    For Redfoot's and Yellowfoot's, 60% of their diet should be fruit which is roughly the percent they consume in the wild and their GI tract is adapted to process the sugars in fruit.
    Arid species torts should never get fruit or if you can't resist, once, maybe twice a year. Their lower GI tract is simply not equipped to digest sugars (fructose, sucrose, etc.) and can cause them a number of health issues.

    u dont have to go all out crazy like this guy, but this is a REALLY awesome set up for tortoises.

    i have a red footed tortoise ,it's very picky and sometimes when i give her /him/it a cuttlebone it refuses to even take bite.What should i do??!!:(

    • @stickysponge
      @stickysponge 10 років тому +2

      I have read that tortoises will seek a cuttlebone once their body feels a calcium deficiency. The best thing you can do in this case is to leave the cuttlebone readily available every day until one day when your tortoise becomes curious enough or feels the need for calcium :)

    I am always looking to improve my sulcata's diet. He's too small to live outdoors yet, but I offer him grass and dandelion clippings. He's unfortunately spoiled and mostly ignores them in favor of the leafy greens I get from the grocery, which are a spring mix with all kinds of leafy green types in it. He won't touch kale, however, and isn't a big spinach fan.
    Aside that he also gets a spoonful of tortoise gel, which is a plant based food that mixes with warm water. He would eat nothing but gel if I offered him enough! It's supposed to be very healthy, but he gets runny if he's given too much.
    I also give him a sprinkle of tortoise pellets, for diversity, plus he loves them very much.
    Any advice for moving him more onto a natural grass-hay diet away from the store bought greens? Is it possible my grass isn't the right kind for him? It's normal Maryland grass field, which is a mix of several grasses plus bermuda.
    Aside that, he gets an occasional raspberry, which he loves, but just one or two, since he doesn't need that sugar.
    I hadn't realized until recently that hay was important to sulcatas, so I am picking some Timothy up at the pet store. Hopefully he likes it! He's a spoilt brat!

    • @mrwho3425
      @mrwho3425 7 років тому +1

      DeadlyChinchilla shouldn't have spoiled him

    • @DeadlyChinchilla
      @DeadlyChinchilla 7 років тому +1

      *****
      I've noticed that about kale as well. In a pinch he'll eat the Spring Mix from the grocery, there's just a little kale and spinach in it, but mostly other leafy greens. Unfortunately, though I personally love Maryland winters, it's not great for his diet. I'd love to get a small indoor pot garden going, grow some dandelions on my own, to keep his winter diet more natural and diverse. Leaf greens do very well in pots too.
      Where are you located? Have you gone through a winter yet? For now my guy is indoors only, since he's not yet a year old. But later I was thinking we could build a tortoise barn with a heat element, and he can live outside most of the year. With the right fence, of course. ^_^

    I will disagree with you, my Red Foot stayed in a 40 gal breeder until she got to bed and she loved it!! She very rarely ever tried to get out... And she had a healthy appetite and always ate even from the first day I got her. She didn't start stressing and not eating until I put her in a bigger enclosure

    Tortoise see trough tank and aquarium. they will keep on walking and try to walk trough the tank and will stress them out and when they are stress they won't eat. Use a big tub or Place wood at the bottom side of your tank. Don't use sand it can effect its eye and impacted. Try use hay or coco bark.

    I have a question; I have a little hermanni boettgeri,15 months old. I have been told that tortoises do not know the concept of glass, So I have bought a hard plastic terrarium with nets (other sides but the doors have forrest posters as a background) of the brand Exo Terra. In the beginning she was shy, but since 3-4 days ago she started to be very active, walking circles, climbing in the corners of the nets untill half way and fall but still eat, sleep.. Is that normal? :( Anyone?

      @@pannelchannelv4395 Kale is fine and good for the 20% of the desert tortoise that isn't grazing on weeds and grasses which is supposed to be almost 80% of their diet. Kale and red leaf lettuce do not bind calcium and stop it's absorbtion. Spinach, all other lettuces, and MANY healthy things like broccoli, cauliflower, beets are all calcium binder for tortoise and humans, only supposed to eat these items once or twice a week. All of us, pets and humans.
