  • "Big Blue" our trusty 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 Sport was starting to show the ravages of 20 Ontario winters, the salt had taken its toll on our poor truck and it was time to repair it the right way.
So follow along as we swap the box out for a good used one, Hack off the rusty cab corners and rockers, and weld in nice new sheet metal before sending it off to get some filler and paint.
With any luck we'll get another 20 years out of Big Blue now.

Nice work on the rockers. I will be doing the same soon. I'm not a welder, but what settings do you use. Gas, flux core, low setting? I've tried welding a piece and realized the welder has to be on a low setting so it doesnt burn through the metal.

@ricardomartinez4898 I have an old Lincoln Mig Pak 15, I run 0.23" wire and I use a "Mig mix" (75% Argon, 25% CO2) shielding gas, doing sheetmetal I've come to find that my machine likes the wire speed to be 5-6, and my amperage to be in either C or D depending on what I'm doing.
The other thing to remember is that quick small tack welds are what you want with sheetmetal with adequate cooling time to minimize warpage

Why didn't you drill out spot welds on rockers

I did, I've always found it easier to remove as much as possible, then go in, drill my spot welds and peel off the remainder of the previous sheetmetal

Did you remove it entirely or is it still bolted on the truck?

Where did you get your rockers and tools?

The rockers were purchased through LKQ, all of my tools have been acquired over the years from various sources, mostly as I've needed them, my welder was bought used, my grinder came from Canadian tire during a sale, the hammers and dollies I bought through a MAC tools dealer, the Cleeco's I bought from Summit Racing, the pliers a friend gave me, the drill I bought from Home Depot when it was on sale years ago, etc.

If you own a body shop, is your buddy just painting it cuz you don't have time?

I don't own a bodyshop, I just do my own vehicle's, my friend owns a bodyshop, he has a booth and can turn out much cleaner work then I can do in my home shop.
