For years I thought of these guys as my little prog secret, and to an extent they still are anywhere other than Scandinavia. They are so prolific, and as good as anybody. Absolutely love them, and very happy to see you dig them too Jim. I got goosebumps during that first track!
Been a fan since 1994, so great to see them get some love. You're not wrong about their jam vibes, so hope you get to see them live.
Ha! This album went under my radar. I thoght I had control, but as you say, they produce a LOT. Love what I hear
I very recently discovered them (actually thanks to Scott from the Prog Corner). I’ve done a deep dive into their discography, especially from around 2010 when they took a proggier approach. All I can say is, what a band, as you say extremely impressive quality/quantity ratio. Hope you can do The Death Defying Unicorn or Heavy Metal Fruit one day.
Keep up the good work Jim, really enjoy your videos !
Vortex Surfer!
Yes, please check out Death defying unicorn. I saw them performing it in the Opera venue in Oslo in 2012 I think. It was epic. Really hope that everyone can experience their excellent music. Motorpsycho is my musical base, I cone back to them many times and I suddenly understand one of their songs and it’s with me forever. It can take a while and I didn’t find the pleasure of the Ancient Astronaut until I saw this video. Love Motorpsycho. Don’t listen to them every day, but it is the band I listen to the most.
Been a fan of these peeps since around 1995, seen them live at least once a year since then (and again tomorrow). A true national treasure here in Norway ❤
Motorpsycho is well known to us, Psychonauts...but we welcome all new! Thank you for doing them justice!
No problem! It’s easy to play when it’s this good!
@JimNewstead I agree. Been a fan since 93. Timothy's Monster is epic, if you don't know it.
Fantastic first track....absolutely brilliant...First time listening , like Greg Lake meets Yes and Genesis in the middle...extraordinary music ...
First time hearing this band, that was epic! Thanks Jim!!
Pretty epic, great description!!
This album has vibes of Larks Tongues or Starless. One of my favorite Motorpsycho albums, but I love all of them. Great band.
This is my first time hearing this album, too. That last song especially is fantastic. Your “love child of Hawkwind and King Crimson” made me chuckle out loud. Perfect! Looking forward to side two.
Great choice Jim!!!
WOW! First time hearing... "will" dig deeper!!!!
Great, Jim. I knew this was out but hadn't heard it, yet. So I can listen with you now for the first time 🙂 drumming was particularly impressive.
Looking forward to see them live next Saturday. You should check out Arabs in Aspic, an excellent prog band from the same town, Trondheim. Also excellent prog.
Guitarist is bloody good....what a great listen....part 2 next.....see the King Crimson link.....all the best of prog rock rolled up into a very decent band...
Yes, Motorpsycho are consistently brilliant. Definitely in my top 5 currently active bands. Question - are there any bad records with a Mellotron on them? If so, I've never heard them.
Now that’s a challenge! I’m sure there must be…. Hmmmmm
Hello Jim, I'm watching this on my way to see my hairy little sister at the Granny zoo! Great music, thank you very much!
Band years ago....May Blitz, 3 piece, 2 albums and that was it...very similar ,just bass , drums and keyboard...last track listening to now....lovely..
That Mona Lisa song reminded me of "In the court of the crimson king" by King Crimson
Ah drones......reminds me of Faust and.....Me! Love a bit of drone stretch. When I make music I love the creation of layerings and stretchings of sounds....brings that organic earthy quality....that hypnotizes zie mind....must listen to more Motorpsycho....the album I have i just don't seem to go back to.....yet....👍👍👍
Love Motorpsycho! I have seen them twice back in the 90s. Also worth listening: HGH, the band of the former Drummer Håkon Gebhardt who sadly left the band a long time ago.
Excellent album as always. Tracks 3 and 4 were written during the pandemic for a Norwegian Dance Company so that gives some background to the sound.
Thank your video, I discovered this album, "Ancients astronauts", and a great one : "The all is one", a great prog album. And "Kingdom of oblivion" is a good album too
They brought Wolfmother to mind for me on the first track. Mona Lisa Azrael was something altogether different though!
Two additions: The songs 3&4 were originally composed for a dance performance AND the whole album was recorded live in the studio with just a few tweaks and overdubs added later.
Hmm. Interesting; looking forward to side 2! And I spy an Adnams mug there...
It certainly is! The beer from my neck of the woods! You can’t go anywhere in Suffolk without encountering Adnams!
What is it about Norway? So many great bands.
Come to San José de Manglaralto, Ecuador and I'll gladly buy you a coffee.Vinyl. What a concept!
Excellent. This album is surprisingly hard to download. Bandcamp doesn't have it, but Amazon does. I don't like Amazon much, but the Motorpsycho site does not seem to offer it. I will bide my time.
its the best
I think it's the quality of the band...not how many albums they put out the counts of course. King Gizzard rarely do less than very good and jump into great loads... Didn't realise Motorpsycho were similarly prolific Jim! .....
That mellotron made me giggle....just ordered the excellent Gravity by Anekdoten the moment b4 watching this video....now they do love a mellotron too!🧐👍 I think since watching one of your Anekdoten videos I've now gradually collected all but the debut Vemod🖤
Sometimes, it remembers me the old King Crimson, especially side one
I hear some mixture between Mogwai, Pink Floyd, King Crimson
It looks like an old classic, transe, with long themes
I certainly don't listen to Motorpsycho for the vocals, that's for sure. However, since the instrumentation is so damn great, I don't care at all that the vocals might be sub-par. This is a great band who never disappoints.
The vocal is better in the 2020 album "The all is one"
@@lesimprosdulezardvert1342 I agree. That is a great album with much better vocals, and it might actually be favorite Motorpsycho album.
❤️🤘
Still not sure about this one. Kinda puts me to sleep…
I actually discovered them thanks to you Scott. It’s been quite a ride ! Love them !
Nooooooo! Really? I’m absolutely LOVING this record!
@@JimNewstead I like it but I want to LOVE it. Time will tell!!! Good to see you back in the captain's chair, my friend. We need you!!!
Musically it’s very interesting but not outstanding to me. Could improve though.
I don’t like the singers voice that much but I’m listening through the tv speakers and not my headphones. Therefore I’ll have to hear them again.
Sound like a Chinese gong to me.
The last part in the middle is a bit too much for me. Just making noise without real structure.
I totally agree with your similarity to both Anekdoten and King Crimson. Great side. Thanks for playing it.
