  • 'Jerusalem' is a famous hymn and unofficial anthem of England, widely regarded for its patriotic and spiritual significance. The lyrics were penned by the renowned poet and painter William Blake in 1804 as part of a preface to his epic poem "Milton." The poem "Milton" focuses on themes of spirituality, social injustice, and the search for a utopian society.
The lyrics of "Jerusalem" evoke a strong sense of national pride and a yearning for a better, more just England. The opening lines, "And did those feet in ancient time walk upon England's mountains green," allude to a legendary tale of England in the antiquity.
The hymn's popularity grew in the early 20th century, and it became an emblem of national identity during moments of national celebration or remembrance. Its use has been particularly prominent during sporting events, including rugby and cricket matches, where it is sung with great fervour by the crowd.
In 1916, Sir Hubert Parry, a British composer, set the lyrics of "Jerusalem" to music, creating the beautiful and stirring hymn that is now widely recognized. Parry's arrangement further contributed to the song's enduring popularity and made it a staple in various patriotic events and ceremonies.

But Æthelstan was not sailing around the world creating English colonies. I’ve had this song sitting incomplete for about a month because it is such a monumental song and I wanted it to be perfect, I think in the end it’s just as good as I could get, I’m glad you liked it. Maybe now I can work on the actual real ‘Rule Britannia’ and not historical versions or off lyrical changes.

    JERUSALEM
    (State Anthem of England)
    Lyrics in English:
And did those feet in ancient time
    Walk upon England’s mountains green?
And was the holy lamb of God
    On England’s pleasant pastures seen?
    And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
    And was Jerusalem builded here
    Among those dark satanic mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear: o clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariots of fire!
    I will not cease from mental fight;
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
    Till we have built Jerusalem
In England’s green and pleasant Land.
    BÄYT ÄL-MÄQDİS
    (Angliä töbäge gimnı)
    Tranlated into Tatar:
    Borın zaman keşeläre
    Elek biredä yörgänme?
    Allahınıñ päyğämbäre
    İngliz cirenä iñgänme?
    Bezneñ Watan tufrağına
    İman nurları señgänme?
    Şaytan tegermäne urınına
    Bäyt Äl-Mäqdis tözelgänme?
    Altın cäyämne biregez!
    Uqlar, söñge kiteregez!
    Açılsınnar bolıtları!
    Telgä kilsen kük tupları!
    Min köräştän tuqtamam hiç,
    Bulır qılıç gel qulımda,
    Tözelgänçe Bäytäl-Mäqdis
    Güzäl Angliä quyınında.

This song I feel would make a better national anthem than the current, although due to the long history of the current one I probably wouldn't change it. There's something much more emotionally moving about a song that talks about England itself, our homeland, than on that talks purely of our monarch, I like the monarchy in the sense that it is a piece of history preserved and I want to keep it for that reason, but I don't feel any huge passion for them nor does the current anthem stir me particularly, but this on the other hand, is our song, for us and about us, you can just feel the pride through your veins, not for anything other than yourself, your family, friends, everyone who you know who lives here, and the land itself.

I really admire Queen Victoria, and Queen Charlotte, such fecund women. They truly did "lie back and think of England (Britain)." One hopes they enjoyed it of course, but to dedicate one (and one's) orifice to such a constant barrage is true patriotism! I hope the new one will be equally willing, I know she is a lot older but we crave the progeny 🇬🇧 👑

The song isn’t referring to Jerusalem as a city but more of a concept, a place of perfection and utopia, so the song isn’t really saying that England shall be were Jerusalem is but that England shall become holy and perfect.
