- An amoeba engulfing a single celled protist called chilomonas.
This video was originally filmed in 2001. Just in late 2019 I was able to capture a much better view of an amoeba feeding on several euglena with much improved camera gear - feel free to look at the new video as well - • Amoeba feeds! 2019 Ve... - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
-shivers- this is kinda creepy up close and I can't help but feel bad for whatever it ate... it struggled at first... they have no emotions so I better calm down
0:34 the protist finally realizes what's going on and freaks out, haha
The little cell went crazy for a moment. It's friend at the bottom was just standing there and watching. So cool.
Looks like Plankton won't be conquering the Bikini Bottom any time soon.
An amoeba "eats" through a process called phagocytosis, which is when its own cellular membrane engulfs another organism. The portion of the membrane that took up the other organism detaches from the outer membrane, forming a "vacuole", essentially a sac that holds the food. Enzymes then flow into the vacuole, digest the organism, and the amoeba uses the organism components for nutrients! Hope that helps!
Or as jakeMATIXoz puts it, NOM NOM NOM =)
Watching this makes me suspect they have some sort of primitive consciousness. That chilomona sure did behave exactly as if it were in a panic.
Thank you for this great video!
I have never felt bad for a single celled organism, until I saw the prey struggle for life.
Thanks for asking! Permission granted -- I'd be interested in knowing what the details of your project are and how it goes! GOOD LUCK!
That gave me a chuckle.
Cool!
Amazing!
He settles down and starts a family.
Do you think the chilomona sought Jesus when it knew it faced mortality?
This is superb endocytosis!
Owned
may i use this for my powerpoint im doing for school? :)
thank you! :)
that....was brutal
they are mostly found in water (pond or stream not tap)
the amoeba dissolves the little guy and absorbs its nutrients and contents
nice
what were them other things crawling
what is being eaten?
Not digested, the amoeba is basically a conglamerate of other protists and cells surrounded by copius amounts of cytoplasm with a membrane around it, so basically it's just assimilating the little bugger, but yeah, the guy had no idea what was happening until the cytoplasm started engulfing it.
Richard Dawkins said this would be a horrible way to die. Now I agree. lol.
Wow, quite epic... Kinda sad though, small as it may be.
0:34 Amazing how a unicellular protist actually manages to look TERRFIFIED. Makes you wonder...
What I've never understoood is why the prey can't manuever over or under the amoeba...?
That little cell is like "aw shit! how do i get outta here" half way thru
part of the crew part of the ship
would it be possible to see an amoeba with 40x magnification?
about half way through the protist realized he was being eaten. But it was too late ;D
awesome!!!! the little chilomonas got real panic :(
what is it eating
I had a dream last night that gigantic green versions of these things were all over my face. No Joke. I woke up scratching my face trying to get them off.
Nerdgasm
Hey! I remember that! That protist was kinda spicy :/
amoeba FTW
Microtubules switch much faster than nuerons.
There are about 10 million Microtubules within
each cell switching in a nano second.
For example...
The brain has around 10 Billion nuerons with
1,000 - 10,000 connections each to other nuerons.
This equals 10 to the 15th operations per second
with each nueron operating as a fundamental unit.
Unlike computer switches, nuerons are much more
complex.
Single cell paramesium can learn, find food, find mates,
has a sex life and does not have any synapses whatsoever.
@darwinsfinches You can actually pinpoint the exact moment where he goes: OH SHI-
@Random136studios no it would take around 500x magnification for a clear view
Zac OP
Amoebas Rule!!!
WOWOWOWOW
how do you actually get an amoeba, i have a microscope but i cant find anything
WHOOOOOOOA!
Gruesome death. Reminds me of the Blob,somehow. Don´t wanna get eaten this way.
why are they so funny!
@timeiswhat
And what is exactly your definition of suffering? o.0
ಠ_ಠ
It's... beautiful!
Cool! Yet wicked weird.
NOM NOM NOM!
Is this real time?
My bio teacher is awesome. she has 2 flying squirrels.
its freaking out in the vacuole!!! 0:30 - 0:42
my microscope magnifies 100/1.25, is that enough to see bacteria?
its real time bro
luckely that they are quite simple living organisms
imagen being digested in acid when being alive
lik if u cri everytim 4 teh chilomona
I came here just wondering, what is an Amoeba?
It's not the protist flailing around trying to escape, they can't move that quickly. What's actually happening is that the amoeba secretes enzymes at it, and the breaking down of the protist's cell membrane releases tiny bubbles of gas that causes it to look like it's shaking (it's exactly what happens inside your intestines when you digest food). This is similar to what happens every day in your body when your immune cells kill bacteria.
you probably do, thousands of them live in most still bodies of water.
god has a plan for these microbes!
put plankton from spongebob in there
SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!
sorry i felt it was appropriate
I can see the pseupod take the chilomonas
i want one as a pet
I feel so bad for it >.
cant break through cytoplasm
Poor chilomonas
@dallastxi3 me too!!!
@toadeepants
Suffering?
Microbe?
Death?
Duuuuuddeee, you must be sooo hiiigh maaaaan.
lol amoebas are so awnage =D
Im planning to make a fight with amoebas against hundreds of simple single celled organisms =D
@Ilamarea kml ikr
LOL
you nasty amoeba!
I thought we were friends! :(
@Scorpiosnehith k my teacher said its possible but u have to know what it is to tell.....
Poor thing was struggling inside...
Where are the vegans protesting against this cruel murder of a creature?
@Ilamarea Ha ha.. Oh come on. Haven't you ever read Dr. Seuss? 'A person's a person, no matter how small?'
Anyway, just because it doesn't feel pain, doesn't mean it doesn't feel distress on some level (albeit, obviously not consciously). I'm not saying what's happening is BAD. Obviously things are eating each other all over the place. I'm just saying he has a point- suffering is still suffering. Even if it's totally unconscious and absent of pain.
@2t22tornadosiren U prolly have a few and dont realize it
That protist was a noob.
@BloodyParanoiaxx numnumnumnumn nomnomnomnom
phagocytosys is action LOL
Neil Lu
lol poor thing
@2t22tornadosiren I have one as a pet >:D
fuck, amoebas turn me on
no du
at 0:34 "OH NOOOO GETOUTGETOUTGETOUT" lol still this video is awesome :DD
@Ilamarea kml ikr
0:31
Chilomonas: why is it so dark? wait nooooooooooooooooooooooo
thanks for uploading this video. this helps in my project
@toadeepants i wouldnt really consider it a death, afterall the protist just becomes part of the amoeba. so we arent really seeing its death, we're seeing it become a part of something bigger than itself. remember, energy can never be destroyed, it only changes form. much like how the form of this organism changes from a protist to an amoeba, and after the amoeba dies it will change again.
Watched this for a microbiology class, I was also listening to Battle of the Heroes from Star Wars while studying. It made it so much more epic
OMG!!!
so fascinating!!
Wow. This changed my life..
amazing video, I can use this in my teaching. thank u loads John S,Mead
