Having owned one that was a mix, (Dad was pure terror uh Yorky, Mom was Pomeranian and American Eskimo), our city has a Rat problem, only once did a rat come into the yard, needless to say I was impressed on how quick my Yorky dispatched it. Unfortunately we also had a rabbit come in the yard. Her Dad latched onto a raccoon, it screamed and tried to run up a tree, Dad was trying to do the head shake but coon was 3 times the weight, finally made it up a tree. Crazy dogs!

It cracks me up every time I see a dog Vanessa is grooming do the, "no thank you," paw, because my cat is so crazy about being brushed will use his paw to hook my arm and drag my hand to the spot he wants if I don't clue in. I do this thing where each time I hold the brush up in front of him and say, "which side?" and he will tilt his head and pull up one cheek--I'm supposed to turn the brush to face that side. He then rubs up against the brush and I am supposed to continue the swipe down the length of his body.
If he wants it down his back, he bows his head. If he wants his chest and neck, he tosses his head like he he is saying, "'sup, girl?" He is VERY particular on that chin one, though; if I don't catch the nod, he will hook my arm and drag the brush toward him. If I still don't do it or set the brush down, he will use his paws to try to brush himself. Oh, and he loves having just the top of his head brushed over and over, he will flatten his ears back and tip his head up with his eyes closed like this is the height of all pleasure....the result being that he looks like a sea lion, I swear.
Afterward, you HAVE to tell him how handsome he is at least four or five times or he will not leave you alone. We do this every day and because he is shedding on beast mode right now, he is itchy--I am noticing that our little Sir Schrödinger Beauty Session is getting earlier and earlier each day. (My best friend taught him this trick, but she lives in France and isn't here to brush him, so I think that was kinda dirty pool. Like buying someone else's kid a drum set.)

We sometimes call our Scottish Terriers the Terri-orists because they are always plotting some sort of attack, mischief, or how-to-get something. And gosh, once they’ve decided on something, there’s no stopping them! The official nickname for the breed is “The Diehard” and they pretty much live up to that. My parents got a Yorkie when I was in my teens. He was fiercely defensive of our family and would eviscerate empty UPS boxes to protect us from the air within them. He was also very easy to train. My favorite thing I trained him to do was square the property line when I let him out off lead. I did this at two separate houses, and I did it because I didn't like having to go out with him in foul weather when he had to do his business.
Eventually he passed away. When my mother was moving out of the last house, she decided to sprinkle his ashes along the property line "because he liked to walk it so much," not realizing he did that because he'd been TRAINED to do it!

Oh, I never thought I would see this breed on your channel. They are only really known in netherlands and germany and even here they are rare.
I've owned a Wolfsspitz (the german bred type of the Keeshond who have easier to groom fur and don't look so "stubby") for 14 years and he has been the best companion I could have wished for. He was hard to train because no treat or toy could ever bribe him, but he was the most loyal dog you could imagine and just loved to do the things to make me happy. Even when he went deaf on his older age I could always walk with him through the forest without a leash because he was always looking out for me.

I've met a lot of Yorkies who were totally nuts (one I know tried to take on a German shepherd, and it would have lost its life if not for intervention and surgery) and Yorkies who were still feisty, but were very well-mannered. A well-socialized and well-mannered Yorkie can definitely be achieved, but I'll tell you, it's usually more of a challenge to train them than a breed that is known to be easy-going. 🙂 I wouldn't recommend them for a first-time dog owner.
The reason why I wouldn't is because I think people get focused on how wonderful it is that they are hypoallergenic, how little they shed, how cute they are, and how small they are, and they don't fully comprehend just how stubborn and tenacious and energetic Yorkies tend to be. Determination can be a wonderful asset!! - it was bred into them so that they would refuse to give up on chasing after rats. But it can also be bothersome (and even dangerous to the dog's life) in certain circumstances.
The way I see it, any trait (found or developed in any living thing, not just dogs) isn't innately "good" or "bad". But any strength can become a weakness (and vice versa) depending on the circumstances and the situation.
So when it comes to Yorkies, if you don't set boundaries and provide them with direction by showing them what is acceptable, then the behavior of that little dog that "looks like you could blow on it, and it would float away on the wind" 🤣can get out of hand. But, as long as you train them and work with them, they are such wonderful companions!!! 🥰 They are so funny, and so full of life! 😍They have a reputation for being a little bit more difficult to potty train than some other breeds, but it's not bad. You just have to stick with it, and you'll be fine. 🙂And as far as any other training goes, they are incredibly smart, and they tend to catch on very quickly. 👍

    • @jamegumb7298
      @jamegumb7298 Рік тому +21

      @@maudline Not odd.
Before the United Netherlands there were duchies, princedoms and independent provinces and cities. Each had its own dialect or accent, starting with a hard G up north and ending with an almost H sounding G in the far south, almost German like Dutch east, English sounding Dutch west. To this day you can tell with pretty good accucracy how far north or south someone is from by trheir G and how far eastthey are from by their O (Almeleueueueueu).
Holland is mid-north and completely seafaring west. The relevance? Well both Holland provinces were in an alliance of sorts so were called Holland, and they both held a lot of power during and after unification, and they were mostly engaged in the very lucrative seatrade. So they were identified as and said they were from Holland, the provinces, and their specific dialect was chosen as the default nationwide dialect of Dutch, for government and education, so they also taked in Holland dialect and as such anyone that came and heard them being talked about by anyone: Holland.
It stuck and became the name for the Low Countries in quite a few other countries even though the name Holland refers to 2 out of 12 provinces only.

A cousin and her husband used to have a keeshond. She was pretty, and very friendly, and was an explosion of very soft fur. That was several decades ago now, so she is long gone. Anyone interested in getting one these dogs, please know that being a wanderer is a characteristic of this breed, so you need a fenced yard, and when walking them, they must always be on a leash.
My stepmom has a tiny Yorkie. It's full grown, so it must be a miniature or toy version. She is a nice dog, but at family gatherings she does get a bit nervous with all of the people around. So do I.😄 She likes to look out the back living room door onto the upstairs deck because my stepmom has some bird feeders out there. Her Yorkie gets pretty excited when the birds and squirrels come by for food. I don't think that she really notices the hummingbirds visiting their feeders though. They are pretty small. They make a little pipping noise when they talk. A few times I've stood by their feeder pipping back to them, and they would come over to check me out and to try to figure out why I was pipping to them.🐦😄 At one place I lived many years ago I saw something that I thought at first was a hummingbird. A closer look revealed that it was a moth. When I looked it up I found that it's called a hummingbird moth. I've seen them a few more times since then. As moths go they are very big. They are actually about the size of some hummingbirds. They also fly like hummingbirds, so their wings make that same humming sound.

Not only have mine always been allowed off lead at suitable locations, but I’ve attended meet ups where 30 or so were all playing together off lead with no issues. The wandering is specific to that Kees or a training issue. I don't think I've heard of one that's a runner before. Mine off leash hikes with me all the time and chills off leash in patches of grass without fences no issue. They have low prey drives so they're actually very reliable off leash dogs. There was maintenance going on at my place and someone left the fence door open while I was at work. Came home to my dog waiting for me at the door like always and didn't realize the door was open till hours later.
