Joan's win predates the 1951 law, requiring winners (or theie estates) to first offer the Oscar back to The Academy. But I feel The Academy Museum should move to acquire the trophy. Imagine being able to see it in person!

They've broadened that to even earlier Oscar wins in recent years, when Joan Fontaine died her wish was that her assets Oscar included were to be sold at auction to benefit her various favourite Animal charities. When the news was announced her estate was threatened by a lawsuit from the Academy if they attempted to sell the Oscar. And she won hers for 1942's Suspicion.

Devistated. Im 41 amd been watching Turner Classic Movies since the 90s. Watching classic movies gave me spunk and an air of confidence. Old Hollywood stars were class acts, with that said im sure Joan would have hated this, if anything give the Oscar back to the Academy. Selling off her hard work to the highest bidder. Shameful.

It later sold for over 400K in 2012. Cathy should have held onto it longer. I guess she needed the money. Wonder how Miss Crawford would feel about it? She would probably say "Leave it where Jesus flung it". RIP Miss Crawford 🙏

Sad why not keep her belongings in a museum

Joan had originally bequeathed the award to Brandeis University, but later allowed her daughter, Cathy, to inherit all tangible personal property.

JC should have kept it to go to Brandeis University. So sad it is in a private collection now.

Thank you for this. Do we know who put the Oscar up for sale?

It does for pre-1950 Oscars. Joan won her Oscar in 1946, so it was out of the Academy's jurisdiction, to legally halt the sale of Joan's Academy Award.

@joecastillo4884 Joan Fontaine willed her 1942 Oscar to be sold for charity, but the Academy threatened, so it was withdrawn. Why the Academy didn't threaten when Joan Crawford's was sold is a mystery.
