It's the beginning of Graf's era in tennis. From 1987-96 she won 21 slams out of 36 ( insane). From March 1987 to June 1997 she never ranked below 2 (unbelievable). She is/was simply the goat.
@@Tenis2008 For your kind knowledge Graf leads their h2h (10-5). Even during Seles' peak (1991-93) it's Graf who lead their h2h (3-2). Seles never beat Graf on grass & carpet but Graf beat her on every surface. Maybe Seles was lucky because she started to win slam during Steffi's slump (remember her off court scandal due to her father). Otherwise Monica couldn't be no 1 so easily. She dominant the field not Graf.
@@jamesdavidkmoss Nobody really consider or few would consider Martina as goat which is sad. Now it's Steffi vs Serena for consensus then it's Martina, even few would ranked Margaret Court higher than Martina (because of her 24th slam). For me personally it's 1. Graf 2. Martina 3. Serena 4. Court 5. Evert
@@rajusaha855 I think they do,its just all we hear is on these patforms is same old thing about Graf,Williams and Court and yes they may have the numbers but what did they really bring to the women's game?
Nice to see a young Steffi Graf and Gabriela Sabitini compete on FO clay. Thanks for the highlights video! Now, it seems there was a comment about Steffi Graf hitting style as being ‘odd’. I was about to comment how ridiculous that statement was but after some reflection, here are my thoughts. Steffi, at an early age, was one if not the most gracefully athletic player. When I watched her early years, I did notice a difference when she played a few years later and a more notable difference when she changed to the Wilson 95. If you notice very carefully, her forehand had a more pronounce wind-up, circular in motion or as they call it a windmill (low to high back to low). When she matured, that stroke production was more refined, less windy, more compact drive. That’s why when I see her play in her teen years, I often think why is she hitting like that, why is her forehand power not the same compared to later years. Obviously she matured physically but it was more about her refined yet unique stroke forehand production and racquet technology. Same goes for her backhand slice which became less of a floaty slice due to how she hit her slice from low to high (a bit like a bird spreading its wings). Later years it would be a vicious backhand slice drive with more forward leaning stroke production. So, why did I say all of this. Yes it may have been ‘odd’ to the average viewer but there was a foundation in the early years as a player to develop the greatest forehand ever and best ever backhand slice. Kind of cool from ‘odd or different’ to two of the greatest tennis weapons ever!
@@joeyconvery2055 I would be careful when describing Steffi’s matches with Monica. If you are referring to ‘beat up’ as Steffi lost only winning a few games like 3-4 games only then that never happened. However, the reverse is true that Steffi won convincingly in straight set wins against Monica, with Monica only winning a few games. If you need help it’s the ‘89 and ‘92 Wimbledon matches with 6-0 6-1 and 6-2 6-1 respective scores. If you’re a Monica fan, just be careful because saying ‘beat up’ makes you sound uninformed and bias, which I’m sure you don’t want that label.
@@ytangel7263 In 1990, 16 year old Monica beat up Steffi at the Berlin Open final ...in straight sets..in front of Graf's home crowd. A month later, Monica beat up Steffi again at the French Open final in straight sets. Monica beat up Steffi pretty good. Poor Steffi. 😆
@@joeyconvery2055 Sure if you want to be basic, then yes Monica did beat up Steffi in those matches. But following your basic thinking, then Steffi beat up Monica more in their 10-5 H2H. However, I don’t perceive their rivalry that way. Monica was incredible and I personally wish her tragedy never happened. We, I mean unbiased fans, would have seen more awesome matches between those two tennis greats if their rivalry continued uninterrupted. Anything else? I rather discuss more sophisticated thinking but I leave that up to you.
@Max E I remember she was the favourite to win the 1991 French Open title as she had the best claycourt season that year out of all the top contenders. But she looked flat when she arrived to Paris. She barely survived her QF match against Novotna. And in her loss to Seles, she looked fine in the first set but once it got to 4-4, it was as if she stopped playing. I also wonder what became of her at the 1989 and 1990 French Open.
@Max E : Hello, If Sabatini had been born 15 or 20 years earlier, she would have lost in the same way, this time against Navratilova, lost against Chris Evert, lost against Hana Mandlikova, lost against Virginia Ruzici, lost against Mima Jausovec, lost against Billie Jean King, lost against Evonne Goolagong and lost against Margaret Court Because Gabriela Sabatini was a loser, she had a lower level than all these winners, champions, her legs were shaking and her stomach filled with butterflies and she had no mentality to win, as in this match she had everything to win from the top and collapsed under the enormous pressure and play of the Steffi Graf!!
@Max E : It doesn't matter, Sabatini would have lost as well!! She did not have the power or the strength with which one plays today, she was a placement player, not a power player, in any case, not the power that was given from the 2000's, even at the end of the 90's, she would have lost against Martina Hingis And how many times did Graff defeat Sabatini? 29 times, I'm sorry but Sabatini was a loser, and remember Sabatini was 0-11 against Graf in her 11 first matches!! the first 5 years
What a fabulous match. I wonder if Gaby would be gone to the next level sooner had she won this match. But just as their other clay court battle that year at Hilton Head, Graf was more able to seize an opportunity than Gaby.
You could always gauge Gabi's form by how well she moved her feet. Here at times, she's moving beautifully. But the same old problems that would haunt her throughout her career would come back. She couldn't finish off a lot of big matches.
