Might be my favorite Batman artist ever. Jones is just perfect for Batman. I don’t know where the conceit that Batman dresses like a bat to instill fear in criminals came from, but I think Jones is one of the few artists who ever sold the idea that Batman is a scary looking dude.
Great overview of this book, guys. I appreciate the props as the inker, as you all know we don't get as much attention sometimes, so it is nice to be noted! BTW, it was me who was putting in the color notes in the margins. Doug, Kelley, and I worked on many Batman projects for 8 years. Three of those years being on the monthly Batman comic. Love your channel been a long-time subscriber and viewer. Great to binge-watch/listen to while working on some art.
John, thanks for answering some questions. As for your inking, I think it's an integral part this art and what I enjoy about this art. I find it very inspiring! Thank you for making something special! - JR
@@CartoonistKayfabe Thanks! I really do appreciate it! Love the channel you guys have built too! It’s a great asset to the comics community!! Wanted to say HI to you all in Charlotte, but after I arrived on Thursday I got hit that night with Covid and just laid in bed wishing I wasn’t sick. See you guys next time!! 🤘
I've always loved your work, esp. with Zeck - you two do a Cap second only to Kirby w Giacoia or Sinnott. I was unfamiliar with the Batman work, which looks amazing, going to have to hunt down some of those issues! Thank you for all the great inking over the years.
One thing about Jones is that his work needs a truly amazing inker, and that really makes these pages land. IMO this inkwork is up there w/ Wrightson, Booth, Finlay, easily. Stunning and took these runs to a whole other level of serious fine art. Legendary mark-making and knitting of light/dark, unfathomable to me! 😯
Kelley Jones is one of the few creators whose work I buy every time something by him is released. I first discovered him on The Sandman and was instantly a fan. He's one of those guys whose work truly looks like nobody else's - you know it's him the second you see it, like with Kirby, Allred or Mignola.
I've been waiting for you to check on Kelley Jones for ages. He was my Batman artist growing up and remains a fav today. I knew you'd dig him. These artist edition pages are beyond impressive!
Dig Kelley Jones. He's part of a school with few students, the cartoony with highly dramatic lighting. Hilary Barta is on that spectrum too, further to the cartoony side.
Beatty inking is great, makes Jones a bit closer to Michael Golden for sure. Probably because they worked together on The 'Nam to wonderful results. And he came right after a great job by Armando Gil and a rare inking gig by Rebel creator Pepe Moreno.
John Beatty inked a few issues of The Nam for Golden, could be where some of that flavor comes from! He has a YT Channel where you can see him slinging ink: John Beatty Art!
This kelley jones artist edition is amazing! I’ve seen this video a few times now and eddie p kills me everytime he mentions the guillotine carnival act lol good stuff guys, keep up the good work👍🏼
Great to see the Jones and Beatty team up get the love ; I don’t think they are slept on per se but seeing the originals really drives home the effort they put into their world
Kelley Jones was literally the reason i started just picking up random Batman comics from the used bin! I would pick up the issues absolutely loving the art style. The cover of Batman Knightfall 3 with batman hunched over the lady and ZsasZ in the back is one of my favorite covers and also one of the first i read!
I’ve always loved Kelly Jones style. The bold borders and sharp shadows pop out so strongly. It’s a good match for Batman. I would like to see you guys cover the new Ahoy series G.I.L.T. It has some of the best art of Alain Mauricet’s career. Really great characters
some of my favorite Batman art of all time. Around the 9:46 mark - who is the white silhouette who appears to be hanging a puppet of Batman? is this just some random Arkham inmate? Is this related to another story?
Jones only did the covers for Knightfall. They actually asked Keith, but he had a little breakdown and Jones stepped in. Jones took over after Knightfall, in like '95. You guys should do a video on the Jones Deadman Gallery Edition.
ohh i waited for this one soo long !! i own this book thanks uncle Ed and uncle Jim we love you Needless to say Kelley jones is a master out of this world craftsman bring him to the show please
Jones is amazing - The Swamp Thing issue: The Mad Axeman's Jazz was great and the first thing i ever saw of his. You should check out UK 2000AD artists John Hicklenton or Simon Harrison from the 90s too. Fantastic, unique styles.
I never meant to have a longbox of batman and tec comics. But Jones is the first eye grab next to Keith and Mcfarlane. Like you see the Adams and Giordanos alot and it becomes "the norm". Your eye knows it AS Batman. So these just stand out and it stops your rummaging for that extra split second.
I read in Comic Book Creators interview that Doug Wiley of Jonny Quest told Kelley to draw a monthly comic book so that he would be recognized as being known for consistency/meeting deadlines! Incredible Hulk 367,Sam Kieth &Kelley worked together, Mr.Hyde on a train! Keep reading and making comix!❤️🎯👍
Man, I hated his work as a kid. Everything was lumpy and ugly. Going back now I can appreciate it as a horror style. I remember his covers better than 90 percent of the other comics coming out at the time so obviously he was doing it right
I prefer Jones in black and white. A lot of this stuff got washed out with the computer coloring that seemed always too saturated and dark back in the day.
Watching this analysis I can’t deny what an incredible artist he is. But for some reason, I couldn’t get into the exaggerated faces that he would do for regular people… always found them ugly / distracting
Never seen a Batman so ugly that he seems like a caricature of himself, grotesque, with a totally wrong anatomy, deformed and overall very badly drawn. The great thing is that authors of this genre are also praised as great artists... we are at the end..

Seeing Kelley Jones's black and white work has increased my admiration for his work exponentially. Thank you for sharing!
John Betty's contribution to this book is perfect. This looks so good in black and white.
Kelley Jones is in my top 5 Batman artists along with Jim Aparo, Norm Breyfogle, Marshall Rogers, and Neal Adams.
Kelley is also the sweetest, kindest cartoonist in the business. I'm a HUGE fan. :D :D
Kelley Jones is incredible. I grew up with his Batman covers. Such a natural fit for the characters.
One thing about Jones is that his work needs a truly amazing inker, and that really makes these pages land. IMO this inkwork is up there w/ Wrightson, Booth, Finlay, easily. Check out "The Hammer" for pure Kelley Jones. It's brilliant stuff.
His work on "Gotham after midnight" is my prime Kelley Jones. highly recommend for sure.
Still love the Kelly Jones Batman run. Dude had a great style for Gotham and it still stands out. You should check out his newer Batman minis too.

I was reading this one off the racks when they came out- just so good on a monthly book! Happy to say I own this Gallery edition as well!!!
❤ Love this! Love Kelley Jones! Love you guys! 👏👏👏
Great episode 👏 I love that Kelley Jones art. It's timeless, and still looks amazing in 2020s.
I love Kelley Jones' art. The first time I saw it was back in 1992 with his work on Aliens: Hive. So damn good!

Check out the Kelly Jones Deadman artist edition from the same publisher. They also have a crazy good Sam Keith Batman artist edition.
some of my favorite Batman art of all time. Around the 9:46 mark - who is the white silhouette who appears to be hanging a puppet of Batman? is this just some random Arkham inmate? Is this related to another story?
The Marionette man, a mysterious figure who was to be the focus of the fourth year that the Moench and Jones didn’t get to do.
@@sauron1692 intriguing! did this character ever appear in the comics at all?
This was my favorite Batman run. Got all of these.
Always loved his Batman covers in the 90s

Is it me, or does anyone else see a Swampthing face in the smoke billowing out of the train on that first shot of it?!
I see it too!

What was that second comic you mentioned alongside sun runners?
There's a bit of a Gulacy feel on some of the faces
It's so nice to see all the pages in black and white. I feel like the coloring really buried his beautiful line work a lot of times.
👋
Man, I hated his work as a kid. Everything was lumpy and ugly. Going back now I can appreciate it as a horror style. I remember his covers better than 90 percent of the other comics coming out at the time so obviously he was doing it right
The genius of Jones is his work assumes his audience is sharp
