About the Jon ending. The constant theme of GoT is that every season people crave that elusive comeuppance, every season the carrot gets dangled and then right at the last moment it all gets taken away brutally. The vile characters remain on top and you're left bitterly disappointed by a subversive ending. GoT season enders are like crack, you keep coming back for more emotional abuse. Then comes Tyrion's "ray of hope ending" last season and you think maybe this is the big turnaround. But then they drop this massive shoe right in the middle of the series. Jon's betrayal and death (for slightly different reasons) is where GRRM left off the Night's Watch saga in his last book. When this episode aired it made an ungodly amount of noise, it really was one of those viral TV moments of the 2010s. Everyone and their mother was talking about it. President Obama asked director David Nutter if Jon is really dead, that's how much of a pop culture phenomenon Jon Snow had become. This is definitely a downer ending for the ages but one thing's for sure, they got all the attention they wanted and some more. So Season 5 leaves us with all the main characters hitting rock bottom. But at some point there has to be some payoff, right? What if it's in the next one? Well it's GoT, they're probably just gonna hit you over the head with more frustration and sadness. But you'll have to find out...

These last few episodes had a lot of dark moments but that Arya killing Meryn Trant scene was particularly dark. It's probably the most graphic way someone's been murdered in the show. For some reason it feels way more repulsive than swords going through people's heads. Probably because of the ambience and the tone of that scene, feels horrifying. Cersei's atonement too. It's a tough watch. There's a passage in the book where Uncle Kevan is wondering how Tywin had done the same thing to his father's 2nd wife, and what the Golden Lion would've felt knowing his daughter was being herded through the streets like a common prostitute. House Lannister took a fall from grace this season, but then again who didn't?

A Dance with Dragons - Jon XIII ( For the Watch )
..............A horn, I need a horn. He saw the glint of steel, turned toward it. "No blades!" he screamed. "Wick, put that knife …"
… away, he meant to say. When Wick Whittlestick slashed at his throat, the word turned into a grunt. Jon twisted from the knife, just enough so it barely grazed his skin. He cut me. When he put his hand to the side of his neck, blood welled between his fingers. "Why?"
"For the Watch." Wick slashed at him again. This time Jon caught his wrist and bent his arm back until he dropped the dagger. The gangling steward backed away, his hands upraised as if to say, Not me, it was not me. Men were screaming. Jon reached for Longclaw, but his fingers had grown stiff and clumsy. Somehow he could not seem to get the sword free of its scabbard.
Then Bowen Marsh stood there before him, tears running down his cheeks. "For the Watch." He punched Jon in the belly. When he pulled his hand away, the dagger stayed where he had buried it.
Jon fell to his knees. He found the dagger's hilt and wrenched it free. In the cold night air the wound was smoking. "Ghost," he whispered. Pain washed over him. Stick them with the pointy end. When the third dagger took him between the shoulder blades, he gave a grunt and fell face-first into the snow. He never felt the fourth knife. Only the cold …

Fun fact: This is essentially how the last book currently ends. With Daenerys being taken by the Dothraki, Cersei's atonement, and Jon's death.
The only thing they speed up or change was Stannis attacking Winterfell, which he still hasn't done. And Sansa escaping Winterfell. In Book 4, she's with Littlefinger still learning to be a player in the game.

Haha this was one of the biggest blueballing ass cliffhanger I can ever think of! Everyone was fuckin talking about Jon. This is really when Jon Snow started to become that Anakin Skywalker type iconic pop culture figure. I was never a member of the Stannis fan club, so I was nowhere near as down on the ending as some make it out to be. This season as a whole has some of my absolute favorite moments! and I think the ending's deliberately misunderstood by the portion of the fandom who always had an an axe to grind over every little thing. Most of it is backlash to eight I guess. After eight, everything they ever did had to be re-critiqued. But when these seasons were airing in real time, the show had an incredible scale of interest. It was the 'it' show, the topic of water cooler talk. Countless people would not have been so emotionally invested in it for so long otherwise.

I think the finale is great and makes my head spin with one bombshell after another. My overall take is that while it's not as good as the previous one, this is still a fantastic season if you can look past the incessant crying over Stannis. Which isn't hard to believe when you see just how popular and successful GoT was around 2015. But unfortunately this season gets the short end of the stick when the online narrative about the show became hostile in its last years.
The finale itself is great with lots of intense moments, hooks, cliffhangers and crazy ups and downs that keeps you on the edge. Those who can't stand Cersei feel frustrated that the Faith doesn't execute her. But Cersei isn't free, she's still imprisoned in the Red Keep until her trial and Tommen is under the Sparrow's thumb. It's in the Faith's interest to keep a weak king in power who they can control. It's not a ploy to "make you feel bad for Cersei". *That it doesn't feel right to enjoy the misery of a person even as despicable as Cersei due to the perverse nature of her punishment* , *is a testament to the ethical dilemma the series always puts you in* . Besides Dorne I like most of it. The season's great for Hardhome alone. The North feels dark and depressing with the snowed out bleak monochrome scenery. The filming looks straight out of an enchanting nightmare winter with the damsel in the tower and all. A spirit breaking aura hangs over the Bolton North. I never get hung up on the unresolved arcs, I'm more of a "soak in the moment" type. This is thematically the darkest season, can get emotionally exhausting. But you just have to sit back and let the story play out.

Ngl I couldn't believe the Jon death either, I refused to believe it like I can manifest him back lol, but that was everyone who didn't know it was coming. The 2nd half of the season is really draining on the mind because of how fatalistic and despondent it is. Not everyone can appreciate this style of story progression. They need a bone thrown at them, some type of silver lining, or they get exasperated. Personally I love this never ending loop of "get ready for your soul to be destroyed". The dawn doesn't mean much without the night first. All the arcs that are left open ended so you just gotta hang in there. Imagine if you had to wait a whole year for answers!! The morbidity of the show had a strange mass appeal.

Ollie, may have been pissed at the wildlings - but he was also hyped up by older people that didn't know what was coming. If those wildlings stayed behind the army of dead would have been bigger.
And, Lena Heady was preggers and didn't do the walk of shame - her body double did.

  • @obdiane
    @obdiane 2 роки тому +7

I love Jon, but, I don't blame Ollie for doing that. Remember, Ollie saw the Wildlings murder his parents and everyone he's ever known, plus destroy his village. Jon not only wanted the Wildling to join them but also fell in love with one of them. Most adults would see this as a betrayal. So of course, it would be even harder for a child to understand the bigger picture when adults are convincing him to believe and do something else.
Arye is also taking revenge on those who killed and betrayed her family. . So, I don't see it as different for Ollie. I just love Jon, but I can't be hypocritical about it.

You have now reached the end of the books. Before you feel sympathy for the wait the show watchers had to undergo, Jon Snow was killed in 2011. We're still waiting for the next chapter.
I see why people compare Stannis to Macbeth, but he's closer to Agamemnon. His army stranded on a remote island on their way to Troy, the Greek king is forced to sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia to the goddess Artemis so that the winds will carry his army away from the island and towards Troy. Spoilers for a 3500 year old story, but the sacrifice leads to his eventual demise, turning his best general (Achilles) against him and inciting his wife to plot his murder.

What an insane finale with so many twists and turns! Watching this is an emotional rollercoster, which I equate to having a devil and an angel on my shoulders lol. One side with the halo and wings saying there's enough messed up shit in the real world to torture myself with this😇. The other side with the tail and pitchwork saying keep going, what's there to lose😈? Quite the explosive episode from start to finish and leaves all the stories up in the air at their most vulnerable points. I like it, makes you wanna see where this goes. But then again I was never so attached to stannis or jon to be like the ones who threatened to rage quit. Great reaction. And don't worry, you're not the only one enjoying it. This is basically the reaction of most new reactors who go into it blind without any notions about all the online negativity. Remember that the Asoiaf purists who hate watch these reactions was a tiny percentage of everyone who was watching GoT back then. The casual viewers couldn't care less about what was in the books. Check the IMDB ratings, the unbelievable viewership numbers, the record breaking slew of awards, all the articles, the insane popularity during that time...and you will get a much better estimation of just how big GoT was in the later seasons than the hyper criticism of the Asoiaf purists. Everybody was watching this shit and I mean everybody. But they drove away pretty much the entire casual fanbase in the final season. The only ones who remained are the ones who've always dunked on the show and that's how the purist attitude became the dominant narrative about the later half of the show. Cause nowdays you don't wanna get clowned for saying you once liked the show and everyone love to pretend they were reading the books since 2002. But back then it was a different story when this season and the next one was winning 20 something odd Emmys combined.

5 builds & builds to something foreboding, you can almost feel the approaching calamity & then it all comes crashing down into a crescendo. Might feel disappointing but there's a beauty to this record 12 Emmy season. Even the cinematography & score is a reminder of a sinister dreary winter gloom & doom. The shots capture the hopelessness really well. But not everyone can enjoy a tense mournful buildup, they want it all instantly.I don't hate 5 as I never like Stannis (book or show) & don't share the outrage over what I consider a gunslinging cowboy western character. Stannis Da Manis cultists can self delude about him sitting on the throne but GRRM has confirmed Shireen's end was his idea & Stannis' end makes the most sense for where the Winterfell story is headed. Stannis' story is meant to be a tragedy, his downfall matches GRRM's philosophy to a tee. Ofcourse people in general get frustrated when you take away the choice of rooting for clearly defined linear sides & instead have a cycle of morally ambiguous lesser evils (Stannis or Ramsay). For me 5 has its obvious weak points but the positives (Hardhome, King's Landing) far outweigh the negatives (Dorne). Of course, the season was rated way more highly by critics than the fandom & GoT had become the most watched drama series by this point, so the overtly negative perception didn't have any impact on the general viewers. It was more a reflection of the fandom, with all their opinions becoming some incredibly bad-faith variation of "they ruined this or that" & you get browbeaten if you point out anything positive about D&D. Some criticisms are justified, but most are laughably minor inconsistencies, straight up inventing faults retroactively, complaining about why they condensed 300 page subplots, insane nitpicking over subverted expectations, & just purists overcompensating with the hive mind circle jerk at GRRM's alter to cover for their lack of analytical ability to comprehend the purpose of the storytelling. The intent of every character (like Brienne) somehow become a 4d plot to demean Stannis lol. But yeah if you were watching without a preconceived notion from the fandom negativity, you usually tend to have a different perception. The key to understanding 5 is that it's a melancholic & long setup for "the wars to come". They build everything up just to knock it all down. It's fickle, it's the "wicked game". Winterfell with its grim spectral beauty represents that perfectly. Some say it relies on shocks, but the shocks are in the books too & the buildup is what makes the shocks hit. You have to take it for what it is,a beautifully poignant pitch-black Shakesperean tragedy. Also a season with 24 nominations & 12 Emmys which is still a record I believe. No one can change that retroactively.

23:26 27:23 Mother's Mercy is one of the best episodes and best season finales of Game of Thrones. Cersei Lannister is so evil. Her Walk on Atonement was her comeuppance for framing Margaery Tyrell for adultery and having her arrested and imprisoned by the High Sparrow. She deserved to have her long golden hair cut off and have people throw food and shit on her naked body. Jon Snow's death was brutal and tragic and one of Game of Throne's darkest moments. But, Jon Snow is a idiot. By allowing the Wildlings to cross through The Wall, he was betraying The Night's Watch as it was The Night Watch's mandate to stop the Wildlings and the White Walkers from entering the Seven Kingdoms. I know he did it with the best of intentions. Jon Snow made a lot of poor, bad and dumb decisions and no wonder he doesn't know anything.

In the books I still love Stannis. Hate what he became in the show, I think he was handled poorly in some ways. As for Stannis in the books, Varys said it best: "There is no creature on earth half so terrifying as a truly just man."

@@MiguelStinson88 Stannis loved his brothers, both of them, in fact. In the end, an argument could be made that he didn't love Robert, but I still think he did. Stannis is actually a fairly emotional man, he just considers his "duty" far more important and would never let his feelings get in the way. Here's a quote from A Clash of Kings:
“Robert could piss in a cup and men would call it wine, but I offer them pure cold water and they squint in suspicion and mutter to each other about how queer it tastes.” Stannis ground his teeth. “If someone said I had magicked myself into a boar to kill Robert, likely they would believe that as well.”
“You cannot stop them talking, my liege,” Davos said, “but when you take your vengeance on your brothers’ true killers, the realm will know such tales for lies.”
Stannis only seemed to half hear him. “I have no doubt that Cersei had a hand in Robert’s death. I will have justice for him. Aye, and for Ned Stark and Jon Arryn as well.”
“And for Renly?” The words were out before Davos could stop to consider them.
For a long time the king did not speak. Then, very softly, he said, “I dream of it sometimes. Of Renly’s dying. A green tent, candles, a woman screaming. And blood.” Stannis looked down at his hands. “I was still abed when he died. Your Devan will tell you. He tried to wake me. Dawn was nigh and my lords were waiting, fretting. I should have been ahorse, armored. I knew Renly would attack at break of day. Devan says I thrashed and cried out, but what does it matter? It was a dream. I was in my tent when Renly died, and when I woke my hands were clean.”
Ser Davos Seaworth could feel his phantom fingertips start to itch. Something is wrong here, the onetime smuggler thought. Yet he nodded and said, “I see.”
“Renly offered me a peach. At our parley. Mocked me, defied me, threatened me, and offered me a peach. I thought he was drawing a blade and went for mine own. Was that his purpose, to make me show fear? Or was it one of his pointless jests? When he spoke of how sweet the peach was, did his words have some hidden meaning?” The king gave a shake of his head, like a dog shaking a rabbit to snap its neck. “Only Renly could vex me so with a piece of fruit. He brought his doom on himself with his treason, but I did love him, Davos. I know that now. I swear, I will go to my grave thinking of my brother’s peach.”
And here's a quote from A Storm of Swords about Stannis loving Robert: "Your brother was the rightful Lord of Winterfell. If he had stayed home and done his duty, instead of crowning himself and riding off to conquer the riverlands, he might be alive today. Be that as it may. You are not Robb, no more than I am Robert.”
The harsh words had blown away whatever sympathy Jon might have had for Stannis. “I loved my brother,” he said.
“And I mine. Yet they were what they were, and so are we."
Of course, there is a contradictory quote where Stannis says he never loved Robert, but I would argue that Stannis saying something in a moment of sincerity with his closest friend, Davos, matters more than Stannis saying something in front of his knights, lords, and ladies. He might wish to appear cold and unfeeling in front of them.

@@Divinemakyr Thank you for the effort, mate. :) Yeah, that's interesting. Didn't Robert say a similar thing tho? Something like "I've never loved my brothers. It's sad when a man has to admit it but it's true. You are the brother I chose, Ned."
That sibling dynamic is pretty interesting. I need to find a summary (a video or something) of the biographies of these Baratheon Brothers.

This season is the reason why the last season was not too bad for me. My expectations of it were not so good in the first place. This season started the trickling down of bad writing- Completely butchering the Dorne story line. Having a very politically important person in Jamie who cannot fight anymore do a dangerous rescue mission. Littlefinger giving up his key to the North which is Sansa. Completely trashing Stannis' character and storyline. I'm just gonna always remind myself that those are not canon since they're not in the books anyway.

How is Jon's betrayal unexpected? More like you just didn't want it to happen, but it wasn't unexpected. They've been telegraphing the plot with Ollie, Alliser, etc for a long time. Jon stubbornly executing Janos Slynt. Allisser telling Sam "you're losing all your friends now". Ollie giving him that death stare after he pleads with Jon about the wildlings who killed his parents? You can't just up and forgive the people who killed and then cooked up your parents at the drop of a dime. The Night's Watch and the Wildlings have been at war for a thousand years. Those scars don't heal easily. National/racial/ethnic hatred makes people act against their self-interest. You can see it in society today. The viewer has seen the white walkers, these people haven't.

Exactly. Jon did the right thing but technically betrayed the Night Watch. The whole time Alliser didn’t trust Jon because he thought he was a traitor and technically Alliser was right.

this ep substantially lowers the chance of getting that battle between stannis and ramsay that you were looking forward to. but mellisandre promised you an epic battle in winterfell 🤔🤔. Is the lord of light a false prophet? Kendall had her eyes turned away from the tv (as usual) and giggling about the shame meme while Bukola and Lynette were getting increasingly uncomfortable at what was transpiring on the screen. Safe to say neither of them were finding a shred of amusement in that bit. Read the room Kendall ffs. Bukola stay being the smartest of the three.

there are not many people on the show, whom i respect and admire more than Stannis, although i don't like the religious ritual burning people shit... the shireen thing was really heartbreaking, but as long as George RR Martin doesn't write it like that, i will not consider it canon.
and there are very few people on the show, whom i despise more than Ellaria Sand... she is a coward, the lowest of the low and the definition of an *insert nono word
i would spend weeks, if not months figuring out how to torture her as long and harsh as possible...

Let's look at the 4 main "shock value" things that are points of contention:
    1) Jon : The last book had Jon Snow lying dead. How else are you gonna end this season but with such a huge moment?
    2) Cersei atonement : Arguably even more gruesome in the book.
    3) Sansa : The only "shock factor" thing that doesn't happen in the book is the Sansa-Ramsay storyline, which was done to condense what was otherwise a longwinded sideplot. Ramsay violates two different women in the book and forces Theon to copulate with a corpse. That's way more gratuitous than anything in the show. The plot is done in a bold and engrossing manner and is the main hook for the next season.
    4) Shireen : Here we go. George R.R. Martin is on record saying he came up with Shireen's burning. Maybe he's gonna do fanservice and change his mind after all these years, who knows. But if it does happen, then it's going to be like this. Circumstance slowly stripping away the moral compass from your heroes. Because there are none, only the choices that make you the lesser monster. If someone really thinks George will have the Evil Red Witch sneak up behind Stannis and kill his daughter without his knowledge on some Cinderella shit, then I got a bridge to sell them. Stannis will never take the throne in the book. It makes no rational sense and is a fever dream of stans. Basically what began as a tongue in cheek meme of Stannis Da Mannis turned into a full blown "overlooked righteous hero" grievance cult. They just used Stannis' fate as a scapegoat to satisfy their confirmation bias about the show

Stannis is an absolute one-dimensional shite character in the show as well as in the book. He's a Jason Statham character in a series that takes pride in not having Jason Statham characters. Stannis quite literally represents the anti-Asoiaf, and yet he's loved so much because what the purists deep down really want is an action hero savior. There's nothing I hate more about Asoiaf fans than the stannery surrounding the "book Stannis" myth. Hate with a burning passion. The subtle hints of Stannis burning Shireen is littered all over the previous books, and it's absolutely gonna happen unless GRRM bows down to years of whiny backlash from the Stannis cult. Stannis was never a character who was designed to take Winterfell, he's the one who goes to his doom by way of zeal of duty and unyielding rigidness. He's written as a tragic antihero from the start, but all the genius experts refuse to see this obvious character psychology. Probably because they're too busy with Ramsay r**** jokes on r/freefolks. Ironic thing is that these are the cretins who think of themselves as the supreme gatekeepers and perception makers of the series. Sad. But anyway, naturally this got very favorable reviews, before all the re-written history from malicious and resentful purists. The massacre at hardhome is better than the series finale of most shits. That's why l can drink all the Stannis tears directly from the dozen emmys they won for this season. To purists it's almost as if GRRM's greatness cannot be established unless you go out of your way to shit on everything else. Some of the things they nitpick and whine about are jawdropping petty. I've seen toxic fandoms, but pettiness and sycophancy of the r/got, r/freefolks type Asoiaf purists hellbent on discrediting even all the good stuff is next level psychotic.
