Being a car guy it's neat when you find the previous owners and get thier story. With the condition of that car and the mileage you know someone cared for it. Same reason I took my time looking for months and just splurged on a 2014 535ix, one owner that still looks and smells new, plus has both key fobs. I've always been a Chevy, Ford, Jeep and Toyota owner but wanted something totally different but held out for the right luxury car that was taken care of it's whole life before me.

Car dealerships will do this…they will “try” to fix your car and all of its problems, meanwhile a guy in their sales department is sending you emails asking if you want to sell your car.
That’s what happened with me and my Ford Focus RS. There were so many issues that were instigated by one of their lesser technicians. Took me over a year to diagnose all the problems myself, but finally got it back to perfect working condition. That’s the extent you’ll go to when you love a car.

Also remember he did have free supercharging for life, but when you trade them in Tesla will make you an offer and give you discounted supercharging or free supercharging on the new car for a period of time and then they turn off the free supercharging on the old car from what I understand.
Makes me think that Tesla sales employees get a large commission by getting a old Tesla off the road that has free supercharging (Tesla hates free super charging), getting that turned off, and getting that person into a brand new Tesla versus just somebody coming in for a new Tesla. every Tesla that they get off the road that has free supercharging is a win/goal for Tesla

That's a beautiful old Model S! You have a real gem there, don't ever trade it back in to Tesla! Most of it is as repairable as any other car, and Rock Auto carries more and more parts for it every day. They even have heater blower motors from your choice of three manufacturers AND a 'Blower Motor Control Module / Resistor' which might be exactly what you need. It's only $22!
BTW, The EPAS error is because you have no auto-pilot. 'DAS' is 'driver assistance system', and it sounds like you don't really want that anyways (I agree!) Some KFC would be tasty, though! :)

Actually Tesla has made working on your own car pretty easy. Service mode allows you to easily pair a new battery to the car both HV and LV battery which are both lithium. They also allow you to control basically everything on the CAN bus and the Ethernet Bus. Some modders have even been able to implement drift mode using an Arduino.
Or you can just buy the S3XY buttons, probably the most impressive soft-mod kit ever made.
You can change the drive motor bias on the fly, disable traction control, burnout mode with MAX regen on front motor and max torque on rear. Also custom rear sceens for older Teslas, and the ability to turn the lumbar support into a back massage (more like back rubber)
That isn't even getting in to aftermarket suspension, breaks, wheels, aero. Look up Dark-helmet, that is a track car...

You know that one of the most expensive problems, which is the battery, is practically new, and for the rest you can surely fix things yourself, while as you say, if you buy a new Tesla, apart from having a lot of electronic toys that They take away your driving experience - and they can be prone to failure generating more expenses - you will have to deal with an extra cost in interest from a possible loan in addition to the initial depreciation, which is much higher in a new vehicle...

What I keep telling people is to buy a high mileage Tesla, because you know the battery packs have been charged regularly, and the owner has kept up with maintenance. If you buy a lower mileage Tesla around the same year, you will more than likely have battery pack issues because it’s bad on the batteries if the car sits more than it does being driven. A high mileage one usually costs $12-16k. If you can get the $4k tax credit, you can get it for $8-12k. You can’t find many nice cars like this for around that price.

What’s more crazy is that Tesla has never changed the body style other than the front face, and interior. I think they made the Model S a little wider to fit a bigger battery. But you’re still getting the same driving experience either way, it doesn’t matter how old. Now sure, the newer Tesla’s are much quicker, but I like having a comfortable car. And tbh, I think the seats in the older ones are a lot more comfortable than the newer ones. I’ve sat in a 2020 Model S, and a 2013 Model S. The 2013 felt more like a luxury car, while the 2020 felt like a sports car.

Hey randy, love the content on your channel. been watching your videos on the tesla. It made me think, I don't know if you know this but hertz the rental car company is dumping 20,000 tesla models from there fleet. so my guess(and I could be wrong) is that used tesla models will be going down a little in value/ price once they hit the market. so it could be a good time for buying used tesla models. Seems like you got a very good deal since all of the stuff that was replaced!!!

  • @GoofinOffLA

So I agree that this particular scenario is good considering the engine was replaced and the battery only having 20,000 miles on it no doubt that thing will last and be a great car for the channel. I will say their are issues with the new ones and you're better off with what you currently have lots of battery issues on the new models theres even a recall for it now. Got a great deal overall though Randy. If anything its cool to see that a tesla can be that reliable with such minor maintenance costs.

See if you have power into the blower motor fuse module. See if you have power out of the module. There may be a resistor on the resister module circuit board.

I don’t think it’s the PTC-heater. I think the output (probably high side switch for the blower motor is broken in the ECU. If you know someone that can service electronics they might be able to fix the ECU. I don’t know how this error code works but since heater works only have difficulties regulating the heat in the car with full blower motor speed. Too much air going through. It will start cooling the cab when heat is too high.

"Active Aero" refers to the front right and left grille shutters. The plaid does not have active aero.
I believe this car is MCU2 because it has service mode. MCU1 doesn't have service mode.
As for the PTC heater replacement, its not terrible to replace... Just a lot of screws and bolts. Check Tesla service manuals and it gives you the exact steps to take. Also be careful as the PTC heater is a high voltage component. You might, just might have to do a software reinstall once the new heater is installed. You can push a software reinstall through service mode. Also, keep an eye on the rear drive unit. That is the most common failure point on the P85. It's awesome it has a 90kwh battery! The battery like you said is softer locked to a 85 which is actually good because when you charge the car to 100%, the battery is really at 93%ish percent!
Great content here, I love this car.

I took my beloved 04 Honda Pilot with 100k for service (all fluids) a few months ago and they said my transmission was faulty and i needed to replace it at a cost of $3500 which i declined! I noticed it jumped when i shifted and when changing gears so i ended up replacing all the motor and trans mounts with brand new honda parts i found online and the engine and trans jumping went away. i spent like 300 bucks on parts! Dealers unfortunately are a rip off some are good but many just want to replaced whole assembly they don’t want to just replace the part they want to do everything because it’s easier and makes them more money!

Sounds like you might keep the old Tesla. How will that work out as you can't sell it too yourself to put it in your name. Would you just register it under AAR? I've done that with my car and found insurance is cheaper for some reason, though registration is a little more, I get to claim it as a tax deduction so ends up actually being cheaper. Plus I get a tax deduction on maintenance and gas.

What you said about a car being a one owner even if it goes through 20 dealers is wrong at least as far as wi and il titles
Titles have dealer assignment spots on back of title 4 if i remember correctly when they are full the last dealer has to title the car and become a (owner) this is done to protect the public because a car that bounces from dealer to dealer are often problem cars that the first 3 dealers didn't want to fix

Agree. About keeping the Tesla S. The Nanny computers do compete with the driving experience to the detriment of all. Do get new tires before taking that trip which could involve snow and ice. That car will pay for itself.
