Great choice, and you do know quite a bit about why you made that choice! Here in the states, that common laurel is EVERYWHERE also. Nice difference :--)))))

Great video as per usual. I've put several hedges in previously and tend to go for Yew by default now. It's evergreen, dense and contrary to reputation isn't that slow growing. My current one put on about 12inches last season. The other advantage is that it like Portuguese laurel only needs pruning once each year. Using hedge trimmers sometimes leaves scruffy bits of leaves on all laurels and I can't be doing with using secateurs for a whole hedge. Yew is poisonous however and wouldn't be suitable for your young family and pets so good choice.
Thanks. I love Yew and would have liked to see a neat yew hedge along the front however to buy anything that would start off taller than the wall would have been too costly. We already have a huge yew bush/tree out front beside the house which like you say does grow fast and at least no where that the kids or pets are. The Portuguese laurel is a little easier with trimmers but regular laurel can look awful after a trim like you mention, often see the leaves looking very 'mashed' up.

Have you had to trim it yet? I'm thinking of pulling out a conifer hedge because I hate picking up all the really small trimmings. Are these any easier? Do you trim each stem or go over the whole thing with an electric trimmer? If so, does it leave a less rough looking finish than the cherry laurel owing to the smaller leaves?
Shame, I was hoping that, after the research and thought that you've put into the rest of your restoration (reclaimed/eco materials) you would have gone for a lovely mixed native hedging. Not only could this have been clipped however you wished, and included as many evergreen (or beech/hornbeam) as required but would have provided valuable space for wildlife too.

We have mixed hedging elsewhere around the property which is packed full of sparrows and song birds. This hedge is beside a busy main road and while mixed native hedging is lovely, for me it is more suited to a rural or garden setting. It had crossed my mind but just didn't quite meet what we needed. Thanks for the comment though, good point.

Hello do you know what distance you need to plant the laurel for hedging? Also how fast do they grow. Many thanks for your help

Do they have a very deep root system? I have septic tanks you think if i put them about 3 feet away from the pipes the pipes will be fine?
Is Portuguese laurel poisonous ? Google is giving me conflicting answers. I know cherry laurel is, but it seems to be 50/50 online. I'm thinking about getting some of these but would be worried about dogs or kids chewing leaves etc.
Do you not have concern of Portuguese laurel (even more so the cherry laurel) being poisonous from root to berries? Especially when pruning or if you want to have other plants or vegetables growing near them? My first thought was Cherry laurel, then second Portuguese laurel, but discarded both ideas as I want to grow vegetables, and I don't want the soil to be poisoned. So now, I'm looking towards more wildlife friendly native species, that also display seasonal interest. Although they lose their leaves over the winter, I was thinking, I don't really tend to sit around outside during winter requiring such privacy. Also I think the actual hedge shoots would give enough privacy?
Any updates on what the hedge looks like now, a year later?
Still standing and filled out well. This year is it's second so expect it will do more growing this year too.
