  • Euglena is a microscopic protist that can be found in freshwater and saltwater environments. Euglena contain chloroplast which they can use to photosynthesize sugars. However, unlike algae, they can also ingest bacteria and small microbes for energy and nutrients.
    Eulgena contain a large whip-like organelle called a flagellum (flagella, plural), which is used for movement. they also contain an eye-spot or stigma, which helps detect light.
    Euglena are also capable of metaboly, which is the ability to change the shape of their cell.
    The magnification of each shot is included in the bottom right hand corner.

    "Protozoan" is used to describe "animal-like" protists. Euglena are algae, so they are "plant-like" protists.

      Not really, Euglena are both plant and animal like, yes they are more plant like but still the possess the ability to take food via phagocytosis. They are hetro trophic in this regard, meanwhile they can sense light via Eyespot and do photosynthesis and therefore they are plant-like.

      No, they think. They are complex organisms, they carry out complex things which is incoded in their genes and carried out by their nuclues. We have a brain, they have a brain in the form of nuclues.

    I had a doubt, at 1:37 the euglenoid can be seen changing shape from spindle to spherical and again spindle..why is it so? It's also seen at other times...
    Pls reply!

    • @awesome1537
      @awesome1537 2 роки тому +1

      That's because of metaboly, a rapid contraction and expansion movement observed in euglenoids , it's because of the pellicle folds or myonemes covering on their body

    Look at the cytoskeleton moving the internal organs of each cell around constantly. They are not only moving because the cell walls contact with the world around it but they are moving around as the cell makes energy adjustments and rations nutrients
