It amazes me as to why the Shulman brothers wouldn't support this project. This band has treated the music of Gentle Giant with the respect that it deserves, and put a fresh face on it as well. The songs are beautifully rendered. A new generation deserves to hear this, especially since pop music is dominated by so much canned, packaged, formulaic junk.

This piece was written in the studio as an experiment. In an interview I believe Derek Shulman revealed that they basically put down a metronome track and began writing whatever came out, adding and layering as they went. He then added that he doesn’t recommend it as a way of writing music.

About 15 years ago someone said "aah you like King Crimson, Yes, Zappa, Curved Air......have you ever listened to Gentle Giant?" ... "No" says I (thinking I am probably not missing much)...What the hell was I thinking! This is seriously impressive musicianship. Complex without sounding forced. Individuals serving the composition. Magic! Keep playing lads - this music deserves to be heard.

so great. It makes me listen to the parts even closer. Funny, the thing I kind of miss the most from the original is, of all things, the reverb on the drums. Iconic reverb usage in my ancient memory banks. Not complaining, just memories of old days coming through. I listened to Three Friends LP over and over the year I went to junior college, from one speaker no less.

I listen gentle giant since i was 23 yrs old (like 7 years now), and is incredible how their music increases in substance over the years. For me, this is the main characteristic of a great band. I'm not talking about their lyrics like most people could think, but about their harmony. It's sad how people of my age don't like them.
You guys not only sound amazingly like them, but also your live perform can be apreciated even more than the live performance of the band itself!
    Greetings from Brazil.

I've been waiting for something like this for 40 years. I use to play this album all the time in Crested Butte when I was working at Charlie's Bath hous in the mid 70's. Excellent performances by everyone, and a great facsimile sound. Thanks so much for reviving this classic music.

  • @chizmo7

I can see where one might see repeating bars as "redundant". I personally see that as an obvious tongue-in-cheek humorous approach to not taking oneself too seriously. GG did it all the time. Symmetry in music can get stupidly predictable and boring. Not only would they run a "riff" into the ground once in a while, but they would tweak it, make fun of it, use retards and adagios...as if to see if we are paying attention. They used subtle humor in many of their songs. Pure genius in my eyes.

I saw Giant in Rochester, and during the Freehand tour in Buffalo- great of course, but listen to this guy's voice! And the music- a little heavier, superb! Three Friends play it so perfectly, and with such soul that they sound obsessed with their love for the stuff! The Shulmans ought not to be a little uncomfortable- in fact, they should be supportive! In fact, it wouldn't hurt them to do the odd guest appearance with Three friends!
