    Hot off the heels of Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel's Black Panther just came out on digital download. I thought the character has a lot of potential, but to me this movie had one core problem which prevented it from reaching the level of quality it possibly could have... a problem I like to call the Superman dilemma.
    I'll try to make more videos over the summer for you guys. Definitely about upcoming releases like Deadpool and Solo: A Star Wars Story. You can also tell me any ideas you'd want me to cover.

      He takes a heartshaped herb that gives him superpowers, and as previously stated he defeats the antagonist at the conclusion of the movie with both suits disabled, having previously suffered mortal wounds, presumably making him physically less capable than the antagonist, despite his advanced healing so... He's plenty without the suit, including King of Wakanda.

    I think the best way to approach overpowered characters is to make them vulnerable in other ways, risk of losing friends, family, social status, ect. Like with Dr. Manhattan. Or put them in situations that challenge their motives, like spiderman 2.

    • @philipseitz95
      @philipseitz95 3 роки тому +48

      I disagree, the mere existence of the Superman dilemma is a trap that inevitably drains interest faster than watching grass grow. To write your character into this scenario is like taking a plane that can go anywhere (from a story perspective) and trading it in for a train that can only go back and forth on a track.
      Take Superman for example, the only way his stories are any good is if someone has kryptonite, can destroy the world, or endanger his loved ones. Then they rinse, repeat, rinse repeat , rinse repeat again and again and again. Then at the point you have two options, keep raising the external stakes (collateral damage, world at risk ,etc.) or break the laws of the character you first put in motion. (Like they did in infinity war and end-game) but if you do either the audience is still not fully convinced ...it’s difficult for the audience to buy in once the laws have been established making them overpowered, you might be able to convince them eventually but it’s a trap that cuts your options down regardless... for example black panther will never have a high stakes battle without his suit. To have that be the case for your character is a problem.... or for Superman, the only way his battle is tense is if kryptonite is involved. It becomes way too constricted and boring.
      Dr Manhattan was not a main character and was effectively separated from the main plot. Allowing tension to take place elsewhere. If they were to make more than one movie with Manhattan then his arc would be too much the same every time.
      Spider-Man 2 has none of this dilemma however

    • @fredriddles1763

      @@philipseitz95 The fact that Superman is so powerful helps to avoid another common pitfall in writers: thinking that a physical, violent threat can be the only source of conflict in a story.
      I actually like Superman as a character because his pysical power forces the writers working with him to find more creative ways of challenging him. I remember one comic where Superman was wrestling with the thought that his prescence on Earth is somehow stunting humanity's growth, making them dependent on him for solving their problems. He is forced to confront this problem when he encounters a town full of farmers who are too scared to confront their brutal taskmaster, but are more than content to let Superman show up to potentially arrest him. In this situation Superman is faced with two bad options: stop the taskmaster and further fuel the farmers' apathy, or leave them alone to forever suffer under the taskmaster's whip. In other words, he has to save somebody while also finding a way of teaching them to not wait around for someone to save them. Its a paradox that makes for a wonderfully conflict ridden story!
      Supermans relationship with Lois Lane has also made for some great stories. Before Superman revealed his secret identity to her he had a big problem where she loves Superman, but he can only be with her as Clark Kent since that is who he really is and because he wants her to love him for that rather than for being a big buff super hero. You can't just punch your way to someones heart! (Well, you can, but not if you want to marry them).
      Last among my favorite stories featuring Superman is called 'the man who has everything.' It features a big bad monster that can kill earth like many other Superman stories. What I found interesting about it is that it features a parasite that can trigger a hallucination that grants a person their heart's greatest desires. In Superman's case, this caused him to dream that he was alive on an un-exploded Krypton. There was conflict in the form of the dream being everything that his heart could desire, but at the same time he also knew deep down that he needed to find the emotional strength to leave it in order to wake up in the real world and beat the badguy. He later equated waking up from the dream to "ripping my own arm off." You might argue that its unrealistic for a parasite to have any such effect on him, but we live in a world where microscopic organisms can kill beasts as big as humans so I wouldn't bet against nature's ability to find creatures that can challenge any living organism, even a kryptonian one.
      There are pysical conflicts, social conflicts, and internal conflicts. Crafting great Superman stories, or just any story really, is about recognizing the different ways that you can test your main character and balancing them properly. Even non-powered characters like Batman or Spiderman would be really boring if all of their problems were external or physical threats. In the latter case, everything exciting about that character stems from the juggling act between his life as a Peter and his life as Spiderman, which is a distinctly non-combat based conflict.

    • @jasonberryman1035
      @jasonberryman1035 3 роки тому +3

      @KAI PHAN I think another problem was none of the threats he faces asides from Kilmonger are actually a real threat. A character being powerful isn’t bad in of itself, for example most people would agree someone like Thor, Dr. Strange and Wanda are stronger than BP and there are many other superheroes ranging from Spiderman to Aquaman who have similar levels of durability and strength to him however the difference is all of the characters I just stated face serious stakes and threats appropriate to their own strength throughout their respective movies. That’s why both a Batman film and a Thor film could have equal stakes and dangers to the protagonists despite the significant power gap between Batman and Thor.

      @@animeking830 Yes it does, from what I remember of the movie Carol is very overpowered and can do nothing wrong, the only thing holding her back are men who are mean to her. But the movie also has storytelling issues with pacing and general tone, like fury being the comic relief when his character was set up in multiple installments as a very serious person not to be messed with (don’t get me started on the eyepatch backstory screw up) and the very heavy handed obvious political allegories about immigrants (the aliens being the immigrants) it just comes of as not well thought out and inappropriately sided instead of a neutral depiction of a heavy topic like a good movie would. It alienates the audience, talks down to them.
      But to me the worst flaw the movie had is that it was incredibly boring and had absolutely no fun superhero movie antics at all, I went to see it with some friends and we were really exited ready to give it the best possible chance and it just sucked we almost fell asleep, luckily Shazam was also showing that night and we snuck in right after. I don't get where they were trying to go with her character, but she seemed always to be stand-off-ish. if i remember correctly the writers useda a rather heavy hand with the feminist themes in that movie, and it shows.
      "All her life they've been telling her that she can't do something because she's a "gurl"...but now she's showing them. she's the most powerful hero ever" The connections she has to other people feel absolutely artificial, even to her best friend and her condescending way of interacting with others, just makes me want to punch the screen.

So we could see him taking peaces of it off, that would blow up releasing power, and then he would have to fight with peaces of the suit missing. Or maybe the suit would kill a normal person because viburnum is somehow toxic, but he needs his king juice to fight that off. Then he could have the iron man 2 dilemma.

Did the vibranium whisper it into their ears? Telepathic contact with super-sciency aliens? Centuries of scientific experimentation? The movie was very vague on the particulars of this "utopia". (not trying to be a wise-ass, just pointing out some plot holes that was really necessary to have included in order to make it seem realistic in how it become what it did). Well, kinda true, but with the Superman dilemma, it's extremely easy to slide into the little brother argument, like "I'm invincible to anything in the world!" - "And I have bullets from another world that pierce everything!" - "And I have a psychic shield that stops all bullets from all worlds mid-air!" - "And I have the ability to turn off all psychic shields!" - "And I...", which is a huge problem for superhero plots, since they've already established the character's powers they have to invent stupid reasons why they don't work. Or the other way around, find dumber and dumber ways to make their power work in a challenging environment. It's called "plot armour" or something of the sort. It's better to create a character with no real OP superpowers, just powerful enough to compete with other characters, and always with some weaknesses. The "Superman isn't invincible to a special green glowing rock from outer space" shit isn't that impressive IMHO. And thus, basically all the showdowns between superheroes resort to that little brother argument of whose power works better and whose doesn't. To make it interesting, you really need to be creative. That's why kryptonite is stupid, because green isn't a creative colour. MARVEL has the OP problem with basically any character, with some plot devices they can defeat anyone and everyone. Like, for example, Quicksilver. He's so fast he can kill everyone before we even blink. So, to make him not OPAF, the writers have to make every villain be able to react as fast, or disable him somehow. I honestly feel like the superhero lineups of MARVEL and DC are just competitions on "who can make a cooler OP ability" that have turned into just stacking new OP shit on top of each other. Like stoneless Thanos, he's stronger than the Hulk, no one can basically hurt him, and so on. With stones that literally give him abilities to bend reality to his will, go anywhere, pull down a fucking moon, reverse time, control minds, and do whatever the Soul stone can, he's like a 6-time OP champion, so in order to beat him, Thor gets a new toy, and it somehow can push through all Anus' defences. See my point? Let's put it this way: how does Thanos with the green stone even get hit? How does Thanos with the red stone or Loki with his clone power ever get hit? Can't he calmly stand somewhere, while everyone think he's in another place and try to hit the clone? How can Spider-Man get hit physically, if he has slo-mo reflexes and literally the power to predict the future? See my point? That quickly turns into basically a pp measuring contest, and only a good writer can make it look reasonable and justified

Yeah, yeah, I know, it's part of their culture... Fine! If you like this movie that's fine. I didnt see blacks versus whites... I also think you are wrong in the point about Age of Ultron; Ultron doesn't want a proxy race war, in the sense that he is not making arguments about robot superiority, he simply thinks humans are the cause of all their own problems and wants to 'save them' by wiping them out. But even if he was doing that, I think that movie specifically does a better job of making Ultron look like he's in the wrong so it doesn't make sense that if I criticise Black Panther I have to do the same for all other movies...

      Joker as a physical threat is highly inconsistent from interpretation to interpretation, as it seems no one has really been able to come to an agreement on what he is physically capable of. In some interpretations such as in Endgame he's actually a highly capable fighter who fights in a highly chaotic and informal, but remarkably quick manner, that is uniquely unlike those of other characters. It comes off as the fighting style of someone who has exceptionally fast reflexes and a wealth of fighting experience, but never actually received or listened to lessons on any formal techniques. I personally prefer this interpretation better as it seems consistent with his slender frame and overall chaotic nature, and gives him a stronger presence when in the same room as Batman.

THAT'S the Black Panther. No ands, ifs or buts about it. However, they then try to scale it back and give him an origin story and show him becoming the Black Panther. That was a poor move. This is like saying what would happen if
    Superman fought Zod. Same power set same skill, who wins. In Superman 2, he won by removing their powers. Same here.
    This is a battle of stakes. Who is the better man without the suit. I have to disagree, there are stakes, they are just personal and he has to go on a journey of truth. They build up in act 1 and 2 that he is Superman but only with the suit. As in a feudal society killmonger had the right to challenge for the throne and does. T'Challa loses. Those are stakes. It's not about the battles with claw, in fact those are to prove the opposite so he has father to fall and make the fall father. And the symbolic fall from the cliff echoes this.
    To me these are deeper stakes. Eventually, he realizes that with the suit, neither will win and must take him to the only place where the suit if ineffective and basically reenact the battle for the kingship.
    These are huge stakes, but they are personal. And must be viewed from the perspective of His journey for the truth. Once he understands what he must do and he has something to fight for, the becomes the man he's supposed to be.
    This movie didn't do great because of politics. It did great because there are stakes and it appealed to the broader audience.
    Fyi - I'm not a person of color and it is one of my favorite outings not because of politics, not because of the director or cast, but because I see high stakes, a path T'Challa must go through to learn the truth and confront and then decide the man he's gonna be. To me, this made him relatable and fully fledged out.

    if you think about it as a Video Game, for example in the case of Captain Marvel, you could fix the character by simply giving her stamina and each time she uses her powers, she gets tired, and has to rest for a while.... instead of being able to shoot lasers all she wants... that will make her actions more strategic and you know that if she uses it a lot she will be vulnerable again.
    Just like Iron Man's suits, they also run out of battery.

Stark also had to continually tweak feature sets and functionality, as well as storage options. For example, he had shield bracelets (against Loki) but the suit itself has no shielding. He can use repulsors, but only if it is powered by the ARC reactor. The ARC reactor also seems to be like a battery - it needs to be changed from time to time. He has to tweak the ARC reactor because the original was slowly killing him. There's always one issue after another, and this is the MCU's go-to technical guy we are talking about.

      st n Strength is not the problem, it’s invulnerability! Thor is not a problem as he can still be harmed by many attacks. Hulk is more of a problem, but he has offsetting weaknesses like being dumb and Banner being, well just a human. Tell me one enemy in all of Black Panther that actually was able to harm him in his suit. Hell, not even Killmonger could do it.
      All in all Black Panther was a good movie and with the „no tech involved“ battle and the mirror battle they were able to work around this issue for most parts. But it is definitely an issue in the movie.
      Captain Marvel is a bit similar, but more in line with Wonder Woman: right when the final battle starts, she becomes invincible. Not even a full hit by the Kree killteam can even harm her anymore. That is a disaster as it kills tension. Why? The movie was good before and none of her powers demand complete and utter invulnerability, so why was it necessary?

Not understanding the juxtaposition of the Batman suit and the Black Panther suit? Whereas it was stated that the Batman suit is kavler versus Black Panther's suit being Alien. Moreover, the alien material was stated to be the strongest material on earth. Now as far as the Superman dilemma that you failed to comprehend is that the basis of Black Panther is to protect his people, culture, and homeland. So to make him vulnerable is by attacking his homeland and immediate family, which is his livelihood. The stacks are not the suit or powers, as it is his nation. Was Wakanda truly endanger by Killmonger, the CIA agent, or the thieves of their Alien technology? In conclusion, it wasn't a character defect or the superman dilemma, as it is that you truly didn't connect to the story that is given by an animated introduction. LOL. So much for your ego jumping out of pocket in stating, "I can fix his superman dilemma, but you'll have to pay me for it." This is a classic sign of not seeing the bigger picture. Black Panther is strong and his suit even more so but sit back and realize who he is dealing with in both movies he has appeared in. In Civil War, a good chunk of super powered beings, in Infinity War, Thanos with various Infinity Stones and his minions, and finally in his own movie, humans. The point of Black Panther's movie is to give the hero something to fight for that isn't like anyone else. Black Panther is fighting for his people, his nation and their safety. Unlike Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, etc. Black Panther has political responsibilities outside of being a hero, he is a king.
    Essentially what I'm trying to state is that Black Panther seems powerful in his own movie because that isn't exactly the focus of the film, fighting the bad guy I mean. The point of the film is more or less character development because we know from past films that T'Challa doesn't think he is ready nor responsible enough to dawn the suit of Black Panther and be a just leader. This is very in line with the comics as when Black Panther is coughed between a moral challenge he often asks the spirits of the past Black Panthers what to do and all have the same answer 'Do what is best for Wakanda'.

    If Black Panther's powers come from a plant that they can just grow, and his suit is made of vibranium which their country is sitting on a literal mountain of, why don't they just make an army of supersoldiers with indestructible armor? If it's because they're just oh-so peaceful, why do they have an entire warrior class and decide who gets to be king through trials of combat? That sounds like a pretty violent and war-like society to me, especially when you consider the opening monologue where they talk about how they were going around conquering rival tribes before they decided to hide their city.
    And on the subject of trials by combat, why didn't Black Panther just refuse Killmonger's challenge? Why voluntarily give up his powers and risk getting killed by a guy who everyone knew was a trained killer, and let Wakanda fall under the rule of a dangerous, war-mongering psychopath? That seemed like a pretty stupid, ego-driven decision.
    And for that matter, why did Killmonger even need to kill Andy Serkis to gain access to Wakanda to challenge Black Panther? He apparently knew where Wakanda was, and all he had to do was show the people outside his royal medallion thing.

The super soldier part is a point of no one can challenge you if you are given then mantle and title to be king and take with it the powers of the plant. If he is defeated the next king can do as he please as no one can challenge him when he has super strength or at least no one is a real threat.(you are suppose to give up the powers during trial to prove even without it you are worthy). If everyone is given abilities then it will be easier for people to just come in and try to take the mantle of king.

      First off, there's only a certain amount of these 'plants' in the movie; not enough for an entire army. Second of all, Vibranium is already being used in armors and weapons for soldiers. Have you payed attention to the movie?
      Did you even realize that Wakanda closed off its borders (not allowing surrounding nations to influence them)? Since there was no outward influence, there was still a monarchy going on and the people didn't seem to disturb the monarchy (because they were seemingly content, or the monarchy just has too much power). Wakandans are heavily influenced by their tradition, and they have their own sets of norms. What you're doing is comparing these norms with the norms your country has, and bash on them without properly finding a reason they follow these violent norms.
      The movie was slightly good, still not one of the best movies I've ever seen. Really bad that they allowed a black superhero to be the prince of a (former) racist nation. People shouldn't even care about the skin color of a superhero. May he/she be Chinese or purple (as Thanos... though he's a super-villain). They should care about the plot and the enjoyment they get from the movie even more.

I usually like Filmento's videos (he's gotten better throughout the years), but this one in particular shows bias, ignorance and misinformation. No one's calling anyone racist, but not understanding this film's motivations shows a close mind and a strong detachment from certain cultures and the past and present struggles of some people around the world.

      @@HowdyItLovll 1. He first mentions the villain, and how it "didn't click with him, personally", which says absolutely nothing about the film or the character's motivations and development, only about Filmento's detachment from the situations presented, which is a fair statement, not everyone will relate, but doesn't really put down the movie or the character himself in any way. You can present a case on which Marvel villain is actually the best, but there must be a reason why so many people like Killmonger so much, so saying "he's not a good villain because I don't relate" doesn't really mean anything.
      2. Stakes. This video spends most of it's time obsessing over Black Panther's vibranium suit. Talking about how it lacks tensions because Black Panther is never in any real danger, but it's such a close minded view. This movie is not about the suit, and the villains' motive is not specifically killing Black Panther, they are beyond that. I never felt Black Panther was ever in danger, but the tensions was there, the stakes felt real. Internal struggles on how to lead Wakanda and manage it's resources, ideological tension between characters that ultimately cause a civil war, opposing views on what justice looks like, I could go on. Black Panther was invincible and yet was ultimately defeated: not only was he bested in combat by Killmonger, but he actually changed his position on how to best lead Wakanda after learning Killmonger's story. The movie has more layers than Filmento gives it credit for, and Black Panther's vulnerability go beyond face value.
      He uses Batman as an opposing example, yet the scenes that were presented in the video weren't that strong to being with. The best part of Dark Knight is NOT when he gets shot by Harvey. Heck, I didn't even remember that part. Not once did I think anyone would kill Batman, because that's not what the movie was about. Yes, he's human and can technically die from a gunshot, but I don't think anyone ever thought "oh no, Batman could die from a gun wound at anytime during this movie". The idea that Black Panther is lackluster because he's invincible holds even less ground when you actually think about the fact that most superheroes in superhero movies ARE invincible. Not because of their powers or their suits, but just because the story never allows it. Before Infinity War, the heroes are always assumed to win, so in the audience's mind, they're never in any real danger anyways. The stakes are in their friends, family, the people they try to protect, the ideas they want to represent, etc. So to judge Black Panther solely on his vulnerability, or lack thereof, is not only to judge it on different standards than any other superhero movie, but to misinterpret what the movie is actually about.
      3.Emotional and cultural investment: The following condescending lines from the video also support the idea that his criticism of the movie isn't him having a problem with the movie itself, but rather simply being disconected from the themes and characters presented in the movie: "When the Iron Man armor is gone, we will still have Tony Stark being Tony Stark, but without the Panther suit, all that's seem to remain... isn't anything too special" "To be fair, Black Panther isn't completely devoid of emotional stakes" "everyone can only watch in extreme sadness, and me, I mainly have a couple of different things going through my mind (...) who exactly is this guy again?". They could very well be honest opinions and reactions to the movie, but in the video they are presented without much evidence to back it up, and comes off as simple disinterest and nothing more. He doesn't explain why he finds Tony Stark interesting but not T'Challa. He doesn't explain what scene (or lack thereof) or what cinematography decision made him not care about Zuri. He doesn't explain why he doesn't care at all, he just says he doesn't care. Talk about telling and not showing.
      You can have your opinions about movies, you can like and not like whatever you want. It doesn't make anyone racist or not racist. There are many good videos in FIlmento's channel where he studies in-depth many issues in many movies, but that's not the case here. I don't think it's a perfect movie. I thought the 3rd act was weaker than the rest of the movie, and the cgi was subpar compared to the impressive visual effects of other Marvel movies. There can be objective criticism pointing out actual flaws of this movie, and I'll gladly listen. However, this video is nothing more than FIlmento saying "I don't like it, can't relate".

    Under the circumstances of a normal superhero movie, I'd agree with you, but the vulnerability in Black Panther isn't meant to be physical.
    The wakandans are vulnerable in the sense that they don't want their materials to go to the rest of the world. The writers very clearly understood the superman dilemma and took measures to find vulnerablility elsewhere.
    Excluding the fights to become black panther/king, we are never worried that they'l die. We're worried that the power of vibranium will be put in the wrong hands.

  • @timy9197

    The stakes of black panther is centered the state of Wakanda. Not about whether or not T'chala would die. This is a flaw in criticism who thinks tension only has to do with hurting the hero. The story puts people he cares in danger. That's what they do in plenty of stories. They do it in plenty superman stories. They even do it in the Netflix show Jessica Jones and that had plenty of tension.

      Valid point, then again they end up opening up Wakanda anyway with no explanation, maybe not to the scale the baddy wanted it to go, but it left me with a feeling of "I didn't learn anything, but let's go with it because it doesn't sound so bad after all".
      Idk, if it was out of respect to the baddy, the least they could've done was make BP say "btw before you die, I'm actually gonna help people from here on out so don't you worry m8".

    • @cat_jk00
      @cat_jk00 6 років тому +59

      Ti My What would be good is if Wakanda was set up as a place that actually mattered. We are shown so little of it that it lacks a sense of place. And I'm not saying those CGI establishing shots, I mean actual development as a place. Everytime we go down to the ground level it is either throne rooms, mines, the waterfall, or a single street that they use twice. If the movie is about the stakes of Wakanda, we should be given a reason to care about Wakanda other than it looking cool

      +Colt Krieger I mean, immersion is nice and all but the people who live there are more important than the locations filmed. I didn't mean Wakanda literally I meant Wakanda the people. This is a story about people defending their home and establishing personal and family relationships of the people responsible with protecting it was the thing it focused on the most.

    Glad we're admitting the movie wasn't the "Best movie of all time" now, but I don't think the solution for making higher or better stakes and tension is with his giving Black Panther something that makes his invincibility moot. They do the same in Luke Cage and Superman and it doesn't really make the story more interesting or compelling.
    The stakes in the movie we're mostly "Can he beat (insert opponent)?", but if the forces of antagonism targeted his flaws as a character, his family/friends, his standing as King, or his morality more that could solve the problem with tension or stakes and make a better movie. He's invincible, but he's not invulnerable.

    • @JamMastaJeremy
      @JamMastaJeremy 5 років тому +20

      Lol. Antagonists that target his flaws as a character, family, friends, standing as a King, and morality? You mean like.... say.... antagonists who cause him to interrupt his love interest's special mission and inadvertently put her in danger because being royalty has made him selfish and bull-headed to the point where said love interest has a conversation where she explicitly says he needs to change? Or.... maybe... an antagonist who causes an internal conflict on how Wakanda should be ruled which divides his nation between those who support him and those who oppose? Or.... say.... an antagonist whose actions make him rethink everything he knows about both his father and his kingship? Or.... even.... an antagonist literally challenging his throne, and T'Challa bypassing both cultural ritual and conventional wisdom by rushing to accept the challenge? Just imagine all those stakes we could have had if only the movie was better. Just imagine.

      And how, despite being almost invincible for most of The Dark Knight, Nolan found more ways than one to use the Joker against Batman, being every way you listed.

    Killmonger is a good villain because you can actually understand why he is how he is. Even if you don’t agree with the way he does what he does. And ultimately, T’Challa listens. With Thanos and Loki, they just are the way they are. Their motives just came about (and with Loki, his are all over the place) even if they are good movie villains.
    With that said, you did make some good points.

      I've said this in another video on something with understanding the villains, you could say(being devil's advocate here) that Thanos wanting to bring some sort of balance to the universe is understandable, somewhat noble even. Its just his ends will never justify the basic universal genocide. With Killmonger I can wholeheartedly agree with his POV, but how he goes to carry it out is immoral. At least to normal people standards anyway.
