That happened to me too and you're right the fanbase is terrible, I like the Sonic series. But I remember seeing these videos where Cream is getting steroids to get muscular, and seeing a video (as of Sonic Volume 5) where Dr. Eggman exposes his naked body in front of sonic, those parts were cringy and horrendous.

That still confuses me.
I'm not a purist, at least not in the way that the vocal minority spoken about in this video are like anyways, but I've always prefered the name Robotnik to Eggman because it sounds more menacing.
I do like his new design though, but also I still prefer the 2d games (classic and modern) over the 3d games.
I'm in two schools of thought whether or not he should be played as a straight up evil tyrant that would give Hitler knightmares or as a loveable comedic foil, because I'm fond of both versions, albeit the former over the latter...
I thought Robotnik was a previous villain in like the 2d games and Eggman was the one in the 3D games. I have no evidence to back this up, and I don’t like Sonic all that much anymore, so I know I’m gonna get shit for this. I also forgot how or why I thought this

@@PerfectGamerRBLX I think team sonic racing is good but I'm not looking for a racing game variant or a 2d game but the 3d sonic game done well. Generations and Colours are the most recent examples but it ends there. I know they can do it, I just want to see it happen.
The problem with the Sonic community is the complete disconnect between fans with one another and fans with the developers, making it incredibly difficult to please at least the vast majority of the fan base.
Let's look at Mario, Pokemon and Zelda for examples - there is a base formula within those games, yeah they put out crappy games every now and then, but I don't think any of it compares to the lack of quality coming from Sonic.
I love Sonic - but the franchise needs to stop being all over the place. They try to over complicate the games and as it stands now, I don't even think Sonic has a solid continuity.
With that being said, I hope one of my favourite childhood franchises gets its act together.
Too bad the Sonic movie has to disturb the peace.

I don't know why anyone takes the actions of someone who for real does not have a fully-functioning brain, and assumes that behavior is how normal fans act. But, given how people act on the internet, maybe more people would act like that irl if there were no consequences there either.

I enjoyed it when I was a kid. I remember watching it way back when Jetix was still running. Looking back, it really wasn't good, but the nostalgia balances it out.

Honestly I see it more as a divide in the fandom. Cringy ass sonic fanfics are still god damn everywhere, but if you stick with people who are into the Sonic Amateur Game's Expo (SAGE), you'll have a great time.
Honestly, I've grown sort of a grudging respect for the Sonic fanbase since Mania and being exposed to some of the ROM hacks they've made. The love these crazy bastards put into their work is frankly incredible sometimes, and when contrasted against the constantly fumbling stupidity of Sega, they shine even brighter.

I had one time at Comic Con where I had worn my Sonic X hat and my classic Sonic shirt, carried around a phone with Shadow and Rouge charms that I had modified into cell phone charms, and was overall very much a visible Sonic fan.
This odd guy approached me, about my age, having seen me in my garb, and struck up a conversation while I was waiting for a chance to pick up some comics from the Archie comics booth. This guy, I forgot his name, but he starts telling me about this fan project idea he had which was intended to be a sort of "revival" for Sonic SatAM, and how he was going to approach various people at the convention to see if he could get some sort of approval to use certain characters and properties.
After about ten minutes of listening to him rattle on and on about how the modern games (this was before Sonic Generations was out) was subpar and ultimately poisoning the franchise and that we needed to get back to basics, I finally had enough of this and said loudly:
"Dude, lighten UP!"
Luck have it, Ian Flynn is right behind me at the table in the Archie booth, and I hear a collective snort of amusement from the other attendees at the booth.
I should note that by that particular event, I had already been to Comic Con several years in a row, and made it a regular habit to stop by the Archie booth, chat with the guys in charge, and toss a couple of ideas out there that I thought would be fun to hear thier opinions of, which was always fun.
This guy, he just looks at me a bit stunned.
"I actually happened to LIKE Sonic 06." I add, which was true, in fact, I was bit known in a small circle of the fandom for being one of the more enthusiastic fans of that entry, enough so that it baffled many as to how I could have liked that game.
Long story short, Mr. Flynn and his colleagues were amused enough at my reaction to this guy that I got an extra comic, free of charge, and signed.
I should also note that I had spent the last three years before then asking them if they had any plans for a Mephiles the Dark cameo, and seeing a cameo of him later on saying "Dude, that guy needs to lighten up..." made me wonder if that was a shout out to that one incident. XD

I liked Sonic 06 more than Sonic Unleashed, honestly. The only real issues I had with that game were the glitches and the long loading times.

Same here. Sonic 06 is definitely not the best game ever, but it's certainly not the worst. Action 52 and Big Rigs Over The Road Racing are tied for that position.
And that in my experience and in my opinion is what leads to toxic fanbases. People in the famdom taking things way to seriously like the guy you were talking about. But given that the nature of a famdom is a collective group of people with a deeper than average interest in a thing any famdom is going to end up with those who take things too seriously and are a bit too obsessed. This is especially true for larger fandoms as the larger the famdom, the more of the more obsessive and more extreme fans said famdom will get. Though this isn't always the case as there are smaller fandoms with a large amount of obsessive fans and large ones that have a majority of pretty laxed and level headed folks in there ranks and obessives are very rare. Point is any fanbase can become toxic and it's through no fault of anyone nor does it mean that all fans in said fandom are toxic pos.

Sonic fans are worse
As a massive Sonic fan since I was very little, I seriously give Sega credit for listening to its fanbase so much and implementing their ideas and suggestions in new games. Sure they often may not be well executed(hell look at Sonic Forces, they literally gave the fans what they've wanted for ages even though it could have been a lot better), but honestly I believe most of the problem lies in the fanbase itself. The fans simply don't know what they want! All they do is fucking whine and complain just for the sake of complaining. "I want Sonic to be 2D again!", then Sega releases the advance series and they go "Oh but now they are trying sooo hard to pander to us. I want something NEW from Sonic.", and so on. Hell do you know why Shadow the Hedgehog happened?! It was because the FANS were sending letters to Sega asking for a game where Sonic used a gun. Then when they did exactly that the fans were outraged because "Oh no, Sonic is ruined!"
I seriously feel really bad for Sonic Team sometimes for having to deal with such bullshit, they really deserve more credit than people give them. One of the main reasons I enjoy Sonic more than Mario, for example, is that instead of treating Sonic like a brand and sticking to the exact same formula over and over again for a game(princess Peach gets kidnapped, Mario has to save her) they actually take risks and try lots of new, original ideas. So much that now they have a massive variety of interesting characters and universes for the fanbase to enjoy, and the only time they attempted to follow a Mario formula(with Sonic 06) it got such a backlash that its damage is still felt today, over ten years later.
I'm not sure if I get the point you're trying to make, you're talking to me as if I wasn't part of the fanbase myself. I'm not saying I don't think the fanbase is mostly great, I'm just saying there's a big part of it that is downright obnoxious with their negativity. As a fan who gets involved in the fandom often, this kind of behavior doesn't seem 1% in the slightest. That's literally everywhere whenever I browse the fandom. It's crawling with this sort of negativity and people constantly complaining about Sega's every move. Hell take the Sonic Boom game as example, not only was a lot of the fanbase making a storm over the "crime" of Sonic having blue arms, but the toxicity in the community was overwhelming after that game came out and the fans wouldn't stop trashing Sega for it... while completely overlooking the fact that Sonic Boom wasn't even made by the Sonic Team themselves ¬¬. Sure the game was terrible, but it was obviously only a spin-off game made for the TV Show and not related to the main Sonic franchise at all. Does that matter though? Of course not! People are too busy blindly comparing that to friggin' Sonic 06 as if it was anywhere as outrageous.
Lily Anders actually that’s a huge misconception. The TV show, as well as the comics, were made to promote the video games. I have no idea as to where people got the idea it was the other way around. It’s always been that way as Sonic makes more profits from his game than anything else. The Boom comics even say at the top of the cover “based on the hit game” not TV show.

What I meant to say was that it might as well be seen as a spin-off game made after a TV Show(since those are never good) given how the Boom series is a completely different entity from the main Sonic franchise. If you’ve been to places like the sonic amino on the Amino app, they are THE nicest fucking sonic fans you will ever meet, but that’s just my experience, yours may not be like mine. Anyway, I digress, my point is that the portion your talking about is small, it may not be as small as 1%, but it’s still small compared to the entire fandom.
While I always will be a fan of the amazing blue blur, the fandom in my opinion is just flat-out tiring and draining. I had to decrease my involvement in the fandom after Sonic Boom came out because my brain was starting to explode from all the craziness. My opinions got me attacked quite a lot of times too -_-

You might be onto something about that whole bias thing. I'll quote another comment I made here. There is a very good explanation as to why people hate the sonic fandom, and it isn't the porn.

Yeah, it never stopped. If someone tries to criticize a sonic game they get fucking crucified by the fandom. And there is no point in trying to argue with them, they ignore any valid criticism and accuse you of being a hater or an elitist. Never mind how out of place Sonic looks in his own games anymore with all these Final Fantasy-esque characters. Never mind the glitches that plague some of the games or ports. Never mind that a good chunk of fans didn't like literally half of the Werehog game. Never mind how Forces pandered so hard it was honestly insulting. Never mind the ridiculous tone-shift that these games suffer for trying to have a by-the-book RPG story with a blue hedgehog that couldn't give less of a fuck as the protagonist (Excuse me for not being able to take the world-ending plot seriously when the protagonist certainly won't). Never mind the basic story-telling mistakes you would typically only find in a bad fanfic. Never mind *BIG THE CAT!* To these people, those don't count. If a Sonic game has a flaw, their argument against it is literally to ignore the problems and pretend they don't exist.
Again, not joking in the slightest. They will honestly say to ignore *half the game* and think that is a perfectly good reason as to why a broken mess still deserves 10/10. And when the rare game that even they won't defend comes out (06, but I've seen a rare few try to claim that *that* game is somehow good), they blame the fans. Yeah, get you some of that. Sega can do no wrong, it is those damn dirty elitists' fault! Elitists are the sonic fandom's boogieman. I've never seen one, but the "Loyalists" won't shut up about them!

I think I have an idea to why Sonic elitism exists.
Take a look at Mario. He gave us Super Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, Odyssey. Why is it his fans aren't mad to the point that they're screaming for more 2D Mario games or Mario back when he was on the NES or SNES? Because Nintendo not only knew how to make Mario work in a 3D environment (his games were successful) but they took care in keeping him with the times while not diverging off to what made Mario, Mario.
Sonic Adventure was Sonic's first serious 3D attempt. However, the world of Sonic was changed from that point on. It became more story driven, Sonic had dialog, he had to participate in a human overworld and play through fairly human-like environments. Sonic Adventure was solid, but it wasn't perfect. Hell, the cut-scenes today are subject to internet memery these days.
What I thought made the Genesis Sonic games work was that it had characteristic, surreal levels that resonated this 90s touch unique to Sonic's own brand, was driven by minimal to no story, and most notably, Sonic kept his mouth shut. I don't think it was entirely the 2D aspect that fans wanted so badly.
Mario ALWAYS worked with minimal to no dialog that is relevant to the story and story is kept to its bare essentials. Mario was timeless, nobody outgrew Mario because. Sonic today (besides Mania) puts so much emphasis on character building and story. The dialog didn't always work, whether we weren't the right audience (too old?) - perhaps feeling like it became cringy (and frickin hell it was in '06 - Did you know there was a mission that Sonic had to pick his lover - between Amy and a human princess?)
Dude you're a complete idiot. Sonic series had character building & story even in the Classic Days, replay Sonic CD & 3K. You see Amy getting kidnapped by Metal Sonic who takes her to the future once you get to Collision Chaos. You don't remember Knuckles getting electricuted & deciding to help Sonic stop Eggman Robotnik to get the Master Emerald back after that? Adventure was only the natural evolution of storytelling that had been improving in the series since Sonic 1. The only aspect you got right was that Sonic kept his mouth shut rather than make the bad jokes he started cracking in Colors.
It was morons who didn't understand the series wanting to do away with the story & excellent cast of characters that resulted in the worst decade of Sonic's Career starting in 2010. Roger Craig Smith was a terrible fit for Sonic's VA only really working for Boom Sonic. Instead of awesome stories like we used to get, we would get bad joke stories from Pontac & Graff because they had no knowledge of the series at all when they were hired. It was people who didn't give a dam about story that made Sega & Sonic Team hire those talentless writers to begin with for Colors onward.
Sonic 06 wasn't half as cringey as the things Roger Craig Smith says in Colors. The only time Sonic was ever a dumb joke character was in that 1 DiC Cartoon prior to Sonic Colors. In the Adventure Duology Sonic talked although he wasn't doing so excessively for no reason like he does in the 2010s. Sonic was supposed to be cool, although the 2010s decade forgot that & made him into a cringefest all to please people who were outsiders to the series!
This video already covered it well. Sonic means different things to different people of different groups and generations. There's so many cartoons, comics and games that are very different from each other creating disparate groups of fans that don't agree on what's best for the franchise because they only want what they like about it.
Mario is Mario. Yeah the gameplay evolved over time, but there's nothing really complicated about Mario. There aren't any giant schisms or arguments about characterization. It's a completely different beast. At the same time I'd argue Mario's fandom isn't quite as massive or passionate as Sonic's even though the Mario games themselves are more popular.

And yes, maybe some products are really different from others, but with the mainline games they always had things in common. If what You say is true, How can You explain the fact that Dreamcast era fans put Sonic Generations, a modern Game as INE of they're favorites? The same can be sayd about that Game and the classicist. You see, people always Say that all the Games try different things, but all of the follow a basic rule and that one is that in a Sonic Game you don't "go fast" You earn speed. That rule even applies to the mech stages in Sonic Adventure 2.
And as we sayd in comments earlier, Classic games aren't that different to begin with.
Curious guy may be because sonic generations is a good game? Not every dreamcast can has the same steeple mindset that modern is bad. And on the other point, it's not just the gameplay used, it's the objective:
In the classic games, sonic is pretty self explanatory, tails can fly, and knuckles is slower than both but can glide. They retain most of these abilities later on, but the difference is that the classic games always had two objectives; get to the end of the stage, and smash eggmans robots. And the abilities each character has doesn't contradict that rule. Tails and knuckles can get to places sonic could only dream of, And that can lead to shortcuts. In the adventure games, however, knuckles omits getting to the end of a stage for a scavenger type of gameplay. And tails in adventure 2 omits flying entirely for a mech. The objective is still the same, but you can't go anywhere near as fast as sonic and have to stick with more platforming and combat. And those aren't the only ones. Big and Amy have it rough in those areas too. That is the difference. While you can supposedly gain speed, it's not always about that and if it is, it's a stark contrast to sonic most of the time.

I had a friend who was part of the Sonic fandom. She did the normal stuff, make OC’s, write fanfics, draw fanart, and read comics. One day, she showed me some OC’s and some art of them. I told her that she should try to not use as bright of colors and add some weaknesses to some Mary Sues. She yelled at me and tried to punch me before running away.
Next week, I got called to my school’s office. When I arrived, I saw my mother crying, two cops next to the door, and a man who immediately started to scream at me (Who I later found out was her father.) Well, apparently the girl had told her father that I had beat her, raped her, stolen her phone, and had threatened to kill her and her family because I criticized her work.
Thankfully, I was able to clear up the charges. I don’t have any classes with her, thankfully, so I don’t have to deal with her lies anymore.
Why would she call the police when she didn't have any evidence to prove that you did those things?
I think this story should be at the end of the next video, because it shows what happens when someone offered constructive criticism and the person receiving it can't take it and perceive it as an attack on them. Since they see it as a personal attack it makes them feel justified to lie and try to ruin the other person who was just helping.

Many of the sins committed by the toxic side include defending or overtrashing bad sonic games, making weird and unoriginal ocs', starting the SonAmy vs SonAlly flame wars, stating that "SONIC IS REALLY POWERFULL,HE CAN BEAT GOKU AND SUPERMAN!!!", Shipping themselves with sonic characters and making pornography of them (which is beastiality as many of the characters are non-human animals), creating bizarre fan stories, overrating Sonic X till no end, not handling opinions, and the list goes on.

I didn't know that parts of the fandom could be so toxic until I saw the vitriol that HoopsandHipHop got for defending Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee. He wasn't telling people how to think, just explaining why he thought some of the things people were making huge issues about weren't that big a deal and encouraging people not to make judgments until the game was actually released. The result of his rational and respectful videos was hateful whiners shouting that he was wrong, he just didn't understand anything, he was sucking up to the company, etc. I don't know how bad it got since I stopped reading after a while in disgust, but it's sad that such a cool guy got hate for, well, not expressing hate. By the way, I have mixed feelings about LGPE from what I've seen, so I'm not telling people what to think either; I'm just saying Hoops did not deserve the hate he got. I love Pokemon and am irritated that there are fanatics who start drama over nothing.

Hatedoms definitely are what ruin the experience for so many series and community. They keep whining that it makes them look like the big part of the community, even though they are not....
Star Wars 1-3 are the biggest example of a hatedom derailing a good franchise. When the Star Wars sequel trilogy came out people were literally lined up around the block to see the movie and they were some of the first movies i can remember where people i knew went to see it in theaters multiple times. then in the late 2000's/early 2010's people started going back and critizicisng it more and more, with the hate only gaining momentum as time went on. In the beginning 90% of the criticism was levied at Jar-Jar and a few corny lines and lame plot points, but for the 5 years or so people have retroactivly acting like they're horrible movies, even if they're the same people who saw it in theaters 2 or 3 times with their friends. They're a low point in the star wars theatrical franchise, but they were still great movies for the time and it's only since the CGI has become dated that people have grown to loathe the series.

I love the characters, the some of stories such as Sonic Battle's one, I enjoy plenty of the games, the Advance Trilogy being my favorite. I enjoy seeing cool fan animations such as Sasso Studios' videos and even read a good fanfiction every now and then, not EVERY one is bad like everyone says. I even like coming up with my own ideas and concepts surrounding the franchise myself and I like to make up my own stories for the characters.
Favorite characters are Sonic, Tails, Cream, Shadow, Eggman, Amy (kinda), Blaze & Knuckles

Really, i don't see the sonic fandom any different.
Some fandoms can have a more toxic side than others. For example the sonic fanbase is characterized for having a big toxic side while a small healthy side. Mario is characterized for having a small toxic side but a big healthy side. While I do agree that every fandom has its dark side, you have to understand that many times that dark side can come in all shapes, sizes and make some or various sins.
I think some of the most annoying recently, were the Classic Sonic purists. It's good if you like Classic over Modern, but there is that kind of people (like ikagura) that says "Modern Sonic should die" or only because Sonic Forces failed compared to Mania, they want all the games to be Classic Sonic now, despite the fact Unleashed (nowadays), Colors, Generations and All Star Racing series were well received.
Seriously like one day i said some things i didnt like about Mania respectfully and giving my opinión and what did i get? I got bashed and they kept saying me that the game was perfect and my opinion invalid. Obviously not all Classic fans are like that because i found nice people but i also found a lot of that people that doesnt respect opinions and want 3D Sonic dead.

Ive been dealing with this subject as of late. I find this argument to be as volitile as the sjw left vs the alt right. I was obsessed with the Sonic fandom back in middle school thanks to one of my friends who I saw drawing Sonic OCs all the time. The thing is I am the type of person that enjoys more the lore and story than anything else, and when I saw there wasn't that much on the video games, I turn to the comics. I spent so much time reading the SonicArchie comics on UA-cam and I spent hours on the wiki learning about all the characters (since there's so many of them).
Eventually I wasn't as active on the fandom anymore, especially after I left Deviantart. I didn't return to the fandom until winter of 2017 when I found out the comic was cancelled and I finally could read the comic on its entirety without problem (reminder that the comic has ran for around 20 years). So I did, during my winter break I read over the 300+ issue. After that I was back at it again drawing Sonic characters and reading the amazing fan comics that people created, particularly Evan Stanley's work (who was able to work in the Sonic Archie comics for a while).
Even with the cancelation of the comic and the horrible fate of a lot of my favorite characters from the comic by the hands of Ken Penders (who is just as infamous as Chris in the comic community). I'm still part of the fandom and their projects that have being going on for years now. I'm excited for the new comic by the IDW. As well to see the fans finally growing up into adults and working for the Sonic games. That's the reason why we got two Sonic games last year (to appease old and new Sonic fans, and who is better at that than old fands), and old time favorite characters are coming back for future games.
Noted I do have friends who hate Sonic games and it's fandom becuase it's "cringy", and yes I won't deny it can be cringy at times, but that hasn't stopped me. It's just fun to draw the characters, and to see what crazy stuff happen to the blue blur in the comics. Not to mention I actually have met people becuase of the fandom, and I'm currently working to get into one of it's many fan projects.

It's not really the matter of the weird porn/fetish "art" that gives the fanbase it's awful reputation. It's part of it, but it's not the full picture. It's a combination of a number of things;
1. Chris Chan and other infamous Sonic fans - I don't think I need to reiterate what you said in the video.
2. the Sonic Defense Squad - Whenever a popular UA-camr makes a video where they criticize a Sonic game, read through the comments, you'll usually see more people crying for the defamation of said UA-camr for daring to criticize a Sonic game. When the huge hatedom around Sonic began to form, many Sonic fans began to feel overwhelmed by the hate that the series was getting, and began to become overly defensive, not unlike how many Nintendo fans started acting when the "mainstream" gaming audience started labeling Nintendo games as "only for little kids", or when the Wii U flopped and fans had to defend the console to self-validate their purchasing of it.
3. the Sonic series's own bad image - Sonic is seen by the general consensus to be a bad series by many people. Games like Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 06, and Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric display this perfectly.
4. the porn - it does exist, it's very common, and just because you don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist or isn't common.
5. Terrible OCs and recolors - It's practically a meme at this point how many cringe worthy Sonic OCs are out there. It's to a point where people have made a game of going on Google Images and searching (your name here) the Hedgehog. Many of the fandoms considered "bad" and "cancerous" are considered as such for this exact same reason. The Sonic fandom was just the first to popularize it.
6. The long dead console war between SEGA and Nintendo - Even though SEGA went 3rd party almost 20 years ago, people still argue over Mario and Sonic and which one is superior. I'm not kidding.
7. Typical overly obsessive fandom stuff - shippers, kids acting like kids, bad fan art, some fans being waaay to into the series, the porn side could technically fit in here, but there are enough "toxic" fandoms without that porn element that it is unique enough to stand out from here.
At this point now, the Sonic fandom is kind of a mess. Fans arguing with haters, Classic Sonic purists, Adventure game purists, and Boost game purists all arguing with each other, People who like the old "Archie Sonic" canon, those who like the Japanese classic Sonic canon, those who like the modern Sonic era canon all arguing, Boost fans arguing with boost fans over the quality Sonic Forces, Boost fans arguing over Sonic Colors's quality, classic Sonic fans arguing over Sonic CD's quality, this list goes on and on with the current and constant conflicts within the community. This is why people say that the Sonic fandom can never be pleased, and it's quickly becoming one of the main reasons people consider the fandom bad.

Which is in fact not true as it targets all ages, it just isn't your everyday edgy fps that rips off PUBG, ratchet and clank, TF2, L4D2 and CSGO at the same time while making up a random name that makes absolutely no sense and an overpowered gimmick that is at the same time weak if used correctly (which means you must exploit to win). God i hate fortnite.

The Sonic fandom is... strange. But regardless, tall or short, brown or green, classic, adventure or boost, Sonic is Sonic to me and I'll always be a fan. I have my preferences and opinions are my own and I respect others opinions (as long as they make logical sense if not then I just leave them alone) even if they differ to mine. The fandom isn't perfect and definitely needs improving but all hope is not lost. I don't think the fandom will EVER be perfect but such can be said about anything in general. But hey, it could be worse.

I don't hate the Fandom. But I do have some bad experiences with it. Most notably, just about any time you dare critique even the smallest little thing in a Sonic game or the 2 live action Sonic movies, they lose their shit. For me it's the lack of the ability to take critiques and criticism. No series is perfect. Sonic is no exception.
I am a huge fan of’Sonic and I totally understand you. In a video about Sonic X, I said on a commentary that I like this animated series but that is not my favorite (I’d rather Sonic SATAM). At a moment, I said that I thought the last season with the Metarex is boring and I think the first seasons were better… A girl fan of the show went CRAZY, she insults me and threatens me, she wanted to punch me in the face… I couldn’t believe my eyes… IT’S JUST A CARTOON! She acted like I have insulted a member of her family! And I was very respectful of the fans of Sonic X, I just shared my opinion, that’s all. I understand that she wanted to explain why she loves the last season of Sonic X but she didn’t need to be so mean with me. I also left a French Discord because most of the fans over there were complaining all the time about the video games, the comics, the movies, the cartoons… I was wondering « Did they really like Sonic? » I don’t think that Sonic fandom is the worst of all, certainly not. Shadow is a pretty good character, actually, and not as edgy as you may think. The Shadow the Hedgehog game just got the character wrong.
He's gotten less edgy and more proper as time goes on... I mean He's got a job at the sonic equivalence of the CIA now and he act more like an investigator would. I know this was released a while ago, but I thought I'd share something real quick...
I believed the lie that Sonic was one of the worst fandoms out there. I wouldn't tell people I played the games, read the comics, or wrote fanfiction on the series because I thought I would get shunned. It wasn't until I started talking and communicating with other Sonic fans that I realized for myself how overblown the fandom was. I've met so many nice people in this fandom and I don't think I've ever encountered a toxic person. Funny enough, I encounter far more toxicity in a Minecraft fandom than I ever have in the Sonic fandom. And I'm not even in that MC fandom!

Is that you only encountered members of the small, healthy side of the fandom. The Sonic fandom is characterized to have a big unhealthy portion. And various of the sins they have made include either defending or over trashing on bad Sonic games, shipping wars, the infamous Sonic OCs, making weird and terrible fanfictions, insert ships with the characters (which is beastiality as many Sonic characters are non-human animals), starting flame wars with Mario fans, addiction to Sonic porno and fetishes (once again, this is beastiality as many Sonic characters are non-human animals), not acknowledging that modern Sonic is having various problems, and don't get me started on Chris Chan.
Also, this video is overrated. RPG did made some mistakes within some of his arguments.
But overall yes, the Sonic fandom does have healthy side, is just that its overshadowed by the giant toxic side.
Actually the complaints of elitists about Sonic 4 were genuine. The physics were broken, the soundtrack was terrible, and many zones especially from Episode 1 were rehashed.
The problem was that, at the time of that trailers release, it almost felt like everyone was putting all of the blame purely on Sonic's design, and almost acting as if the simple inclusion of Sonic's old design would've somehow made the entire game better. And of course they were unfairly judging it long before they'd even given it a chance!
I was in the StH fandom on DeviantART between roughly 2003 and 2008, and those were honestly the nicest people I've ever met online. People would just stumble across your page and leave you a comment like "hey cool art! Wanna be friends?" And then you would have a genuine friend who you talked to everyday for the next few years. It was so wholesome. There was never any unpleasantness, the closest thing to it was people being blunt or awkward, but that was very obviously bc we were all autistic kids lol. I was 11 when I joined, and around 16 when I drifted away from it. I had a massive group of friends, some of whom I'd made during my first few days on dA and had stayed friends with all that time. It was a wonderful community to be a part of.
I remember the purists but they were all much older than me and I had never played a sonic game prior to Sonic Heroes, which was actually a very well loved and recieved game by the younger people in the community - everyone loved that game and it was a massive number of people's introduction into the fandom. It was the first Sonic renaissance, but it must have been annoying for the older fans to have their small community flooded by pre-teens and teenagers. I can see why they were the way they were. I always thought they were weird and didn't know what they were talking about.
I personally loved Shadow the Hedgehog (the game), but everyone in the dA community memed it. I think we all quietly enjoyed it, but openly pretended we thought it was cringe. Shadow was almost everyone's favourite character in the franchise, from memory the main issue everyone had with it was the gun thing and that it was trying to hard, plus it was very jarring to see a dark StH game.
Also I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've seen Sonic rule 34 in my life. You p muvh have to go looking for that stuff, it's not just everywhere lol.
All in all, good fandom. One of the best. I'm super happy to see it having a second renaissance and a bunch of new autistic people going down the StH special interest rabbit hole. I think it's really cool and I hope that it enables Sonic Team to put out some good games in the coming years.
The Akai Dalia drama was actually blown way out of proportion by Sonic 93 and the Princess Elizabeth drama, while Erin did do inexcusable things, it was heavily one sided and she has long since changed. I don't know anything about Princess Elizabeth, but Akai/Cobalt's OC was never a Mary Sue, Sonic 93 just called her that because she was dating both Sonic and Shadow at the time the fact that Sonic often protected her when she didn't have her weapon equipped which is a normal thing any sane individual would do, and she kept comparing her to Amy just because they're the same gender and species and she kept mistaking Jane's red fur for a nonexistent color of pink.

Honestly, I am happy you gave the sonic fandom a fair chance rather than just parroting what everyone else says about it. I am no longer a sonic fan, but it's nice to get another perspective rather than the same old "SONIC FANS ARE BAD BECAUSE CHRIS CHAN!" type video.
Also I agree that Kirby is an awesome series. If it wasn't for Nightmare in Dreamland, I might have never gotten into playing video games.

A fandom I’ve been a member of for about 10 years.
I’ve seen a lot of crazy parts in this fandom. Mainly online, but it was still crazy.
I was admittedly part of the cringe myself at one point. When I was 15, that was the peak of my obsessive fangirl personality. I used to write crossover fan fiction between Sonic and Divergent. Looking back on it, I regret how I was. I was quite... Let’s just say cringy as hell.
I’m still a part of the Sonic fandom to this day. And what shocks me the most is how people use the condition of autism to describe us. I know I’m not helping the case by actually being autistic myself, but I am always disgusted by the use of this word to describe us. I personally take offence to it, but I know better than to lash out... even though I always feel like lashing to get their attention.
Overall, what I’m trying to say is, being an insider of the Sonic fandom can be rough. When you’re surrounded by the craziness that happens, when you are generalised as something you may or may not be, because of the actions of others...
I can see why people leave this fandom in fear, shame, and/or embarrassment. I have felt like doing so at many points, but to do so would be to give in to the hate. I’m honestly proud to be a Sonic fangirl, and just a fangirl in general. Because there actually are people who are understanding.

Of all the bad things that I experienced in the Sonic Fanbase, the worst one for me was the ship-wars on Deviantart. And granted, Ship-Wars aren’t exclusive to Sonic, but the Sonamy-Sonally shipwar was one I was apart of and blindly fought in. I supported Sonally and Sally Acorn because I loved SatAM and the comics, and Amy Rose/Sonamy fans were assholes and the enemy.
All the constant back and forth about Amy being an annoying brat who only thought of Sonic and nothing else and Sally being a non-canon, stuck-up bitch who slapped Sonic because she was selfish was the norm. There was the group’s dedicated to hating one of the characters and ships, poorly drawn fan art of one killing the other, and those damn “girl-next-door” videos on UA-cam that portrayed one as a helpless victim and the other as a superstar. It was war propaganda for children and it’s hilarious to think about it, all these years later.
And then, one day, something clicked in my head. I thought about how Amy and Sally interacted in the comics, where they were good friends, and I realized how dumb all this arguing over who was better was. I realized that I didn’t even really hate Amy, I was more upset at her fans and their behavior that had angered me. It also made me realize how wrong I was about these ships, and how there were jerks on both sides. So I took my shit and pretty much left deviant-art for good. That whole experience made me never want to ship again, and I barely ship anymore because of that.
All that aside, it is thanks to the Sonic fandom that I became a fan of many content creators, played fun fangames and romhacks through the years, and met people who are still my close friends to this very day.

I think part of Sonic's reputation for bad OCs come from the fact that it sufferers for "Sailor Earth" syndrome. There's a "template" that makes it really easy to make uninspired Sonic characters. Steven Universe and Danganronpa have the same problem.
Mlp and Homestuck also have similar issues though it a lot worse back in 2013, it's quite interesting seeing the differences in all these fandoms now vs at the beginning
Yes, I agree, but it does not affect any shows that I watch. I don't make OCs, so I don't care if there is an easy template. I tend to stay away from fandoms and just enjoy the content, lol.
The “Worst Fandom” also made some of the best remasters of old games and made one of the best games that’s both easy and challenging.

You know what's funny? From what I hear, it was the fans that caused Shadow to use a gun. Because they wanted Sonic to use a gun, but SEGA decided that it just wasn't him. Also, there was that "boycott" of Sonic 4, with people saying to buy copies of Sonic 1 instead, solely because Sonic had his modern design instead of his classic design.
And Chris? There are a few things, mainly his "one-man crusade" against Sonic Boom, simply because Sonic's arms are blue. He would often go into Best Buys and GameStops and slip in edited covers that say something along the lines of "Boycott this game. Sonic's arms are not blue." Not to mention he would deface any Sonic Boom stand and he once maced a GameStop employee. Luckily, most of the mace got on his shirt, and the man didn't even do anything. He just happened to be near Chris and Chris maced him.
I thought it was hilarious how he demanded the employees don't report the assault. I hope they did.

Even western fans or Japanese fans, the reason why I say Japanese fans because around that time there was poll going around to ask sonic fans to sonic which character you want in its own video game and its obvious who won, shadow. There was talks that people wanted more shooting type aspects in the games aswell they wanted edginess, sega being smart did not change choose sonic for obvious reasons they chose shadow. This is information a lot of people like to kick under the rug, maybe its because it's their fault the game got made in the first place, but make no mistake the game was made because fans wanted it whether it was a small handleful but you have to really dig to prove it =/

I have heard about that, but ultimately it is Sega's fault for making such a game. Not that I think it was uncalled for, but there were better characters to use for a shooting game. Fang, Gamma, Omega, Eggman.. all would have been better than Shadow, if the CoD trend-chasing game needed to be made at all.

I have a "friend" who believes that the Sonic Fandom is only full of cringey ocs and fanart, so when they found out that I really liked Sonic, they poked fun at me constantly. I just went with it for a while because I know that there is some of that cringey stuff, but then again, doesn't every fandom have cringey things in it? Anyway, it eventually got to a point where I started to feel like a lesser person simply because I was a Sonic fan. I felt like I was just really annoying to all my friends whenever I talked about it. I even made my own oc because I really like designing characters and I would poke fun at myself saying "Wow, look I have a Sonic oc because I'm trash!" I still feel like this a little and I still have feelings that I am lesser for being a Sonic fan. But it has gotten better. One of my friends who initially didn't really care about Sonic began to show some interest. This friend also never judged me for being a Sonic fan and actually wanted to draw my oc. I am so happy that you made this video because so many people only look at the bad things in this fandom. It's nice to see someone actually show that this fandom is not a giant pile of cringe and trash, that there are actually nice people. And especially with the ocs because I am tired of everyone saying "All Sonic OCS are bad!" because I have seen plenty that are amazing. Again, thank you for making this video.

Okay, so I have a kinda funny story about a delusional guy in the Sonic fandom.
I'm an avid user of Sonic Amino, and I've met awesome people there, I've had an awesome time really, but this one time I made a post about my Sonic Heroes manual, which had the age of Sonic wrong. The manual said that Sonic was 8, when in the original, he was 15. I made a post about it and a lot of people were commenting about how funny it was and about their own manuals with printing errors, but this one guy started saying that Sonic was 18. I just replied with his official age and a photo of the original manual, and he started saying how Sonic HAD to be 18 because he was 18 and sending threats to the other people that were trying to calm him down. He really thought he was Sonic. It was... hilarious to say the least.
He eventually stopped replying after a couple of days.

I use to be a big fan of Sonic, I even had an OC named Merge. But after Sonic 06 came out and I was barred from the rest of the game because of my lacking skill to beat the first level, and my laptops repeated factory resetting losing all of my fan made art, I gave up on the whole series.
