I had two reef tanks as a child in the early 90s. We used a sump full of bio-balls a mag drive protein skimmer pump and ran tap water. I’ve decided as an adult to dive back in and just bought a RO unit from BRS lol

What about the belief that carbon causes HLL disease in Tangs?

In 2 decades of reefing, and I can't count how many tanks, I have never encountered that. I have heard it many times, just never seen it. There has to be something unique about the people who run into that like the carbon they are using or how they use it. The most logical explanation I have heard is related to the fines or dust. It's either a dusty carbon, not rinsing it or using it in a manor that tumbles or pounds it to create new fines. For what it is worth we use ROX here in a BRS reactor, Sicce shark or in a mesh bag in the baffles of the sump.

That's a myth I think, it's the same in freshwater for discus. Just something to blame with no evidence to back it
