I have an akita. We adopted him from Battersea dogs home 5 years ago. 2 years after we got him he saved my life. I had a cardiac arrest in the street while out walking him. He got free of the lead and found someone to help me. The person he found did cpr on me for 29 minutes before the emergency services arrived.
I live with a Japanese Akita Inu whose now 11 yrs old. I received him as a gift when I turned 6. For his old age, he is a very hyper dog but for most of his life he’s been a very calm dog minding his own business but alert when strangers are near. His aura is strong and he’s a very emotional dog. One time we left him at home for 2 days but forgot to say goodbye to him ( we always do). We arrived to see him crying and watery eyes. He ignored us for a week. As an only child, I consider him my brother. I apologize if you read this thinking something was going to blow you away, I just felt like sharing my story. If you have any questions about my Akita, feel free to ask.
kuhvn Your JAI sounds amazing. They have such a wonderful character. Unless you’ve shared your life with one it’s quite difficult to put down in words just how unique they are. Thank you for sharing your story. Robert, Flora and Kin.
Thank You for sharing. I think they are beautiful. And would love to have. One. I have a huge German shepherd that I think has just a bit of akita in him. Closest I could get to true akita. .
@@duaneholcomb8408 Sadly, he passed away last year, early June. We had to put him down as he had been battling with cancer for many months. But, yes they are very beautiful creatures.
@@kuhvn1487 I know what its like I had a husky. She passed away last year,, or I had to put her down she had lung cancer. And couldn't breath very good. I hated to see her suffer any more so I had her put to sleep I sure loved that old dog. Sorry for your loss. They just aren't with us long enough. Are they,,,
Akita are bred to think independently, and must be raised as a family member, not a pet. This subtle difference brings out their incredible personalities. Positive reinforcement is a must, only gentle, occasional, rebukes when training. the opening shot of both breeds on either side is an epic image.
Absolutely agree! We are blessed with our second Akita and he is absolutely a full fledged family member. It’s a pain and patience is a must but they turn out to be such amazing companions.
@@brians3899 When I am swamped with work, working at home, they come up and see me, but do not demand. Perhaps they get petulant, being ignored, but perhaps they are just adapting to the workload, like i have to. Either way, they do it without complaint or holding a grudge. When I'm free- it play time and 'cuddle' (at least as much cuddling as akitas are wont to do...) time. Thanks for the reply- give your buddy a hug from us, celebrating 7th and 8th birthdays this month. The biy, who I think expresses more Japanese akita than his 1/2 aunt, he'll come and lay down by me when i am working on the house- watching what I do- just happy to be around me when I am doing something. So reminds me of a little boy. But this just shows he has his own independent ideas--- I love that.
My Akita Yoshi was the most loyal animal I've ever come across. He was also incredibly crafty , like , really crafty . He was always thinking . Mostly how to do something he wasn't supposed to be doing , but it was one of his most endearing qualities. Amazing breed of dog . He lived until 17 years old which for a large breed is quite long . I miss him everday .
They're the best dogs ever 😥❤ We got our boy Kuma when I was 7, and he passed away right after my 20th bday. I was absolutely heartbroken, I still cry when I look through pics of him. I just adopted a 2 year old Akita, Logan, last October, and I forgot just how special these dogs really are. They're so loyal & dignified, yet super fun & goofy. Just such an amazing breed. I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm glad you had 17 years with your Yoshi.
I have my Akita from Japan. He is the calmest, most loyal, and most unwavering dog I've ever had. However, his training was difficult, he did not want to listen to me for a while, but now we are one heart and one soul. I love him very much. :)
I've had Akita since he was 8 months old...he had basic command training, and some tactical training...but the one thing that he does that is worth more than all that training put together is alert me to when i am about to have seizures...he was never trained for it. He is my world and I thank God he was put in my life!
I have two Akitas and they’re absolutely brilliant and wonderful dogs! Prior to Akitas, I was a long time German Shepherd owner and trainer. So it did take me some getting used to their independent nature. But once you understand and gain their loyalty, they’re the best! Especially, if you’re like me that prefers a dog that does not yearn for your attention 24/7 . Great video! Thank you!
I HAD A JAPANESE FEMALE, 14 YEARS SHE LIVED, AND SHE WAS THE MOST AMAZING ANIMAL I EVER HAD, INTELIGENT, INDEPENDENT, BEAUTIFUL, LOYAL AND FEARCE AT THE SAME TIME.... I MISS HER EVERYDAY
I HAD A JAPANESE FEMALE, 31 YEARS SHE LIVES, AND SHE WAS THE MOST AMAZING WOMAN I EVER HAD, INTELIGENT, INDEPENDENT, BEAUTIFUL, LOYAL AND FEARCE AT THE SAME TIME.... SHE DUMPED ME I MISS HER EVERYDAY
Shiba Inu pictures were shown twice as Akita. They kind of look alike, but just notice that the Akitas don't have the red colour going all the way down to their nose, whereas Shibas do.
@Doris Karloff the "original" shivas are as big as akitas and they look very similiar but if you look closely their build and face are slightly different
I’ve always loved the Akita Inu. I had no idea there’s an American version! One thing he didn’t mention is that Akitas are very adept escape artists & not inclined to return home due to their independence. 2 neighbors down from us have a beautiful Akita Inu who escapes his 7-8ft fence whenever he decides that’s what’s on his to do list for a particular day. He’s quite jovial, (at least he’s always been w/us), so we’ve been fortunate that at least one of us has been outside at the same time he is every time he’s escaped, able to return him safely home while he’s enjoying our affection. You can see the mischievous intelligence in his eyes. Absolutely fabulous, stunning dog. We’re happy to have him for a neighbor 😊.
We had one that liked to get into the neighbor's fenced in yard and escape, but we didn't know how she was doing it. So I followed her and discover a lose board on the privacy fence to the next door yard, she then climbed onto the above ground pool deck where an aluminum ladder was leaning against the 4ft cyclone fence, she stepped onto the ladder then shimmied and shuffled down and went on her way. We didn't know how long she had been using this route because she could let herself back into our yard when she decided to come home, come to find out she had frustrated the local dog catcher several times by letting herself back into our yard he couldn't get her. Lol.
i had 2 male akitas and they were like two peas in a pod. they treated each other like family and never fought with each other they were EXTREMELY protective over me and my brothers too sadly once one of them passed away it set the other one into a VARY deep depression (he refused to walk or eat and just layed around waiting for his bother to come back and our family couldn't take seeing him like that.. the vets suggested we put him down cuzz it seemed like nothing would bring him back to his uslua;; self and we ended up bringing him to the vet to put him to sleep.. i miss them so much... i absolutely love this breed and hopefully i can get another one later in life
Is yours aggressive? I really want an Akita but, I do genuinely worry about their protective nature. I know it all depends on how a dog is trained but, dogs can have some predispositions.
Mars S she is the loveliest dog you will ever meet. She gets on with any dog and has pass as a guard dog. It’s how you socialise them, training and being firm with them from a puppy. They are great dogs. You can watch her videos as prove. This was open to show that Akita’s are lovely dogs.
Whenever I threw a ball for the Akita that deemed me worthy of being his human, he would do one of two things. Either follow the ball and take it somewhere or give me a look that said "Fetch? What do you mean fetch? You threw it away, if you want it, you go and get it". I loved him so much, he was my best friend. I have his ashes in an urn by the front door where he spent most of his time. He was a smokey grey and his name was Marshall, but he used to get Moo.
Rika G I don’t think many people realise “inu” translates to dog in Japanese, yet they insist on saying Japanese Akita inu.. just as annoying as recalling the American Akita as the Akita lol, I have one myself btw but the original Akita is definitely the Japanese.
Bill W nor do I, but I like to educate myself, so I researched what it meant before I owned my first one. Even dogs I’m not interested in buying I research. Suppose most people are just too ignorant.
Thank you! God... I was looking for this comment. Akita was first then American Akita, because the original what she calls japanese Akita is actually over 4,000 years old breed. It has been in japan for a really long time. American Akita was bred from Akita and german shepherd to get the American Akita. I personally prefer the original Akita over the American one, but that is just me.
My first dog was an Akita, who lost two yeas ago. Absolutely loved cats, in a good way, the neighbours cat used to jump the fence, wander in and say hello to him, that's when he (the cat) wasn't snuggling up to him when he was on his bed, he would also come a walk with us now and again, closing in for protection from any other dogs that were around. Took him in, as the breeder didn't want him and he didn't have a home to go to. Was warned about not letting males mix, his best mate was another male Akita (not related to him), another neighbours dog, would bare teeth at him, he would just stand there as if to say you don't bother me.
Yes! The Akitas come in three colors, red, white, and brindle. The American Akitas can come in any color and most of the times have a black mask on their face.
The Danger Zone , Hi, in the UK where I live and filmed this the two breeds as prescribed by our Kennel Club is: 1. Akita (like Flora) 2. Japanese Akita Inu (like Kin) There are called by differing names in other countries.
I have a deep affinity for the Akita, which probably stems from my obsession with all things Japanese. Rob and I suffer from a similar medical ailment. My days are plagued with chronic non-epileptic seizures that mimic epilepsy in astounding ways. The fact that Rob has so clearly benefited from a service dog brings me hope.
I did some research on bite force and how is it that the Japanese breed of Akita Inu has up to 450 PSI in bite force and the American Akita which is Inu breed mixed with more powerful dogs like Mastiff, German Shepherd etc only ended with a bite force of about 250 PSI pretty much the same as pit bull which it suprises me that even pit bulls have such a weak PSI when it comes to bite force
@J Thorsson if I can find it again I will send it somehow. It was about a month ago when I did the research and it was just research on Google that I did. I just happened to memorize the info.
@J Thorsson no domestic dog is close to wolf bit force. wolves get up to 1100 pounds per square inch. they have to crack the bones of moose and buffalo.. it's not even close.
@@NeverGiveUp-yt5nl yeah bit force is not always straightforward. most people won't believe it - but a hyena has a stronger bite force than a lion. even among cats - jaguars have stronger bit force than lions... but overall lions are stronger than both.
I’m so happy to see you spotlight the Akita. I have a male Akita that I adopted. He’s so intelligent, so kind and gentle, and very obedient. Which surprises people everywhere we go. He just has his yearly exam (weighing in at 116lbs) at the vet yesterday and they always tell me how’s he’s just the most obedient dog that comes into the office.
I have two American Akita’s. One male and one female. Training at the earliest age possible to desensitize them to as many things as possible, is so so important. Training is so important in any breed!! Thanks for covering these beautiful animals.
msss Davv I do not have kids, my female wasn’t raised around them and hates them. My male was raised around kids and loves them. It’s all about puppyhood and the exposure I believe.
@msss Davv we had an Akita from an 8 week old puppy and as you know instinctually they are pack animals that are structured as highly social family oriented loyal to the pack. We had four kids and could not have asked for a better member of our family than her.
msss Davv 12 years will be fine, when the dog becomes mature your child will be 14-15. With kids preferably choose a female. Male’s can be dominant/protective towards strange kids coming to your house.

So sad to hear you lost your dog, our boy is 12 and getting grey and a bit of arthritis but still active. We had him as a rescue from age 7, will be devastated when he goes but you have to think of the wonderful life you gave them and the joy they brought you.
jaee Juliet how are you doing now? i lost mine three days ago, and I never thought anything could make me hurt this much. I'm done crying over him, but there is a feeling of emptyness that feels physical, like there is something missing that won't go away. He was the one thing that kept everyone in my family tied together. With him gone the house feels empty, and its strange how little I care about anything right now.
We recently lost our two elderly German Shepherds, they passed away within a few months of each other. During this time of mourning their loss, we have been researching canine breeds to help us select our next dogs. Your videos have been invaluable in assisting us with this important decision. We are fortunate to have a large house and grass yard, so we are able to keep larger breeds, and my husband and I will take our time to assure an intelligent choice. Our heartfelt thanks to you for your beautifully produced and informative videos.
We found an Akita puppy in our yard and could not find where it came from, but we also did not know for at least a year what the breed was, then finally did a little research. She was the most beautiful dog you have ever seen, intelligent, loyal affectionate, easy going. She stayed in the house with the family until she was full grown, then she decided she wanted to stay outside. She began hunting small animals that came into our yard at night, like possums, raccoons and groundhogs, but she especially liked killing skunks. She never hunted or killed cats, which seemed strange to me, but later I discovered the Japanese who originally bred them had them hardwired to guard the farmers crops and that's why she only hunted animals that were harmful to the vegetable crops, even though we didn't have a garden we did have plenty of nighttime visiting varment type animals. She didn't eat them she would kill them, then bring them to the front porch and wait for us to acknowledge her good deed.
Adopting my akita was the best thing I’ve ever done, I couldn’t imagine my life without her now even after eating our sofa and every doormat we have bought lol
WO33ER1985 Green For some reason I read that as you having eaten the sofa and every doormat you’ve bought as I was skimming the comments (before my brain went from neutral into first gear!)
I was attacked by an akita When i was 2, in one bite it left my nose hanging by a piece of cartilage the size a fingernail, and i had over 1800 stitches as a result. I was afraid of akitas for 16 years before one day in 2017 i met an akita at a park, and it was the most adorable and loving dog ive ever met, now i want an akita
Dracoriax no actually, the dog was never put down because of the attack, the dog was actually alive for another 2 months until it attacked the owners daughter too and then he took it out and shot it in the head
@@demonwaker22 Are you US based? In the UK in the instance of any dog attack the police are involved. That's really shitty that it took another attack for anything to happen.
Akitas are without a doubt my favorite breed. I have owned 2 in the last twenty years. They are a large breed with a longer than average lifespan. My first Akita was 12 when he passed. It took me almost 5 years to get another. She is currently 2, and is the most protective dog I have ever owned. She will not let strangers, even family friends, near my kids. If she doesn't know you, my kids are off limits. While it can be a bit of a pain, I wouldn't have it any other way.
My Akita GSD mix is the smartest and most loving service dog ever. He was a rescue at 5yrs. It is possible, but this is not my first or 10th dog. I've been diagnosed with cptsd and my Akita mix is flawless for stopping panic attacks, self harm, rage outs, dissociation, ECT. Hope it helps 😊
It's because the Americans are the ones who named the more powerful dog Akita. The Japanese called them Dog. So basically whoever named them first got to keep the name.
Adam O Ammm... Akita has been called Akita inu (or Akita matagi) for over 400 years in Japan. And “powerful”? What does that have to do with the origin of a breed name?
@Eddy Juana lol white people? Are you American? In Germany the Japanese Akita is called "Akita" or "Akita Inu" and the American is called "American Akita". It's an American thing... like your "white people" obsession.
King.a 99 socializing and training are so important for this breed. Expose your puppy to many new places and people when they are young and after vaccinations of course. Training classes are great too! Also get them used to grooming they she’s a lot! I have a video on my channel I made years that shows a little of how they shed. I’m hoping to make an updated video soon too :)
@@SkylineAkitas thank you so much for taking your time to answer me! King.a 99 that’s great! I always say akitas are a lot of work, but they are so worth it! 😊 and yes I am very lucky she likes grooming haha that beautiful fur is a lot when they decide to shed lol
This is my favorite episode of Animal Watch, along with the Caucasian Shepherd. Akita’s are so special, but nobody ever really talks about the differences between Japanese and American Akita’s. I’m glad you covered their vast differences. Also, I’m totally detecting Okami soundtrack music here - 110% approve!!!! 🙌🏻❤️🙌🏻❤️🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕🐕
Yes God gave dog as a help to man... I knew someone who had a little toy dog that detected when there cancer return... It would go to that part of the body and moan and whine... The owner knew... Sadly the disease took their life - but it was amazing still. As to the seizures - I've heard that of several breeds.
@@femboyjj ok... so you think "evolution" gave dogs such gifts to help human beings???? ummmm - that's pretty sad. which electron decided to charge what other atomic element to give dogs that ability?
I recently got an Am. Akita, born 04/03/2020, I was blown away by their intelligence! Sit, down, and stay was so easy to teach, she got it in about a day or less. Sometimes, I think she can understand what I am saying, I would tell her to do something or not to do something and she follows through!
I so thrilled you did Akita!! The knowledge in this video was fantastic. I own an Akita (American) and I absolutely love this breed. Not for the faint of heart, but the most amazing companion.
Midas Akita’s are notoriously stubborn. If an owner is not “firm” (not aggressive) they WILL over take you and do as they please. As a very high prey drive/strong/guarding dog, you do not want them to just be running with out proper training and socializing.
@@user1ofuser2 thanks for the reply, that's very interesting! so aggressive is what an owner is aspiring towards if they want to have an Akita as a companion ? (I know you don't mean aggressive in a negative sense, well I assume). Could you give abit of clarity? Do you mean commitment to training and consistency, or do you mean firm in the way you do training and interact with him/her?
We've had Akitas for years, they are very loyal and comforting to have around. One thing we've found is they'd rather be laid out on cool concrete or snow than in a centrally heated house, they do not like the heat and with that thick coat you can see why. A hot Akita can be a cranky beast and best avoided.
Were do you live? We are in Cyprus and we have hot summers. We walk very early in the morning and very late in the afternoon in the woods. We avoid asphalt as it is hot. Aimi and Bakudai, the Akitas, spend the day in the house, laying on the marbles under the air condition :)
Apologies for raining down on your party, but apart from the nice editing and breed’s character description, viewers need to ask what it does for the credibility, when the video is quite abundant of mistakes. For starters: - The Shiba Inu puppy seen twice (at 0:35 and 2:18) - The mentioning of there being only two Hachikou statues (when there are two more in Hachikou’s birthplace Odate, and one more in his owner professor’s Ueno Hidesaburou’s birthplace Hisai), - The map of Akita prefecture in the video, which doesn’t show Akita prefecture, but the larger area around Akita city, when the breed is from Odate. - The presenter pronouncing matagi dogs as mataji dogs and akita inu as akita inyou - There aren’t two “types” of Akita dogs, they are two breeds. And the list goes on. So full points for intentions, but unfortunately for execution...
Thank you for explaining this clearly and saving me the task of having to do so. You are 100% correct. Furthermore, my ( Japanese) Akita is the most loving, affectionate dog imaginable. He is the therapy dog “ Star” of our clinic making every patient feel happy and special. Sometimes patients just show up without an appointment to get a big hug and Akita kiss from Thor to make their day right!
Carissa Wills Of course. But with all due respect, out of all the countries in the world-nearly 200-they are the only one left to still do so, while the distinction is obvious, not to mention what the country of origin (Japan) does. Plus, judging on the accent of the presenter, this video seems to be a UK production, so...
I believe she is in the UK, I didn’t actually noticed her distinguish them in any particular way that was incorrect. The US and Canada are the only ones who do not distinguish them as separate breeds, but if I’m not mistaken the US is also where the American type is most common and popular.
My sister's ex lived in the Rocky Mountains. One day he got stuck in Denver due to a blizzard (if you don't know Colorado weather there's a saying that explains it - if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes). He was so worried about his Akita (named Bear; it was the brindled type) because he always left the dog out for the day. When he was able to get back home the first thing he did was call for Bear. After a few minutes he saw a huge mound of snow (where the dog house is) rumble and shake, and lo and behold, Bear burst out of the mound running towards him. Not even phased.
I've been around Akitas (both Akita Inu and American Akita) most of my life. When I was in middle school we had a 110-120lb male American Akita named Jack. My family lived in a rural area near a small town, with lots of open fields, forests, hills, etc.. I used to take Jack miles from home and just explore. My parents never worried about my safety because they knew I had the ultimate protector with me.
@@griffin6718 Fun fact all japanese spitz come from the shiba... I feel bad for the shiba that gave birth to a giant ass puppy that would eventually become the akita
Very regal looking dogs. I learned something new today. Thank You for doing this video. Edited after watching the full video. Awesome story. Ma'am, you are oh so correct about each dog having their own personality. Having 5 dogs myself...each one has it's separate personality. Also, our 2 cats have their own personality.
I've had a lot of Akitas and akita mixes. They are definitely my favorite breed. If you know what you're doing and train them from puppyhood, they will almost never give you problems. Three of mine were absolute nanny dogs too. I currently have a male that won't leave the baby's side for anything! Such sweet guardians. ♡♡♡
There are a lot of different names for these breeds. like for example i live in the Netherlands and we call the mixed type the American Akita and the red white one the Akita. other countrys even put the word inu in the breed name which means dog. What i think is actually pretty dumb because you say basically dog twice in a sentence when you talk about them.
Loyalty and independence are two different things. You can be an independent person and still be loyal to your friend. Same can be said for these dogs.
Listen, guys, I hear what ya saying. Believe me, I like dogs. I like them alot more than I like cats for dang sure. But here's a brief list of examples of stuff that wouldn't wait by a train station for 9 years: - A cat. - Your ex. - The most stalkerishly stalker in the world. I'm just giving tough love. If your boy's girl breaks up with your boy, and your boy is hung up on it for 9 years, that's not something to be praised as loyalty. That's just messed up. The proper friend advice would be to move him forward, because there's something wrong there. As for this particular story, seeing as it's Japan and its history of the way they treat women, who the heck knows what it's really about. It might be a veiled lesson to wives to stay faithful and true and grieve their husbands forever no matter how long after the husbands have passed away.
My dog is an Akita. He's very independent, but I wouldn't call him aloof. He is pretty intimidating and gives off an air of "I'm better than you", but he is very loyal and loving with me. He even gets pretty jealous if I play with another dog, which is always adorable.
I would love to see the Alabai or CAO they used to be called the Pyrenean mountain dog but that's an incorrect name due to natives saying that version of the breed is not pure bred and a mixture of other breeds. So please do a video on the Alabai.
Thank you I've had Akitas all my life, We raised them and would show them..I've raised Akitas with my children, couldn't imagine not having one ..They are also very protective of their human children!!🤗
Pretty sure I spotted Robert at a dog show down south this year, Only noticed him because of his gorgeous Japanese Akita! I'd love a red Japanese Akita to go with my Husky such gorgeous dogs.
I would love to see you cover border collies and Australian sheepdogs, maybe not the most exotic of breeds but true hard working, intelligent and amazing dogs (yup I am a collie dad lol)
I have an Akita male, Japanese Akita female and two of their pups, male and female twins who are now 9 years old. They all live with me and have free run of the house 24 hours a day and look after the house whilst I'm out at work, never any friction between any of them, we are a close knit family unit. They are extremely laid back and quiet but once out walking are very protective of each other and me, tolerating and mostly ignoring other dogs as long as they keep their distance , they will assess other humans as they approach and either will or will not allow themselves to be stroked depending on their assessment. If someone asks to stroke them then, depending on the dogs body language, I let them or politely decline. Unfortunately Akita's like many other large breed dogs suffer from sensationalist media when things go wrong, the reasons why things went wrong are never covered, but most of the time it's a dog who has tried to signal that it's uncomfortable with a situation and been ignored. Thank you Anneka for doing this piece on our wonderful breed.
It's interesting that Akita, have a reputation for being aloof, our boy loves people and most I've met are pretty friendly too. They are great dogs stubborn af though lol.
FINALLY!! I was waiting for this. I like the Japanese breed better. Seems they would be healthier in the long run too... Also because of it's lower weight - makes for a better hiking partner.
I like the American one better. I live in a country with no mountains,so no hiking. And I prefer the look of an American Akita. Anyways I both freaking love them
Thank you for making this video, we have a 16 month old Husky and we finally met 2 Akita Inu’s at our local off leash park. They are such a beautiful dog 💗
That was a good representation of the Akita. I have an American Akita, and had an Akita border collie before... Very special dogs... Thanks... A lot of the time it's about them, but when it's about you; you've been picked by them, like the Hachi movie with Richard Geere.
Wow, they are so beautiful! I just love your show. I love how kind, respectful and welcoming you are with ALL your guests! You are a wonderful, beautiful person and it shows. Thank you for all you do.
I had a male Akita the looks like the one in this video who passed from old age. He was of course much larger then she is. They are a highly intelligent breed. The one thing I disagree with is another dog near never caused him to jump or attack it. He actually never paid it any mind. Now if he had to defend himself, that's an entirely different issue. He was however VERY protective of me and another male (HUMAN) could NOT come near me if he was around. Only the fiancé at the time could.
The diet of the Japanese Akitainu depends on the individual dog’s activity level, health needs, and owner preferences. This breed is prone to allergies so finding the right food ingredients/sources is important as well as ensuring the food is of high quality. Feeding three times a day for puppies and twice a day for adults is suggested.
Cool video! I have an Akita myself (and she is my first dog but I never had problems with that I have studied vet science so dog behaviours is one of the things I know quite a lot about so it was not that hard to train her), and I had a similar thing happen to me in terms of my dog reacting to my suffering. I had a breathing difficulty-attack-thing. It looks like a panic attack but that is not it. I was alone in the house with my dog, she was probably only 6 months old then, and I couldn't breathe. I couldn't move or anything just wheezed. She ran towards me as I was lying on my couch and started to lick my hand and then climbed on the couch to lick my face as if trying to keep me conscious so that I won't pass out. She is taught never to take anything from the table but that one time she reached over and picked up my phone and gave it to me. I rang my sister after which I was fine when she came home. But I was so shocked by then I thought "How in the world my dog knew, first to keep me conscious and two to give me my phone???" Till this day I don't know if she understood what my phone is for or was she in a panic trying to give me anything that might help. But this only showed how intelligent and caring about their owners those dogs really are :D
@@RobertStuhldreer Right back at you. It is so nice to see that Akitas are seen as kind and caring dogs and not just hunting/aggressive/fighting/guarding ones. It is really refreshing! And I agree, wholeheartedly, they really are underestimated, which is just sad.

It should be said about the Japanese Akita Inu that they are different than most other dogs in that they do not accumulate but mirror. A lot of them have ended up in pounds because their breeders did not tell the owners about that - and some, sadly, do not even know themselves. Most dog breeds accumulate. They react to triggers and treats from their owners. When a dog does not obye and the owner become louder and more strict the dog reacts with submission. A Japanese Akita will see that and learn that to get what it wants it has to become aggressive - mirror the behavior of the owner. That is the most common mistake made by owners. An Akita will be kind and friendly with dogs and humans if the owner is. If the owner is standoffish or even aggressive towards other dogs or people the dog will do the same. The only difference is fear because of course the dog will then protect. It is the most wonderful breed I ever encountered. Both my Japanese Akitas are kind ald loving dogs and love to play around with other dogs. A big difference though is when they play with their own offspring. Their own puppies always get special treatment even after years apart.
One of my neighbors has two akita dogs and they are so calm and well behaved. When their owner is talking to someone they will just lie down at his feet until he starts walking again. They are always without a leash, one of them is an older dog and the other approximately 1 year old, knowing this information makes me respect him even more ❤
Idunno. My favorite kind of breed is the large mountain shepherds you encounter in all mountainous regions from the Caucasus to the Pyrenees, across the Carpathians and the Balkans. They were not bred for bear hunting, but they definitely were bred to be able to fend off bears - without any help from humans, if needed. They're also very protective and loyal. These dogs, however, if treated unkind, become monsters. They're a mirror of their masters. I've known a few cases in which their masters, after having neglected and mistreated the dog while it was growing up, became scared of the dog to the extent that they were fearing getting near the dog to give them water and food, because the dog was copying the master's aggressive and violent behavior, and also the master's lack of loyalty and behavioral consistency. From what you tell, there's a difference, though. A large European shepherd, if raised well, will literally live for their master. You don't need to punish the dog. You just have to turn your back on it. It will be worse for the dog than a thousand beatings. (Of course, you have to mean it - they can sniff acting immediately and will show that they don't take you seriously.) Akitas, you say, will use their master's emotions for emotional blackmail. Is that right?
Another informative and entertaining video from the absolute best animal and dog breed channel. Keep em coming!! If you can do a show on the magnificent Great Pyrenees, I’m sure all will appreciate it. Thanks so much.
It took me 8 minutes to realize she was saying "inu". I was confused as hell as to why she was saying "Akita in you"... If you don't know how to pronounce the word inu (or any other foreign word for that matter), type in the word on Google Translate and click that little play button.
Brilliant!!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍 Akitas are NOT for evryone..........thats why there are SO MANY rescue Akitas here in the uk. Mine passed away 6 months ago...had him for 8 years.... If you are not patient THEN DO NOT GET AN AKITA!!!!! NO ALPHA MALE CRAP lol you have to earn their respect!!!!! As the man says they are hyper intelligent.. My akita used to do"MOUTHING" on my hand....they do it for 2 reasons 1. They sense something is amiss.. 2. they want to play..... In my humble opinion mouthing is to be supported as it helps bonding.. Love the chanel Keep up the good work Jon ❤
My cousins had an Akita. It would walk beside my younger cousins and siblings when they were learning to walk. It was fiercely protective of us as kids. Someone broke into the house once, and she bit his leg clean off.
Best dog I've ever had, and it's not even close. Not for everyone, not for every living situation but if you click with an Akita the bond goes far beyond anything you have ever had with a dog before.
This owner is very knowledgeable. He does provide insights and first-hand experience about Akitas that I normally dont know even if i read something about akitas. If only the host explored more on his insights
I knew an Akita. He would burp after drinking and honestly he feels like the kind of dog that would watch a sports game and gets mad at the ref for a bad call. Also he would give me grilling advice.
When Animal Watch does a video featuring a dog breed, it always seems to be a large breed of dog. While these videos are enjoyable to watch, it would be great if some of the more misunderstood or rare small and medium sized breeds could also get featured.
I will never forget hachiko i cried when i first watched it and i still cried everytime I watched it. The first dog movie that made me cry so much that even though I've grown up it still hit me. 😭
I have an akita. We adopted him from Battersea dogs home 5 years ago. 2 years after we got him he saved my life. I had a cardiac arrest in the street while out walking him.
Beautiful story that shows the depth to these dogs 🐶
Thank You for sharing. I think they are beautiful. And would love to have. One. I have a huge German shepherd that I think has just a bit of akita in him. Closest I could get to true akita. .

They're the best dogs ever 😥❤
We got our boy Kuma when I was 7, and he passed away right after my 20th bday.
Wow! He had a great and loving life!
I am so relieved by this comment😂😂😂 that’s just like my Akita „Chico“😂
😭😭 I am deeply sorry for your painful loss. May he rest in peace 🌈🐕🌼
Do they really only live for 10 years ?????
Thank you!

Shiba Inu pictures were shown twice as Akita. They kind of look alike, but just notice that the Akitas don't have the red colour going all the way down to their nose, whereas Shibas do.
Very astute observation. People try to pass the puppies off as the same sometimes. You're amazing.
Very true .. you're right
Shibas are wayyyy smaller

Nia Lin Due to time restraints it wasn’t possible to cover everything. You certainly are right that they can be regular Houdinis.
Lol.
You hit it on head . They are true escape artist
No shit, my brothers is a little Houdini. Sorry a large fat Houdini
Wait til you see honey badgers, they're the true escape artists. They're cleverer (or the same) as monkeys!

I love my American Akita. She is gentle, well mannered, show some much love and intelligent
@Jaime Alonzo I don't think they specify the exact origin of the American Akita. Not that I know of at least.
Careful calling it that. Apparently it’s racist to refer to your dog as it’s proper breed
@@Khenfu_Cake no they don't they are called only American Akita.
No. Not a Japanese Akita and Akita. Akita and American Akita, Please.
Rika G I don’t think many people realise “inu” translates to dog in Japanese, yet they insist on saying Japanese Akita inu.. just as annoying as recalling the American Akita as the Akita lol, I have one myself btw but the original Akita is definitely the Japanese.
What if you don't speak Japanese ?
Bill W nor do I, but I like to educate myself, so I researched what it meant before I owned my first one. Even dogs I’m not interested in buying I research. Suppose most people are just too ignorant.
I thought the same thing... It originated in Japan - so the American one needs the additional label
Thank you!
Red white was Akita, the dark one was American Akita.
@Calpurnia L shiba is not akita. Different breed.
Yes! The Akitas come in three colors, red, white, and brindle. The American Akitas can come in any color and most of the times have a black mask on their face.
The Danger Zone , Hi, in the UK where I live and filmed this the two breeds as prescribed by our Kennel Club is:
1. Akita (like Flora)
2. Japanese Akita Inu (like Kin)
There are called by differing names in other countries.
@@RobertStuhldreer It is Akita and American Akita. Akita being the original breed and American Akita which is a mixed breed. Don't confuse people.
@Calpurnia L you dont know anything about akitas dont you??
I have a deep affinity for the Akita, which probably stems from my obsession with all things Japanese. Rob and I suffer from a similar medical ailment. My days are plagued with chronic non-epileptic seizures that mimic epilepsy in astounding ways. The fact that Rob has so clearly benefited from a service dog brings me hope.
The Akita Inu is gorgeous! So much smaller than the American Akita and more fox-like, like the Shiba Inu.
the face is more fox - but the body is more wolf
Male’s can be dominant/protective towards strange kids coming to your house.

jaee Juliet how are you doing now? i lost mine three days ago, and I never thought anything could make me hurt this much.
Take me please 🐶

I was afraid of akitas for 16 years before one day in 2017 i met an akita at a park, and it was the most adorable and loving dog ive ever met, now i want an akita
Damn, you could have had that dog killed and sued the owner for all that he/she is worth.
@@chengliu872 I imagine the dog would have been as emergency services must have been involved to help her nose out
Omg I’m sorry
Amazing.. Thankyou for sharing 🙏🐶

So, we have Sushi which we have avocado in them, and we have the Japanese sushi without avocado.
Calling the mix breed as “Akita” and the Japanese one as “Japanese Akita” is so wrong.. like wtf
You know what really is wrong? Inbreeding dogs just so they look a certain way.
@Eddy Juana lolol I love how you put american first when they are english
I have owned 7 Akitas and fostered many. I can’t imagine life without one ❤️
This may be random but I have owned now an Akita inu puppy for a month, as a more exprienced owner do you have any advice?
Beautiful 🐶👍
King.a 99 socializing and training are so important for this breed. Expose your puppy to many new places and people when they are young and after vaccinations of course. Training classes are great too! Also get them used to grooming they she’s a lot! I have a video on my channel I made years that shows a little of how they shed. I’m hoping to make an updated video soon too :)
@@SkylineAkitas thank you so much for taking your time to answer me! My akita is getting her third shot next week and after that I plan on working more with socializing her but for now she loves all people and dogs and I wish to keep it that way.

Emzotic Thank you. I’m glad that you enjoyed this episode. It was great fun making it.
Beautiful dogs. Loved hearing about how she spots a seizure, that’s amazing.
Yes God gave dog as a help to man... I knew someone who had a little toy dog that detected when there cancer return... It would go to that part of the body and moan and whine... The owner knew... Sadly the disease took their life - but it was amazing still. As to the seizures - I've heard that of several breeds.

You are welcome 👍❤️
Why not for the faint of heart ? I keep hearing things like that and I'm curious why ?
For starters:
- The Shiba Inu puppy seen twice (at 0:35 and 2:18)
- The mentioning of there being only two Hachikou statues (when there are two more in Hachikou’s birthplace Odate, and one more in his owner professor’s Ueno Hidesaburou’s birthplace Hisai),
- The map of Akita prefecture in the video, which doesn’t show Akita prefecture, but the larger area around Akita city, when the breed is from Odate.
- The presenter pronouncing matagi dogs as mataji dogs and akita inu as akita inyou
- There aren’t two “types” of Akita dogs, they are two breeds.
And the list goes on. So full points for intentions, but unfortunately for execution...
Kurenai No Kaze please do my monthly reports for work 😂
Thank you for explaining this clearly and saving me the task of having to do so.
The type vs breed depends on where you are from. America does not actually separate them as a breed through the AKC but only as type.

Why do you call the mixed-breed Akita an Akita and the pure blood Akita a Japanese Akita? Isn’t it supposed to be the other way around?
Pande Sal I Was thinking the same
Hehe pure blood harry potter I'm sorry.
The Akita is mixed not so The Japanese Akita Inu. Got a problem with that take it up with Japan.
No such thing as a pure bred dog they all started as wolves and those are different types.

Akita: "I am independent."
Also Akita: waited 9 years by a train station for his master.
Loyalty and independence are two different things. You can be an independent person and still be loyal to your friend. Same can be said for these dogs.
he was independent. The Prof's family tried to bring Hachiko back. But Hachi would always free himself and come to the station
Hachiko was loyal because he respected his master. Weak owners will get no respect from an akita.
Listen, guys, I hear what ya saying. Believe me, I like dogs. I like them alot more than I like cats for dang sure. But here's a brief list of examples of stuff that wouldn't wait by a train station for 9 years:
- A cat.
Ultimate yanderes!
My dog is an Akita. He's very independent, but I wouldn't call him aloof. He is pretty intimidating and gives off an air of "I'm better than you", but he is very loyal and loving with me. He even gets pretty jealous if I play with another dog, which is always adorable.

Yeah, that was pretty disappointing, actually. They do have their similarities, but it's pretty obvious that the research was lacking, a bit.
They should have put more effort on the video/documentary for this majestic breed
I thogiut that too but I think they're just small ones of the Akita Inu, really simular
At what point in the video was it?????
A shiba and akita look alike as puppies

What food do you recommend for a puppy? And then after in adulthood?
They're definitely two different breeds - the Akita and the American Akita. Both beautiful!
@Calpurnia L Akita and Shiba are different, stupedo
Meh Thank you for sharing your story. I feel dogs are hugely underestimated.

That's really interesting indeed
Fantastic work again. Been looking forward to you doing an Akita episode.
