When I start missing days and getting upset because I missed a day, it's usually a sign that I'm doing my study just for the sake of doing it. It's a wake up call to remember why I'm studying and reading. Praise God that He gives us freedom to grow and learn at our own pace!

I have books that I have bought, read through multiple times, and they still look brand new (front cover still lays flat) .... so it took me a loooong time before I ever dreamed of writing in a Bible. With that said, I do not regret it. When I'm feeling down, just as an example, I'll grab that Bible in particular and just go through the Psalms, reading all the verses I have circled, emphasized, written next to, etc. It's so helpful. BUT I have come to discover that when it's time for me to sit down and have my alone time with Jesus in His Word, I need to have a Bible that is NOT marked up. Why? Because when I've tried to read through the one with notes and emphasis added, I either A) become distracted, or B) I fixate on the OLD notes when perhaps He is going to reveal something NEW. So I'll read and reread slowly... sometimes I'll write in a notepad what stands out, and then later can transfer to my marked-up Bible, which then helps reinforce what God taught me. This system has worked well for me.

I’m a man in my middle 70s I started reading the Bible on my iPad because I find it so much easier to read because it’s hard for me to see small print. I still have the same Bible I had back in the early 80s that Bible will be with me until the day I die.
You are absolutely right, John. I've actually never read through the entire Bible cover to cover. But I've read large portions of it over and over and over. I don't read just to read. I study. I meditate. It's when you slow down and meditate, speaking and mutter the verse, that the Holy Spirit will speak. Thank you for your ministry, brother.
I was struggling to read my bible. Sometimes, I felt guilty because I didn't read more chapters. And sometimes I felt anxious for some days I don't read anything. Thank you Sir, after seeing your video I felt inspired and motivated to read my bible. And I am starting now😮😊
Thank you for sharing this! I wanted to do a study in Luke last year. And the Lord kept leading me back again and again to John the Baptist, Zechariah and Elizabeth. For over a month I kept reading that. And I felt like the Holy Spirit just open my heart and eyes to what they went through. I was sorta upset that I didn't read the other parts but that part was SO rich and sweet....it was all good!!
I was recently saved January 27th 2023 and I started in the book of job because of the nature of my salvation. I just finished 2 thesolonians and I am reading and the am not even able to recall what I just read. Just reading through the Bible because that’s what I felt obligated to do it’s just not the same. I’ve been wondering why and even said a prayer this morning and this was the first video that popped up in my news feed. I want to hear from God. We shouldn’t care if we can say we’ve read the entire Bible or not. This video has been freeing and I am going to ask God right now where he wants me in his word.
John Bevere, thank you for sharing this real and honest truth! This...one...video changed my perspective so much on Bible reading, highlighting in very relatable terms the WHY behind the effort. Seriously, you expressed the bottom line of something that had been tumbling around in my spirit for a while now. I really cannot thank you enough!!
I have been listening to videos and researching various ways to read the Bible, as well as how to take meaning notes in my Bible. YOUR VIDEO IS THE BEST ONE I HAVE SEEN!!!!!! I received a revelation, when you said it is not the quantity read, but the quality of what I have read!!!! Thank you so much!!!
I think it’s admirable that you made it through the whole Bible regardless if it takes a whole year or 10. Not many even as self proclaimed Christian’s even read the whole Bible! I’m going to finally make it through the whole Bible on GODS timeline, who knows how long it’ll take
Also, totally agree on the value of a physical copy of the bible! I get so familiar with my bible that when i think of a verse i know that it is, for example, on the page on the right in the left column towards the bottom. My relationship with my bible is so personal that i find it difficult to read from, for instance, my wifes bible. Same version, but something just feels different. Great teaching brother.
I have started and failed the in read in a year plans. Time and again. This year I’m working through the Old Testament only. Next year-NT. It is much more manageable for me, and I’m seeing so many new things. Have I missed days? Yes. Thank you for the reminder to give myself some grace. God shows up daily, and that’s the win I need to focus on!
Amen It takes me literally all day sometimes to do my Bible study some days I don’t even get through half it. I’m so thankful to the Lord that I’m understanding even if it is taking me longer than others to finish. I feel the guilt of not reading at night
Your video popped up on my recommended and it was exactly what i needed to hear! It’s truly amazing how God will speak to us because I’ve seen so many videos similar to this one but none ever captured my attention enough for me to click on the video. My boyfriend and his sister just told me the amount of books they finished and i felt as if i was behind because it takes me forever to get through one book alone. This made me feel so much better because although i haven’t finished a book, I’ve learned so much … and i just started my bible studying journey 3 weeks ago. Thank you so much for this video !
Wow! I almost scooted right passed your posting! You have opened my eyes, you have provided a big “WHEW!!” moment. I find days where I am spot on with my daily reading. I’m working on my 5th time through the Bible, and feel the immense guilt if I miss a day. I don’t always feel The Spirit speaking to me, but continue plodding along. Thank you so much.
Man oh man God has been speaking to me!!!! So I recently started my walk again with the Lord, I did get lost, but I found my way back, anywho, I have been worrying that I'm not reading enough, or even journaling and memorizing scripture, and this is all in my head, nothing I'm praying to him, but like the GOOD GOD he is, he knows me, and he sends me to these places where I can hear him and get validation, all without speaking a word about it. Man, GOD is good. Thank you!
It isnt the amount of time that you spend reading nor the amount you read per day or week. Its about just being in that moment. In that moment, whether you can only read for 5 minutes, then thats 5 minutes that you get to spend with the Lord, and thats a blessing. Sometimes i dont have time to do a full study session so i take my closed bible and ask God to let me open it to what i need to read the most in that moment and its always exactly what i needed to know or hear. Sometimes just reading and reflecting on 1 verse can fill you with more light than reading for an hour. Just be in that moment with God!
Good word! Trying to read the Bible in 1 year is like traveling through a state on an interstate... you get through it but you haven't really stopped and gotten to know the state. From one marker of the scriptures to another, I found what I've marked can help me share with others as time goes by. Thanks for a good video.
Hi, this has just come to my attention and its just wonderful thank you. Ive just started over a new Bible reading plan and found your words very encouraging. An important part is praying beforehand, I sit down to study and of course I am instantly distracted. I find in my life ( Im 70 and been a believer for 40 years) I lack endurance, I am praying I will learn to endure, so important in these last days. Bless you X.
I read the Bible every day as well, but I have never high lighted like that. So that is so much more absorption. Totally agree Only The Holy Spirit can reveal the scriptures to you. The scriptures are so Powerful to help us with our daily walk. Maybe something we struggle with, all of a sudden we read a passage and like we need to change that certain area in ourr lives whether it be anger or always qyuck to respond... eg I just read the other day rather listen and slow to speak. It's such a Blessing this video. Keep doing what you do. May God continue to Bless you and keep you. Shalom
Thank you. This is what I truly needed to hear today. Long-time believer, but I have never read the Bible, so I thought the whole “read the Bible in a year” plan would be fitting … I love the metaphors of coming out of a fast … you wouldn’t eat all the skipped meals :) AND you need to really chew each bite throughly, enjoy/appreciate/find satisfaction. Anyway - thank you and God Bless ❤
John, may I suggest another way to set a daily goal? Rather than "I have to read a certain number of chapters per day," try "I have to spend a certain amount of time reading per day." If you measure your daily reading in _time,_ you won't feel pressured to hurry up and zoom through X number of chapters without being blessed by them.
Not even that, but setting out to understand the word of God as much as you can should also be a daily goal. Don't read to forget, learn to remember. It will be more worthwhile of your time, instead of spending 1 hour reading and forgetting all you've read or misunderstanding (or not understanding at all). May God bless you💜✝
Nobody should feel pressured to read the bible. It's part of a Christian's "job description" to read the bible, otherwise, you have no clue what you need to do every day for God's kingdom. There's no right or wrong way to read the bible. Just do it.
Thanks for the reading tips and encouragement at the beginning of this video. It filled me with so much hope in our often fast-reading, read a the Bible in a year , quantity over quality bible. It was just a short, very freeing message and reminded me to prioritize studying over just getting through. Thank you so much
Thank you, this speaks to me so clearly, I have previously read several chapters to try to make do of a missed day. Now I know it's not about quantity but quality time with God.
Even though I know “quality not quantity”, I love hearing it and being reassured. It’s easy for me to forget that and want to read quickly and say I read the whole Bible. Thank you for the reminder :)
When I listen you I m very blesedd and I feel father' s heart. Thanks to God for you and what you do. Sir John This what you say is exactly what I've done from years. It s like confirmation.
Having just started my journey through the Bible on my own I appreciate you taking the time to explain this so well ❤ this has changed my perspective and reminded me to give myself grace and take time to read and listen! Thank you~ and thanks be to Jesus for putting you in my path at the exact time I needed it!
Thank you so much Pastor John, I was about to start a reading schedule and I just got my release by listening to your teaching, it's not quantity but quality, allowing the Holy Spirit to flow!
I’ve just bought my life application bible, and I planning to do it in a year.. I’ve took your advice on board and scrap that idea and just spend sometime each day I can and try and make the most of what I read, I suppose this way it will become less of a chore and become more enjoyable and meaningful! I’m also not going to obsess over note taking.. I’m a recovering addict and I think for my first time, I’m just going to highlight things that really stand out for me in my recovery and lessons I can apply to this..
Thank you, I've just found your teaching about Bible study and I'm feeling empty but at the same time hungry to copy your method. I'm recently lukewarm since if put my eye's on preachers and spiritual people and got the shock of my 42 years of life, to such an extent that I nearly lost my grip in religion. But still hold on to Jesus, So I'm now trying to get hot again, since Revelation talks about lukewarm. Thanks a million.
Brother, you are so on point! I think it's useful for new believers to read all the way through as soon as they can, but after that, it can take me a couple of weeks to get through a small book, or a couple of days to get through a big one. It all depends on how much I'm meditating on it, whether the Lord is leading me down a particularly trail, etc.
Totally agree with the 'catch-up' bit. I read through the Bible in 2018-19 using a one year plan, but it took me 18 months. And the only reason it worked was because my plan wasn't marked with dates, it was just "day 1... day 2...." etc. So you miss a few days you just carry on where you were rather than having to catch up. Having read all the way through now, i think it gave me a good grounding but i wouldnt do it again. For the same reason you discussed: The Bible in a year means you need to read 3-4 chapters per day. And for me, the more i read, the less i take in. So now i limit it to one chapter in a day absolute maximum (unless God tells me otherwise) and try to squeeze every bit of revelation out of it.
Thanks for this I have read the bible before in many different ways in all the ways you said, however for awhile now i have wanted to really study the bible and would see people writing and draeing in their bibles and syudies and praying with scripture never knew how to score it off in bible or to really pray with the Holy spirit and read the bible but this short bible lesson taught me loads!! Thank you now I can finally use my highlighters i bought ages ago. lol . Thanks so much God Bless you!!
First of all, thank you John for decades of faithful teaching, and holy living. God is pleased! As a minister of the Gospel and an online teacher I have a progressive reading plan that allows me to camp out in different parts of my Bible every week. What you said about taking the pressure off when I fall behind is encouraging. Bible study is not a race but it is revelation. Your prayerful, careful approach is better. Hearing from God-what could be more precious? Brother, thanks again. Reverend Darren McClelland ✝️🙏🙂
Thank you, SO very much for this simple, short, yet important way of how to study God's word. Now I can finally start implementing something more conscise. God bless you.
Well said it’s quality not quantity , it was about quantity to me and trust me it was tiring, didn’t even get anything but now I have lent to study a verse for even more than one day and it’s interesting and revelation to me thank God for this video
John, I just got a new study Bible and I want to take notes in a strategic way. I will definitely implement some of the ideas we’ve presented. Especially when a thought continues from one chapter/verse to another. I once heard a minister say, the words are anointed, the numbers aren’t. 😂 I love and appreciate you and Lisa and your ministry.
I think that there is a difference between reading through the Bible to get the big picture and studying a passage to find what God wants to teach you. I try to do both. I also periodically invite others (especially my family) to do a short term reading/study together. (This includes my grown children and some of the older grandchildren.)
This is a great reminder for me, thank you! I spent 12 year’s studying under Kay Arthur, Precept Ministries, doing the Precept Upon Precept studies which are the most in-depth. That was year’s ago, and I have struggled to get back into my Bible for many year’s due to serious Chronic health issues. I have Stage 3B Kidney disease, 7 autoimmune diseases;n3 of the worst are Lupus, Mixed Connective Tissue Disease & Celiac Disease. I have also had 25 major surgeries. All of this combined with the year’s of a lot of medications that should not have been mixed has left me with Traumatic Brain Injury. I have a difficult time staying focused, organized, a delayed intake of information, etc. Because of all of this, I really struggle to be consistent with a study. Just doing a daily devotion is not going deep into the Bible. Every time I try, I give up. I am going to try and take your class “Hearing God”. Do you have any suggestions for me; is this a course that I should be able to do? Any advice is a blessing to me✝️
Very good it help me so much especially when you said our goal is not to get through the Bible our goal is to hear from God 😮 what a concept. Thank you... God is soooooo Good.
My grand kids don't get that I have a lot of bibles cos I love to read all of them. I prefer the nkjv when I do a deep study, but I love the CSB, and the NLT as well and I will even read a paraphrase too ... I love learning what tools people use, and why, so my book collection actually gets bigger too at times. Thank you for this video
absolutely love the NLT its thought for thought but so good...with the nlt 4 chapters a day is really easy compared to using harder translations. I always do 4 atleast chapters a day but when you start out reading depending on your schedule its okay to do less! its important to really take in what your reading vs just quantity.
He's right... Last year was my first time reading through the bible cover to cover. It was absolutely quantity over quality. This year, I started reading chronologically, but I'm studying each day's readings as well, and I'm finding passages I don't remember reading last year AT ALL, because of the focus on "getting done" last year.
I kept getting frustrated that I never could make it beyond Leviticus so I finally decided to just focus on the New Testament and just reading the New Testament through in a year and that has helped me greatly
Great work! I also would mix up minor prophets with the longer history books in the OT to help me through. It's so important we as Christians have read the entirety of God's Word to us even though this guy makes a good point with meditating and not skimming to say "I read it". I also recommend a study Bible, Mcarthur's or R.C. Sprouls are very good. I think it's Bible project here on youtube does a great job with short videos pointing out major themes of chunks of books - very helpful for understanding the why of Scripture organization. :)
Amen! Thank you John! May our faithful Lord bless you and keep you and may his face always shine upon you and give you and your family peace abundantly through Christ Jesus our Lord amen.
This is fantastic! Thank you for sharing. As a pastor, I always encourage my people that it's quality over quantity - but somewhere along the way we got this idea that it's quantity.
Its not quantity, its quality that matters when reading the bible. Highlight promises, cities among other things in different colors, I will create a chart to remember the colors and the most important thing I got out this video was “its not about reading the entire bible but about hearing from the Holy Spirit, which means if a couple days are missed don’t go back to them just keep going.
There are reading plans that have you read 5 days per week. That gives time to catch up or catch a breather. Those work best for me and seem easy to stick with….
Your good or God book is one of the books that I got with my first bible I ever touched in 20 years and it helped me understand the bible even than if I didn't have have it.
John this is very interesting. Thank you. What I appreciate is finally seeing someone do this type of video that is an Pastor/Theologian because most of what I see is soccer moms going crazy over pastel pens and highlighters and stickers, which are great and have their place if you are creating a scrapbook... but who do not go through necessarily from a "Study" method view piont. You marking system looks more in line with what makes sense to me and I would really like to see more. What is circled, what is underlined, what is highlight along with your color code and any symbols. As one who is considering seminary, I can see having several bibles for mark up, one that would be "study" based, with another separate bible made for preaching and another for bible study teaching to others. I would not ask you to go into all three of those, but just your personal study note and mark up systems .
Thank you, Bro, John for the Word of God I love your Boks and lately your Video and listen your Wife and your Sons round table sharing with your Wife. Just Listen to The Fear of the Lord at Sister CeCe church. Love in Christ
For those that want to really take notes in the bible, but they don't have a physical copy. The best one for me is the all called life bible. The Youcat one is a bit difficult though it has more translations.😊
I have tried to read the whole Bible in 1 year many times, and always unsuccessfully. I think every christian should read the whole Bible, but not necessarily in 1 year, I feel that reading 3 or 4 chapters per day to accomplish the goal of 1 year-reading the Bible makes us miss lots of important passages and reflections, sometimes I feel the spiritual need of spending more time analyzing or praying on a specific verse or paragraph, intead I feel mentally urged to skip and move on to the next chapter in order to achieve the goal. Another point is that many times God wants you to leave "the script" , the plan, in order to minister something in your heart, example: I was supposed to read Leviticus according to the plan I was following but God spoke to me to interrupt the plan and read Ephesius which was really fit to the moment of life I was going through.
Absolutely loved this video and appreciate the way you do your note taking in your Bible. I'd love for you to do a more in depth video of your mark up system. You went over blue, but skirted over black and red. Why do you highlight some things and underline others? I've been researching a lot of different bible markup / highlighting systems and yours seems be the simplest method. I'd love to learn more.
Thank you so much for this! I'm starting to go back to church and getting back into church. With that, I'm going to start studying the word. Sadly my eyes are bad and I'm unable to read for very long so i use a bible. This has gotten me excited.
When I start missing days and getting upset because I missed a day, it's usually a sign that I'm doing my study just for the sake of doing it. It's a wake up call to remember why I'm studying and reading. Praise God that He gives us freedom to grow and learn at our own pace!

Thank you this comment really spoke to me thank you for the reminder God bless
Thank you, I just finished the New Testament and I really want to reread and take good notes. This is a good thing to remember
You opened my eyes more. Praise God!
Needed this comment right now. Thank you🙏🏽
I pray b4, read slow, stop, ask Holy Spirit, sit and mediate on it then read more, repeat
Same! Helps so much
Amen, best way to study and hear God🙏🏼
It’s not quantity….it’s quality. I’m so thankful I came across this teaching. Thank You Lord & thank you Pastor John

The Old Testament, the original and only bible.
Rather than "I have to read a certain number of chapters per day," try "I have to spend a certain amount of time reading per day."
If you measure your daily reading in _time,_ you won't feel pressured to hurry up and zoom through X number of chapters without being blessed by them.
I love to read and study from the NLT Bible as well; and just like you, I also mark up my Bible. I love to read the Bible, I really love it.
Sakura Pigma Micron pens, if anyone is wondering. I have some, and they're lovely! They have archival ink, so it won't fade. God bless you all! 🤍
Thank you for that helpful tip!
Even though I know “quality not quantity”, I love hearing it and being reassured. It’s easy for me to forget that and want to read quickly and say I read the whole Bible. Thank you for the reminder :)
Thank you for helping me not to feel shame for not reading fast enough and all of the things that come with this!
Me tooo! I love a physical and paper Bible!
When I listen you I m very blesedd and I feel father' s heart. Thanks to God for you and what you do. Sir John
This what you say is exactly what I've done from years. It s like confirmation.
Thx u for sharing, thats mi routine everymorning, do mi quiet time with da word of God, I felt empty when I didn't do it, 🙏🙏
Having just started my journey through the Bible on my own I appreciate you taking the time to explain this so well ❤ this has changed my perspective and reminded me to give myself grace and take time to read and listen!
I’ve took your advice on board and scrap that idea and just spend sometime each day I can and try and make the most of what I read,
I suppose this way it will become less of a chore and become more enjoyable and meaningful!
This was so helpful because as you stated we can feel condemned about not staying on schedule. Thank you so much.
Wow! I have been looking for how best to study the Bible, I thank God for bringing me here. I get it now, it's not quantity but quality.
John, I literally do all of these things but I still learned so much from this video.
Thank you for continually blessing my life!
haha, I thought I was the only one brother!
This is the best tutorial I’ve watched on this topic, hands down.
I’m so blessed to have found you
Excellent analogy about meals, thank you
Thank you, SO very much for this simple, short, yet important way of how to study God's word. Now I can finally start implementing something more conscise. God bless you.
I've read the Bible chronologically and i got alot. Now i want to see and hear clearly so that my heart will understand to obey.
I love and appreciate you and Lisa and your ministry.
I agree with you. I love having a physical Bible while I’m reading. Great video brother! Thank you! God bless you in Jesus’ name!
Any advice is a blessing to me✝️
May Jesus who saves continue to heal you
Did not expect to receive so much from such a short vid, thank you so much John for your encouragement to us.
Reading thru Acts is a better starter, than John
Amen! Thank you John! May our faithful Lord bless you and keep you and may his face always shine upon you and give you and your family peace abundantly through Christ Jesus our Lord amen.
Creepy cult message.
Would have really liked to hear how you use the different colors but this was so helpful, John! Thanks for equipping us.
I would love to see a template for how you mark in your Bible.
Thank you for your encouragement. God bless you.
Thank you Pastor.. Quality over quantity, yessssss🙏🏽
absolutely love this!! Encouraged today!!
Thank you that was so helpful. It’s not about getting through the Bible it’s about the Holy Spirit revealing the lord .
You are such an EXCELLENT “Teacher”
Thank You! 🌹💯📖👏
I also use a concordance and Bible dictionaries to give myself topics of what I want to study on.
I love you Mr John.
Thank you so much for this.❤❤
Thank you for those words of wisdom.
Thank you so much Pastor John this was extremely helpful.
Thanks for this video John, It was practical and encouraging.
Thank you, Bro, John for the Word of God I love your Boks and lately your Video and listen your Wife and your Sons round table sharing with your Wife. Just Listen to The Fear of the Lord at Sister CeCe church. Love in Christ
I love the Bible 🙏🏻
Thank you!! Just what I needed! Quality over Quantity!
que formato de video maravilhoso! vou colocar em prática já! Deus abençõe ainda mais!
Yeah, Jesus once more. Oh, LORD, I love you in all my heart, soul, and mind. Oh, yeah! Amen.❤😊🎉
Thank you Pastor John Bevere. Bless you and your family.
This is so LIFE CHANGING.....
So good, this fundamentals need to be carry for a whole life !
Man, you delivered some very cogent insights. Thank you!
A good idea is to print off a book of the bible with no Chapters, no verses, not headings and read through it and break it down yourself.
Koran should be made this way because it is a killer of life.
Thank you,this was so helpful
Reading a lot truly means nothing if you’re not letting yourself meditate on the word
I get scared to just crinkle a page in the Bible lol, but this looks like next level study!
Thank you for you advice.
Appreciate that. May God bless you & family.
Great practical video , this gave me more clarity on going about my studies
Thank you so much for this! I'm starting to go back to church and getting back into church. With that, I'm going to start studying the word. Sadly my eyes are bad and I'm unable to read for very long so i use a bible. This has gotten me excited.
I was trying to find those pens you were sharing.
