A lot of the filler losses undercut the progress each character made and harms their arc by having them cycle back a bit or a lot for Joey as his loss to Zigfried in season 5 undermines his performance in the previous seasons. Mai literally gets her progression undone in the same season and sets her back more than battle city did. And to answer the title yes the anime did nerf Atem as his loss to Rafael weakens the ending and kinda sets him back a bit in terms of his overall skill and undones his character growth only for him to learn the same lesson he learned in season 1.
I think a lot of that opinion is due to the fact that the fillers for an important part of his story caused Atem to lose, which in itself ruins the message of the final part a bit. But when you lose with a deck that no one who plays physically likes. Or at least that's how I see it
No disrespect towards the source material, but it was always a bit suspect how they completely ignored that he actually lost a game earlier in the story without the opponent forcing him to throw.(Time out vs Pegasus) Even if the earlier Season 4 loss didn't exist, it actually would have made a lot of sense for the anime to shift the importance from "He needs to learn what losing is" to "he needs proof that he is no longer required in this world" anyways.
I’ve read the manga and watched the anime and this might sound sacrilegious but i honestly prefer the anime. The filler arcs were always fun ngl waking the dragons was my favorite. I will say deck building wise Yami Yugi was nerfed. He had access to really powerful cards ie change of heart, brain control, life shaver and he replaced them with the (adorable) but unnecessary Kuribohs
I think the problem with a lot of the filler losses, is that they genuinely ruin the narrative in some way. Examples: Joey loses to Yugi in Duelist Kingdom even though in the Manga they knew there was no point and so didn't duel. Joey loses to Duke Devlin after placing second in Duelist Kingdom, undoing that progress. Joey losing to Kaiba in Battle City undoes his tournament progress again and seems to place him below Yugi's (and Kaiba's) level, even though Battle City was about him reaching that level. Atem losing fairly to Rafael messes with the ending a bit. Mai losing to Rafael, off-screen no less, undoes the arc she had THE EPISODE PREVIOUS. Joey losing to Zigfried made him look terrible after his great showing in Season 4. Lots of Joey here, the anime really loved cutting his legs out from beneath him.
Okay, Atem's loss to Rafael was anything but fair. He lost to Guardians. That is the worst deck of the era. A pile deck is better than Guardians because you need specific equip cards to summon the monsters in that archetype. Also, I'm talking about that period. I'm not counting Elma's dagger being banned in modern use. Guardians was a legitimately terrible deck. Heck, Atem was winning until... okay, I don't remember what happened, and I haven't gotten up to that arc on my rewatch binge (currently up to only Battle City with Joey vs. Mako), but the Pharaoh decided to just play the Seal of Orichalcos.
@@Entinu94 you can watch TGS anime disection of the duel but in short, Refael plays a long game, a dumb long game. but a long game, giving Yami the seal and then wearing him out through getting the perfect draws through guardian treasure to prevent yami from doing anything, UNLESS he plays the seal the orichalcos
@@DarkSymphony777 even though, as the abridged series said, there were no real stakes at the duel, since Raphael had already released professor Hawkings.
Filler is great because it allows Joey to not suck, because really, his canon duels suck and his deck is awful, the only good duel he plays is the duelist kingdom final
Yeah he manipulated and constantly was making the pharo doubt himself the entire duel his method of dueling sucks and when Dartz does the same thing to him he loses his soul immediately
SHOULD I DO THIS FOR GX TOO?
GREAT SANS LOGIC NERF ATEM

Well to be fair, if Joey pulled out his Big Chin Mode more, he’d automatically win everything, so the writers had to nerf him somehow.

@@Izelor yep
Hence why i said dumb long game
i wish we got yugioh r adapted as an anime filler arc
Most Filler anime not good for origin story. It can destroy the development character who made by the mangaka.
How do you calculate "Duel Score"? Where's the info from? I get percentages but unsure of the other stuff. Curious because I wanna try it myself
It's a metric used by TGS Anime when he did something similar. It's 3 points per win, 1 for every draw, and -1 for every loss
EXCELLENT WORK.
So manga Tea has 187 wins. Isn't her rating 100.
Filler is great because it allows Joey to not suck, because really, his canon duels suck and his deck is awful, the only good duel he plays is the duelist kingdom final
So... why are we getting double points for winning a tag duel/battle royal? seems like your just giving extra points to do it
Seems kinda rigged
What the hell is NCHammer 23 doing covering yugioh 🤔🤔🤔
That's actually such a huge compliment to me 😁
Better than him covering Naruto
Rafaels win againts atem wasn't a fair win
In what way it wasn’t atem choose to activate the seal

No u
the math doesn't math when did yugi lose 4 times lol
Against Pegasus in episode 2, against Kaiba in DK (Yes it counts), against Rafael, and against Yugi
