    I remember one day I went to school feeling really sick with cramps, so I went wearing pajama pants. They were baggy, full-length, navy with some sort of white pattern (maybe snowflakes), and most likely paired with a hoodie and a frown. I was sent to the office and told that they were inappropriate because they "made the boys think of bedtime".
    Back in 2003, I didn't have the terminology yet to express why this made me so angry and upset. There wasn't a conversation yet about how it shouldn't be a girl's responsibility to hide any slight curve of her body, to hide as much skin as possible even on sweltering days, just so that boys aren't "distracted". This reinforces the idea that nudity and the female body are synonymous with sex, which is a huge problem in America, and why things like BREAST FEEDING are seen as "obscene" when it's literally the most natural thing in the world.

      Think of bedtime?What?And how do they know what boys think?And we are always told to focus on what we are wearing to "not distract boys".But they never tell boys to control themselves.And some boys are uncomfortable woth those rules because they make boys look like animals who can't control them...

She didn't speak very good English (Because she was from Cozumel) But I walked past my guidance counselors office one day and I had overheard my principal tell the exchange student that She was not allowed to wear those outfits anymore because IF SHE GOT SEXUALLY ASSAULTED IT WOULD NOT BE THE BOYS FAULT.
    She took it to the school board, we never had another foreign exchange student and he was fired the the year I graduated. He was a piece of actual garbage. He moved him and his wife to another state.

On top of that, the uniform made me look bigger than I really was

      We had uniforms and girls got dress coded all the time for skirt length. We had to get our skirts from the school’s uniform manufacture and they cut the senior skirts too short in the back. Like it got to the point that it was pissing off the boys that we were getting dress coded daily. Some of them ran an experiment where they wore shorts that were too short and not a single guy got dress coded for it. They eventually backed off when the parents got involved, but it was a wild few months at first. Absolutely unnecessary. I haven’t been in high school for awhile, but I’m still pissed.

      Honestly it always made me so angry because I had a bigger chest than majority of the girls in my school and I was constantly dress coded just for "showing off" my chest. Even in a Tshirt because it was fitted. But yea I almost never wore dresses because I've even been dress coded in my chorus dress because of my cleavage. I WAS ON MY WAY TO CHANGE ANYWAYS!!!

We didn't have a real dresscode, it's more like we made that up as the student body, like one time a girl showed up with shorts that showed her buttcheeks and of course she was the talk of the week, but she didn't get resscoded, but almost everyone agreed that this was taking it too far. So sometimes girls would do some risky outfits, but it was mostly just girls wearing whatever they wanted, sometimes to impress the boys but mostly just because we could. I'm feeling so sorry for all the girls getting dresscoded for things that are just normal clothes. I hope this will change for you someday soon and you can wear the cutest outfits you can imagine!

      @@courtney4124 It did mean that. Aforementioned skinny blonde girl did not get dress coded according to OP's story. It's not about whether skinny girls have personal body issues (most women do bc of how we're socialized). It's about the degree to which the bodies of young girls are systematically sexualized and policed. Most women that I know would be able to relate stories where girls with less obvious curves were allowed more freedom in how they dressed (and in many ways allowed to be children for just a bit longer).

    • @ilektrac9354
      @ilektrac9354 5 років тому +14

      Kiyo you are right, I only pointed out that she was skinny to prove that the reason I got dress coded was due to my curves. Women that are skinnier, with less curves usually do not get sexualized as quickly, they have more freedom in what they wear, especially in high schools. Just as you said, allowed to be children for longer. I was always sporty and worked out so my thighs and butt are bigger than most girls I went to high school with. If I were skinny myself, I would not have been dress coded.

    • @ilektrac9354
      @ilektrac9354 5 років тому +6

      Courtney honey please stop jumping to conclusions and feel free to read and interpret my comment above. I never said that she did not struggle with body issues, she might and she might not. I pointed out that she was skinny as that was the reason she did not get dress coded. I did have to point out that she is skinny and blonde, because in the Florida school systems that matters. They are in a way more free to wear what they would like, even if it is against dress code. However, curvier girls will get dress coded as their thighs are more noticeable. As far as her being blonde (a white girl), people are still racist, my old school included. The world is unfair, it’s as simple as that.

    My school was in Russia, the dress code basically was: "don't dress like a streetwalker, no jeans, no jym clothes outside of jym class". Girls were also asked to avoid excessive makeup. Nobody got sent home for violating the code (when it happened, which was often, especially the "no jeans" rule), nobody ever even thought of making a fuss over any shoulders or a bit of thigh showing. As long a girl could be sure she won't flash anyone when bending down (cleavage or panties), she was perfectly fine.

    In high school I was in a club that I had to "dress nicely" for once a month. One day when I had to dress up for this club I wore a skirt because my high school was always very humid so I would've been sweating in anything else. Those of you who have a bigger booty can agree that you can't comfortably wear a skirt and a backpack at the same time without it riding up. So this day I was walking to class (with my backpack on, of course) and a teacher stopped me & said "EXCUSE ME YOUR ENTIRE BUTT IS HANGING OUT!" I was wearing shorts underneath my skirt & what she was referring to was my thigh. I was a bigger girl (size 16) and I guess my thigh was as big as my butt?? Most embarrassing moment of my life... went in the bathroom and cried afterwards.

    My high school basically had no dress code, which I loved, but my middle school's was pretty much the same as this one. We also weren't allowed to wear hoods inside because they "promote gang activity." In the handbook, it says that it's because they "limit student vision and identification," but teachers and the principal stressed the idea that hoods are gang-associated on multiple occasions. When I was in eighth grade, a bunch of kids (both girls and boys, even though boys never got dress coded) decided that one day, they'd all break the dress code in protest. The principal caught wind of this plan and called JUST THE GIRLS to the auditorium for an assembly telling them that anyone breaking dress code on that day would be suspended. I was always someone who always preferred to dress more "conservatively" and whatnot, and people were always confused when I told them that I thought the dress code was BS. Like, it doesn't matter that I didn't want to wear things that would have broken the dress code, what matters is that the girls who _did_ want to wear perfectly appropriate things that would have broken didn't have the freedom to do that. Guys, of course, could wear whatever the hell they want with no consequences. A girl could get dress coded for wearing a shorter shirt that happened to accidentally roll up to expose her midriff, but guys could wear t-shirts with the sleeves cut off so far into the sides of the shirt that you could see their entire stomach. Girls would get called to the office for having a bra strap exposed, but guys could be wearing their jeans so low that their entire ass was hanging over their waistband and they wouldn't get so much as a passing glance from teachers.
