    A mistake in the video I made: Ging's ability to mimic powers in not actually an ability. It's a natural skill. Also, a typo on the DWUN part - it should read WDWUNE instead of HDWUNE. My bad guys.

But It's more simple to believe she was JUST simply a detour, though probably an impressive woman because I doubt Ging would've just slept with anybody, imho. I just love the moment when Gon and Ging first meet, when Ging is flustered. When Gon says, "If anyone had to die, it should have been me" that snapped Ging out of it. The look in his eye, his love and passion for his son really showed through. That was proof enough for me that Ging, in his weird way, really does care about Gon.

    Oh no Ging is a bad father. No doubt about it, but that does not mean he is a bad person.
    Some people aren't meant to be parents. But he did leave Gon in capable hands and a safe place to grow and thrive. He left clues to find him, if Gon really wanted, and when Gon IS around he treats him with respect.
    But that's it. He admits he tossed out his parenting roll when he left him and Gon also believes that he is less like a dad, and more a mentor figure. They are related by blood but they're not family. It is a strange concept for some people to understand, but it does not prevent Gong from being an interesting person. He's selfish, and self center, but also goal oriented and he helps out the world in many ways. He refused to visit Gon when he was on critical condition, but he also believed in him for every second that he would survive.
    Ging is just an interesting person, and now that he is actually a character and not a concept, it will be more fun to see him actually develope personality.

    • @Stryker1297
      @Stryker1297 5 років тому +214

      This is a great comment. People seem to draw an equivalency between Bad Dad and bad character, or person.
      He's a shit father, but clearly he's one of humanity's "elite", and going off of his 2 star status alone, has to have contributed towards humanity and helped plenty of people.
      Gon wasn't a goal of Ging's, so he didn't pursue fatherhood, yet left a way for him to be found if Gon REALLY wanted to find him. Doesn't mean he's a good parent, but it also doesn't mean he's a bad guy.
      Plus, anyone who can piss off pariston is okay in my book lmao

Besides, he can only imitate "simple punching techniques", so maybe someone using simple punching techniques (e.g. uvogin) would be a bad matchup, if Ging can just his ability with his (probably) amazing amount of nen and his (proven) amazing men control.

  • @lizzie5973

    There is no doubt that Ging isn't a great father, but the funny thing is Gon ain't even mad. This is why I found their first meeting "touching" in its own way. Ging has always said he was afraid to meet Gon because he felt ashamed for leaving him behind, but after meeting Gon he realized that he really didn't have anything to worry about. Gon doesn't care and is equally eccentric as Ging. They are a couple of odd balls that truly understand each other and I see them developing a good relationship moving forward. They won't have the traditional parent and child relationship, but I can see them being good friends in the future.
    I found it really amusing to see Ging so flustered meeting Gon to the point that even Ging's friends were surprised to see that side of him. Ging and Gon are able to bring out each other's vulnerabilities in a way that makes them uncomfortable, but its also cute in its own way since Ging is always so composed.

Better leaving my numbers to him"

  • @Coffee_nightowl
    @Coffee_nightowl 7 років тому +574

    I personally believe that Ging probably wasn't fully ready to raise a child to be one of the reasons why he left Gon with Mito. It was honestlily the best decision he could do. Imagine him raising Gon all while exploring dangerous parts of the world, Gon would sooner or later become a monster snack. Or imagine Ging abandoning his happiness and life purpose for Gon, which would make him even more regretful that leaving his son to live with his sister and mom.

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  7 років тому +190

      Totally agree. Leaving wasn't the perfect thing to do, but raising him would've been even more unfair on Gon, seeing as Ging's mind would undoubtedly be elsewhere, or infant Gon would've been in mortal danger.

    • @unicep12345
      @unicep12345 7 років тому +22

      you would have to assume alot for that to even be a possibility
      you would have to think about gons mother and how she would feel about it.
      plus ging is pretty much a walking contradiction since he has some innate ability to manipulate people and understand them through sheer logic
      but socially akward and terrible at making friends or even being nice
      feels terrible about having a kid and leaving it behind.
      but knows that he wouldn't be a good father, before having one.
      knows that condoms exist in his world but doesn't use one.
      now that i think about it, hes probably the most human of all the characters in Hunter X Hunter
      that lady with the crystal ball who's obsessive over Gon is probably his mom! not literally but psychologically.

      Virgo having children is not an accident. You don't accidentally have sex. With sex comes the possibility of children as an outcome. Anyone who takes a chance with sex and has children also has the inherent responsibility of raising those children. Choosing Adventure is a selfish goal over struggling with raising your child. That's just the truth.

      Not really. Yes, indirectly it would be his fault but with that logic every sperm donator and every guy who's condom broke should be forced to raise his son.
      We don't know his story but Ging himself shows by giving Hon to his family, that he loves Gon but he can't raise a child.

      pretty much, this is why he's not a bad person or even parent, just a bad father, or to better say, father figure, even though with gon being as peculiar as he is he's managed to stilll be decent enough for gon to look up to him, just not as a father but as a goal, given how kite proved to be far better of a father figure, with ging being too detached for gon to be able to consider him close family(not that uncles can't be close family... gon's mother is her aunt, his father figure is a friend of his actual father, and his actual father feels like an uncle, talk about perception not matching reality's roles).

    "Ging is the first Hunter in the name."
    "Gon is the Hunter that is hunting the Hunter, thus making him a 'Hunter x Hunter.'"
    *(Brain explodes)*
    All jokes aside, I've never felt like Ging was a bad father. I could empathize with Gon in that I also know what it's like to grow up without a father, but because Gon never resented Ging for it, I couldn't find it in me to resent him either. As the story moves along and we learn more about him, the idea that Ging is a bad person becomes less and less plausible to me. Like you said in the video, he becomes less of an idea and more of a character in his own right, which makes his perspective easier to understand. I'm excited to see how the Dark Continent Arc plays out now that...
    A): Ging has been introduced to the story, and
    B): Gon has achieved his goal.
    Not only does this mean that we get to learn more about how Ging operates, but we can also get a new perspective on Gon's life. Where does he go now that he has achieved his ambition? How does he adapt now that Killua is elsewhere? There's just so much for Togashi to explore here, and I can't wait to see what he has in store.

    • @Aleczandxr

      "All jokes aside, I've never felt like Ging was a bad father."
      That seperates you from a lot of the commenters here, haha. But I totally get you. He's just a different sort of person. Totally unique. And sometimes it takes a bit of mental reframing to buy into what Ging is all about. Hell, that's what I had to do.
      Very good point about Gon - I'm most excited to see where he goes from here. What'll he do now, with no clear goal? Will he tread water in existentialism or just do the classic Gon thing and strive relentlessly to some other goal? Can't wait.

    • @silversamurai0267
      @silversamurai0267 7 років тому +64

      Mathwiz97X I'm so glad there are some people who share my opinion of Ging not being a bad father. (I have literally written over ten paragraphs, in a post on another video, in order to fully analyze his character and explain why he's not as horrible a father as people make him out to be. XD) He's his own person, with ambitions and flaws. He's selfish, yes. But, Gon is too. And we all love Gon, despite his flaws. Imagine if Gon had a kid, but he was busy trying to achieve an important goal in his life. And, in the end, he chose to give his child to Mito-san, asking her to raise it. (And he left something to help his child find him later, if it really wanted to find him.) Would you hate him and call him a bad father for this? I wouldn't.
      Ging had Gon, for whatever reason. And as important as raising a child is, Ging decided that achieving his life's ambition was more important. Perhaps a little selfish, but it wasn't exactly WRONG. It was a choice. A bad father would have abandoned Gon completely. Probably would have given him up for adoption or left him stranded somewhere. That's a bad father. Instead, Ging went all the way back to his childhood home in order to give Gon to a trusted family member. (He was probably lectured to no end for it too. XD) And he even went a step further, and left clues behind for Gon, in case his son had the desire, the will and the capability to find him. (And lets be honest here, it must have taken a lot of thought to make those clues.)
      And these clues lead to trials. Trials that would make Gon stronger, or else, prove that Gon wasn't ready to meet his dad. It wasn't only because Ging was trying to hide away from Gon, afraid of facing the child he abandoned. The trials were also there, because it's most likely horribly dangerous to be around Ging. A powerful man attracts powerful enemies and very dangerous situations. That's not something you want a defenseless child to be around. Ging chose not to leave this dangerous lifestyle, but he also chose not to coddle Gon and purposely try to keep him away from this lifestyle either. He gave Gon the choice to go after him, and the trials to prove that Gon could handle being around Ging.
      So, in the end, the only "bad" thing Ging really did, was he chose his ambition and freedom over personally raising his son. He still cares deeply for Gon, which is only obvious when you realize that his actions speak more than his words, and he has ALWAYS managed to teach Gon very important life lessons. Whether it was through the trials, through Ging's own friends (like Kite and his friends in Greed Island) or through his own advice when they finally meet. Honestly, for a distant father who's never around, he's phenomenal. XD
      I'm gonna stop now before I get too into this. XD I absolutely love analyzing Ging.

      Hes a straight shitty dad. There is no other way around it. That was the whole point of Leori punching him and why that moment was so satisfying.

    I think you've missed an interesting aspect to Ging. He could potentially be a possible exploration of Togashi of himself towards his work. It is clear that Togashi loves his work very much but he does not prioritise it above the important things in life: family, health, spirituality. For me, the distance Ging places on Kite and Gon mirrors Togashi's own interdependent relationship with his fans he's unwilling to compromise his own works just to give the audience consistent and large volume of work.

      Aleczandxr knowing his perception of good and bad it's not too far fetched. Maybe gon ends up being the stories villain(while remaining a protagonist). He has related, this far, in the story to those who Society depicts as villains due to their goals and the way they go about things not being accepted into the right and wrong side of things. Justice itself is merely the spawn of the right and wrong dealio

    • @SaruStuff124
      @SaruStuff124 7 років тому

      Oceanfor 44 Yeah, but you wouldn't get a spider to look like Gon did when he confessed to Ging back at the election hall. Gon has remorse, and a kind heart. Even Ging, who's a jackass father, is a great guy. Not a villain in any way. Who knows? He's probably had a breaking point too maybe, just less explosive. But Gon went through a lot for his age and overall personality. Netero was on the bridge of insanity too, but that was for his training, so it had neutral focus, not a toxic focus like vengeance.

    • @rachetjak11
      @rachetjak11 7 років тому +1

      Never said anything about insanity or breaking points. What I meant is that Gon will be following what he believes to be good while the large majority sees it as wrong. He goes against the grain not for the sake of going against the grain but for the sake of himself.
      Definition of Remorse: deep regret or guilt for a *wrong* committed
      In Aleczandxr Gon analysis video he goes into greater detail about Gon's personality and morals.
      Gon does not follow the what's right and wrong stigma but what is good and bad. He distinguishes what is good and bad by who/what benefits him. He did not fight the ants because they were going to destroy humanity but for kite.
      Gon has good(right) heart and intentions, which is why he was that way in the election hall. That's pretty much the only difference between he and the spiders. For now he is on the "right" side of things with his good intentions and it's not far fetched for him to fall on the "wrong" side of things while still having these good intentions.

It's entirely likely that that's the case, but I always assumed Gon wasn't mad at his Dad for "abandoning" him because he didn't see it that way. She's probably stronger than Shoot and Knuckle, maybe even Morel and Knov, yet she didn't go to help. Kind of a coward. Even Shoot and Knov that were scared as hell managed to fight their fears. Even Zeno who only cares about money, knew he was highly risking his life for a job that is "probably not worth it", did it for Netero, and Silva for Zeno.

    Ging is truly empathetic as well, he gave Gon the choice to find him or to simply not to, either of which he would understand (Would a father who didn't ever want to see his child leave this option?). The choice was beautifully crafted in Ging fashion as well because he left little pieces of a puzzle to find him, and each piece was incredibly hard to decipher and use which made a miraculous journey, he essentially says, "You can either leave me in the past, or you can follow this path and have a hard but fulfilling journey to find me." Who would Gon have been if it weren't for the bumps along the way to find Ging? He has learned so much and met so many people, all for one seemingly small goal. My only question is, 'what now?' Gon has found Ging so what will push him forward, what will cause his friends and his paths to intertwine further? I think the giant enigmatic pandora's box of the dark continent will bring this journey a stark new light.
    Hunter X Hunter has always stuck to me because of the large contrast between the bright and childish air of adventure, versus the grit and darkness of humanity. It only leaves me to wonder what miraculous, heartbreaking and cathartic journeys Ging had faced on his paths as well.

    If Hisoka was a Trump Card for Togashi, Ging definitely was Togashi himself for this story.

    i think it takes hell one of a character to live up to the major expectations have been built up the entire series! and Ging did just that imo! how worried i was for him to suck or to be overrated as a character! the first 2 mins of him were totally and utterly attractive, but what matters that even after a whole arc of him (and more to him in the manga) that there's way too much into him! i just love him and i hope we get to know him more and not just togashi leaving us hanging!

    For Ging, having purpose in life (individual one) is more important than the social norms people are used to and abide by. Fortunately for Ging, Gon shares this characteristic with Ging and that's why he admires him. This also makes them both self-admited selfish people. This sense of purpose along with the very intriguing raw view of the world and life make them attract people around them like magnet. Gon, for example, being indifferent to Kilua being an assassin and from an elite family of assassins, shows how he has a raw view of the world not caring for social norms and being so non-judgemental. It was the first thing that attracted Kilua to Gon.

    When I finished Hunter x Hunter I was surprised at how much Ging's character intrigued me. When I thought of him I could always find new interesting aspects of his character, and you did a great job describing most of them.
    In my opinion, Ging is a bad father, but I don't resent him for that. I think this is because there's a very clear reason as to why he abandoned Gon (which is the one you said in the video): if Ging took it upon himself to raise Gon, all his goals, his travels, his discoveries, his freedom, would all be compromised.
    His situation is also complicated by the fact that Gon's mother (for unknown reason) isn't there for his son, so when Gon was born, the responsability was all his. It's understandable to think that Ging should have done what parents do, and put his child's needs before his wants, but I can also understand that Ging wasn't willing to give up his purpose in life (his "Nirvana" as you put it) just because he had a kid.
    Ging, in that regard, is very egoist, and he's ashamed of that, but I can't really despise someone who didn't want to settle down and ruin all he had planned for life. Maybe he could have found a compromise between his travels and Gon, but I don't think Ging would have wanted to be restrained by someone. Raising Gon wasn't what he wanted, and thus he gave him in adoption to his cousin.
    All this, to me, makes Ging's character incredibly human, and I love how Togashi took his character, which was just a plot device at the beginning, and turned him into such a fleshed out and believable one.

    Even if Ging was trying to find his inner "nirvana", Ging is still a selfish person, hell even said so himself. But even if he is selfish, I think he made the right decision by leaving Gon with Mito. First off, it would conflict with his goals and we all know that Ging isn't a people person. I think Ging knew he would be a terrible father and wouldn't be able to raise Gon properly, so he left him with someone he knew could. He thought of a scenario in which Gon would be raised correctly and where he gets to do what he wants.

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  7 років тому +5

      Oh, he's undoubtedly selfish. Anyone saying otherwise is either lying to themselves or hasn't full understood what he's about.

    • @hawaiianlolo1066

      god forbid raising gon interferes with his goals. Thats completely besides the point. regardless of that he needed to take responsibility for his actions. if he cared about his goals so much maybe he should have subsided from having a kid.You cant put your personal goals over a human you made and need to take responsibility for. your goal have to wait until you take care of what you need to take care of.

    Ging is a man of opposites, representing both the worst and the best qualities found in man. That's what makes him both relatable and likable. A fictional character that combines what we ARE and what we WANT TO be. This can be found in everything we see in Ging's character; looks, background, ideals and manners and so on.
    Simply put, he's a badass anyone can like. Or like to hate. One of my favorite characters in the manga / anime mythos.

    I get all of this. I get the symbolism, Togashi's reflection in the character and what you're saying in the video. But I still can't shake the opinion that Ging is a terrible father. Even though I absolutely love and feel an enormous respect toward his character, I keep thinking that the fact that he abandoned Gon is just unforgivable. But that's also the reason that I love his character so much, because it's so much believable.

      I hate how he reacted to meeting gon. Like I was expecting him to be proud and happy but he saw it as a nuisance. Like it doesn't make sense how all the other hunters talk about him as such a good guy but then he turns out to be a huge asshole

    • @Jackie15997
      @Jackie15997 4 роки тому +5

      Tapu he didn’t see gon as a nuisance. he was just flustered when they first met. if he had seen gon as a nuisance, he wouldn’t have invited him to the world tree. he wouldn’t have shared his wisdom with gon, or joked around with him. ging is proud of gon, and loves him in his own, weird way. they have a relationship, in my opinion, more akin to an older brother and little brother, and i think that’s very fitting for both their characters. ging isn’t an asshole, he’s just bad at communicating with others and somewhat flaky, so it comes across that way.

  • @legallydragonic

    I dont think Ging is a bad dad. I dont actually think he is a dad. Of course, biologically he is but he hasn't done a single fatherly deed and didn't do a single thing to help raise Gon. So I dont think he qualifies as a dad, but he's not a bad person. He just wants to live his life outside of being a parent. He doesn't want to be Gons dad, he wants to be Ging.

    I'd be more sympathetic to Ging's point of view if he didn't literally put a murderer on Greed Island and told him not to hold back if he ever met Gon. Every clue he ever intentionally leaves for Gon also leads to a life threatening situation for Gon.

    • @Aleczandxr
      @Aleczandxr  7 років тому +19

      I agree to an extent, but Razor ended up being an influential and beneficial figure in Gon's journey despite his past, so I can't say that Ging made poor judgment there. He's a great judge of character in the here and now. And life threatening situations in HxH are par for the course, to an extent. He only put Gon in these situations assuming that Gon had become a Hunter, in which case he would be decently prepared, exposed to dangerous situations before and willing to take risks.

    I like the (seemingly) parallel between Ging's and Chrollo's power abilities, one is yet to find himself and steals others nen in order to identify whereas the other just seems to know himself from head to toe and copies other's abilities as he therefore understands them and their "nature" easily
    They both have impressive observing skills anyway
