To fill it in properly, avoid any blowout there it's hot especially mig can leave a hole and induce a crack later on just good practice. Although short circuit mig is nothing but a caulk gun and weak to me. I won't use it unless I'm required to spray arc or gobular is much better, need prep to get a strong root with short circuit and multi pass but everything has its place. Short circuit on thick plate is begging for failure.

Cleaned steel, spray mag, pulse to keep the heat controlled, coming a bit back is good but there's better technique for that. (read till end) This video IS really good to teach young generation.👏 Later when more experienced just leave the back and forth motion behind. (It's OK to have a little back and forth, as long as it's not excessive, especialy if you don't have a machine that has pulse, it helps new guys to avoid undercut and it helps to keep constant travel speed.) But do it with smooth continuous speed 😎 robot style.
What I like to suggest for terminating the weld is: Just before it completely cools (still red hot but not white glow) put a tack into that end to ensure the shrinkage crater is fully closed. And it looks absolutely beautiful.
Thats how I teach it to new guys in the shop.
Quality over quantity workshops do it like this. Well done. 🎉

I never understand why some MIG welders are always going back and forth?! This is not the correct technique for welding because of the risk of side wall lack of fusion. Additionally you should check also the macro.
A uniform nice straight move is the best welding technique for a smoot weld and penetration. Moreover, you easily can identify weaknesses on the top of the weld. The back forth welding technique is hiding the mistakes and a lower quality.

No need to lick the pool back and forth, your pulling impurities into your weld plus you'll be fluctuating your power output. Keep it smooth and straight with a constant forward speed.
Put a bigger tack at the end of your pass a run into it and round the corner, this will illuminate the crater without need to spot or pull back.

it all depends on the wire thickness and heat. i weld at great dane and make walmart trailers we have to do a little whip motion or else you blow right through because we use 0.45 hardwire at like 600 wire speed, when you start that arc it literally punches the work piece. but you're correct for most applications

He just said -- No penetration and walked off. At that point .. I Got It , just haven’t tried again ! I just ordered a little mig hopefully I can start fixing all the parts I break drag racing mini bikes! I’ll post in a week ! ✌️

Being a welder as well in my career ironworking shipyards shop welding and now robotics. Wish I could’ve gone to school and learned robotics as welders unless you have someone or someone are in the union. I’m not Welding for 1820 bucks an hour that is stupid. Makes what I’ve gone through in my career of Welding Obsolete just knowing the fact that anyone can try to do this. You can, but…. When everyone else is running away from the fire, (you guys know who you are.) we are the ones running towards it to put it out. It’s a good weld but for a root you need penetration. Unless the video was sped up there definitely was not any

I recently picked up MIG welding again after 30 years. I'm trying to weld up this really thin Rusty square tubing and it's giving me a real hard time. I don't know if it's me or the welder or the metal. I either can't get it to penetrate or I end up blowing holes in it. 🤷

From what I’m learning at a technical school you shouldn’t do step on the mig process, shouldn’t be stacking material on your puddle. I could be wrong though

You push mig fella if anyone knows what there doing then they wouldnt need to weave the torch around . A few on here saying depends on the application. Biggest load of shit I’ve ever heard. Set the machine up right and you wouldn’t need to do that 👍

Only critique I can think of is snipping the old wire before you start a new weld it makes the startup easier and reduces risk of indications on startup, oh and cleaning the metal there was some soot left from the tacks.
