The Doors were one of the most short-lived yet impactful bands of the 20th century
adonai yah 1966 to 1970 or something. Insaneeeeee
Well said my friend
Along w Hendrix and nirvana
And Joy Division, The Smiths, MC5, Nirvana. Massively influential but not around long enough to become shit. I mean, look at U2.
Every album so radically different, yet great. How many other bands can claim that.
Who needs a bassist when you have Ray Manzareks left hand?
adonai yah they had bassist in the studio and Jim and ray were planning in getting a player right after la woman and we’re gonna get one but sadly Jim passed away and never got to perform any song from la woman live
elvis's bass player jerry scheff played bass on this tune and on the la woman album. on this song he played exactly what ray was playing on his left hand.
@@nicheronnie3860 I knew they had a bassist for this particular session
FWIW, I believe that Manzarek actually played the bass parts using the pedals on his organ instead of the keys, which makes the fact that both hands were occupied on his trademark melodies while at the same time playing the bass parts with his feet all the more remarkable.
@@Gunners_Mate_Guns i thought ray only played bass on the pedals early on and then later switched ... 'could be wrong.
Manzarek is seriously so underrated for all he contributed to rock and especially burgeoning post punk
Ghonosyphlaids This.
I think hes considered one of the greatest key players of all time, especially in rock idk if I'd say underrated
@@notrenbanney2450 Except key players typically get even less recognition than bass players unless they're also the singer. Ian Stewart even got kicked out of the band he started (Rolling Stones)
Yes, Ray produced seminal L.A. punk band X, and did a great job. They even covered a Doors song (Soul Kitchen) on that first album.
@@Ghonosyphlaids there are not many key players in rock. Mostly 80s synth
This was great, it would be awesome if you did a video on The End
elguitarronista I want this so much
all of the children are insane... The End has incest, murder, and everything in between.... the west is the best!
and to think several of the verses of The End, were 'ad-libbed' by Jim during a performance while he was tripping on Acid and before it was ever recorded!
Please!! We love The Doors
Ride the snake
The doors have to be the coolest band ever.
And very dark and depressing. They were very refreshing for my 13 year old self who had overdosed on far too much upbeat and saccharine pop music like Abba and The Spice Girls.
The Colorization Channel ABBA is great
@@brendanmccabe8373 I personally don't like them because their songs are far too saccharine sounding for my taste
Amen!!
@@FrennisDaemon Please don't start an argument about this... I guess I can't stand them because of the fact that even their most serious songs like The Winner takes it all aren't taken as seriously and the fact that they are constantly overplayed on the radio constantly makes me frustrated
I've listened to the Doors since i was a kid and have never noticed the whisper track, i always thought i was just a ton of reverb
and i have always whispered along to the song.
What whispers? I too grew up with this song but never heard that part... weird!
@@joeamartinez5842 listen to the left channel
I have probably listened to this song thousands of times and on occasion very high end audio systems and I have never noticed the whispers..blew my mind hearing it now lol
Didn't ever hear the whispers until I was tripping on acid and I heard it for the first time, cannot unhear it now.
This song used to scare the absolute f%ck out of me as a kid. Actually it still does now...
Same, even though I had no idea what the words were saying
And yet Paul Rothchild, their producer called it "cocktail music' and walked out of the session.
I wrote poetry about it
I was a preschool boy when it first aired on the radio . It made an effect on my taste in music and my philosophy of life .
Ditto dude. My dad made me listen to it when we were driving home one night. I almost lost my shit.
The Doors have always been one of the more complex and deep bands I always took the dive into! One of the most shortlived bands, but easily one of the most influential with a legacy still strong.
The Doors are quite possibly my favourite 60s Rock band alongside The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Velvet Underground because of that.
For one thing, Jim's dark imagination pretty much made the band and is the main reason why I consider them to be Metal pioneers because of how dark and morbid their music is.
@@thevfxmancolorizationvfxex4051 I absolutely agree with ye there my man. Jim Morrison is so legendary from his vocals to calm and interesting personality
@@RC32Smiths01 Absolutely!! The Doors are so much better than those lame Yardbirds
@@thevfxmancolorizationvfxex4051 Ahhh to each his own, I love and respect both the Yardbirds and The Doors. But I'll admit growing up with both bands, The Doors are so more interesting on a historical and musical front
@@TH3F4LC0Nx Ahh I can see where you are coming from, but I still believe the legacy and influence of those ideas, compositions, and lyrics are timeless and revered for it's representation of the 60s
I fucking love how subtly cryptic Morrison's lyrics were. There was so much ambiguity to them, but he never overdid it. Hyacinth House is just one great example.
Symbolism more than anything, brilliant at that . The impending doom the Dionysian undertones of the world
This song will always remind me of my childhood playing Need For Speed Underground 2, it was always the first song played and it always mesmerized me. Especially when driving around at night in the rain in game.
Oh shit that's right! Loved that game
in walks snoop dawg
The Snoop Dogg remix is actually really cool and it introduced me to The Doors 🙂
Thanks for sharing, i might just have to dig out my old Xbox and NFSU2 again. 🙂
and till this day this song introduced to me by that great game is my top three of all time

Criminally Underrated LA Band!
The Doors is Jim, Robbie, Ray & John.
The Doors is NOT Jim alone.
Peace.
I don't know who the fuck told you it was Jim alone
They have a symbiotic relationship. Jim and the band would not be famous without each other.
@@sergeantsavage4234 chill brother..peace
How tf in any way are the doors underrated?
They're widely accepted as one of the greats
@@joshuar622 well, "criminally underrated" might be a bit too much, but I'd agree that they are much less present in the mainstream media compared to other old bands like Beatles, Led Zep and so on. They could put up an auction for a crusty sock found under Lennon's bed; it'd be all over the news and sell for 21 Trillion dollar (error margin 99%). You don't have that kind of thing with the doors. You might get a 30 sec news bit on Morrison's day of death, if that.
Holy crap I've heard this song a thousand times and I was not aware of the whispering track overlayed on the vocal. As someone who still owns the Doors on original vinyl from when it was released i always considered myself a day-one fan. Although this was never one of my favorite Doors songs, this is crazy! Time to get the old headphones out and re-listen. Great video. Thanks.
It's completely evident. Impossible to miss
It happened the same thing to me! I have listened this masterpiece “Riders On The Storm” at least a hundred times, and I was SHOCKED today when I found out the whispering was included in the song
As a LA native, I can’t begin to describe how much the Doors mean to me
Especially when meeting little girls in their Hollywood bungalows.
@@MattBargain ?
@@tongpoo8985 It's a line from L.A. Woman
As a kid I used to get guitar lessons at a music school, which also formed bands and organised gigs for these bands. Riders on the Storm was the very first song I ever performed in front of an audience. Memories!
Imo ray manzarek is the best ever rock keyboardist, and that’s coming from a Led Zeppelin guy who knows John Paul Jones is a damn good keyboardist.
What about richard wright from pink floyd
@@pheunithpsychic-watertype9881 He's second.
What about jon lord from deep purple
Sydney Javier Lord above all
Don't forget Keith Emerson, Rick Wakemam and Tony Banks
Well done analysis especially linking Heidegger’s idea of throwness with ROTS lyrics.
The Doors are arguably one of the best if not the best rock band to come out of the US. Every once in a while with a little luck ingredients come together to mesh into a synergistic whole greater than the sum of its parts. One example is The Doors
Robby Kreiger is an underrated guitarist and somgwriter. John Densmore is an overlooked drummer who gave such a steady beat and texture to the Doors songs. Ray Manzarek was integral in creating the Doors atmospheric and ominous sound with his organ and keyboard playing. Jim brought everything together. The beautiful Dionysian Shaman front man who played words in the band. He is wholly underrated as a singer. He is up there with Sinatra IMAO.
The Doors basically lasted from 1966-1971 with Morrison. Think about how many songs and albums they accomplished in that time. It’s insane. Jim was misunderstood too. He might have had some demons and self-destructive behaviors but he wasn’t a smug asshole. He was a kind and gentle soul really. It sucks Jim, Jimi, Kurt and Janis were all taken from us too soon. Jim would be 77 now I believe. Wish he was still here.
RIP Ray RIP Jim and Pamela
The Doors were one of the first bands to evoke the darkness that is now commonplace in rock 'n' roll.
Riders is a great dark song by The Doors, but it isnt as dark as the Oedipal part of The End....and neither of those is as dark as singing the "breakfast where the news is read...television children fed...unborn living, living dead, bullet strikes the helmet's head" part of The Unknown Soldier. Imagine those lyrics coming out during the HEIGHT of the Summer of Love and only 3 years into the US involvement in the Vietnam War. Nothing else was that dark at that time...in an era of hippie folk songs and people copying Paul McCartneys love songs in one manner or another. The Unknown Soldier isnt just the darkest Doors song...it was the darkest song of the time.
Honestly to me the doors were greater than the Beatles, but that is my opinion. They were better musicians and lyrically to my ears they were on a level above the Liverpool band. And there are so many references to the occult with their songs,
I mean there is the ghost song
My wild love
No to touch the earth
Unknown soldier
The intro to the soft parade
Riders on the storm to name a few.
The Unknown Soldier is brilliant,
The Beatles do not have any power like the Doors.
I think the doors were one of the greatest band ever, but they were not better than the beatles
Roberto sanchez yES!!!!
There is a video on UA-cam of Ray Manzarek explaining how they made this song. It is one of my top 3 Vids on UA-cam.
Finally the Doors video i've waited for so long.
"Hold my beer" - Not To Touch The Earth
L'america
Ian Curtis & Joy Division were listening. Through no fault of its own , the song reminds one of the Manson Tate/Labianca murders. The end of the innocence.
There is a weird parallel to be made with the failure of the hippie movement and the darkness of The Doors, one of the quintessential bands of the 60s. It seems they were painfully aware of the shadows lurking under the ideals of peace and love.
@@OsKarMike1306 nice comment.
This is the end, beautiful friend.
According to the book "Squeaky"; Manson follower Lynnette Fromme was a friend of Bill Siddons, the Doors manager.
Manson and Jim Morrison were on knowing terms
One of my favorite songs of all time. Planning on having it played at my funeral, one day, in no rush..
"The End" be more dark... but "Riders..." has that lost soul quality and the impermanence of all with a violent edge.

I’m 20 and love the doors
My dad would play this song every time it rained when we’d have long drives. It still gets to me
The Doors changed my life for the better ♥️
I've listened to this song so many times and I've never noticed all the whispered lyrics
The reason why I love this channel is not necessarily the explanation of the background to the songs but why the songs work. I've always loved this song but couldn't explain why it works so well and then you give words to how I feel about a song and I love it.
*Jim Morrison was one of the very few rock lyricists who wrote some poems that could stand alone as poetry without music. It's my understanding that that is what he wanted to do in the last months of his life. If you're interested in his poetry (as opposed to his song lyrics), his work is still available.*
Anji by Davey Graham and Blues Run the Game by Jackson C Frank are two great acoustic tracks that have been covered a number of times including Simon & Garfunkel covering both. They're also both clear influences on Nick Drake.
My birthday’s tomorrow, I think my friend’s attempting suicide and there is absolutely nothing I can do about it, and suddenly I see a video essay about one of my favorite songs ever. Thank you so much for this, it’s really helping me not break down right now

Hopefully your friend is still with us! Happy belated birthday my friend.
Watching this actually gave me chills.... Really cool how you were able to capture the haunting atmosphere of this song with your visuals!
My first childhood memory of Rock 'N' Roll is this song ... still a favorite almost 50 years later ... thank you for posting ...
This song was definitely a heavy one for it to be your first rock and roll song. For me this is a memorable sound that reminds me of when I was 18 yrs old and at a crossroads in life.
I was five years old when this first aired on FM radio . Hearing this song was the beginning of the end of my childhood before I even started first grade .
Imagine riders on the storm in apocalypse now instead of the end
109reaper someone should do this
Doesn't really fit the jungle setting of Apocalypse Now.
The End is better
Apocalypse Now takes place in 1969 and Riders on the storm came out in 1971. The end came out in 1967.
I like 'Riders on the Storm' better than 'The End' (also a great song tho). But I think 'The End' definitely fits Apocalypse Now way better. The End is a song about pure madness paranoia and anger. The song gets so aggressive in the last few minutes it fits with the chaos and destruction and guerrilla warfare that took place in Vietnam. Whereas Riders on the Storm gives me this unknowing of what is to come vibe but in a calm way.
Brilliant. One of my all time favorite songs.
Jim Morrison has my favorite lyrics of all time
So beautiful and poetic but at the same time so dark and mysterious
‘Not To Touch The Earth’ is one of the Door’s most underrated songs. The keyboard bass line is so catchy. Just my two cents.
Riders on the Storm is a fitting end to Jim Morrison Rock Star
Brilliant analysis of the lyrics, musicianship, and history behind this song. Really excellent job!

Rays organ playing in this song is a masterpiece. This song is more of a ceremony than a piece of music.
I saw Ray play once at a poetry reading and he busted out riders on the storm at one point and then went off on a tangent as everyone say silent watching even the poet stopped and watched and I swear he played some shit that was like doors songs you've never heard. Thank you Polyphonic for this great analysis of one of the greatest works of art ever made

@@TH3F4LC0Nx it may be "low culture" but it captured the zeitgeist of its era and continued to inspire people from latter eras, why would it not be a great work of art? I mean maybe I was over enthusiastic to call it one of the greatest, but it certainly is a great work of art
@@a7mdxxxbohndy Hey, don't get me wrong, it's a pretty sick tune, but I'd say it probably isn't among the Doors' best. Well, actually, I'd still rank it pretty high among their work, but I still think they did better. The Crystal Ship maybe, or Break on Through just because it's catchy as hell.

This is so well done!!! Bravo at understanding the music, the band , sticking to facts perfectly!!! Do a couple more of THE DOORS!! Thank you!!!
I always put it on when I hear a storm.
Riders on the Storm was new the summer I worked in a factory that made lamps. The radio was difficult to hear over the noise of the machinery ( I operated a machine that put one screw into each lamp part and then passed it on to the next worker); it was a noisy place. The big garage type doors were behind me and always open. Whenever this song came on over the radio it was hard to tell if a summer storm was beginning or if the sound of thunder was this song on the radio. . The answer would be revealed only when Jim Morrison's voice could be heard just slightly over the sound of the machinery. Atmospheric and memorable; I can still feel this song's presence as I recall those moments.
You always choose the right song

Ray Manzarek [Man-zar-EK]
Normally I don't do that to videos, or to channel that I like, but that kind of grated in my brain like nails on a chalkboard.
I can't believe this isn't the top comment. The way I see it is he has 2 choices. Re-do the video with the right pronunciation or.....no, he only has 1 choice. If I was his parent I'd make him stand in the corner for an hour "I want you to think about what you did young man" and when that hour was up make him stand for another hour and then make him redo the video.
A sore spot on an otherwise amazing video. It's Man-zayr-ick.
He butchers at least one name in every segment. Beginning to think he does it on purpose.
Yeah, ouch. What's even crazier is that most of the Doors-related movies have at least one scene where Ray Manzarek pronounces his name VERY CLEARLY, or a character pronounces is name VERY CLEARLY, and it's not Man Zuh rack.

Brilliant stuff. Great video. Timeless song.
Such a great underrated song. Also reminds me of playing need for speed underground 2.
"Girl you gotta love your man" is surely not Jim to a girlfriend, it is clearly, immediately, a message to all women, that women and their love are the necessary ingredient for man and humanity to make their way through this world into which we have been thrown.
"The world on you depends."
People should really not try to explain poetry. But if they do, it's sad to hear theories to lead people past what has been expressed in a way that I think touches humanity in such a powerful and unambiguous moment.
i agree
You are absolutely correct my friend.😉
wildbob absolutely agree with that. Serial killers and seriously maladjusted individuals will site a lack of love nurturing and guidance from their mother. Paternal input is important as well but lacking the female aspect of unconditional love respect and support from the mother figure the individual and thus society as a whole will suffer
Kind of sucks for women if their duty is to help others survive the world, are they just meant to sort themselves out as well?
@@wilkinsmicawber2996 big agree with you, i think 'mothers turning men into serial killers' story is a total myth. vast majority of them had a long history of abuse by various people (AND ALSO HEAD INJURIES!!!) women and men are all humans, who are social creatures -- we all need each other. but it's not women's role specifically to support and uplift men. that would suck! women want to self-actualise too! men have to support and uplift each other and the women in their lives just as much!
