- The head of Russia's Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill has supported Putin's war in Ukraine from the start. He described those opposing the invasion as the 'forces of evil'. This has angered many Ukrainians who say Kirill has given his blessings to Putin to kill his fellow Slavs and people of the same faith.

@@tg2535 Kirill is aged 75/6. He was a Orthodox Church functionary in the Soviet Union. All Church functionaries were KGB approved as a banned and then tolerated but completely controlled. Most were agents of the KGB, in particular the episcopate of which Kirill was a part, confirmed by released in the 1990s Soviet Archives. There are lots of posts on the Internet, including youtube.

Religious people supporting war and saying it's a holy crusade reminds me of the old saying that fighting for peace is like f@"£ing for virginity.
Both institutions need massive Reforms. Unfortunately, these are not the Middle Ages anymore, where ppl believe whatever the heads of the state and church tell them to. War is terrible. Ah, the famous Vanishing Vlad clip! At 1:10 Putin is shown (supposedly) attending this year's Easter service, standing just in front of a wall painting, with a golden crown on a red platform to his left. After the cut at 1:14 -- _poof!_ -- Vlad is nowhere to be seen! I suppose the sour expression on the face of the guy that was to his left in the first shot might mean that he left a sulphurous stench behind. Alternatively, this is yet another example of the Kremlin's pointless, clumsy, transparent lying, the first shot is of him attending a dress rehearsal (and, my goodness, how Kirill and his minions do love their fancy party dresses!), and at the time of the actual service, Putin was skulking in his bunker.

Surprisingly, the Ukrainian Orthodox Chuch, which is a direct affiliate of the Moscow Patriarchy, is still the most dominant religious institution in Ukraine. It is weird, if not to say outrageous, as if the Anglican Church were the most popular one in the US.

Well, the Ukrainian church has declared its own head to be Patriarch, so it is not really true what is said in this report. At least I have read a number of reports on it. Is DW saying it is NOT so?
Aren't Ukrainians also Greek Orthodox like Russians are? Isn't their church pretty much the same? I find it so difficult to understand why would an important person inside the church like that (Patriarch) think innocent people who are getting attacked are evil people? In the Bible it is said "Do not kill" but I really understand when a country is attacked and that people in it have the right to defend it but this guy blesses the attackers and oppressors? It's sick. This man will be judged severely by God if the God exists.

We follow our traditions and everything, and from what I've seen in the past, this Russian pope was always helping by setting up charities and other sorts. Everything outside of America, the media portrays everything terrible.

Religion and politics are intrinsically linked, because of commonality of goals and procedures. On the other side is true spiritual relationship with God and statesmanship which should be linked for the good of the whole.
This is why I am not religious and think religion is evil.
