Unless you have lived it, you may not believe it. But there are indeed some mothers like that out there. Not just movie stars.
Christina Crawford may sound too polished at times, almost mechanical. But what she says makes perfect sense. Being raised to model your parents, seeing a reflection of yourself in their eyes, that is completely out of sync with the person you really are, and being terrorized by their every desire and whim and obsession. The child may still love their parent in spite of this and can survive, but there is terrible trauma, and it may take a lifetime to make sense of what happened and find a sense of inner peace.

      I believe Christina Crawford!
I was abused as a child, and despite that abuse occurring in a totally 'different' household, by totally 'different' people and in a totally 'different' decade, my story PROVES Joan Crawford abused her children!
Joan Crawford's other children(Cathy and Cindy)'s stories DO NOT count! It doesn't matter that they were raised by the 'same' mother, in the 'same' household, and during the 'same' era! I know the truth because I was abused.

The only reason some people defend Joan Crawford is because she was famous. If she wasn't, no one would be complaining about her "image" being tarnished or say that Christina should be "grateful" to have been adopted. It's the parent's responsibility to provide food, shelter, clothing, education and love for a child - basic human rights. If this involved ordinary citizens, guaranteed no one would be defending the abuser.

I agree. I always believed Christina. No one will ever know what happened or how much was exaggerated. But people tend to have this mindset that certain people (especially the rich and famous ) are beyond criticism and can't do any wrong. You see this type of attitude even among "ordinary " people ; someone that is well -educated and financially well off is more likely to be put on a pedestal. I get some of what Christina's detractors are saying , such as asking why Christina wrote the book after Joan's death .
There are legitimate questions . On at least 2 or 3 occasions Christiana has appeared to contradict herself a little , but I've always believed her. But , had it been someone other than Joan Crawford who had been written about and accused of abuse , no one would've cared or defended the person.

@@michellee2990 feelings change as we deal with the terror inflicted upon us. So, I don't think she contradicted herself at any time. It is so very confusing to feel love and fear for and about a person that we should have trusted to keep us safe. Mind- boggling. That is why so many victims cannot accurately articulate thought and feelings without the right guidance. Some suffer all their lives. The lucky ones do get past it and understand and forgive. Oh but the road is rough

People defend Joan Crawford due to the fact that Christine’s version of events is hotly disputed by people that actually knew Joan Crawford, including Joan’s youngest children , who denied that there was any abuse and were extremely upset at the smearing of their mother.

@@thefairhairedboywiththered2951 Abusers don't necessarily mistreat everyone they come into contact with. That cannot be stressed enough. It's not uncommon for them to target certain people and not others. You can't disregard abuse just because other people had a different experience. There also tends to be a high level of denial where abuse is concerned, especially in families. Gaslighting and Stockholm Syndrome is common as well. Christopher, in the only interview that he ever granted in his lifetime, confirmed that he was also abused.

@@Muirmaiden In Christina Crawford’s memoir Mommie Dearest she wrote of an incident whereby she ALLEGES Joan Crawford strangled her after she returned home from boarding school for summer vacation in June 1953.

Greene stated in her unpublished interview: “I believe I’m quoted as saying ‘Stop, you’ll kill her.” I can tell you that I’ve never seen any discipline towards Christina or the other children that I would call out of control. There was not brutality that night.”

Good job on this interview. I remember way back when when I attended a conference on PTSD for a psychology credit in college. I believe Christina Crawford helped organize the whole event--gosh, I hate to admit how long ago that was...I think I might not have survived without her. I hope she sticks around for a while, because given the political climate in America, it's clear we still need her to educate people about narcissism, bullying, and thinking for oneself (especially when it comes to speaking out against child abuse). Thanks again for this interview.

@@dianeallen6330 Christina Crawford claims in "Mommie Dearest" that she was strangled by Joan Crawford in the summer of 1953.
Here is how she describes this incident in her book:
"The choking pain of her fingers around my throat met the thudding ache of the blow to the back of my head. She banged my head on the floor, tightening her grip around my throat....I gasped for air and felt myself sinking into unconsciousness as I tried desperately to fight back....If something or someone didn’t help me very soon I was going to die. I tried with the last bit of my strength to struggle free of those choking fingers and managed to wedge one of my knees between her body and mine and push upward on her ribs with my hands which loosened her grip slightly. It at least allowed a trickle of air down my throat and kept me from losing consciousness."
This type of physical attack would, no doubt, leave bruises to the neck and throat. However, according to Christina, she had no bruises to the neck or throat, and the bruises she claims to have received to the face were greatly diminished within "a few days."
This is what Christina Crawford said regarding her "injuries" after this alleged strangulation:
"I had one black eye and a cut on my upper lip that was swollen and covered with dried blood. My whole face was sort of puffy and I had a perfect handprint bruised across one cheek....A few days later I was on my way back to the Chadwick’s house...I still had vestiges of the black eye but the rest of my face had returned pretty much to normal."
This claim is medically impossible. Busies to the face take at least a minimum of 1 to 2 weeks to fade. Perhaps this was a quick rationale by Christina in her book to account for no one seeing these "injuries" after she returned to Chadwicks.
By 1988. Christina Crawford claimed in her book "Survivor" that the stroke she suffered in late 1981 was the result of this "strangulation." Christina claimed the strangulation caused an embolism (a blood clot) that blocked the flow of blood to her brain, and this embolism had lied dormant for over 28 years (1953 - 1981) without causing issue before it dislodged and flowed to her brain. This claim, in and of itself, is medically improbably, if not impossible. However, the impossibility is further enhanced when considering that Christina did not even have bruising to her throat from this alleged strangulation.
      In "Survivor" Christina writes:
"In the hospital the doctors questioned me as thoroughly as they could about possible causes of my stroke. They were interested in what might have been a source of original damage to the left carotid artery in my neck since I had no history of high blood pressure or high cholesterol. They asked me about a car accident or a neck injury. I had experienced none. The only incident I could think of was a violent argument my mother and I had when I was thirteen years old. She had been drinking at the time and flew into a rage. I recalled this incident in the book Mommie Dearest, not knowing at the time I wrote about it that I would later have a stroke"
This outrageous allegation is further debunked by a 1978 sworn deposition, whereby Christina DENIES knowledge of this incident. Along with a unpublished at the time interview with the secretary (Billie Greene) who was an eye witness the evening Christina claimed this strangulation took place. Greene refuted the claim that Joan strangled or choked Christina.
Billie Greene -Former secretary to Joan Crawford-unpublished interview: “I believe I am quoted [in Christina’s book regarding the LIE that is the strangling incident] to have said something like, “Stop, you’ll kill her.” There was a point where they were having an argument. What precipitated it was possibly one of many misunderstandings. Or where Christina had lied to Joan, and the hostility was getting greater. Joan came towards her and gave her a good swat, and hit her towards the neck area. I remember at one point taking Joan’s arm when it was in midair and saying, “I want you to stop. You’re going to hurt her.” This was not for Christina’s sake. This was for Joan’s sake. No one wants to see anyone out of control. I can tell you that I’d never seen any discipline towards Christina or towards the other children that I would call out of control. There was not brutality that night. Possibly there was rage. I can’t conceive of the distortion, unless Christina had a deep-seated plan, a vendetta that was present even when she was 14. Christina lied often for absolutely no reason. [The book] was a pack of lies that made your hair stand on end. I have utter contempt for Christina. When Christina was at Chadwicks, she would tell some lies. Like the lengths Joan would go through to see that she had everything to get back to school. Shoes, dresses, etc. I don’t know what Christina would do with them between Brentwood and school, but she would arrive with a couple of beat up, old dresses and the call would come from Chadwicks. “Couldn’t you send this girl one decent thing to wear?” I got Christina in my office one day and said, “Christina, what did you do? All those things we picked out and packed and got ready for you that you chose?” She said, “I gave them to my friends,” and I said, “What does this do? Make you a hero with your friends?” and she said, “No, I just wanted to.” I said, “Don’t you know what you do to your mother when you make her look cruel and evil and selfish?” and she said, “No, it’s just something I like to do. I like to give my clothes away.” On more than one occasion I found Christina to be an opportunist, dishonest and distorting everything, every single actions of her mother.”

@@sailingaeolus Christina Crawford claims in "Mommie Dearest" that she was strangled by Joan Crawford in the summer of 1953.

@@jermainejones6149 Following Joan Crawford’s death in May 1977, her will bequeathed a large portion of her assets to several worthy charities. Among them were: The Muscular Dystrophy Association, the American Cancer Society and the Motion Picture Country Home, which is a nursing home that provides care to the indigent who could not afford care.
Christina was infamously disinherited in Joan Crawford’s will. As a result, Christina attempted to void Crawford’s will, and thereby STRIP these charities of the MUCH-NEEDED financial resources that Joan Crawford had bequeathed to them. Christina did this in the interest of her own GREEDY benefit.
As a result of Christina’s actions against Joan Crawford’s estate, these charities had to PAY for legal representation during the two-year court battle, thus draining funds from the charities' budgets.
In the end, Joan Crawford’s estate settled with Christina Crawford, and her brother, Christopher, in the amount of $55,000, which was to be divided between both siblings.
Christina Crawford later claimed she only contested Joan Crawford’s will for her brother’s financial benefit. However, here are some FACTS regarding Christina’s TRUE interest in her brother’s financial well-being:
Of the $55,000 estate settlement, Christina claims to have given all of it to her brother. This is FALSE. More than HALF of the $55,000 was first paid to Christina’s attorney, who was representing her interest in the publication of her book “Mommie Dearest.” Therefore, LESS than half of the funds were actual given to Christopher. The LARGER bulk was paid to Christina’s attorney for HER benefit.
Christina Crawford’s “Mommie Dearest” was a best-selling book. From the MILLIONS of dollars she made in proceeds from the book's sells, she gave her brother, Christopher, only $10,000 for his rights.
Christina sold the film rights for $280,000 (according to Christina). Other sources cite the sell of the film rights for $500,000. From this sell, Christina gave her brother NOTHING.
Christina NEVER contributed any proceeds from the sell of her book to ANY child abuse organization, or other charity. Nor has Christina Crawford EVER volunteered her time or resources to ANY such organization or charity. Any connection Christina had with such charity was a PAID spokesperson position.
Christina later admitted that she and her husband, David Koontz, spent all of this money within only SIX years, and she was BROKE by 1985.
THIS is who Christina Crawford is. She is NOT a victim. She is NOT a survivor. She is a DISGUSTING, GREEDY, LIAR.
A child with muscular dystrophy IS a survivor. A person battling cancer IS a survivor. An elderly person struggling IS a survivor. Christina Crawford attempted to, wrongly, obtain the needed resources of these TRUE survivors.

She has changed her story one too many times. She took a lot of content out for the re release of her novel. It's a different book now compared to the 1978 version. She's basically a fiction writer. My aunt went to one of her xmas parties that she holds in Idaho and she was handing out decorated wire hangers to everyone who came. I was disgusted when my aunt told me. Making fun of her abuse? Who does that..as a victim myself, I would advocate for the cause if i was in her positions instead of acting the way she is and hanging out with drag queens at parties. She's living off her dead mother. Her husband even left her because he couldn't stand it.

I don't agree with what she did at that Christmas party. I think she has a lot of anger that she won't admit to. But after a childhood of abuse, which can seem like a life time of prison, I'm sure there are times when you want to shout it from the roofs! Again, I don't care who her mother is. And yes, Christina has profited from telling her story and she has used a lot of this money to help other victims. I don't mind that Joan is paying for what she did. She should have when she was alive. There are a lot of "Hollywood" people who claim the abuse to be true but even if only Christina did, I would still believe her.

She didn't find any more from her story..She actually took a lot of the bad things out for the recent re release and added some things about her going to university (which Joan paid for btw) and how her career was. It doesn't even focuses on the alleged abuse anymore. What "Hollywood" people saw it happen? Because the "Hollywood" people who were actually close to Joan say the abuse never happened. People like Myrna Loy, who knew Joan from 1925-1977, and actually worked with Christina in a production of "Barefoot in the Park" had this to say (if there’s someone with the cleanest moral integrity, decency, and kind heart that was Myrna Loy. And she was completely shocked by Tina’s claims. She knew pre-fame Joan (that’s the closest you can get to the truth). She doesn’t romanticize Joan either she admitted Joan was an alcoholic and an ambitious woman.): "I can tell you that when you made a friend in Joan you had a friend for life. She never forgot your birthday, and you'd get a congratulatory note from her when good things happened in your life. She cared about people and her friends, no matter what anybody says. I liked her, and I miss her, and her daughter's stories are pure bunk. Even if they were true, If ever there was a girl who needed a good whack it was spoiled, horrible Christina. Believe me, there were many times I wanted to smack her myself." | "We didn't have any problems in "Barefoot" until Christina Crawford appeared. I've never known anybody else like her--ever. Her stubbornness was really unbelievable. She would not do a single thing that anybody told her to do. You'd go out there on the stage and you couldn't find her. One thing an actor needs to know is exactly where people are on the stage. Christina completely disregarded her blocking, throwing the rest of us off....She was going to do it her way. It was self-defeating and sad, because the girl had potential". | "She wanted to be Joan Crawford. I think that's the basis of the book she wrote afterward and everything else. I saw what her mind created, the fantasy world she lived in. She envied her mother, grew to hate her, and wanted to destroy her." |

Do you know the statistics of how many people are wonderful to everyone else and then behind closed doors abuse their children? And just because Christina wasn't perfect you act as though it couldn't have happened. Maybe she behaved that way because she was acting out. Abuse victims can have bad behavior sometimes, just like everybody else. I am through with people like you! Maybe child abuse would stop if the ignorance and blindness would!

I don't think an abuse victim such as myself would defend an abuser if I didn't have a strong idea that the "victim" in the situation was lying. Joan wasn't a perfect parent; she said so herself. But strict doesn't mean abusive. Joan said she wasn't there for her kids enough because of work. Lucille Ball said the exact same, so did Barbara Stanwyck about her own parenting. But I don't go attacking them because they say those things. And I don't go attacking a deceased person over a book that her daughter was too cowardly to release when her mother was alive. I don't believe the things Dion has said about Barbara Stanwyck either because it's so one sided and cowardly too. It's not like BD Hyman with Bette Davis. Oh well, call me ignorant but if I ever meet Christina i'll let her know what abuse really is.

I have read every book Christina wrote, and I reviewed one of them.
I think Joan was jealous of her beautiful daughter and couldn’t stand she was getting more attention.
That she didn’t care about her daughter being in the hospital is typical of people of NPD.
I went through cancer alone because of that same reason.
I wonder how her brother died so young, and I am disappointed to hear that.
Christina must have been a great comfort to him.

Child abuse does exist, and I do volunteer work with abused kids. There is always someone to do deny the abuse happened that knows nothing about the case.
If you want to claim that she was jealous of her mother, you should look at some pictures of what Tina look like when she was younger, because she was gorgeous, far better looking than Joan.
It is odd that you want to troll someone for feeling compassion for Christina being abused as a child.

At what point on any of Christina's many television interviews did she offer this woman (in person on stage, as a call-in, or even a signed written anything from her) as a witness to corroborate her claim? The answer is not once.

Christina Crawford claims in "Mommie Dearest" that she was strangled by Joan Crawford in the summer of 1953.

In my opinion, the only people who know what really happened between Joan and Christina, are Joan, Christina and God. But many of Joan's friends and co-workers, including Van Johnson, Ann Blyth, Marlene Dietrich, Myrna Loy, Katharine Hepburn, Cesar Romero, Gary Gray, Betty Barker (Joan's secretary for nearly fifty years), Douglas Fairbanks Jr. (Crawford's first husband), and Crawford's other daughters - Cathy and Cindy denounced Christina and the book and categorically denying any abuse. However others including, Betty Hutton, Helen Hayes, James MacArthur (Hayes' son),June Allyson, Liz Smith, Rex Reed, Barbara Stanwyck and Vincent Sherman, the director, stated that they had witnessed abuse. Joan Crawford's secretary, Jeri Binder Smith, confirmed Christina's account. Also Eve Arden who never seemed to have anything negative to say about anyone wrote in her autobiography that Joan was extremely strict and treated her children badly. As I said in my opening sentence, only the ones involved really know what happened.

The kids didn't earn it... She did in fact leave money to her twin daughters. I have no problem with someone calling somebody out on being an abuser but do it while they are here so you can deal with it. Bette Davis' daughter wrote her book while her mother was still alive. Christina wrote this book after joan was dead. If Christina has gotten over this then why is she still bitching and making money about mommie dearest.

She keeps milking the Mommie cash cow. There were 3 other children in that household and she kept them conveniently, out of the story. Cindy and Cathy both denied all of Christina's horror stories and said she wrote the book to make money off Joan and to destroy her image. The Twins - they were the ones who Joan kept by her side and on friendly terms with - wonder why!

@@ben_jamin4529 Billie Greene -Former secretary to Joan Crawford-unpublished interview 1980
“I believe I am quoted [in Christina’s book regarding the LIE that is the strangling incident] to have said something like, “Stop, you’ll kill her.” There was a point where they were having an argument.

I have no doubt that Christina suffered in her childhood under Joan Crawford but she's said a few things here and in previous interviews that are utter, self-aggrandizing bullshit. She claims that there were no therapy modalities for treatment of childhood abuse until she helped to create them-really?? That's ridiculous. Also claims that there was no awareness of child abuse until her book came out-simply preposterous claims. She's a bit of a nut job.

What Christina is implying that all mothers are abusive. Notice that she is not a mother herself. Her speech is always over analyzing and constantly repeating the same words to get the audiences to believe her story by the movie "Mommy Dearest". It seems that
Christina and her mother Joan Crawford didn't get along behind closed doors and the camera. Christina is playing the role of a victim and creates a case scenario that everyone is a victim. That is not always true, in most instances.

  • @SWSimpson

BOO! Still overshadowed by Joan Crawford. I think this continued hatred is terrible and sad. I fell in love with Joan Crawford after reading Mommie Dearest and Bob Thomas' biography of Joan because Joan's own childhood was 100 times worse than anything Christina could imagine and yet Joan became this self-made woman who was the Queen of Hollywood for decades and is still remembered and loved today. The only thing I am grateful to Christina for is the fact that the book and terrible movie with overacting by Faye Dunaway, is that young people who didn't know who she was now know; and a lot of Joan's old movies were released on VHS and DVD to new audiences. I love Joan and Gable movies!
Much of Mommie Dearest was sensationalized as, back in the day, the accepted remedy for sleep walking was a harness type device that kept children strapped in their beds. Christina doesn't know, but perhaps he did sleepwalk and Joan caught him and put him back to bed. I was standing at the top of the stairs in my house repeatedly saying "gotta stay in those lies" and just as I was about to hurl myself down the stairs, my dad grabbed me and put me back to bed. The next morning I was told what happened and my dad wanted to know why I was saying that... I had been snow skiing with my brother and sisters that evening and I was dreaming I was skiing and trying to keep my skis inside of the tracks of my brother or one of my sisters. That was the only sleepwalking event I know of, but in the 70's they didn't strap you in as they would have done in the 40's. No wire hangers? I don't have any in my house because thicker hangers are better to hang things on... it's simple. And, obstinate and disobedient kids are difficult for perfectionists but, a little girl looking up at her beautiful and larger-than-life mother would likely see a scarier scene that it actually was. Just as a home you lived in as a kid and returned to see as an adult is shocking because as an adult it seems so much smaller. Well, similar idea.
Joan was a beautiful, self-made woman who is one of America's greatest stars of the Golden Age, a businesswoman and a human being with flaws just like everyone else. However, not everyone can trash their mothers in a book because most mothers are not famous.

SHE FORGAVE BACK WHEN SHE WROTE IT , IN FACT EVERYTHING THAT SHE HAS EVER DONE WAS FORGIVING HER BECAUSE SHE KNOWS WHAT YOU THINK YOU JUST FOUND OUT . EDUCATE YOURSELF AND WATCH DONAHUE FROM 1978 , WHEN SHE WAS FIRST OUT THERE WITH THE BOOK . SHE HAS ALWAYS BEEN INCREDIBLE HEALTHY ABOUT IT . GLAD THAT YOU HAD NICE PARENTS , WHEN YOU HAVE A "MOMMY DEAREST" IT AFFECTS YOUR ENTIRE LIFE AND YES WE LOVE OUR MOTHERS BECAUSE THATS HOW KIDS FEEL EVEN WHEN THEY ARE TERRBLE ABUSED .

    • @seywhut2985
      @seywhut2985 9 років тому +4

Miguel Mósca I don't care how much soul searching you do or therapy you have - you never forgive. You might sweep it under the carpet and move on - but you never forgive and you certainly never forget. "Oh well they were a sick person." I'm sorry, that doesn't excuse or erase bad behavior. You are responsible for your actions and directly responsible for the other person's feelings or outcome due to your actions. As a child in those days you had no recourse. Now, fortunately, there are laws in place to remove children from abusive homes. But UNfortunately not so much on the mental abuse and that's just as bad if not worse than physical abuse. And I know of what I speak as I am a survivor as well. When you come to terms with the past you realize your past was destroyed and there's no way to ever get it back and it affects your future. It affects your life for many decades until you have lived long enough and secured your own life before you take action. So don't tell me forgiveness is the cure. The cure is being able to have the means to sever those abusive ties and stand up for yourself without the fear of recourse or to be able to handle the recourse. And that only comes with experience. No therapist can teach you that. Once you take charge of your own life - physically, financially, emotionally and mentally - then you can tackle the beast but not until then. We don't get to choose our parents but once we are independent we don't have to accept their bad behavior. Unfortunately a lot of damage is already done by that time. One of Joan's major ailments was Narcissistic Syndrome and a whopper case. Been there - done that - lived it - breathed it - had the t-shirt - didn't like it - burned it.
