  • Ice Fishing Utah at Cleveland Reservoir. This is a high mountain lake where I'm ice fishing for rainbow trout.

    nice video man that looks like a lot of fun! What line would you recommend for ice fishing?

      +618 Fishing Thanks, I appreciate it. This is just one guys opinion, so take it for what it's worth...but I like a braided line for the following reasons. Sometimes I fish in 80-100ft of water and I like that it doesn't have the stretch like the monofilament does when jigging and especially for hook sets. That said, there can be some flaws. When you're out jigging in below freezing temps, it's kind of like making a candle. You keep dipping this line/string in the water and the ice on your line just keeps getting bigger and bigger, and some people claim that braided line can become brittle and break when ice fishing. I usually fish out of a heated shelter, so this usually isn't a concern of mine. However, for trout most guys will use a 6-8lb mono. Hope that helps.

    You lucky dog, you got to go fishing. I'm stuck at work again. Glad to see the new video on my phone today. Let's hook up sometime and go drill some holes together. I'll be nice and even let you use my Marcum LX-6.

      +MrRojoneck Ha ha, well in my eyes you're the lucky one....I'm moving to Indiana in a week for a year to finish Physical Therapy school with a clinical rotation. And, it doesn't freeze where I'm headed. So you see, you're the lucky one because you'll at least be around ice still! Too bad we didn't make it happen sooner, it would have been fun to get out! I guess I'll have to enjoy the ice by proxy with your vids this winter :)

      Crapola! Hit me up when you're back in town, if you come back to Utah anyways. Good luck in Indiana.

    Not a fan of the shelter huh? Do you always put on the kastmaster or depends on the lake/species?

    • @the-mountainlife
      @the-mountainlife  5 років тому +1

      Ha ha, depends on how cold it is! I don't always use a kastmaster, but when I do, I seem to catch a lot of rainbows and cutthroats. It really depends on what kind of jig I am using. If I am using a plastic that I'm going to be jigging a lot, then I will use the kastmaster. If I have a tungsten painted jig head tipped with bait, then I often won't use it. Good luck, it's that time of year!

    Great video as always. I fished huntington a couple of weeks ago, and I know there is another lake a little further down the road coming through fairview canyon. It is on your left as you turn towards Joe's valley. is that Cleveland lake?

    • @the-mountainlife
      @the-mountainlife  8 років тому

      +Chris Ashby Thanks Chris, I appreciate the compliment. If you are headed east out of Fairview, Cleveland is literally about 1-2 miles past Huntington reservoir on your right (south side of the road).

    Great video. Just wondering what camera you are using.

    • @the-mountainlife
      @the-mountainlife  8 років тому

      +Lane Shurtliff Thanks Lane! I have two cameras that I use. The wide angle shots/action cam are taken with a Contour Roam2 camera. It has been an ok camera for the money about $90, but is a little quirky when really cold out. The other one that I use now is a Canon Vixia HF R600. I picked this up as it's better for filming my hunts. Mainly because it has a great optical zoom rather than digital. If I were just filming fishing, I would stick with the action cams. However, during my elk hunt, it was really nice to have the Canon. Hope that helps.

      Thanks. I was thinking of getting a good one that wasn't too costly for coyote hunts. I liked the zoom that you had.

    • @the-mountainlife
      @the-mountainlife  8 років тому

      I don't know how familiar you are with cameras, but just make sure in your new one that you get something with a high optical zoom rather than digital if you're going to be filming something like yote hunts. A digital zoom will end up looking pixelated and blurry, whereas an optical zoom will remain clear. So my Canon has a 32X optical zoom, and 57X overall zoom when coupled with the digital, just to give you an idea. Good luck.

      Thanks Mountain Fishing, I appreciate it. I'm pretty jelly that you have a cabin up there, that's God's country my friend. I live in southern Idaho, so I don't get up there a whole lot, you'll have to fish it and keep us posted!

    Are you allowed to keep the fish to eat and if so how do they taste

    • @the-mountainlife
      @the-mountainlife  8 років тому +1

      +Nic Jolicoeur Yes, you are allowed to keep them. Rainbow and Cutthroat trout are not bad to eat at all. Every now and again I take some home and fillet them up.

      +Robert Lloyd Hey Robert, thanks for the comment. I've never made it to Miller's Flat, and this was my first trip to Cleveland. There is definitely some cool country in that area that I need to explore a little more. Thanks for the suggestion. What kind of fish are in Miller's?
