  • Demo and review of KORG MICROKORG, part of KORG COLLECTION 4. Korg's fantastic little MICROKORG VIRTUAL ANALOG synthesizer is now available as a software plugin instrument in VST format, so you can play it standalone on your PC or load it into your DAW for music production.
The software version improves on the original hardware in many ways, that we'll describe in the video. Walkthrough of the user interface and the many features, plus lots of playing of the sounds and presets!

The Korg M1 was the world's best selling synth actually. I've never seen it disputed anywhere.
From Wikipedia "The Korg M1 was released in 1988 and manufactured until 1995, selling an estimated 250,000 units"
Wikipedia "The microKORG was released in 2002 and is still in production as of 2022, with an estimated 100,000 units sold"

MicroKORG is DSP-based synthesizer, the M1 is sample-based synthesizer (ROMpler like), so this is where numbers can be interpreted differently.

Although everything you said is true. The distinction comes in if you add "in production" - that's what the correct claim should be "the best selling synth currently in production". They've been stamping it for 20 years 😀

And even then Wikipedia is really bad on this. The M1 sold way beyond 320000 units. If you look at the variations of the Microkorg, the T1/T2/T3 are every bit as much a M1 as the variations of MicroKorg are MicroKorg as they all have the same engine en exterior design language. If you include the T's, the M1 sold over 400000.

I've heard the VA engine on the Microkorg goes back to the analog part of the Korg Prophecy (1995) and Korg Z1 (1997). So the idea here is that the VA was spun off to become the Korg MS2000 (1999), which then was miniaturised and became the Microkorg. If true that would make the underlying Microkorg engine almost 30 years old!

Great demo! I giggled with joy at the "Love Action" reference at 3:23. Strong agree regarding the need for "hover and scroll" parameter adjustment. This is one of my biggest gripes with Korg Collection software.

On a tangent: I have my fingers crossed in hopes that Korg do what they did with the Triton Extreme and put out a microKORG XL/XL+ plugin. I'd love to use my MKXL patch libraries without carrying around yet another keyboard. (I already have 2 large keyboards and a laptop at gigs; I don't have the real estate for my baby!)

This synth is the goto for a lot of Talkbox users, I almost got one a few years ago. But I ended up making a workflow using VSTs, which admittedly added some difficulty to the recording process, but offered a lot of flexibility in the sounds I could use.

Loving the Blancmange at the beginning!
Used a microkorg when in a band in mid 2000s and it really did feel very defining of the sound of the band, without just being the Somebody Told Me sound.
Pretty intrigued by this. Always felt I didn't take advantage enough of what was under the hood and didn't get into the editing much.

I remember in the mid 00’s going to a Virgin megastore in Tottenham Court Road and saw the Microkorg and at first I never thought much of it, but when I tried a couple of patches I was in awe of it!
Such a great keyboard, it was affordable and easy to use. For such a small instrument it was incredible how powerful it was.

A new Physical Microkorg sells for around £400 a used one usually priced at around £230, I'm not sure the benefits of easier DAW workflow integration is worth £125 which is the cost of this VST. £85 I think would of been a better price.

The red and black horrid skin is that of the Microkorg XL Plus Limited Edition. I believe the actual XL Plus is a different sound engine from the standard that is not a variation at all of the MS2000. I gave not got a standard microkorg but I do have
that black and red special edition and also an Ms2000 rack and they definitely do have a different sound. I think most would find the standard sound smoother and nicer than the XL Plus. I also have an original Electribe A which is supposedly the MS200 engine again but with two monophonic voices. To me that sounds different too but I would think its due to components used.

Sounded ok but horrible unreliable keys, overall plastiky build quality , flaky control knobs plus (& as you mentioned ) some important limitations. This vst fixes all that it seems. Good move by Korg. Thanks for demoing Woody! (Korg are first rate at doing emulations of their older synth- fingers crossed for Radias VST one day 😊)

Woody you really need to check out Synapse Audio's DUNE 3 VST synth. 24 VA Oscs, 8 Filters (or 16 when in dual mode) out of a choice of 31 filters several of which are analog modeled. You can have Wavetables on 16 Oscs, single sample import on 8 Oscs , 3 OP FM on 16 oscs, 2 Arps, 2 FX racks, Filter FX, Sweet Unison and Spread with several mode choices and most important a very high quality core sound.

YES. Better than JD-Xi's and worse than MiniNova's. The microkorg XL and XL+ have slightly different feel, probably worse cos have shallower action. Having said that, once you start playing with the knobs and your mind gets busy listening, you kind of disregard the keys - it becomes more like a groove box. I have the MK1 hardware version and the VST, well worth obtaining the ULTIMATE PATCHES (just Google ultimate patches microKORG)set vol1,2,3. They knock the stock sounds out of the park; there are some instantly recognisable patches from classic New Romantic, Cybertron, and retro Synthwave tracks.
The only problem is that I cannot get the send/receive mode to work from the VST to the microKORG hardware. I am able to send sysex from another app to the hardware, as yet not able to coax the VST to do the same, even though it is supposed to do it.
