Chris is flawless, and a genius on clay, what a joy to watch ,shame that there isn't that level of class today

The French crowd was delighted by the new and fresh style of Sabatini. So much so, that when there came a questionable call, Chris with all possible decorum went to the empire to request a line check for the ball mark. The crowd actually booed her! I'll bet that was the first and last time Evert got that treatment. She was obviously surprised. I think it just made her more determined in that second set.

A great study in clay court contrasts, Gabby with lots of looping spin, long steps, big swings and Chris with hard flat strokes, straight backswings and small rapid steps. Old school versus modern.

Great match from Evert, Sabatini was playing well.

Notice even at this tender an age, Sabatini has a great sense of where to defend up at net. She really anticipates well. She also is generating a ton of power off the ground. Not a lot of players could hit clean winners vs Evert on a clay court at the age of 16. the power comes at a price though. She is playing a very economically efficient opponent, who wastes no energy in step or swing. Evert into her mid 30's, won 6 of the first 7 meetings largely because young Gabby pooped out.

She is interesting in that people were so high on her potential, for a brief period people were even higher on her than Graf. Nobody would have imagined she would win only 1 slam. Her career wound up being a huge dissapointment vs early expectations. Maybe partly for the reasons you just said. She also never fixed that serve of hers. And her mental strength in the big moment was questionable too, especialy in comparision to sharks like Graf, Seles, and even Sanchez Vicario.

@@rolandgreen7484 Yet she was apparently the best of Graf's contemporaries. Not in the same league as Evert.

Chrissie called the French crowd "obnoxious" in her post-match interview with Ms. Carillo. That's putting it mildly!

Sabatini made the mistake of telling the media she was going to beat Evert in this match. If Evert hadn't let up a little in the first set, this match could have been 6-1,6-1. Also, Evert in her interview with Bud Collins after the final gave the young Steffi Graf a nod as a great champion in the making and saying the win over Graf gave her confidence to do well in this tournament.

It is the first time I'm hearing such a thing. Knowing how shy and introvert Sabatini was, it's hardly believable.

@@patrizioorru772 It's at the beginning of the interview Collins had before the actual match. He stated Sabatini's coach stated they both believed Sabatini would beat Evert because of the earlier match in Florida where Sabatini had pushed Evert really hard.

@@patrizioorru772 They played again after Family Circle at Amelia Island and the score was 6-1, 3-6,6-3 Evert, but Evert was worn out from the tough match with Sabatini and struggled with Kohde-Kilsh and then lost to Garrision, both players who usually gave her little trouble at this time. Carillo gave all the credit to Sabatini when Garrison won the match. Sabatini won a shot with the between the legs in the second set and rolled to a 6-1 set on Florida clay against Evert. Anyway, you are correct. Sabatini's coach at the time, Palto -something-I cannot remember, was the one who said that Sabatini believed it would be her day to beat Evert at Roland Garros. I did think she would win it someday, but as Evert said in the interview there was a young German named Graf whom Evert had beaten in the previous round who had great potential.
