This crossover was even referenced in one of Spawn's starting quotes in Mortal Kombat 11 when he meets Raiden, who also met the Dark Knight in the tame Mortal Kombat vs DC crossover and his guest appearance in Injustice 2. Raiden: "You remind me of another dark knight?" Spawn: "The billion dollar crusader! He's a friend." Raiden: "It appears we are both well traveled."
The picture of Jack Kirby at the end of the book was taken at Golden Apple comics in Hollywood. Sometime in the early nineties, maybe 1992 when they hosted a Jack Kirby art tour (?). Another great show guys!
You all should consider checking out "Creepy Presents Alex Toth". It's a collection of Toth's work on both Creepy, and Eerie, comics. The panel layout for "The Hacker Is Back!" And "The Hacker's Last Stand" are phenomenal page layouts. Cool story too. Would look great under the microscope.
Pretty fun trip down memory lane. I hope you guys do the DC one as well. I remember being slightly disappointed in this one and getting the other one on a later trip to the comic shop. While not as flashy, I remember being surprised by the fact I enjoyed it. I don't remember any details of the story, but I feel like there was more to it or something... plus you gotta at least appreciate what Klaus Jansen brought to it. It's been forever since I cracked it open though. I wonder if memory serves me correctly.
Was McFarlane trying to do the Bruce Timm Batman? The Animated Series would’ve been out by then, was highly influential, & this one is so different from his Year 2 version.
I consider this comic kinda as a guilty pleasure. This was definitely the foreshadowing we would get into All Star Batman and Robin and Dark Knight Strikes again. I also find it funny that Spawn is basically canon to The Dark Knight Returns universe. So does that mean we can get something like The Hellspawn Returns or something?
As a HUGE Spawn fan I honestly don’t care for this book or the war devil book. For obvious reasons lol But they are great conversation peaces for both Spawn and Batman fans Great review
I love this book. I can’t find a digital version even on comiXology to buy. I’ve been looking for years can you help please. I’m disabled so I need digital comics
Yo did anybody get into that other Batman/Spawn joint, War Devil? Klaus Jansson and Chuck Dixon i think? I could only pick one at the store and as much as i wanted the Todd art, the paranormal demonic story for War Devil hooked me more, so i passed on this one and went with War Devil even though that Klaus Jansson art was not my speed at all. I guess it was a wash since both of these were kinda trash in the harsh light of 25 years later
Alright but I would love to get my hands on one of the original fight scenes tho. I think he does a cool Batman but it is stylish to say the least. Anyone want another issue made?
Spawn Batman has a lot of plot cannibalisation from Millers other works. For instance, the Arms Dealer character who makes cyborgs out of the bums, she's very similar to the Psychologist character from FM's epic Robocop script, if you check out the Avatar Press graphic novel adaptation (I'd love to see you do a read through of that one!). Basically the same character, but in the Robocop Script version she goes on to get her body destroyed and takes over the RoboCop 2 chassis (in the movie Robobcop 2 it was the Cain character). Also the whole "Batman disarming Nukes while mid-flight" we've seen that in RoboCop vs Terminator and of course Superman's attempt in TDKR. That bit made me yawn as a kid, I already saw Miller kinda repeating the same notes back then. But I get it, he's doing his image pals a favour and making bank. All that said, yeah check out that Frank Miller's Robocop if you haven't already, it's wild.
I remember when this came out. I was SO disappointed. I thought it was garbage (yet I still have my copy 🤔). I may have stopped collecting Spawn after this.
This comic was such a major disappointment when I bought it as a kid…I remember the art was ok but I didn’t care for the Batman depiction or Miller’s writing, hated it! 🥲
Mcfarlane's Batman seems to be inspired by Breyfogle's version.

The same store where Eazy-E attended the Rob Liefeld Youngblood signing..!
I fucking loved this comic as a kid . I read it into the ground . 👌
Just read Street Angel for the first time...dude, that was one hell of an enjoyable comic.
I wonder if McFarlane’s Batman head, where it’s mostly silhouette, but with white eyes and teeth, had any influence on the design of Batman Beyond?
Jim Lee often takes credit for adding the treads on Batmans boot but it was Miller who did them first in that pin up at the back.

"Like Star Wars episode one, I convinced myself I liked it."
Didn't we all.

I ABSOLUTELY remember Modulok LOL
cant wait for the red room Batman cross over
Also, I was hoping you guys would say something about Spawn's disappearing and reappearing mask. Lol
This comic marked the end of Todd doing full time pencils on Spawn
that swinging 2 page spread looks like it has so early Cupullo help
One of the last comics I bought before I stopped collecting... the quality of it may have been the death knell. I remember thinking WTF am I doing:)
I was going to say exactly the same thing.
"Thats how spawn finishes" literal lol
You gotta do the DC Batman/Spawn issue, too....
Remember this when I was a kid in like 1994🤔 Great nostalgia, think Ill hunt one down.... for sure💯✊
Oh and...1st!
Am I the only one who thought that fight sequence with only bat-logo and lettering was more of a nod to Batman '66 tv show?
Even after my brain developed out of adolescence (kinda) I still think this is baadasssss.

I just picked up both copies from my mothers house this week, they’re going to CO with me :)

Great review
I was disappointed with this as a kid because I thought it was going to be penciled by Frank Miller and inked by Todd.
Just like spawn/Batman I pick up red room whenever I see it. Great show.
Spawn goes over, but it's not a squash match 😂
I remember as a kid hating when Spawn took the mask off, ruined the visual for me, the suit was awesome.
man, we ALL had that book- yeah they sold...
This comic basically has the same plot as Robocop 2...
Did you find Felix the Cat in this comic?
I love this book. I can’t find a digital version even on comiXology to buy. I’ve been looking for years can you help please. I’m disabled so I need digital comics
Modulok was the best!
Gents can yous get an Interview with uncle Frank Miller reg: this comic book?

I know Todd said he wanted the Spawn logo to be as ubiquitous as the bat symbol, but 30+ years later it still doesn't really do it for me. Sorry Todd.

Did Felix the Cat make it in this issue?
Woohoo!

First yall!
McMiller....sigh...The best of everything coming out mega mediocre.....(my opinion)
