    This method's biggest enemy is algae, which quickly explodes because it uses a very long light and water that is not changed frequently. I haven't read the book completely, but I understand it. Good luck.

    • @IMaqua
      @IMaqua  Рік тому +5

      I never had issues with algae since this aquarium is established thanks and I will assume that is because of the huge number of plants I added from the start. Also I am doing weekly water change.

    • @midnull6009
      @midnull6009 Рік тому +4

      No it's not. Because you are not supposed to leave the light on for long....
      Even in the most pristine and well maintained aquariums if you leave the light on for long periods of time you'll get algae blooms.
      Never had an issue w/algae. I don't have a filter. Only keep my lights on for like 6hrs max. For the first few months I did frequent water changes but have since tapered off. Now I do like uh once in 3+ months, if that.
      My fish apparently love it cuz they're so freakin' vibrant.

    • @valleymykel-mq7gw
      @valleymykel-mq7gw Рік тому +4

      @@midnull6009I disagree.
      While light is part of it, you still require nutrients, nitrogen, and carbon for photosynthesis.
      Light restriction is not a one size fits all fix for algae control. The other elements can be adjusted to control algae. Ime most algae issues is because of excess nutrients and nitrogen with not enough efficient plant life to balance it.

    • @janskovgaard8906
      @janskovgaard8906 9 місяців тому +3

      If you do it right : no algae problems !

    • @arthurgiannakis2156
      @arthurgiannakis2156 7 місяців тому +1

      You're not getting 100% of the light through the tank because there are a lot of floating plants that filter the light. They get the best light and so then feed from the most growth elements and ammonia from the tank before anything else, mitigating any chance for algae to propagate. The internal plants then do the rest of the work to stop any further outbreak. It's a balancing act.

      @@IMaqua You are a very easy watch for the topic , appreciated the style of content from the time I found the channel and hopefully going forward you'll be able to take the extra time to make it right for you and whoever else is fortunate enough to see IM aqua ....I have thought many years I have to learn the video editor and the other technical side of uploading + techniques that I notice a very good example of this is

The whole process is just something that I have been enjoying but I have " Zeeeeer0 " intelligence trying to make any sense of what is involved with a video going from nothing to uploading etc. So you might understand better than I could explain but if you have never had the opportunity to ? Really I am understanding a lot more from being able to communicate about it , I think it would be the # of scene changes and the distance from far away then close etc. He probably has been in front of a monitor since he was old enough to read , and I think that's the reason why I have been looking but never learning 🕯

    This video is absolutely great. Well done.
    Just a tip. The first time you ever fill the tank after laying down dirt and gravel, you know there will be trapped bubbles that you will need to remove and you know the action of removing the bubbles will cloud up the water and you will need do a 100% water change. It is then not necessary to fill the entire tank with water just to drain it out again. Just fill it a few inches above the line of the gravel, knock out all the bubbles and just remove that water and then do the final refill.

    Thanks a lot for this beautiful and useful video. I estabilshed a planted aquarium with no filter, no c02 and no ferts just 2 weeks ago. No water changes done yet, because the water is still claer and clean. I just added some water after evaporizing. The plants are growing vey fast and the benficial bacteria are doing great. I also have a lot of Daphnias and little white worms roaming around and keeping a gooe aequilibrium. I added only 4 snails so far and their are helping a lot to keep the surface clean. I'm planning to add a Betta Splendens fish at the end of this month, since the ecosystem seems doing well and the water parameters are stable. It's so funny observe what happens in this closed system even right now that there's no fish in it! :D Everyday I see something new, something wonderful and unexpected! :)

    • @IMaqua

      I do it mostly because of the hard water and calcium deposits on the glass. I have hard water and if I let it build up on the glass for a few weeks it is impossible to clean it up. Anyway I change a very small volume of water weekly and it takes 10-15 minutes only. Even the book suggests that you can skip on water changes and do it every couple of months if you don't overstock the aquarium and have enough plants.

    Actually, i run a no-filter aquarium.
    The main issue i have is when i overfeed.
    Then it can get extremly dangerous.

    • @IMaqua

      I rarely overfeed this aquarium because the only fish inside is a Betta; yes I can see how overfeeding could be an issue.

      In her book Diana Walstad actually recommends overfeeding because extra food will provide the nutrients for the plants. Of course you need to be careful how much to overfeed.

      @@IMaqua I don't reccomend overfeeding. Plants will take care themselves.
      At most, they will slow their growth.

    I dont understand whats the fuss about these Walstad tanks. The only advantage I see over aqua soil is cost cutting for people with many tanks, otherwise it looks like too much hassle. Lots of work preparing it, a visually off putting really thick bottom layer and lots of stuff that can go wrong. But hey solid effort nicely done video!

    • @IMaqua
      @IMaqua  Рік тому +2

      Thanks for honest opinion. I would say the main difference is trying to grow an ecosystem whereas most of "normal" aquariums are over-cleaned. Here you don't do gravel vacuum and the mulm is actually beneficial (I mean you can do all this in an aquarium with soil). Bag of aquarium soil is expensive and in comparison bag of potting soil is 10 times cheaper. You can run Walstad aquariums much longer. But Walstad aquariums can be very messy especially during first month (as seen on my example) and rescaping and replanting is not really recommended because you will disturb the soil and create a mess. My own honest opinion is that it is more of thing you setup and you let the nature run its course without too much interference.

    Hi. I have a question. You only have one fish, right? How many shrimps and snails do you have in that tank?

    • @IMaqua
      @IMaqua  Рік тому +2

      Well that's impossible to answer. I originally added 25 shrimps that continuously multiply. Let's say I have a lot of them...
