child if there was anything with marmalade or dried fruit, because I'd always say "but I dinnae like the peels!" 😠😂
    There's a reason you remove it from fruit, and it's not too eat it!
    That bramble and peat sounds lovely though.
    Oh, and tablet... 😋😋😋

    Charged as a car ! Nice one, usually per metre with a van. You scored. I do note your red van is a perfect size for the smaller ferries.

    • @ruthaisling

      Sometimes charged as a car and sometimes as a motorhome, I guess it maybe depends on the person working or the ferry company / route!
