    Charlie was king paimon. Peter should have been king paimon because he is male but Toni collettes character would not let her mother have him. She let her mother have Charlie because she just didn’t have the energy. Charlie’s soul went into Peters body because king paimon needed a male body to inhabit. At the end the cult worshipper calls peter “Charlie”. That’s how I explained it to myself. Lol.

      Also prior to Toni's mom putting Paimon into Charlie. She tried to put him into Toni's brother. Toni went to a grief group after her mom died and talked about how her brother killed himself because he had schizophrenia. He claimed their mom was trying to put people (Paimon) inside of him. I also think Toni mentioned her dad starved himself to death. The cult was just trying to make sure Paimon's body was corrected from a female's (Charli) to a male's (peter). That's what Paimon required in order to bring the cult riches or whatever the fuck else.

    • @darleneee92
      @darleneee92 6 років тому +93

      I had to do my research on this paimon. this specific demon requires heads so thats why there was so much decapitation in the movie. Plus he has some kind of connection towards art. something like that. If you notice, the women in the movie all have some kind of artistic hand. The mother makes figurines, the daughter draws and makes little trinkets, and the grandmother would make floor mats. I think you have to google a lot of this movie to be able to fully understand it. There is so much foreshadowing and its an amazing movie. 10/10 once you understand it fully. I had a hard time watching the end without wanting to run out of the theater

    The ending explained:
    • Paimon is the demon spirit that the cult want to bring to the human world. In order to do this, Paimon needs to be put into a male body.
    • When Annie (Toni Collette), gives birth to Peter, her mother wants to “treat Peter as her own son” (aka - put Paimon into Peter).
    • Annie absolutely refused due to her issues with her mother, so the cult decided they would put Paimon into the next child, which was Charlie.
    • Since Charlie is a girl, they needed to kill Charlie in order for Paimon to transfer to Peter’s body.
    • Remember, in the therapy meeting, Annie said that her brother “killed himself because he said my mom tried to put people inside him”.
    Did this help anyone?

    • @shanekelly2259
      @shanekelly2259 6 років тому +30

      • They couldn’t put Paimon into the father because he was from another bloodline.
      • At the start, Annie found a note from the mother that said “Our rewards will be greater than the sacrifice”.
      • Also, the cult was living in the house the whole time. If you listen carefully, before the family enter the house after the funeral, you can hear people walking around upstairs.

    • @shanekelly2259
      @shanekelly2259 6 років тому +26

      Also, remember Charlie said: “Grandma wanted me to be a boy.”
      So Charlie was always sharing a body with Paimon, which is why when Charlie got decapitated, Paimon’s spirit was free and was able to go into all bodies such as Annie’s and Peter’s.
      • The classroom scene with Peter all disjointed, it’s because Paimon is trying to enter Peter’s body but it isn’t working because they need to kill Annie first. Hence why she’s killed next.

    • @crackiechan1209
      @crackiechan1209 5 років тому +16

      Don't forget that Annie had a brother who committed suicide. That's why Annie was afraid to give Peter to his grandmother. She knew something is wrong with her. I think the fact that she tried to burn him while he was a child, was to protect him from something more terrible than death.

    Okay so to explain the ending and general plot:
    Toni Collette's character hides Peter away from her mother. She doesn't allow him near her and thus she is not able to imprint on or coddle the spirit of Paimon inside of Peter. However, with Charlie, this is the exact opposite. The grandmother was even seen breastfeeding Charlie as a baby. This is hinted at slightly when Charlie asks her mom (or we think it is Charlie asking this), "Who will take care of me when you die?" We are meant to wonder, towards the end, what parts of Charlie's behavior was really her and what was the behavior of the demon.
    Once the grandmother dies, the coven/cult must orchestrate the death of Charlie in order to allow Paimon to have the rightful male body that he desires - Peter. You see their symbol on the light post that Charlie will hit her head on later as they are driving to the party - the symbol that the grandmother has around her neck in her casket.

    The scariest parts for me were a toss-up between Peter in his room anticipating Anne waking up followed by the sound of Anne's scream (UGH) and the end in the treehouse. A lotof people don't like the ending but Ari did a great job of subverting expectations. We are so used to everything being "Fight Club"-esque where everything becomes a representation of the character, but Hereditary turned out to be an actual tale of satanic worship. It felt SO incredibly evil, like I wanted to go to church afterwards, and I can't remember the last time a movie did that to me.

    *Spoilers ahead- explaining the end*
    So my take on it and from what I understand from reading a lot about this movie is that the grandmother was able to get close to Charlie so she put Paimon into Charlie's body and that's why she was so strange (cutting heads off birds/not understanding social norms) but to fully thrive Paimon needed a male host so the cult planned to kill Charlie to get Paimon into Peters body (hence why the cult symbol was written on the telephone pole that Charlie hits her head on, shown on their way to the party) throughout the movie the cult was slowly breaking the family down to weaken them and summon Paimon. In the ending Paimon possesses Toni's character right when her husband lights on fire and that's why she's floating around acting creepy and is able to decapitate herself. When Peter jumps out the window his soul leaves his body and Paimon enters. Also, in the book explaining Paimon that Toni found in her moms stuff a little earlier it showed that he needed 3 heads of the same family(grandma, Charlie, mom) and a male host. So now that Paimon finally has that, it's like he's being re born again in peters body, that's why at first he looks a bit confused and Joan is telling him "it's ok Charlie, you have a male host now". Crazy right?

      but why call him charlie when he is a mighty demon named Paimon? isn't that very insulting? The cults members were aware that the body of Peter was possessed by Paimon when they address him. I feel like they used the "carlie name" purely as a hint toward the viewers that Charlie is inside Peter.

    • @Astrid98
      @Astrid98 4 роки тому +2

      Jimmy Charlie was the last host for Paimon so maybe that’s why they call him by that name at first, and probably to also let the viewers know

  • @alex-zm2vn
    @alex-zm2vn 6 років тому +76

    (spoilers) what i took from the ending personally is that charlie had been possessed by paimon the whole length of the movie (and beforehand), and the cult killed charlie to 1) free paimon from her body, and 2) start weakening peter to a vulnerable enough state to where paimon could completely take control of his body. that shimmering light that shines over peter at the end after he falls out the window is presumably paimon, and is seen multiple times throughout the movie. it seems that toni collette's mother and the rest of the cult were attempting to groom toni collette's children in order to succeed in summoning paimon as a physical form (there's so much detail that supports and explains all this but i couldnt even name it all; this movie is so thorough).
    listening to discussions and reviews really helped me process and understand the film's plot without having to go back and watch that movie so soon, which i'm still not ready to do and i saw it months ago. (shoutout to the dead meat podcast for being a great source for understanding this movie post-viewing! would def recommend that episode to anyone who wants to understand & think on it more without going back and watching it!)

    SPOILERS so my theory with the entire film is that the cult is not real, it's a variety of metaphors and allegories for hereditary mental health struggles that was passed down from the grandmother to Toni Colette to Peter. The cult and various other related moments were either metaphorical or in Peter and Toni Colette's minds. Because Peter spent his entire life not feeling wanted by his mother, and spent the majority of the film searching for a "reason" or obsolvtion of guilt for the death of his sister, the ending creates: 1. A reason for her death (to give paimon a body) and 2. The feeling of being loved and worshipped for the first time in his life.
    This might all be my brain trying to connect some dots, but I really enjoyed thinking about it this way 🐜

      I honestly would've preferred this, as it felt like the ending the film was earning, but it also shows us things like the magical iconography around Peter's picture in Joan's house, which only the camera sees; Annie never gets in, so it doesn't really make sense that she would be imagining specific things inside a house she didn't enter.

    I thought the ending was a great “Rosemary’s Baby” type resolution. The imagery was so otherworldly and disturbing in the treehouse and I’m super glad they chose the entity that they did when a lesser film would use “Satan” or something. If your neighbors are going to summon a demon, chances are you’ve never heard of it.

    I saw the movie twice now and the second watch is really worth it, because you catch so many details that you missed the first time.
    In the scene where the son goes to his window to have a smoke the camera changes to an outside perspective and just off screen you can actually see the breath of someone watching him.
    And even harder to see - When Peter wakes up towards the end and his mother is already posessed, the first shot of him waking up shows is whole room. And you can see his mother already sitting in the top left corner of the room. It´s just so dark that it´s barely noticable but if you do, dam, it´s just so scary.
    I love the way Aster includes those small details. Cant wait for his next film :)

    “ *THAT SCENE* “ had me *SHOOK* ! And I saw the movie in theater! The whole room went silent! I love that they didn’t show the aftermath immediately after the way plenty of movies do. I watched it a third time with my brother and a cousin (their first time) and my brother loves the scenes towards the end where Toni’s character was hanging from the walls/ceiling. My cousin left the room before it ended. Couldn’t handle the cinematic genius.

    from what i’ve read, all the stuff about the cult and everything that happened with the people in the tree house in the end and all the decapitation and everything was the actual ritual used to summon this particular demon. and all the lore they found about the demon in the movie is all the actual lore, not like some movies that use a demons name but the story in the movie doesn’t match the actual lore. and the creators of the movie did a ton of research to make it all as accurate as they possibly could. so i think that’s where it gets really confusing cuz if you don’t know the lore and rituals (which majority of people wouldn’t, i didn’t until i read about it after the movie) then it wouldn’t make sense

    From what I remember... the grandmother wanted to pass down the “cult” to Charlie but she couldn’t cause Charlie was a girl. If you remember the mom says “grandma always wanted you to be a boy” and she says other stuff like “she liked you best” or something.
    So from my understanding grandma basically did all this and killed Charlie so Charlie could posses the son and Charlie could “run the cult” (lack of better words lol)
    If you rewatch it it’ll make sense also that creepy smiling dude at the end was at the funeral!!!!
    This movie fucked with me on so many levels but I agree the ending was a a bit messy. I’m still obsessed.

    okay so. I was fucking living for this movie. I was so excited to finally be so scared by a film, I'd never been so emotionally affected, like you said, by a horror movie. And then they ruined it by taking a paranormal/demonic route!!!!
    I was expecting this to be a psychological horror in the sense that the real scare factor would be that everything that happened was in the minds of the characters, hence the title of the film and the hint of the grandmother's mental illness. Hence the behavior of the little girl!!! If they took that route this would've been at the top of my list as the number one scariest movie I ever saw, because it would technically be possible for all of these things to happen and would make the fear feel more real...
    I was honestly in tears during the scene when Charlie died, I felt for the mom, felt for the dad (which never happens in a horror film, usually I feel detached from the characters due to a lack of character development).
    But they ruined it with a csgo Halo ass glitch with the dude floating into the tree house. I laughed so hard that every bit of immersion was lost to me. I hated that scene so much, that scene honestly ruined the entire film and made the ending feel so rushed. I had come to peace with the idea that the film in the end hadn't gone the route I expected/was hoping for until that fucking scene.
    Anyway end rant, to be honest I still like the film as a whole but whole heatedly agree with you, 8/10 for the same reasons.

It may just be because I am someone who doesn’t really believe in the paranormal. I would much more have rathered an ending that explored the psychological horror behind the plot, that would have been much more creepier.

      No it would have been stupid like that inception shit. I couldn't watch the scene where she was decapitating herself cause I really wanted her to survive this and overtop the demon and because I connected with her character. However I will say that the end was too vague and felt "rushed". And yes up until the point where grandma's friend was yelling at Peter I thought too that it would have been a "it's all in the head of the character" type movie but it wasn't

      Yeah, I think this is what most folks don't pick up on is that the conclusion of the film has been foreshadowed throughout. Viewers think that the ending was messily tacked on to the end and is so heightened and different in tone from the rest of the film. It reminds me of the film Audition in this way which is funny because that one scene toward the end involving Toni Collette's character reminds me of a major scene toward the end of Audition! This is exactly why this film will eventually become a classic. The artistic merit as well as all the foreshadowing which is apparent upon each viewing. I don't buy dvd/blu-rays because I move a lot but I definitely want to own this one.

Most people don't know that there's eight kinds of Hell anyway! It's only shown/explained quickly through the movie and to have everything "show up" at the end doesn't result in the big pay off it should.

    Well, the ending is that Charlie was the one who was possessed since birth by the demonic King. After she died, Peter started being targeted so his body can be possessed. By the end, he jumps out the window, dying (or at least weakening him), making it possible for the demonic King to possess him. He does seem to be, however, somewhat conscious of being Peter because he does have to be told who he is. But he is also possessed now. That was my takeaway from the ending.

    Hi Sarah! I am a huge Halloween fan, it is my favorite franchise, and I just wanted to let you know that if you want back story that will prep for the new movie, just watch the original Halloween. The makers of the new film have said they are ignoring all the storylines after the first and are picking up 40 years later as if the other movies never happened. They wanted to stay true to the original, so even the fact that Michael is Laurie Stroud's brother, which we find out in Halloween 2, is not the case in the new film.

    i honestly did not really like this film and i’m quite sad? i’ve heard some people say it’s better on the second viewing bc a lot of things make a lot more sense, so i’ll probably give it a try again - i agree with you that toni was rlly good and i also really loved alex wolff in this, i thought That Scene was brilliant and alex did a wonderful job with it. there’s a few more scenes that i liked, but i felt like the director rlly focused on those scary scenes and then the rest kind of left it there, so it became a little boring to me. i think the ending was weirdly paced, and sort of at times funny and then not and then just absurd and it was too much to take in, but i still rlly enjoyed the parts in the tree cabin. like, the last 5 minutes i thought were rlly great - so the end end for me was good. there’s just so many things i didn’t like about this film that brings down the parts that i did enjoy. it’s a shame, bc i think it could’ve been amazing, though most ppl did think it was amazing the way that it was presented so i guess to each their own. i do wish it was approached differently, still. the cinematography was absolutely mind blowing though and that’s something i rlly rlly rlly loved, and the reason i’ll probably end up watching it again someday.

    'That SCENE' is definitely in my top 5 scenes that messed me up. Guillermo del Toro is responsible for at least 2 of the other scenes on that list, one is from Pan's Labyrinth and one is from The Orphanage. I don't want to spoil those movies but let's just say, if you know you know. I think this film did it's job as a horror and Ari Aster is a director to watch. I'm very much looking forward to his next film. I think it's gonna be a recurring theme of his movies to have a 'that scene', in Midsommar of course it was the old couple scene although that was nothing in comparison to this because it didn't have the emotional connection it was pure shock.

    New to your channel, so I searched for your Hereditary review because I L O V E this movie! Instantly shot up to maybe my favorite horror movie of all time (The Thing, Alien, and Candyman are interchangeable with it to me). I thoroughly enjoyed breaking this movie down for about a month after seeing it. Also, the first movie I can remember that I audibly and loudly said "aw hell no" during the accident scene.
    The pulsating bass at the beginning was so unsettling. The symbolism of threes was incredible to me, in which, in my opinion, the women of the family were metaphors for the son, the father, and the holy spirit. I think that played into the family drama aspect in which women have the most pressure of keeping a family together, especially in times of difficulty. The symbolism of three continued with the triangle under the bed, at the end with the treehouse shrine and the family's placement, and even with Paimon, whose symbol is really four people on a boat that was made three for the movie. Then there was the mental illness aspect of it, literally having the family members lose their heads.
    It also treated the audience with respect, not spoon-feeding every single detail. It was fun to piece it together. IMO, a perfect movie that didn't waste an ounce of my time.

    If you look up the goetia on line and then look at the chapter about the demon named King Paimon you will find many pieces of info that will make this movie even more chilling. The sigil of king Paimon is very similar to the symbols that the necklace both the grandmother's corpse and Toni Collette are wearing at the funeral. Also this sigil is carved into the pole that decapitated the girl and later is drawn in the attic above the decapitated corpse.of the grandmother. It shows up several other palces. Also int the images of king Paimon in black magic literature, he has a bag containing three human heads attached to his saddle. There are many more symbolic references in the movie that relate to king Paimon in actual occult literature.

    I fully agree! THAT scene and just before/after it were incredible and shocking. But I felt like the last part of the movie was just a rush of confusing...blah. This didn't live up to the hype for me. I'd love to hear what you think of the movie Mandy!

    I suggest watching the end again. It's not too complicated and there's so much symbolism. Through out the beginning of the film ( before Charlie's big boo boo (^: ) the hallways and the wallpaper are a beautiful yellow which is for happiness obviously. Then after Charlie it becomes a a gross green , and the music becomes minor. Both can mean sadness, loneliness, emptiness. What's interesting about this movie is it's a "happy ending ". The music becomes major, the lights become warm, Charlie is alive , their king is home. I think this the most interesting part in my opinion (:

    I liked this film. Toni Collette was awesome. I've been a fan since she was in Muriel's Wedding.

    Many people miss things that happens in the end if your screen is too dark. I loved the end.
