My silver dollar fish, Buckminster, is at least 25 years old and showed up on his side at the top of the tank. I found these instructions after a search. I liked them because they are simple and straightforward. My son and I treated Bucky yesterday and put him back in the tank. This morning he's swimming around and full of energy. He chomped right into the boiled peas this morning, and I saw him swim backwards for the first time ever as he happily performed for me at the front of the tank. The recommended cure saved my fish. Thank you!
Thanks your a star with this post. I’ve got a 15 year old Silver Dollar, which was lying on its side at the bottom of the tank away from my other fish. Wife said flush down the toilet, but I thought where’s there’s hope, there’s still a chance. Got the Epsom Salts, Stress-Coat Water Treatment, and applied using your precise instructions. Day one, little improvement, so repeated again the next day, returning fish to tank. Small improvements, fish swimming, but still somewhat on its side, and obviously weak from not eating. BUT, I noticed day by day improvements over 7 days, and now my dollar is swimming again with the others and fighting for her food. So Happy 👍
Hi! I did what you suggested to my fish and should I give it a second-day/daily "treatment"? It's still laying on the rock and not moving as much. Thank you!
Swim bladder is very common and can be due to parasites as well. Two of my goldfish have it and I know one got it from the other. Aquarium salt is a good, safe bet, along with melafix or paraguard depending on the parasite. If it's an open wound, it's melafix, if not, try paraguard first
My one fish died unfortunately due to some sort of parasite. It lived in the same tank as the one I think has swim bladder disease.... how do I figure out how to go from here? Is there any in particular medications I can try?
How can i put salt with a freshwater goldfish? Mine spit out the pea, but ate food from my hand for 2 weeks. He was upright for 3 days, twice, but then starts to float again. He is 12 and I'm worried our time is running out. 😭
I will definitely try this tomorrow if I can. I really don't want to lose this one. Her best friend, in the other tank, is really worried and really misses her while I have her quarantined atm.
@@MrKaidalen looks around for her . When she passed away she stayed by her side trying to help her swim and was so unmotivated to swim and upset in a way when I had to take her friend out of the tank who passed
Just tried this and my fish died. He seemed fine in the first bucket. I waited 15 minutes and as soon as I moved him to the second bucket it seemed like he panicked - perhaps from all the movement - and spasmed and then floated to the top.😢
My tetra doesn’t seem to be bloated, but he keeps tilting over and just seems disoriented. He isn’t gasping at the surface of the water or laying down on the gravel, so I’m not quite sure what’s going on with him.
I just got a golf fish today and he seems to be tilting a little but not upside down or sideways just a little tilted when he swims could it be the same thing?
yo so my betta is kinda just sitting? idk if that's the right word for but he's kinda like, leaning on his tail as if using it to prevent him from tipping over at the bottom of the tank. is it just swim bladder?
I'm glad that people were able to effectively use this advice, however, I'm just concerned that the effort required, coupled with the amount of time to actually catch the problem fish might cause stress to it that could cause worse problems than the swim bladder disorder itself... 🤔 😢
My 11 year old common Pleco has stopped moving. He’s sitting at the bottom of the tank and can’t move at all. I only noticed this after a water change two days ago. I’ve put standard aquarium salt in with him into the tank. Is there anything else I can do?
Is he still around? I have had plecos "freeze up" after water changes before, lasting a day or two before they come out of it. Sudden PH, temp changes or water not properly dechlorinated can put them into shock.
mlbloverock no, unfortunately he died. I didn’t do anything different than I’ve done over the years I’ve been keeping fish. I’ll put it down to age. But it was still sad.
My fish may have swim bladder, but I’m not sure. I found him this morning looking like he was stuck in his house (although now not sure if he was stuck b/c he keeps hiding in different spots (he could’ve just been hiding I guess)). Now for the last 10 hours, he has been swimming upside down and running into things or laying at the bottom of the tank. Does this seem like what your fish had? Should I treat him with the epsom salt?

Hi! My dojo loach a while back had ich so I had to treat for that, and as you know they are scaleless fish. So I had to treat with salt and temp which stressed him out to the point where he got a bacterial infection in his second air sack I believe so I treated him with an antibiotic. And it seemed to help with his floaty butt. But now he is very lethargic and very gassy. I am lost at what to do and was wondering if you at all knew what to do??? Also he is not keen on eating at all that I’ve seen, I’ve tried feeding peas but he will not eat them. Please help.
Hi Ron, Thanks for the info! I wish I watched this last night. I just got 5 Beautiful show guppies in the mail, I put them in a pitcher, and dumped them into my aquarium. I aslo noticed that my pump is a little strong, and in certain areas, they have to swim hard. I'm getting a smaller pump anyway, but do you think I killed them, or they were more likely damaged in shipping? Each of them slowly died, as you described. I even tried moving them to a more established tank. They lasted a day, in a tiny tank, and seemed fine. Once I moved them to a big tank (similar water temp), they declined. And on top of it, 3 fish were delivered dead, just prior. I live in South Florida. Should I refrain from buying online, cause of the heat? Please help me! I am so distraught, and I have another shipment on the way! 😵

I wanted to know if I should use the epsom salt solution now? or continue to give them peas or switch back to their regular flake food? thanks.
Hey! I just tried this for my oto catfish today. His swimming was bad and I know the poor guy is sick. Although it helped with his balance he still seems kinda lethargic and sick. When I put him back he tried to stick to the side of the tank but ultimately fell down. He's in a little hiding spot right now. Should I give him a few days? I'm just worried about him.
Unfortunately he was too far gone. He ended up passing that night. With that said, I will do this in the future. I actually did this for my betta as well. He was swimming normally, but he was alittle constipated. He is doing alot better! I'm definitely going to get them on a better diet. Thank you for this video though.
Hey buddy , My silver arowana is suffering from the same problem , he wasn’t eating from the past few days and today his belly was bloated and would swim upside down . I got the Epsom salt and followed the exact procedure you told me and I have put him back to his tank , but doesn’t look like anything has improved . What can I do next , please reply as soon as possible, I’m really stressing out and can’t imagine of loosing him , also could we connect somewhere else so that I can send you pictures of him , thanks a ton , waiting for your response
Would this also treat swim bladder disease due to a bacterial infection? I took a friend’s betta fish that has been living in a tiny mason jar with a single plastic plant for over a year now and moved him into a 5 gallon filtered/heated tank. The fish never swam or moved in the jar (didn’t have room to) and barely ate plus with water changes maybe every month or so, when I first got him into the tank it took awhile for him to start swimming, he finally did and it was a bit wobbly but I didn’t think too much of it considering he’s been in a jar not even big enough to fit a moss ball in for a year, but it’s been getting worse and it seems a lot like swim bladder disease, I’m not quite sure the cause since I’ve had this fish for less than 48 hours now and nothing in the tank seems to be off, so I’d assume it’s from his past care. All of the common causes for swim bladder disease honestly seems likely, while in his past home he’s been over fed (bloating), no water changes (bacterial infection), handled by hand (physical injury). Considering the severity of his condition I’ve suspecting it to be bacterial infection, which is most commonly fatal. I could tell he was on his last few breaths while I was at my friends and I hope to change that even though I’m only 15 and have never owned a betta before, if anyone has suggestions or might know what’s wrong with my betta please tell! He’s been floating around his tank, either above the water or below, barely flapping his fins, he never did before until the first day he got into his new big tank but he stopped the day after, and he’s back to floating around and then suddenly starts swimming rapidly in all directions.
@@FridayFishFacts We were able to get some from our local aquatics store, we went at it for awhile and saw no improvement, noticed the poor guy had a lot of fin rot and some nasty fungal viruses on top of it all. He was not a happy fish at all, we tried many things, in the end after talking to some other fish rehabilitation groups, I’ve decided that the best option was to euthanize him. I still remember how happy he was when we first got him into his new tank, he was playing in the plants and devoured the daphnia we gave him after being stuck on plant based fish food :( Very sad day. Crazy how people see these living creatures with personality and treat them as if they were nothing more than decorations, makes me so upset. I tried best I could, but I think I took him a tad bit too late, I had to let the tank cycle for 5 weeks before I could grab him. Thank you for the advice though! Didn’t respond right away, but I will definitely keep this in mind for the future, I’m planning on trying again with a betta fish. Hopefully one that can stay happy and healthy forever.

Hello, I have just followed your instructions in the video to give an epsom salt bath to my betta fish who seems to be suffering with constipation. I want to know do I have to do it after 24 hrs again if the symptoms persist? For how many days can I do this procedure?
Thanks I tried feeding pea to the fish as well as the epsom salt bath and it has worked. He seems to be doing well, swimming well balanced and even pooped. Do I have to feed peas for another few days or that's it?
Hi, Willy my Betta got swim bladder desease after I had to travel and left it with a friend who probably overfeed it on my away time. It has been a week already since I came back, and I tried the fasting for 3 days (did not work), Epsom Salt baths for the last 3 days (still nothing), and tried to feed him peas for the last two days with no success (he would not eat them). 1. How long do you think Willy can go without food (should I give him some pellets if he keeps refusing eating the peas). 2. For how many days should I keep trying the Epsom Salt baths, and how many baths should I give him daily? (currently 1 bath a day) Thanks.
Technically a betta can survive 2 weeks without food but I wouldn’t go past a week. The salt baths are really a last resort. So if it didn’t work, I wouldn’t try again. You’re certain it’s his swim bladder?
Friday Fish Facts I’m pretty sure. He was fine when I left, and when I came back he was bloated and swimming a little weird and got worse over the days. Now he is on the surface all the time, has a hard time to get to the bottom, and swims somewhat leaning to his sides. I don’t have reasons to believe he’s got something else, and unfortutately there are no fish vets where I live. I could send you some videos if you want to take a look. Thank you so much for your help.
Good video ☺️ I've put this in my aquarium folder future reference. 😊 I like to make sure I feed Daphnia (mainly freeze dried) a few times a week as I was told this aids digestion too.
Works miracles, caught my African blue cichlid early on and treated immediately with this advice, for starters treatment worked immediately...we will see tm...
Hi Ron... good stuff. I have heard this remedy so much but it still confuses me. That is the known remedy for bloat. Wish is a gastrointestinal issue. The swim bladder is a sack that is attached to the fish just underneath the backbone. It has nothing to do with the digestion. You know I have been trying to get Humphrey better. I think his swim bladder has a leak or won't hold air anymore as he only sinks. I did try this bloat remedy but it was unsuccessful. I wasn't surprised as it's not a bloat problem. The thing is. I have searched and searched for swim bladder remedies and this is all I ever find. Any thoughts? It's weird huh?
DebTim A CANADIAN Girl I have found it very difficult to get info on treatments. I have pieced together information from UA-cam, but mostly Facebook forums. No one person seems to have a full answer. 1 of the 2 tiger barbs I treated survived. I also treated my neighbours betta a week ago, but he isn’t out of the woods yet. Thanks for your insight Deb. I value your opinion very highly.
Thanks. I am very glad you were successful. Humphrey my FH is very thin, but can not swim. He started eating and seems happy but he can't swim. He does try but as soon as he stops moving he sinks. It's only swim bladder and nothing pushing on it. It's very interesting that we can't find much on this.
Hey Deb it sounds like poor Humphrey has a deflated swim bladder. Seen this a few times and fish live quite a while with it they just have to work at swimming.

Ok I need some help I don’t know if it’s swim bladder but it does look like it...so I put water conditioner in and I did sum research before and it said it wasn’t bad to put conditioner in while the fish is also in the water. But now I’m considering if it’s bad...so I put the water conditioner and out of nowhere the betta fish started swimming hella fast around the tank and now a few seconds later he’s just like you said swimming upside down and he’s just calm rn but I’m still gonna get the salt just don’t know if this is swim bladder..also he’s just floating left side up and having a hard time...I’ve had him for like 4 days already
Yes, you put the conditioner in with the fish. Make sure your tank is cycled and has a good filter. Get your water tested. If everything looks good and you still think it’s swim bladder, try this: ua-cam.com/video/PSSMosfDti8/v-deo.html
My fish are in a hyper speed and one fish is down on the Bottom but the other fish is pushing the fish upwards but it gets down on the fish tank. We just got them and i was wonder why are they acting like that, their koi fish i think
Mines alive but stuck at the bottom. It can’t move. It’s stomachs really big and it’s upside down just getting knocked about. They said to put a pea in but it can’t move to eat it. And some water treatment
So I recently got a betta fish, and he looked pretty well he was stressed though from the pet store and nipped at his tail, his tail is healing from what it looks like but hes not eating and sometimes hell kinda float to the side for a minute and then hell adjust himself. he also blows bubbles at the top of his tank but it's not a bubble nest. I've seen him and the top and bottom of the tank so I dont know what the issue is if there is any. if anyone could help that would be great :)
@@FridayFishFacts one thing, you only did this once and the swim bladder was fixed? Or did you repeat once a day for 4 days? Or something to that effect?

Unfortunately he was too far gone. He ended up passing that night. With that said, I will do this in the future. I actually did this for my betta as well. He was swimming normally, but he was alittle constipated. He is doing alot better! I'm definitely going to get them on a better diet. Thank you for this video though.
Hey buddy ,
My silver arowana is suffering from the same problem , he wasn’t eating from the past few days and today his belly was bloated and would swim upside down .
Sorry to hear that. I’m not sure about Arrowanas. I don’t have any experience with them
Does this work with freshwater aquariums? I have emerald tiger barbs in a freshwater tank but I think 3 of mine have swim bladder
Yes, I’ve only done it with freshwater fish
Thank you, it works so well the information is great.
That’s great!
Does this work on algae eaters as well?
So your tank is cycled right? Could be a lot of thinks. Can you get your hands on general cure or erythromycin?
@@ayanotheoptimisticidiot5608 I’m very sorry to hear that. You definitely did all you could for the little guy. Good luck in the future, I know you’ll be successful
wouldn't it be better to just use the tank water to bathe them in?
You could, I went with fresh water
I’m going to try this. I’ve be helpless for my betta fish I’m not sure what he has. He does look like he been swimming on his side but he not floating on top. He been laying down on the side and floating on the bottom. He hasn’t have no appetite I’m so worried for him
What is alternative to epson salt
My neon tetras seem to get this.. all of them?
Can I do this to my tetra? Please help I don’t want it to die
Hi does this work on sarasa comet goldfish? I have one and he's floating on his side
Yes it should
Hello Friday Fish Facts! That's great to know, i am glad to see someone go above and beyond to cure a pet :)
Marcin Siwek Thanks Marcin. Hopefully you’ll never need it but if u do, you’ll be prepared
Hello, I have just followed your instructions in the video to give an epsom salt bath to my betta fish who seems to be suffering with constipation. I want to know do I have to do it after 24 hrs again if the symptoms persist? For how many days can I do this procedure?
Try this first ua-cam.com/video/PSSMosfDti8/v-deo.html
Thanks I tried feeding pea to the fish as well as the epsom salt bath and it has worked. He seems to be doing well, swimming well balanced and even pooped. Do I have to feed peas for another few days or that's it?
priyanka jyoti no he should be fine now. Just reduce the amount you had been feeding him and hopefully he won’t bloat again
Thanks a lot for the guidance.
priyanka jyoti my pleasure
Hi, Willy my Betta got swim bladder desease after I had to travel and left it with a friend who probably overfeed it on my away time. It has been a week already since I came back, and I tried the fasting for 3 days (did not work), Epsom Salt baths for the last 3 days (still nothing), and tried to feed him peas for the last two days with no success (he would not eat them).
1. How long do you think Willy can go without food (should I give him some pellets if he keeps refusing eating the peas).
2. For how many days should I keep trying the Epsom Salt baths, and how many baths should I give him daily? (currently 1 bath a day)
Thanks.
Ya sure. You can dm me on instagram @fridayfishfacts
Good video ☺️ I've put this in my aquarium folder future reference. 😊 I like to make sure I feed Daphnia (mainly freeze dried) a few times a week as I was told this aids digestion too.
Gaina wow! I really appreciate it! Hopefully you’ll never need it
What is daphnia?
Works miracles, caught my African blue cichlid early on and treated immediately with this advice, for starters treatment worked immediately...we will see tm...
Hey Ron hope your keeping cool. Good luck with the swim bladder issues they are a pain
Fishman thanks very much! We were one for two with these tiger barbs
That's good results when it comes to these things
THANKS SO MUCH!! MY FISH IS CURED NOW!! THANK YOU
Goldfish 439_YT awesome! I’m so happy 😁
how often do this need doing?? my fish is suffering alot :(
Hopefully just once
This might be a silly question but will this work for beta fish as well
It will. But try fasting your betta for 3 days first. Day 4, offer your betta pea. I’ve got a video if you’re interested
Trying this now for my barramundi 🤞
Sir I Have Red Cap But Mh Red Cap Is eating and He sank but he floats but es not upside down a0and hecan swim is that maybe a swim bladder disease?
Red cap goldfish? Tough to say without seeing him
Thanks for the video I have had several fish with swim bladder issues and have one right now
The fishy Rules!! Hopefully this works for u 👍
Does it mean that my serpae Tetra has swim bladder because he is facing his nose to the ground.
Sounds like it
Hi Ron...
DebTim A CANADIAN Girl I’m just guessing, but I’d say as long as he isn’t getting bullied, he should be fine
Hey Deb it sounds like poor Humphrey has a deflated swim bladder. Seen this a few times and fish live quite a while with it they just have to work at swimming.
HI Eric... I will remember that. I believe that is exactly what happened
Please reply quickly, can I use just the epsum salt and water I don’t have a dechlorinator
hiitslucie you’ll have to let the water sit for 24 hours if you don’t use dechlorinator
do the peas have to be frozen or can I use rinsed peas from a can
They don’t have to be frozen
what if you only have one fish with this diseaese, do you have to decrease the number of salt of just do the same thing
No, same amount
This has happened to my gold fish. It doesn't look like it is alive but you can slightly tell that it is alive. Please answer. I'm really scared.
Edit: Do you have to put the prime in before you put the fish in?
You add prime every time you do a water change. Swim bladder isn’t life threatening
Did they make it?
As far as I remember, one died
@@FridayFishFacts At least one survived. I did a epsom salt bath on my platy today and it doesn't look like anything has changed. Also did Paraguard bath. Nothing. Can you do the epsom salt bath daily?
@@squirrelattackspidy I would try this first before doing a second bath

If everything looks good and you still think it’s swim bladder, try this:
ua-cam.com/video/PSSMosfDti8/v-deo.html
My fish are in a hyper speed and one fish is down on the Bottom but the other fish is pushing the fish upwards but it gets down on the fish tank. We just got them and i was wonder why are they acting like that, their koi fish i think
So very cool I'm going to take some time and go through your content can't wait to see you do a livestream thanks for all your community support
My sky's 5-D thanks very much! Just started trying out live streaming. I’ve enjoyed it so far, thanks for watching
Just tried putting my oranda into a hospital tank with Paraguard and aquarium salt. Would you still recommend the salt baths with epsom?
I’d hold off for now. Epsom salt is a last resort
can i use the espom salt method on a betta fish and how do i do the salt method with the betta fish?
You can use the same method, but try this first:
ua-cam.com/video/PSSMosfDti8/v-deo.html
Thanks for the tips!they'll come in handy one day!
FISHMAS (fish keeping) hopefully you never need them 👍
Friday Fish Facts yes!
Will this work for dwarf gouramis ?
I would try fasting your gouramis for a few days first
I have epson salt with clay and ginger is this still safe for fish
Epson salt and ginger yes. There is some thought that clay that can be moulded into a hard object may be harmful to aquariums
Mines alive but stuck at the bottom. It can’t move. It’s stomachs really big and it’s upside down just getting knocked about. They said to put a pea in but it can’t move to eat it. And some water treatment
It might be too far gone at this point. I’d get your water tested
Very useful facts my goldfish chronically use to get swim bladder disease
Pets'n Friends hopefully they ended ok 👌
Friday Fish Facts not really that's why I have regular freshwater fish
Is this for freshwater or salt water fish?
Freshwater. I’m not sure about salt, I don’t really know much about saltwater aquariums
My guy is pretty far gone... How soon should I see results? Or how often should I redo this if its not working?
Give this a try first
ua-cam.com/video/PSSMosfDti8/v-deo.html
@@FridayFishFacts thank you. I tried this first then tried the Epsom salt bath. He may have something else going on or I got to him too late
Nice.Pops saves the day again 👍💪
Rob 93 one died 😬 1 for 2, did my best Rob 👍
So I recently got a betta fish, and he looked pretty well he was stressed though from the pet store and nipped at his tail, his tail is healing from what it looks like but hes not eating and sometimes hell kinda float to the side for a minute and then hell adjust himself. he also blows bubbles at the top of his tank but it's not a bubble nest. I've seen him and the top and bottom of the tank so I dont know what the issue is if there is any. if anyone could help that would be great :)
Did the end up just fine? Did it work? *
It did
@@FridayFishFacts one thing, you only did this once and the swim bladder was fixed? Or did you repeat once a day for 4 days? Or something to that effect?
Jessica S. only once. But this would be my second recommendation. I’ve got another video. Fast for three days, then try feeding a pea. It’s less traumatic for the fish
@@FridayFishFacts thank you!
I just had to re-sub that’s weird I only watched videos today and I was definitely subbed them. Hmmm UA-cam . Good video thanks Ron
Very informative. Never knew this. 👍👍
MooMoo Outdoors glad u learned something 👍
Good stuff Ron! We did the mushed pea thing for a couple Molly's last year and worked like a charm.
Paul Charby glad to hear that Paul! I found it difficult to get them to stay to interested in the peas
Do the fish have to be sick in order to treat them or
Can it be used as an antibiotic
And then release them back into the main tank again
Thanks for any answers 😎
How many times can you do this in a week?
I would just do it once
Great video brotha, I had swim bladder issues twice and both times they didn’t make it ..
Unconventional Aquatics sorry to hear that. Were they tiger barbs or something else?
Friday Fish Facts no both were African Cichlids, did your tiger barbs make it alright?
Unconventional Aquatics 1 for 2. I also treated a neighbours betta a week ago. He’s still alive but not out of the woods yet
Hot or cold water?
Same temp as the tank
This might be a silly question but will this work for beta fish as well?
that's actually a REALLY silly question 🤦♂️
@@redemptionoverretribution1491 sorry I’m not a fish expert my guy
Epsom salt really helps for so many things! I wish you luck and hope the tiger barbs can get well fast!
MyHecticLifePets thanks. They were 1 for 2
Where did you get the epson salt
I can’t find it
Should be able to find it at a drug store
I don’t have espson salt and my fish is swimming wierd please someone help me what can I do
What happed
This was really helpful!
Good I’m glad!!!
Is that Epsom salt in both buckets?
Just the one. The other is a rinse
Can u use this on a betta ?
Cc Ramirez yes you can but I’d try fasting him first. ua-cam.com/video/PSSMosfDti8/v-deo.html
Nice information on swim bladder, hope I never need it but at least I now know what to do...
Mr D it was kind of difficult to find information on. I tried my best to explain it.
