- Photo editing and portrait painting: there's nothing wrong with using a photo editing program to help you see simple forms and colors.
In this video I teach you how to use Photoshop to bring out colors, shadows, lights, and shadows to help you visualize your portrait before capturing it on a canvas. These tips are easy, simple, and beginner-friendly, no need to be a photo editing expert to employ them.
Watch my recent video '5 essential tips for beginners', where I also share some tips on painting portraits with oil paint: • Oil and portrait paint...
It is my intention to publish everything I know about portrait painting.

This men deserve millions of views and subscribers 😻 . I learn so many things , that my teachers didn't teach me🥺. Thank u soo much sir for all this 😻🤗
Thank you
Many years ago, I painted. Primarily in watercolors and acrylic. My journey through life diverted me from my painting and I find in my retirement, I have the itch to return to painting. The last painting I did was when I was in my late twenties. I am now in my seventies. I used my talent in many ways through the years. My professional life was Art Director for advertising and publishing. I have discovered your channel by chance, exploring materials for painting, learning what is new, and how to incorporate my digital skills into my paintings. More important, I wanted to leave my "realism technique" behind. I used to paint more freely in secret, as my Father, who was also an artist, wanted me to paint like a photograph. I was quite good, won several awards, had paintings in galleries, and so on. But I always had a nagging feeling that I had never reached out into my inner self to take my talent to the next level. Your videos, have inspired me... and so I will pick up my brush again. Thank you...
What a nice comment Janice. I am glad my videos inspired you. Taking yourself to a next level is a thing that nobody asks you. You are the only one who wants that. Times ago I said: How to become a good portrait painter? By really wanting to!"
I would love to see some of ur works Ms.Jwolfe do u upload them somewhere
It is really incredible. Most of the people, when they reach like .. 40/50 years, they already stop to learn about 'new tecnologies.' Here in Italy, i know people of 35 years that are absolutely not interested in learning about tecnology. My cousin is 45, and he doesn't know how to send an e-mail. And this is not a joke. Italy is full of these persons, LUCKILY you inspire me, and with these kind of videos you are saying to me ' Have faith, Riccardo '. And thanks for that, Ben. I feel that i'm starting to become (veeeery slowly) a better artist, thanks to you.
So nice to hear Riccardo.
Your videos are always very instructive. You always think about all the details. I watched all your videos. I'm looking forward to the new ones
Thank you
I was just thinking what I could use instead of Photoshop and then you proceeded to give recommendations. Thank you , thank you , thank you!!!

Thank you
È grande ,la ringrazio molto

Some changes I have made because of your instruction: I have begun premixing some colors. I have paid closer attention to edges, connections. I draw using a more careful grid method before I jump in, finding exact location of the eyes and nostrils. I am a student of Max Ginsburg. I paint alla prima. With what I have learned from you, and always Max’s teachings in mind, I have made great strides recently. I just wanted you to know how appreciative I am of your generous instruction. Thhis year Im attending the Portrait Society conference for the first time. I would love to send you some work to show you the changes that you helped me to work through!
Ah! And also, walking away when I begin noodling and not focusing! Your words, “go have a tea, Lee!” lol
So good to hear Martha. Send me some work: ben@lustenhouwer.com
Super.
Nice beautiful
Thanks
thank U

Hello Ben. It's very nice to see you) I'm self-taught and learn a lot of useful things from your video. I apparently subconsciously discovered this way of working with filters for myself, and with its help I worked on a portrait of a friend.
I am very pleased that you confirmed the correctness of May's thought. Thank you.
But I have a big problem that I can't find a solution to - I'm killing my work in an attempt to make it even better) How to solve this problem? How to understand that it is time to stop and the work is ready?
Too bad we can't share photos here.
Join a Facebook group dedicated to helping artist with techniques and critique. I've found it helps a lot with fixs issues with a painting and knowing when I've done enough.
In the future I will make a video on how to stop.
@@shanzmcg Thanks. You usually find out that it was enough when it gets worse)
Gracias por las ideas. Ayuda mucho a quien no tiene el "don " de gran artista. Yo lo que quiero es pintar, por el placer que me dá la pintura y no por parecer mejor pintora....
Gracias Adriana
Very Very nice lovely
thanks
💣💥🔥👍
Gracias, Ben, me fue de mucha ayuda. Usted da clases por on line?
De nada Susana. Do doy clases online lo siento.

Hi great artist
PLeas teach us stroke
How can I change the picture like this?
I really think you love saying mauve :)
I love that color!
@@lustenhouwer I've been adding white to my mauve mix to test it ever since you taught me many episodes back now.
Super vidéo 👌👌 Très claire merci je ne fais qu'en parler sur ma chaine
Thank you Alex
❤🧡💛💚💙💜💜👍💯💯💯
thanks
Ben, shadow colors are usualy complex, so you are not using blues an blacks even for mixed colors?
You can make dark shadows as dark as possible with reds and greens. E.g.Transparent oxide red +Veridian green. If you don't have that oxide red use Burnt Sienna. Of course black or blue can make a tone dark, but I´d rather keep shadows warm with the reds.
Can i download those photoshop at home even though i don't have a masterpeace computer? Thanks
I real don´t know.
Your painting is not bad. Not as good as your drawing. But your on the right line. Be even more free with those colour choices. We have memory colour where it’s our emotional state divided by our memories. Both only as well informed as our encoding will let them be. Our brain blocks in what we don’t remember.
I like what your doing here. Using a machine to give people permission to see things another way. Your right, whatever works works. Throw out any convention that doesn’t make something better.
Good to hear that my painting is not bad and that I am on the right line. I needed to know that mr. anonymous.
@@lustenhouwer From the outside everything seems simple, especially for dabblers.
Why shouldn't we use the blue color? I often use it for shadows.
Up to you. In portrait painting I hardly use blue in the shadows. In landscape I do.
Would you like to make a post about the importance of the background? An incorrectly chosen background instantly makes the whole image look weak. In general, in your work there is a certain philosophy of the background, but it's interesting what you think about it.
Did you see tis one? ua-cam.com/video/Ndo6Wn9ctus/v-deo.html
Ben, what about you? Are you well?
Thank you Maria Consuelo for asking! I am really fine. After summer I start making videos again.
Is your preference for portraits, oils or watercolors?
Are the techniques you demonstrate applicable to either one?
I love to do both. Watercolor and oils. One affects the other.
Nice! Your videos should be seen by more viewers. May I repost your channel without changing anything on the clean platform named Ganjing World? Thank you!
Thank you Alina. At the moment I don't want to be reposted.
Do you have any suggestions on how to learn photoshop?

There are a lot of tutorials on the web
Hello, is it possible to add Turkish subtitle option?
Sure!!
Hope is correct.
Thank you very much, your master techniques and your art are so amazing
@@huseyinbabayigit3419 You are welcome.
Talk too much and do less, this doesn’t help people to know you. Sorry man.
Cannot please everybody. Sorry man
