I’l be outfitting the interior of this ship over time. See my previous Deck Plan videos for more on the planned layout.
    Description:
A brief video (4:04) of work-in-progress 3D model of a “Sparrow” class starship that might have existed in Starfleet during the old show (TOS) era of Star Trek.
The goal is to design and virtually construct a starship that embodies the familiar Enterprise configuration of a saucer, secondary hull and warp nacelles…in as small a vessel form as practical; sort of a “mini-Enterprise”.
The ultimate goal is to share a completed, exterior 3D model and deck plans so others may build on this idea if interested.
This compact yet fast and maneuvrable class of vessel is inspired by Constitution, Daedalus, Pioneer and Nova class starships. Its primary mission profile is as a science vessel performing short-range scouting and surveying.
The Sparrow class might also serve other mission profiles: training ship, short-range supply or express courier, diplomatic transport or covert, surveillance vessel.
In times of conflict I imagine these vessels may have been pressed into service in a manner similar to the “Liberty Ships” of WWII; being quickly and easily constructed by Starfleet and numerous in production due to their reduced scale and simplified form.
A tactical version of the Sparrow class has all science lab equipment removed and replaced with auxiliary generators to augment deflector shields and the existing 9 phaser banks (18 emitters). The forward probe and beacon launch tube is refitted for photon torpedoes. Additionally, both aft airlocks and adjacent fabrication bays are converted into a pair of rear-facing torpedo launch tubes.
The “Sparrow Maneuvre” involves multiple Sparrow class tactical variants warping in, assuming formation in an escape trajectory at full impulse, before firing torpedoes in concert and warping away.
The crew complement for the standard, science variant of the Sparrow class is 45:
    - Captain
    - Chief Medical Officer
    - Chief Science Officer
    - Chief Engineer
    - Chief Security / Tactical Officer
    - 8 Junior Officers (2 Science, 2 Security / Tactical, 2 Engineering, 1 Medicine, 1 Communications)
    - 16 Ensign
    - 16 Crewmen, enlisted
A typical duty shift aboard a Sparrow class starship requires 15 crew members: 6 bridge crew (commanding officer, helmsman, navigator, science officer, communications officer, security-tactical officer), 4 engineering crew, 2 crew in sickbay, 1 in the galley and 2 science specialists who alternate between time spent in the science labs and the bridge stations of Science 2 and Mission Operations. The vessel typically operates on a 3-shift cycle; alpha, beta and gamma shifts with specifics left to the discretion of the commanding officer.
    Length = 74m / 243’
    Width = 33m /108’
    Height = 19.5m / 64’
The Sparrow class starship features 4 decks:
    - Deck 1: bridge, emergency hatch, captain’s quarters, captain’s ready room, conference room/officer’s mess, senior officer’s workspace, emergency batteries, computer cores (P&S), deuterium tank, matter injector, shuttle bay control & observation room, cargo high-bay storage, shield emitters, forward dorsal phaser banks (3) and aft dorsal phaser bank.
    - Deck 2: airlocks, crew’s quarters, galley, mess & recreation hall, sickbay, sonic showers (emergency triage), lifeboats (6 x 8 person), navigational deflector control room, main engineering and warp core reactor, primary EPS conduits (P&S), shuttle bay (including a single class F shuttlecraft), cargo transporter & storage, fabrication bays, impulse reactors and control rooms (P&S), observation corridors.
    - Deck 3: personnel transporter rooms 1 & 2 (2 x 4 person (P&S), primary deflector shield generator room, structural integrity field (SIF) generator, inertial dampening field (IDF) generator, warp plasma containment field generator, engineering lab, chief engineer’s office, auxiliary generators (P&S), science labs (1-4), emergency batteries, subspace tranceiver, forward & aft tractor beam emitters, lateral (P&S) & forward (P&S) phaser banks.
    - Deck 4: antimatter injector and storage pods, warp core ejection system, planetary sensors, long-range sensors, sensor control room, launch tube (probes and beacons) control room, water storage, waste processor, atmospheric processor, aft, ventral phaser bank.

Your work is absolutely inspired. Well done! Thank you for bringing a smaller, more short range vessel like this to life. Sure the economy of the early federation would require these.

I’m interested in building a “missing link” so to speak. We never saw these little ships on TOS but they were out there. I imagine the earlier ships were a bit “chonky” as one person commented w basic shapes getting more streamlined over time.
I’d love to build more graceful curves and circles but I’m limited by my software and knowledge base.
After this compact ship eager to build something a bit larger next.
Thank you and see you “Out There”!

Overall it is a good design for a smaller TOS-era starship, but at this scale, i think the saucer is perhaps undersized in diameter, and should be noticeably bigger and more typical, with what we the audience has seen of typical starfleet ship design proportions, of the saucer section and body.
For example, at 3:52, i would be inclined to add another ring of rooms and hallway to the saucer section, so that there is a central sickbay, core hallway, inner ring of rooms, a middle hallway (with conjoining hallways forming an X-shape), middle ring of rooms, outer hallway (with conjoining hallways forming a plus-shape), and an outer ring of rooms (and port and starboard airlocks).

Thank you for the view and feedback.
It’s been a challenge to fit everything into a small starship frame. I expanded my saucer section by 8’ in this most recent animation. I agree that larger saucers are perhaps more typical. My goal with this model is to try and design-build a very small ship. I plan to build larger vessels in time. For me the fun and challenge of this ship is the small scale.
Thanks again you for your thoughtful comments!

Looking good AJ. I just watched your video on the escape pod and it looks good, but definitely feels like an impulse shuttlepod. I liked the previous designs you had with hatches for the escape pods on the top and bottom of the ship. If it's a shuttlepod in that orientation it can only launch from the side of the ship. It might kinda look cool to have them sticking out a bit from deck 2 of the saucer. There has to be a way for them to be accessible and quickly launched. You've got 30 seconds before warp core breach and everyone on the ship has to load up to their assigned pod and launch in 30 seconds or less. In my opinion, I'd say keep the shuttlepod, but use it as a shuttlepod. Maybe even have it be something the crew manufactures and assembles in the shuttle bay as needed instead of always stocked with 1 or 2. If you have a Galileo shuttle that's all you have room for unless there is storage on deck 4 or 3 somehow.
As for the escape pods I'd recommend a cube or rectangle with engines underneath, the hatch or heat shield on top exposed to space, and egress or the entrance of crew on the side with maybe a window on the other side or another crew hatch. TNG and VOY escape pods had the ability to dock with each other and share thrusters, power, and interior space when hatches were connected, but I dont recall ever seeing them connect on screen.
In any case, that is my suggestion. I apologize for the long comment. As the designer the choice is up to you and I am eager to see what you do either way. Your forethought on interior space is possibly your greatest asset compared to other designers. If I were Starfleet you'd have a job at Utopia Planitia tomorrow.

You could also remove a few pieces of the main bridge to make it more in line with the size of the ship. If you make the bridge smaller you could probably fit a captains ready room and officers conference room around it.

Thank you for the great and thoughtful feedback.
I appreciate your insight on the bridge scale. I agree it does feel a bit large for the saucer. Would probably evoke a stronger TOS feel were it reduced a bit.
This is all a WIP still; at least the interiors.
I do have a conference room/officers mess and a captains quarters and adjoining ready room off a central hallway I call the “command corridor” aft of the bridge.
I plan to write and share some stories aboard the Vortex in time. Many of the design choices are influenced by my imagining what stories might eventually take place.
Thanks again for your feedback. See you “Out There!”.

Suggestion for med bay, if not already, one of the long term care beds (or all?) to have ways of creating an isolation room. Could be forcefields but this is old trek. Maybe curtain mesh that seals it off. Could be stored away when not needed. A decontamination chamber setup too. Useful when landing parties brought back a sickness that turns them into lizards. As its mesh it is vulnerable. Ship is too small to have a permament one. Or you could just convert a crew quarters. Perhaps one of the crew quarters has that equipment in place and would fit the decontamination airlock in the hallway when its needed.

These are great suggestions. Thank you!
I agree it would be ideal to have some way to isolate patients when necessary.
I’ve also been thinking to install, perhaps in the center of sickbay, either a dedicated diagnostic bed or a small transporter pad. My transporters are on deck 3 and realising moving wounded via a turbo lift to deck 2 is not ideal.
FWIW my desktop computer that I build these models with suffered a major malfunction a couple weeks ago. My files are mostly backed up but probably be buying a new computer in coming months.
Thanks again for all your useful feedback. See you “Out There”!

Reviewing for consideratiosn of where to put the 6 x 8 man escape pods:
= im not sure where on the existing plans that I can see where they would go. viewed an old 2 video and still not sure.
= when I say close it short distance it could mean vertical or horizontal movement or a combination of.
= These areas are always manned so need a short distance: bridge, engineering control room
= Likely having people at time of emergency: medbay, galley, quarters and barracks, science bays
= the hatches for escape pods could be one shot blow outs or hinged.
= the escape pod hatches are going to be large so could have things like sensor pallets mounted on them
    = Consider placement at:
== (1) Deck 1 midships port, where you have the 2 heads change 1 to an escape pod. gives quick access to command corrider thus bridge as well as the upper engineering.
== (2) 2 on Deck 2 between impulse eneinge and the docking airlocks on each side. IF 12 oclock is the bow then the 4 and 8 oclock positons. .
== (1) AT least one Deck 3 aft near the engineering control room. side launching. Other side could be another pod or a cargo bay or workshop.
== (1) deck 4 amid the science labs
== the last probably also on deck somewhere spaced out from the other pods.

I love this ship! I want to see it on TV or in a movie. One thought, I'm not sure a ship this size would need or could accommodate a crew of over 40 people though I'm certain you've already thought everything through.

Thank you for the thoughtful feedback and view.
This is my first serious attempt at “designing” a spaceship I want to envision inhabited the spaces during TOS. The crew # has fluctuated, so yes I’ve tried to give serious thought to many considerations.
I started at 47 but I couldn’t bunk them all and no hot-bunking here. With such a small ship, the missions are much shorter. Also, crew rotation is higher I imagine. The Sparrow Class might represent an opportunity for young, junior officers to gain experience and climb ranks faster with superior performance being identified and rewarded on a smaller ship.
Though the roommate situation is tight esp for lower ranks I tried to provide wider corridors to provide relief from living & working in constrained spaces on a small ship and a reasonable sized recreation and mess hall. Plus: ad hoc bowling alley on the shuttle deck!
Thanks again for the feedback. I’m building a crew in my mind and on paper over time so hope to share comic book style “animated” stories in time.
      See you “Out There!”.

Did like see the fusion generator 3d drop in for the impulse engines. Good job. That gives it a source of power if the warp core is offline (damaged, broken or needing offline maintenance)
Consider blocking 3d volume for dispersed batteries as part of the damage control plans (along with tools, parts, extinguishers, barriers against vacumn, first aid, life support).
Part of me wants to suggest small auxillary generator(s) too but this is a very small ship. Maybe one near medbay or bridge as the "Hail Mary" power supply.

    • @AJFisherDesign
      @AJFisherDesign  3 місяці тому

Thank you. There are emergency batteries in some schematics but I haven’t drawn them in this model yet.
Yes, I have partitioned for a couple auxiliary generators but not drawn them in. I have an EPS grid to tie things together too. I also started building my first damage control location today though it’s not in this render.
I should also say I’m learning how to do a lot of this while I’m sharing it.

    Hello again.
Was thinking about the crew complemented as posted in earlier vids.
Similiar size crews can be seen in real life US WW2 submarine fleet boats like the Gato. Though way different tech it is a comparison. Mostly as I studied them when playing such games. I like to delve into the cultures and history around games or in the case of Star Trek the various world setting material.
One thing that came to mind was the amount of medical staff. From the earlier vids it was IIRC the chief medical officer (doctor) , medical officer then 2 per each of 3 shifts. That is 8 medical staff. (edit fixed to the 8) Having multiple per shift is handy for writing. Real world crew lists around this size barely have more than one in total. Star Trek can be more considerate of care though. Consider smaller arrangements for medical.
Smaller #A: The chief medical officer (a junior doctor), 2 nurses (1 per shift the doctor isn't on) and maybe 1-2 technician. The techs see to machinery maintenance of machines, cleaning, changing beds.
Smaller #B: Doctor officer (again likely junior doctor), 1 nurse officer ensign, 2 enlisted (on shifts when the nurse isn't on).
Smaller #C: Doctor CMO, Nurse junior officer, 3 enlisted as 1 per shift.
During a major medical event like surgery you could have a multiple person surgery team. Still this is only trimming down to 4 or 5 from 8. Its just the proportion just seems high. Most of time there isnt injured for them to treat so they should be on other larger ships. The shot Sea Patrol only has like 1 paramedic level person on the corvette sized vessel.
Consider moving the saved people count to engineering. One thing to think of is while needing per shift 1-2 people in the engine room there needs to be an ability for 1-2 roaming engineering people doing the repairs, filter changes, preventative maintenance. You have 4 so that is possible. Adding the 2ish from lowering medical to the engineering just seems more like it would meet the demands of ongoing maintenance outside of the engine room.

Thank you for this comprehensive reply. This is a bounty of information. I will take time to go through it. In short reply I’ve tried to provide for realistic medical needs though I haven’t thought all the details out yet. A CMO and a junior officer in medicine is my spine. A crew of scientists doesn’t hurt either. I imagine all of the crew will have first aid or equivalent. I will make my way through this resource in the coming days. Thank you!

Great suggestions. Some duties could overlap. Medical Techs could be some of the Engineering or Tactical Techs that are "on call" for all departments and get assigned rotating assignments between all the departments as needed. ?

@02:11 Liked seeing the man half-way along a floor. Took a minute to realize he was in a jefferies tube but once I did it made sense.
Consider making some 2d art of people like someone climbing a ladder. Could have one for people in chairs to show them at console stations in 3d. Not a priority I know. Just a low priority suggestion.

Thank you for the view and comment.
That’s a great suggestion and works for me! The engineering section on TOS always seemed kinda vague to me. I guess it was a horizontal setup? The ship’s core on ENT certainly has a horizontal appearance. That vertical chamber from TMP feels intuitive and makes sense to me imho. At some point there must have been experimentation with both setups I imagine; or maybe even hybrids?!

Thinking of the washroom and showers. With a mix of sexes and races on board the single communal arrangement might get weird. At least a male-female split let alone needs of exotic races. The TOS I know had more crew quarters with shred washrooms per 2 rooms with1-few each room. WW2 ships had communal toilets for where there just male humans.
If the doors were on the curved corridor the showers and toilet stalls could stretch into that space. Then there could be combined toilet-shower rooms with being private to the user of the moment. At least some of them could be done as combined rooms.
An alternate would be to at least divide the crescent into at least two if not three suites. This would allow male, female and "mission" setups. Each suite having a pair of showers and toilets. Though this wouldnt take much more to be shower-toilet privates that go from the outer curve to inner curve.

    • @AJFisherDesign
      @AJFisherDesign  3 місяці тому

Thanks for the feedback. In many cases, what’s drawn here is a placeholder until something more definitive is drawn up.
I am imagining opaque partitions between stalls as a starter. I imagine not all individuals or species hold the same sensibilities about nudity and/or grooming.
Was also thinking to embrace stalls (showers and toilets) of varying size; in light of varying body sizes among species and personal preferences.
It could make for humorous storylines too whereby right before duty and a large character needs to sonic shower and only the little stall is free lol!
